"Do you really believe that there is another Hawkmoth in Paris?" Gabriel and Nathalie looked through various posts, pictures, and videos of the akuma in question. It was the first akuma in decades, so naturally everyone was talking about it.
"Not likely, this holder seems different from Hawkmoth." Nathalie pulled out her tablet, "From eyewitness reports and various posts, the akuma in question, known as Alchemist, was non hostile and did not cause any property damage or injuries. It did throw a concoction into a burning building, causing a large amount of foam to erupt and extinguish the fire from within."
"So it's most likely that this Hawkmoth is a heroic individual who is trying to do good. But because of my mistakes, he is seen as a villain."
"It seems so."
"At least this one has better fashion taste than you did." Nathalie grinned a small smile.
"Don't remind me." He pressed his fingers to the bridge of his nose, "Some of those were definitely a mistake."
"No one would suspect a well-known and respected fashion designer of being a supervillain with fashion disasters like those."
"You won't let that go, will you?"
"No, Gabriel, I will not."
Gabriel chuckled.
"Well whoever has Nooroo now, I hope they're treating him better than I ever did."
Hugo was having a hard time focusing on the lesson, he couldn't keep his ears from listening in whenever someone spoke about Hawkmoth. Unfortunately, everyone was talking about him, or rather his super secret identity.
"I can't believe that creep is back."
"I'm pretty sure I saw an akuma on my way here, or maybe it was just a butterfly.."
"Crimson Chevalier and Felina will be able to save us if one of us is akumatized."
His empath ability wasn't making things better. Turns out, a side effect of wielding the butterfly miraculous is gaining a sense of emotions around him. Sometimes it was a tingly feeling, a piercing effect or a sensation that hit him like a truck. It depended on the emotion of the people around him. Right now, it felt like a wave of fear crashing into him like a tsunami. Everyone was on edge like they were just waiting for something to happen, something to strike.
"Earth to Hugo!" Quinn snapped her fingers in front of his face, bringing back to reality.
"Uh sorry, just lost in thought. What were you saying?"
"Well, for those unaware, my mother used to run a little site called the Ladyblog." She pulled up her phone to show the site, "It was a blog for the superheroes Ladybug and Chat Noir as well as other heroes."
"My mother is now a reporter for TVi and she has bestowed the responsibility of maintaining the Ladyblog onto me!" It almost looked like she was glowing with excitement and pride.
"Wait, so you're going to be blogging the battles?"
"Yep, so wherever this Hawkmoth fiend strikes, I will be there to report it."
"Aren't you afraid of getting hurt? You know with all the akumas?" Hugo didn't want to be the reason that his friend got injured when one of his champions was running around.
"I'll make sure to stay far enough so I don't get hurt. Besides Crimson Chevalier can fix any damage done from the fight with his Miraculous Cure."
"Right." Hugo muttered.
"Hey, if you're so worried, why don't you come along? I do need a cameraman to record my exploits."
"I'm good, I would probably flee at the first sight of an akuma, sorry." He also didn't want the pressure of maintaining his secret identity and recording his own fights. He really didn't like that word, akuma. Not only did it mean demon, but it made his champions sound like actual supervillains. If he was going to the butterfly holder, he was going to change that.
"Hugo, can I talk to you for a moment?" Antione tapped him on the shoulder.
"Sure."
The two headed into the hallway to talk. Hugo focused on his empathic ability to look into how Antione was feeling. It was...muddy? Like a mixture of emotions muddled together. He could pick up on a few; doubt, pride, and frustration
"Look, I'm sorry about what happened in the lunchroom, I wasn't quite comfortable with such a large group and I just kind of freaked out." He didn't want to tell him it was because he wasn't ready to confront his ex friend and panicked trying to run away like a coward.
"It's alright, I understand if someone just pushed me into a big group with no preparation. I just wanted you to fill this out for the class year." He pulled out a piece of paper from a binder. It was a simple outline of info such as name, gender, emergency info, allergies, etc.
"Doesn't the school administration take care of this?"
"Well as I am in charge of all class field trips, fundraisers, bake sales, and other events. I just wanted to get all of your necessary info."
"When do you need it back?"
"As soon as possible, you can give it to my vice president, Zelda Raincomprix." He pointed to the girl in the back of the classroom. Zelda had bright orange hair with dark blue eyes. She wore a plaid t-shirt with dark blue jeans and slip ons.
"I'll make sure to give it to her." As he said this, Antione's doubt seemed to fade and pride became stronger.
Hugo went back to his desk and looked over the info. By the end of the period, he had filled out the paper and went back to Zelda. He noticed she had a crushing weight on her, like she was holding the world on her shoulder.
"Hey, Zelda, right?"
"Yes, can I help you?"
"Antione told me to give this to you."
"Of course he did." She sighed, "I'll \put it with the rest of them."
"Yeah, sure." Hugo went back to his seat, grabbed his backpack on his way out and met up with Quinn and Percy in the hallway.
"I already have my first idea for a post." Quinn held up her phone.
"What is it?"
"An interview with the first akuma, Principal Mendeliev herself."
"And she agreed to it?" Hugo wasn't sure if she even remembered what happened.
"Yep, I have an appointment with her in just a few minutes."
Hugo hoped Mrs. Mendeliev hadn't noticed how young his voice sounded, he really didn't want the police to track him down through her interview.
Demeter Mendeliev was having a bad day, her coworkers looked as if she was a fragile doll ready to shatter in a million pieces. They thought she would want a few days break after being akumatized, but she was fine. Her first experience as Kwamibuster terrified her, Demeter was rarely afraid, she was a logical person, her beliefs were based in reason and science. Yet being used by a magical terrorist scared her. She thought she was strong enough to resist an akuma, but her anger and frustration got the better of her.
But when she was Alchemist, it was very different. She wasn't angry or agitated, she still had control and wasn't manipulated. He, the new Hawkmoth, had given her a choice and asked only for her help in return. Still people looked at her as if she was an anomaly. She hoped that this interview would clear up any stigma surrounding her or the new Hawkmoth.
"Thank you for giving the Ladyblog the opportunity to interview you, Mrs. Mendeliev." Quinn Lahiffe was a student in class. From what she had seen and heard, she was much like her mother, Alya. She had a thirst for the truth and would go the extra mile to get it. It was one of the reasons she allowed the interview in the first place, she wouldn't twist the truth for a story like the talk show hosts or big time reporters.
"I just hope to clear up any misinformation concerning my experience." She sat at her desk as Quinn set up the camera in front of them.
"Of course. First off, , where did the name, Alchemist come from?"
"I chose the name. Since I used to be the science teacher at Dupont, I thought it was fitting for my champion name."
"Champion, not Akuma?"
"No, the person who contacted me was not referring to me or it's creation, the butterfly as an akuma."
"You do not believe that this person was Hawkmoth?"
"No, they had several differences against Hawkmoth...though it's hard to remember."
"You do not remember what happened during the akumaization?"
"Only bits and pieces, I'm afraid."
"Can you at least tell us what you do remember?"
"The tone of voice was definitely different. It was younger, kinder, more understanding." She explained, "They did not ask for anything other than my assistance."
As she spoke, Quinn wrote down some notes in her notebook.
"They also seemed inexperienced, yet more excited about helping me than his own goals."
"The akumization seemed to last shorter than most. Could that be on account of said inexperience?"
"Most likely or they did not have as much control over their abilities as Hawkmoth did."
"What was that substance you threw into the burning building? Some have described it as being similar to fire extinguisher foam."
"It was most likely an extreme combination of hydrogen peroxide, potassium iodide, and dishwashing soap. Science teachers and students will know it by it's more common name, Elephant Toothpaste." She smiled as she recalled the awe-struck reactions of several generations of students as she created the experiment.
"I see, what emotions were you feeling before your akumatization?"
"Protection, to keep my students and the rest of the faculty safe. Worry because one of the students from another class was missing and was reported to still be in the building."
"So you weren't feeling any negative emotions usually associated with akumas?"
"No unless you consider the worry of a principal for one of their students to be negative."
"Anything you would like to say to our audience before we sign off?"
"No, that is all." wanted to say more, but she bit her tongue.
"Thank you, Mrs. Mendeliev and cut." With that, the camera was turned off and the recording ended.
"I wanted to ask something, off the record, if you had anything you wanted to say to Hawkmoth, what would you say?"
"I would thank him, if it hadn't been for his help, the school would not be standing today. Though Chevalier's cure fixed everything, he wouldn't be able to do anything without the akuma presence in the first place."
"Right." Quinn wanted to object, but had a point. The akuma hadn't done any damage or hurt anyone. From what her parents told her, akumas were dangerous and could even cause cataclysmic harm to the city.
Neither of them noticed the small lavender kwami exiting the room.
"Well, what did she say?" Hugo asked Nooroo. The black blue haired boy had sent Nooroo to eavesdrop on the interview.
"She seemed grateful for stopping the fire. She only remembers some things. You sounded inexperienced but she didn't pick up on your exact voice."
Hugo sighed in relief, "I thought she would hate me."
"Why would she hate you?"
"It's just people talk about becoming an akuma as a bad thing." He shrugged his shoulders, "No one likes their emotions manipulated against them then some bad guy turns them into a monster that is focused on one goal. It doesn't sound like a fun feeling. It's just weird being on the other side of that. Being the manipulator rather than the manipulated.
"You did not manipulate your principal. I know manipulation when I see it." Nooroo stared into the boy's green eyes, "What would you have done if she had said no?"
"I would've let her go and found someone else."
"Exactly, you gave her a choice, to be a hero or to stand on the sidelines. Not everyone would do what she did, but she did it, anyway."
"You're right." Hugo began to smile, "I may not be a hero now, but if I continue to be better than Hawkmoth, then maybe I have a shot at being one."
"You'll be better, you already are."
"We should practice, after all it won't be as easy as it was with ."
"Alright let's do it!" Hugo was excited, a refound energy within him.
Turns out finding someone to accept a butterfly was harder than Hugo imagined. During the afternoon, he rushed back to the manor from school. When he finally had some free time, he transformed in his room and focused on honing his abilities. He found making paper butterflies was a lot easier than catching live butterflies. It was a lot cheaper and he didn't want his grandfather to get curious why he needed or wanted a package of living butterflies.
Unfortunately, getting someone to accept was harder.
"Get out of my head!"
"&%#& you &%&%#*!"
"No, no, no!"
"Please don't hurt me!"
"Don't you dare go near my children!"
Needless to say, he nearly blew an eardrum while being insulted and yelled at by random people. At some point, they decided to take a break and Hugo face planted into his pillow.
"Don't beat yourself up over it, master." Nooroo said as he ate a marshmallow, "Not everyone is as trusting as ."
"You would think someone would want to be a superhero?! Everyone says they would want to be one if they could! But when I ask 'Hey, how would you like to be a superhero?' They say no and yell insults into my face!" Hugo ranted.
"It will be alright. We will find champions who have a strong sense of justice much like you, master."
"You talk about champions alot. Was that what the heroes were called before they were dubbed akumas?"
"Before Hawkmoth, most of my masters used a different word or phrase for their creations depending on what place they came from or their status in society." Nooroo explained, "Some used guardian, protector, soldier, but I like champion because it reminds me of my favorite holder."
"Who?"
"She was a kind, generous and wise young peasant who rose above her status to fight for her people and for her love." Nooroo smiled somberly, "I believe historians referred as Queen Guinevere of Camelot. But to me, she was just Lady Gwen."
"Wait, Camelot? Like the sword in the stone? King Arthur? The knights of the round table? Merlin?!"
"Not just Lady Gwen. Arthur had the dragon miraculous, which did give him a sword that could manipulate the weather and Merlin had the fox miraculous, creating illusions that many believed to be magic."
"That's so cool!" He couldn't even imagine a kingdom ruled by miraculous holders.
"It was, master. The knights of the round table were her main champions. All imbued with powers they could use to defend the kingdom of Camelot."
"What happened? I mean I know about Guinevere and Lancelot's tragic love, but was it real or just fiction?"
Nooroo sighed, "I'm afraid it was true. Though Arthur and Guinvere were married, the king grew temperamental and possessive of his queen, but the lady's heart belonged to Lancelot."
"I'm guessing Arthur didn't take it well."
"No, the dragon's wrath was powerful, he became unhinged and deranged. Even when Guinevere turned Lancelot into her champion, it wasn't enough to defeat the mad dragon. Lancelot was struck down and Guinevere detransformed and begged for Arthur to let her save her love's life. He didn't and Guinevere mourned her lover."
"What happened to her?"
"We left Camelot, traveled to a nunnery and Guinevere used the butterfly miraculous to create miracles until the end of her days."
"That's sad."
"It was, but Gwen never used the butterfly miraculous for evil or to avenge her lover. She kept her morals and beliefs intact until she passed away."
"So the butterfly miraculous was used for good."
"Indeed and it can still be used for good."
"I was wondering, why don't we go on patrol? I think we would have a better shot of finding a champion if we go out."
Nooroo smiled, "I don't see why not, master."
"Nooroo, wings rise!"
Felina was bored. It was never good for a cat to be bored. The black cat heroine tapped her clawed glove against the rooftop tile as her partner viewed through various new reels and police radios on his yoyo.
"Will you please stop doing that?" Crimson Chevalier snapped at her.
"Oh, I'm sorry, am I annoying you?"
"Yes, I know that there hasn't been much crime and I have kept a short leash on you with your antics."
"Aww, I'm flattered."
"I can't have you constantly causing destruction, people might start looking deeper into the accidents."
"But I'm bored!" She whined, "When is that stupid butterfly going to show his stupid face?"
"If he's as heroic as you said, he will come out to stop criminals and catastrophes."
"Catastrophes are my speciality, bug boy." She smirked, "Let me cause a blackout or two, I can take him out using my night vision."
"Tempting, but no." He smiled under his visor, "As much as we love the people's attention and adoration, we can't attract the bad kind."
"When has adoration been bad?"
"When it comes knocking at your door, demanding your prison sentence."
That shut Felina up and she turned towards her baton phone, hoping that it had a few games she could play on.
"Ahhh, here we go." He smiled as a jewelry shop was reported being robbed by several men in black masks.
"How do you feel about stopping a jewel heist?"
"If it means busting in a few heads, then I'm in." Felina lengthed her claws and leaped up off into the rooftops. Crimson Chevalier sighed, but followed behind his reckless partner.
He had hoped to meet the butterfly holder at least sometime, just so he could talk to the little pest. They intrigued him, were they using Hawkmoth's miraculous to create fear? Or were they truly trying to be a little hero? He almost scoffed at the thought. Crimson Chevalier was the only hero Paris needed, he just kept Felina around as a way to keep the holder of destruction by his side. He couldn't have such a chaotic and rash holder using her destructive powers blindly on the city of Paris. She had her use, but she would run out of uses soon enough. For now, he let the little kitty cat have her fun.
Hugo kept to the shadows as he glided along the roofs of Paris apartments. Okay, so he couldn't fly, he found that out by slamming head first into a billboard. But he could glide for a few minutes or seconds, he hadn't timed it, but he knew it was for only a short amount of time. He stopped when an alarm pierced his ears from a nearby jewelry shop. He took a few seconds to evaluate the emotions around him. Fear, nervousness and excitement? The first two he was expecting, since it was a robbery, but the third. Then he noticed red ombre hair peeking out of a hoodie riding a bicycle.
Quinn was here.
"What was she doing here? I know she's working for Ladyblog, but shouldn't she be following the hero-"
At that moment, a red yoyo took down several of the masked robbers as a black blur roundhouse kicked one of the thieves in the head.
"Well, that answers that question." He mumbled as he watched the heroes from afar. They didn't seem to notice him, as they fought and captured the thieves. At one point, Felina had used her cataclysm to keep the remaining thieves from escaping, placing her gloved hand on the supporting part of a street lamp.
Quinn just so happened to be in the area that the lamp was going to drop, and didn't notice it as she was recording the fight with her phone.
"Watch out!" Hugo leaped forward towards her, trying to get her to move. But she froze as soon as she saw it. He tackled her to the ground, the two rolled onto the pavement.
Bam! The streetlamp went down like a tree and could've crushed Quinn if Hugo hadn't come in the nick of time.
"T-Thank you. You saved my life." She looked at him with awe. "Who are you?"
He panicked, he hadn't thought of his superhero name, especially with how quickly his life changed since he got the butterfly miraculous.
"Um, I'm-I'm nobody, you didn't see anything or-or anyone." He quickly helped her up and sprinted off into the night.
Quinn was confused as the lavender figure ran from her. Her attention was divided as a crowd of cheering fans and the press surrounded the two heroes. She wanted to run after the mysterious hero who saved her life, but she also could get new content for the Ladyblog if she was able to get a closeup of Crimson Chevalier and Felina.
"Chevalier! Felina!" Quinn rushed towards the crowd, hoping to get at least a good post to share onto the blog.
She could catch her mysterious savior later, right now she had to talk to a bug and a cat.
