I didn't know how the others were feeling about the sight, but I was feeling like a child unwrapping presents on Christmas. The sight was a very welcomed one, it proved all of the hard work of the people standing in the room.
Evidence, cold hard evidence.
One bag held a long blonde hair, held up to the ceiling light in L's left hand, and another bag with small crumbs of some kind of food, sitting on the coffee table in the middle of the room.
"Watari, what about our contacts at CODIS?"
CODIS is a DNA database used heavily by the FBI and the United States, but other countries like China and parts of Europe have their sectors in CODIS. Japan is not one of these countries as they have their system. I only know this because as a rebellious teen I used to break into Steve's office and read random files on his desk. The small thought of Steve after all this time still hurt a little.
"Lost contact with them a few months ago, around the same time second Kira appeared."
"Ryuzaki, Japan has its own DNA database that we can use," Yagami spoke up, pushing his glasses back up his nose.
"I'm aware, but CODIS is quicker and I can watch over the process."
I wiggled in my seat, understanding the underline meaning of this conversation. L didn't want to give up control of his only solid lead.
"I have an old childhood friend at the forensics lab back at NPA, might be able to get the results rushed," Aizawa commented, grabbing his suit jacket off the back of his chair.
"...Very well, but please be careful."
We watched as Watari passed on the goods to Aizawa for the taking. I mentally wished him luck since it was just after midnight, he was seriously going to need it. The room stayed quiet for a few minutes causing me to notice L shift in his chair, the sound of the leather cushion giving him away.
"If I die in the next few days, please apprehend Light."
An orchestra of detest and disdain rung out, and at first I understood it. No one wants to think a coworker's son is a global mass murder, second, it's only natural to defend when you feel attacked. Nonetheless, the proof was starting to come in and it wasn't looking good for Light Yagami anymore.
I was opening my mouth sightly, about to push the words out and speak up about this favoritism behavior they show for Light when a steaming cup of light color liquid was forced upon me. Luckily my hands were empty and my reflex was good, spilling nothing on myself or the white-gloved hand that compelled me.
Another way of L's shutting people up for the moment.
I couldn't complain too much, just from the aroma I knew I was holding a cup of apple cinnamon tea, one of my favorites.
I thanked Watari as L abruptly stood up from his chair, sending the task force away for the night with the promise of a busier tomorrow. His words tickled my ear with interest as I passed off my drained teacup to be cleaned.
"Fess up, you're making a move soon arent you?''
I fell into the other chair position beside L's, still warm to the touch.
"You should also go to bed, you've stayed up almost as many nights as I have now."
I tried smiling his comment away, but a yawn leaked out, quickly moving a hand to my mouth.
"If you're just waiting on DNA tonight, you should catch a few hours yourself, L."
"Hmm, maybe."
I got up to excuse myself to the bedroom, one hand planted firmly on the doorknob, before turning my attention to the living room. Watari kept a few thin wooled blankets on the couch for those improved all-nighters. I slipped over to grab the closest one to me, then throwing it over L, who was staring at his screen intently.
Thinking my next words carefully I only wished him a good night and a wake-up call if he gets the results early.
I got drawn out of my dreamless sleep by a firm rapid session of knocks, by the speed I could determine that it was Watari on the other side of the bedroom door.
"Sorry, Miss. Petrillo, but L has requested your appearance."
I thanked him, sounding as tired as I felt. Glancing over at the clock, I watched the face change to five o'clock.
"Oh, and the task force will be here soon, so make yourself deceit."
Which was code for don't come out in your PJs looking for coffee like I normally did when it was just the three of us.
Jeans are uncomfortable to me.
After years of wearing slacks or pencil skirts, they just hugged too many places too much. I placed the borrowed book, facing up, between my shut thighs. I didn't find L's English textbook all that interesting, but it helped me blend into To-oh's bare campus.
I couldn't hear anything L, who had just gotten up from the bench he'd been perched on, was saying to Light from this distance. Only the hum from the collective noise of students enjoying the sunshine before class and the tiny earpiece buzzing against my ear canal with updates from the task force who were getting into position.
"Subject heading your way. Blonde, under avenge height, dressed in all black."
Like on cue, a petit yellow-haired young woman came running up the walking path, only slowing down to a pace when close enough to be noticed. Even from here, I could see how much control she was using around Light, keeping her hands full and in front of her.
So this was Misa Amane, the second Kira?
"Spotted and into position, moving in now, Watari."
Seeing a small group walking by talking about their upcoming exam, I hopped back onto my feet, and starting with them I spread the word of Misa's arrival.
"Hey, MisaMisa is over there!"
"I didn't know the Misa Amane went to this school!"
"I just saw MisaMisa walking around campus!"
I said whatever I could think of on the spot to draw people in, directing college students to the right place up to the campus entrance. There, waiting for their next moves, was Cheif Yagami and Aizawa. Both had their faces covered with the fancy helmets made from a titanium mixture and tinted face shield, handing me to put on quickly.
In no time at all, hearing her long before seeing her, the capture of Misa Amane went through without a hitch. The two men were able to get the cuffs on her while I wrapped the special metal-plated blindfold around her small face. She was almost able to get out a scream or a loud gasp, unsure what she was going for, but Aizawa placed the white gag over her painted lips.
As a finishing touch, I placed my helmet over her head to be better safe than sorry. The men released Misa into my custody, and I walked her to one of the borrowed patrol cars. I was surprised at how quiet the girl became once the gag came on, it wasn't anything fancy but it would have kept her silence as long as she had it on, but Misa didn't know all that, and yet she didn't even try to yell or cry and beg. All I could do about it was make a mental note about it and be thankful she wasn't fighting.
Getting her into the back was a breeze, and with the car coming with the standard plexiglass behind the driver and passenger seats for protection and noise-canceling, I made my report to Watari, who was waiting for me in the driver's seat.
The ride was a lot longer for the two of us, having to drive to the outskirts of the Tokyo prefecture. It didn't take me long to spot the large new building we were heading to in the horizons. The same thought I've had over and over again throughout the time I'd known Watari and L; They sure did like to spend money.
The parking garage was enormous, my swallow breathing was echoing off the cement walls. I was about to open the back door to the car when a throat clearing drew my head up, drawing my eyes to Watari.
"This will be the last time we'll be able to speak freely, Miss. Petrillo."
I nodded my head, urging him to continue his thought.
"Seeing since you won't be able to say it yourself, would you like me to say anything to Ryuzaki on your behave?"
I felt the flame of blood color my cheeks quicker than I had anticipated. That damn old man was getting a kick out of that situation.
"N-no, I'm fine."
"Very well, he had something to tell you then."
I held my breath, wondering.
" 'Don't do anything careless.' That's what he said."
I bit back the feeling of showing disappointment, this was L we were talking about. I seriously couldn't expect the man to change just because we almost acted on our feelings the other night, though I'd be lying if I didn't say I wouldn't have turned my nose at something with a little more affection.
"Fear not, Miss. Petrillo, he'll never admit it but he cares a lot for you."
I stared at Watari, blushing harder and becoming thankful that Misa couldn't possibly see me like this.
"Yes, er, well. Tell him I'll miss him as well."
