Echo absentmindedly scrolled on his phone as he waited in the reception of Obi-Wan's office. Perhaps it was selfish of them to hire Cody's boyfriend as Omega's therapists, especially when he offered them a considerable family discount. But without that discount, they might not have been able to afford the therapy Omega so desperately needed. Besides, they knew Obi-Wan was somebody they could trust. And if there was one thing Omega needed right now, it was adult figures in her life that she could trust.
Echo continued scrolling through his phone, refreshing Rex's Instagram for the third time, adamantly not looking at the calming pastel coloured walls. It had been years since he had been in a waiting room like this. Only the last time he had been in one, it had been for therapy of his own. Before he could stop himself, he found his gaze drawn to the prosthetic attached to the lower half of his right arm. The base of the prosthetic was the most widely available standard kind. All they could afford at the time. But Tech had done many adjustments to it over the years that sometimes helped Echo to trick himself into believing that it wasn't a fake limb after all.
But the pain of loosing his arm was nothing compared to loosing the life of his twin. It had been a normal Tuesday, Rex driving the pair of them back after a party, when a semi-truck had ran a red light thinking nobody would be out driving at that late hour. Echo hadn't woken up until hours later at the hospital. But Rex had watched, trapped against the front steering wheel as the life drained from Five's eyes. Afterwards Echo couldn't bare to stay in the room he had grown up with his twin in anymore, and had moved in his half-brothers.
When Echo had lost Fives, he had lost a part of himself. And only after years of therapy and the love of his brothers, he had finally been able to come to terms with it. He hoped that Omega would be able to eventually find the peace that he had.
The door to Obi-Wan's office creaked open, startling Echo from his thoughts.
"I look forward to our next session." Obi-wan said with a kind smile, as he held the door open.
"Yeah." Omega replied non-committedly, her hands tightly clutching her new folder to her chest.
"Thank you." Echo said, covering for her impoliteness, even though he knew Obi-wan wouldn't be offended. He stood up, placing his hands on her shoulder's, not missing the way her body leaned into his.
"You are most welcome." Obi-wan said, before turning his gaze back to glance at Omega one last time with fondness and determination. Echo could see why Cody was infatuated with the guy.
Echo gently guided, Omega out of the office as Obi-Wan's next client was called. She was quiet as the headed outside, the most withdrawn he had seen her since they had first brought her home.
"So, how was the first session?" He prompted.
Omega shrugged.
"Mr Kenobi talked about how that just because Mother loved her, didn't mean that she had always done what was best for me." She said without elaboration, her silence afterwards clearly indicating that she didn't want to talk about it.
Echo reminded himself that this was too be expected, thinking back on his own first few therapy sessions. You had to acknowledge the trauma before you could begin to mange dealing with it. And acknowledging it was a harder step than most people realised. Even though he wished that Omega never had to experience any of the pain she had gone through again.
Instead of asking her anymore questions, he held out his prosthetic. Omega took it without hesitation, clinging tightly as they began the short walk home.
As they continued to walk, Echo noticed her grip gradually lesson to a comfortable hold, that gently swung back and forth. By the time they arrived home, he was relieved that the spring in her step that had started to develop since they had rescued her had returned.
He placed his keys in the old front door, and opened it with a creak. Omega pushed past him, rushing towards where Gonky was curled up on the sofa. Echo left her to stroke the husky's soft fur as he headed for the kitchen counter, an idea sparking in his mind.
The others were still at work and wouldn't be home yet for another couple of hours, leaving them plenty of time for Echo to complete his plan. Once he had gotten out everything he needed, he called Omega.
The girl popped her head up from the back of the sofa, her cheek wet from where Gonky had given it a loving lick.
"Go clean yourself up!" Echo told her.
With one last pat to Gonky's head, she headed to the bathroom. A few minutes later, she reappeared, her face now free of slobber.
"What are you doing?" She asked, climbing onto one of the stools as she motioned to the equipment spread across the kitchen countertop.
"We are going to make a cake." Echo said.
The smile that lit up her face
"Really?" She exclaimed before adding shyly. "I've never made a cake before."
Echo smiled encouragingly.
"Don't worry. I can teach you."
He had become rather a good chef over the years if he did say so himself. When their dad had been around, Jango had never been the type for big family dinners so most nights they would be content with frozen nuggets and chips or takeout. So Echo had been forced to teach himself how to cook, missing the dishes his mother had used to make before she passed. Before long, he had become the designated cook of the family. And when he moved in with the quadruplets, it had just made sense for him to continue that role, since none of them had much culinary skills beyond the basics anyway.
Echo delighted in showing her how to measure out each of the ingredients, using Tech's new scales. Not even trying to supress a chuckle at her surprise when the flour exploded on her face in her haste to open the new packet. Both of their sides hurt with laughter when Gonky tried to bite ever dust of flour out of the air like snowflakes. Echo let her lick the spoon, careful to not let her eat too much of it lest she make herself sick as they waited for it to bake in the oven. Half an hour later, he took the fully cooked cake out of the oven, much to awe of Omega that these ingredients had come together to make something entirely new.
"What do we do next?" Omega asked eagerly as Echo placed the cake on a rack to cool down.
"Next comes the best part." Echo said with a grin, showing her the selection of coloured icing bag. Somehow, her eyes lit up even wider. Echo left it up to her to decorate whilst he started on cleaning up the mess they had inevitably made. He was finishing washing up the mixing bowl, when the door slammed open.
"We're back!" Wrecker cheered.
Echo glanced up, to see Omega bound towards the door, Gonky hot on her heels. Wrecker passed through the doorway to swing her up with a cry of glee, Gonky yelping at her ankles. Behind them, Echo spotted Hunter, Tech and Crosshair enter the home each of them telling Wrecker to be careful despite the smiles on their faces. They must have picked Crosshair up on their way home from whatever sorry apartment Cid had them fixing up today.
"Me and Echo made a cake!" Omega exclaimed once Wrecker had set her down.
"Really?" Wrecker asked with a warm smile, placing a hand on her shoulders to steady her dizzy form.
"Yes! Come see!"
Echo rolled his eyes as his nearly two-hundred-pound brother stumbled as he was dragged by a barely fifty pound girl towards the counter. He put away the final bowl to dry before joining them.
He hadn't seen what she had drawn until now. Six stick figures of icing had been drawn on top of the cake. The middle figure wore a red bandana. On either side was one with glasses and another with a target tattoo over the eye. The next were both bald although one had a prosthetic arm and the other a colourless eye. And finally at the bottom was a figure so small it nearly fell off the side of the cake, with a mop of blonde hair holding the outline of an even smaller husky. Above the drawings in wonky writing were the words: our family.
Echo turned his gaze back to Omega who was glancing between their brothers in apprehension. Echo didn't have to look to know that they each had the same expression of touched shock on their faces.
"What do you think of the decoration?" Omega asked, the nerves she was clearly trying to hide seeping through.
"It's perfect." Echo smiled, using his prosthetic arm to pull her into his side. She broke out into a beam that only made Echo smile harder.
"Come on, let's dig in whilst it's still warm."
After each of them got a slice containing their corresponding picture as per Omega's request, Echo watched as the girl lifted the piece to her mouth, mentally panicking over whether they had forgotten any ingredients so as to not ruin her first experience of cake. He needn't have worried, as soon as her mouth closed, her eyes widened to the size of dinner plates, eagerly chewing to taste as much as possible.
"This is the best thing I have ever eaten in my life! It tastes so much better then vitamins!" She said through her mouthful.
Echo refused to let her words break his heart. This had been perfect moment. He would not allow another second in Omega's life to be ruined by her. So instead he chose to cut Omega another slice.
"It sure does kid. It sure does."
