Chapter One: Orientation!

"Alright Kiki, are you ready to go?" Makoto asked as he and Kyoko stood at the door.

Kiki nodded and exclaimed "You got it, Dad, just saying goodbye, that's all." She turned around and faced her three siblings and dog before she kneeled down to their level and told them "Alright, Koto, Kiri, stay out of trouble, okay? I'm gonna be rooming at school a lot, but I'll be back on weekends to check on you."

"Don't worry, Kiki!" Koto told his older sister.

Kiri meanwhile nodded and assured "We'll behave while you're gone."

Kiki nodded approvingly before she glanced at her eldest brother and told him "Alright Moku, I'm gonna be away during the weekdays, so I need you to take care of Hogo for me, okay?"

Mokubo nodded solemnly, making his sister smile before she hugged her dog around the neck.

"I'm gonna miss you, boy. Make sure to protect everyone while I'm gone, like you protected me."

Hogo barked, then licked her cheek, causing Kiki to giggle before she reluctantly pushed him away and stood up. She then walked over to her grandparents and hugged them.

"We're really proud of you, Kiki." Shingi told his granddaughter, causing his wife to smile and nod.

"I remember when we dropped off your father at Hope's Peak Academy…to think things are coming full circle."

Makoto chuckled as he walked over to them and remarked "Let's hope her journey at Hope's Peak ends up being different from mine." All the adults nodded in agreement, Kiki let go and told her grandparents "I've gotta go so I'm not late for my orientation…but I love you both."

"We love you too, Kiki." Hana told her granddaughter proudly. "Have fun at Hope's Peak."

"And stay out of trouble." Shingi teased, causing Makoto to smile.

"Don't worry Dad, I'll keep her out of trouble." Makoto assured his father. "Alright Kiki, let's go so we can start your first day and get you settled in."

Kiki nodded, then turned back and waved as she called "Bye!"

"Bye, Kiki!" They called back before she followed her parents outside, closing the door on one chapter of her life as she was about to open another.

Kiki stared nervously at the building that towered over her, the excited young girl beginning to sweat nervously. Makoto chuckled, feeling a sense of déjà vu as he rested his hand on her shoulder.

"Yeah, I remember feeling the same way when I fist came to Hope's Peak."

Kiki nodded and admitted "I know I came here a few times as a little girl, but now that I'm actually a student, it feels…more intimidating, somehow."

Kyoko nodded and replied "That's understandable. I think we all felt a little nervous the first time we came to this school as teenagers. Just remember that at the end of the day, this is just a school, so as long as you put your best foot forward, you'll be fine."

"…Okay, Mom."

Makoto smiled and told his daughter "Alright, your mother and I have to head in and prepare for the orientation ceremony. Why don't you head through the main entrance and check in? Someone from Campus Security will take your belongings and bring them to your dorm room. Once that's done, why don't you head to the main hall and try to bond with your new classmates? We'll make an announcement once we're ready to start."

"Okay, Dad." She replied as Makoto and Kyoko quickly hugged her.

"Have a great first day, sweetie!" Kyoko told her with a smile.

"See you later, Mom!" Kiki called as Makoto and Kyoko waved while they headed inside.

Kiki took one last deep breath as she looked up at the intimidating architecture before she steeled her nerves.

"Alright, Hope's Peak Academy, here I come!"

Kiki nervously walked into the main hall, glancing around at the crowd of students that had gathered. She barely took a step when they all turned to glance at her. Kiki smiled awkwardly and waved before they turned back towards each other and began to whisper.

"Who's that? Another new kid?"

"Not just any new kid, that's Naegi Kiki-chan!"

"You mean the headmaster's daughter?"

"Isn't she the one who defeated that Akki chick who tried to destroy the world again?"

"Yeah, like father like daughter."

"Guess that makes her the Princess of Hope's Peak Academy."

Kiki sighed as she lamented Not this again…it's just like elementary school all over again!

"Guess last year's crisis made you famous, huh?"

Kiki gasped to see her two best friends smiling at her. Kiki beamed as she tackled them into a hug.

"Tsumugi, Gonta, it's great to see some familiar faces!" Kiki exclaimed.

"Us too, Gonta was nervous about coming." Gonta nodded as he admitted "Gonta hopes that Campus Security doesn't accidentally hurt Gonta's bug friends."

"I'm sure they'll be fine, Gonta." Tsumugi assured him. "I just hope they don't mess up any of my cosplays and manga I brought with me." She shook the thought away and wondered "So, I wonder how hard it'll be to make friends, especially with the gossip we just overheard."

Kiki nodded nervously, hoping that her new classmates would be able to look past the reputation and see the normal girl beneath the surface.

"Well, I guess we'll just have to…no way…" Kiki trailed off as she saw a familiar face just outside the crowd. The black uniform and hat may be new, but I'd recognize that blue hair and those nervous eyes… "Hey, Saihara-kun!"

"Huh?" Shuichi looked around before his eyes settled on the ecstatic young girl. As she ran up to him with a curious Tsumugi and Gonta in tow, Shuichi smiled apologetically and asked "Sorry, have we met before? You look vaguely familiar, but I'm having trouble placing the name."

Kiki smiled softly as she admitted "I guess it has been a while. I'm Kiki Naegi, we met when Akamatsu-chan's mother played at Maki and Kaito's wedding."

"Hmm…" Shuichi's eyes widened as he realized "Oh, Naegi-chan! Sorry, it's just been a while since that wedding, so…"

"It's okay, I get it." Kiki assured him. "So, you're attending Hope's Peak too? I guess this means we'll be classmates."

"Yeah, I…guess so…"

"Let me introduce you to my friends, Saihara-kun!" Shuichi yelped as Kiki genlty tugged him by the wrist over to Tsumugi and Gonta, introducing "Tsumugi, Gonta, this is Shuichi Saihara! I met him at a wedding I attended when we were still in elementary school. Saihara-kun, these are my two best friends, Tsumugi Shirogane and Gonta Gokuhara."

"Ah, nice to meet you both." Shuichi told them nervously, causing the two to smile.

"It's nice to meet you too, Saihara-kun. Are you a detective by any chance? You look a lot like that Detective Conan!"

"Ah…a little, though I'm still training…"

Gonta smiled and replied "As long as you do your best, that's all you can do! Gonta hopes Gonta and Saihara-kun can be good friends!"

Shuichi smiled and nodded, causing Kiki to giggle and clap before she announced "Alright, now we're all acquainted…" Her brow furrowed suddenly as she asked "By the way Saihara-kun, where's Akamatsu-chan? I figured you two would have enrolled together."

A brief shadow of sadness enveloped Shuichi's eyes before he forced it away, smiling as he told her "Ah, no, Kaede's enrolled in a fancy music school overseas. But we still talk, and she's really loving it over there."

Kiki nodded, frowning as she could tell that Shuichi's smile was forced.

What could have happened t make Saihara-kun so sad at the mention of Akamatsu-chan's name? Could something have ha…

"Oh, Kiki!" Gonta interjected as he pointed "There's the waitress from our date."

"Hm?" Shuichi asked curiously "You two are dating?"

Kiki shook her head and explained "No, we went on one date, but broke it off as it just wasn't working out." Kiki shifted her gaze to the direction Gonta was pointing in before she said softly "You're right Gonta, it's Tojo-chan!"

The sage-haired waitress turned her head curiously to the group and walked over. Kirumi politely smiled before she bowed to them, making the group of classmates shuffle awkwardly.

"Greetings, my name is Kirumi Tojo, and I look forward to getting to know you all as classmates. If there is anything you desire, please inform me and if it is within my capabilities, I shall do my best to fulfill your requests."

Ano…you're not our maid… Kiki thought before she smiled and replied "Yoroshiku, Tojo-chan…you might not recognize us, but…"

"…I previously served you and your companion here, I remember." Seeing Kiki and Gonta's surprise, Kirumi explained "In my profession, it's considered rude to forget your patrons, so I try to commit each one to memory."

"That's really impressive!" Kiki exclaimed before she turned to her other classmates. "I'm Kiki Naegi, my date from that one night here is Gonta Gokuhara, this is Tsumugi Shirogane, and this is Shuichi Saihara."

All of them bowed politely just before a familiar voice echoed in the main hall.

"Attention all incoming students. Please make your way to the gymnasium for orientation. You'll find directions throughout the hallway to ensure none of you get lost."

"…Well, shall we go?" Kiki asked before all the students congregated and began to move out of the main hall.

Kiki sat nervously in her chair, sandwiched between two students that she didn't know. She knew it was just because of where her last name fell in the alphabet, but she still wished that she could have sat next to Tsumugi and Gonta.

Even Saihara-kun or Tojo-chan would be preferable to not knowing anyone next to me… She thought, though before she could think any more about it, her parents walked up on stage, Kyoko standing by her husband as he approached the podium and tested the microphone.

"All incoming students, my name is Headmaster Makoto Naegi, and allow me to welcome you to Hope's Peak Academy. We're all very excited to have you here as you make the final steps in your educational crusade and move out into the world to start your adult lives. In addition to your standard class schedules, we also have a number of facilities where you will be able to train and grow your talents. You are all talented, whether it be in theatre, tennis, programming, or any other skill, we hope to help you all develop and take pride in your talents."

Makoto paused before Kyoko handed him a small tablet device which he held up for everyone to see.

"This is the e-Handbook, your personal multimedia device. Think of it as a Hope's Peak exclusive IPad. Each one has been custom-designed to fit you specifically. We'd prefer you not lose them, but if you do happen to misplace them, please send my office an email and we'll replace them." The students nodded in their seats as Makoto continued "Lastly, my office has an open-door policy, so if any of you need to speak with me for any reason, don't feel shy about coming by my door. I'm here to help you if you need it." He glanced over to Kyoko and finished "Next, Vice Headmistress Kirigiri has some things to say to you all."

Kyoko nodded as Makoto stepped back before she approached the podium and spoke "Thank you, Headmaster Naegi. My name is Vice Headmistress Kyoko Naegi. I think it goes without saying that we expect you all to be on your best behavior while enrolled in Hope's Peak Academy. Hope's Peak has a legacy as a prestigious high school and a beacon of hope, and we expect you all to represent that legacy."

Mom's definitely more strict at her job than she is at home… Kiki realized as she listened to her mother's firm voice.

"That doesn't mean we don't want you to enjoy yourselves. We encourage you to enjoy yourselves and have fun with your classmates and friends, but troublemaking will not be tolerated. If any of you are found to be violating school regulations, you will be summoned to my office to be disciplined." Kyoko's eyes darkened, making even Kiki shiver as she told them "Don't give me a reason to summon you to my office."

Her expression relaxed before she stepped away from the podium, allowing her husband to take the stage once more.

"Thank you, Vice-Headmistress Naegi. Alright, that concludes this year's orientation ceremony. I will now call your names so each of you can pick up your e-Handbook and dorm room key. After that, you are free to go to your dorm rooms or explore the campus at your leisure. As six o-clock, there will be a welcome dinner at the dining hall, so please make sure you attend."

With that, Makoto began to call names, followed by the students walking to the podium and picking up their e-Handbook and dorm key before they returned to their seats.

"Gokuhara Gonta."

Kiki watched as Gonta walked up and gratefully took his belongings before returning to his seat. Makoto continued calling out names which Kiki didn't recognize until she at last heard her own name.

"Naegi Kiki."

Kiki took a deep breath and stood up before she walked over to her father, taking the key in one hand and the e-Handbook in the other. She glanced up at her father's expression, and although it was largely the same expression that he had shown to all the other students, she could detect a hidden warmth within his pupils reserved for his family and close friends. Kiki smiled and bowed before she returned to her seat.

"Saihara Shuichi. Tojo Kirumi."

Kiki watched her two new classmates walk up and retrieve their belongings, Shuichi with an obvious nervousness and Kirumi with a certain grace and politeness that demanded as much respect as she gave to others.

Once the last of her class had received their e-Handbook and key, they all stood up and collectively filed out, Makoto and Kyoko smiling at the new class, looking forward to how the next year would turn out.
