"Can I go to school?"
Hunter resisted the urge to sigh. Omega hd been living with them for over a month at this point. He should have expected that question by now. Hunter glanced up from the sheets of paper displaying the dismal states of their accounts to see Omega standing on the opposite side of the kitchen counter. She wrung her hands with nerves, despite the hopeful expression on her face, still anxious about asking anything for herself. Hunter recognised the expression from his own face, when years ago he had asked Ninety-Nine the same question, prepared to take the consequences instead of his brothers for being the one who had asked.
He knew that Omega would have no trouble with the work. Say what you will about Nala Se (and Hunter could say a lot) but she had made sure her kids knew their maths and science. Plus, Omega had not had any trouble keeping up with the work Tech had been setting her since she had come home.
No, that was not what Hunter was worried about. It was the social aspect that terrified him. Those first few months at a school that was illequiped to deal with his brothers's physical and mental disabilities as well as studnts who were all too eager to pick on them because of them, had been hell. But at least then Hunter had his brothers by his side. Omega had no one. She had never even interacted with a child her own age before. As tough as it had been for his brothers, Hunter knew that it would be a million times worse for her.
Still, Hunter had made a promise to himself to never deny the girl happiness again. And if going to school would make her happy, then he would not be the one stop her. Plus, as much as he hated to admit it, they couldn't afford to keep home-schooling her. No matter how many extra shifts they would take for Cid, it would never add up to the amount of a full days wage they would make which they had been losing ever since taking Omega in, as she was required to have someone watch over her at all times. Sending her to school, might be the only way for them get the shifts they so desperately needed to afford the legal bills and therapy sessions that Omega deserved.
"Alright." Hunter said. "I'll talk to Obi-Wan about it and if he agrees then yes, you can go to school."
Hunter couldn't stop his smile at seeing the absolute joy that took over Omega's face. He watched as she shrieked in happiness before running off around the house to tell everyone else the news. Hunter only hoped that he had made the right decision.
A week later, with the seal of approval from Obi-Wan who thought that spending time with other children would be beneficial to Omega's recovery, Hunter found himself standing outside the gates of Alliance Ellemntary. He didn't miss the suspicious glances of mothers dropping off their own kids at his conspicuous grey van, oil stained overalls or the skull tattoo that covered half of his face. For a moment Hunter was transported back to his own first day of school, receiving those similar judgmental glares. He glanced down at Omega besides him, who hadn't seemed to have noticed the stares but still had a nervous expression on her face.
"Are you sure you want to go?" Hunter asked, almost hoping she would say no. "You can start tomorrow instead if you want? Or even wait till the start of the next school year."
But Omega shook her head, her expression shifting into one of determination.
"Yes. I can do this." She told him. Hunter had never felt so proud. He pulled her into a hug, not letting ago until the bell sounded for registration. Reluctantly, he let Omega go, watching her clutch the straps of her new backpack. Hunter didn't stop waving goodbye until she entered the building, giving one last wave of her own.
At two o'clock Hunter found himself once again waiting anxiously at the gates of Allince Elementary. He told himself not to worry. Bly had sent his own daughter here and Hunter trusted his half-brother's judgemnt. Plus Hunter had spoken to Omega's home room teacher earlier in the week. She was a kind woman named Breha Organa who was sympathetic to Omega's situation having adopted a little girl herself. Omega also had all of her brothers as well as Obi-Wan's phone numbers so she could call them, just in case anything happened and as far as Hunter was aware, none of them had received a call from her today. So logically, Hunter knew that everything had probably gone okay. That didn't stop him from worrying though.
As soon as his watch hit half-past, the school's doors burst open to a stampede of children in a hurry to get home. With his keen eyes, Hunter was quickly able to spot Omega amongst the crowd.
"Omega!" He called.
"Hunter!" She cried back, running towards him.
"Hey kid." Hunter said, struggling to lift her into his arms. She was getting heavy. Had she really grown this much in just a month?
"How was your first day?" He asked once she was settled on his hip.
"It was amazing! We did our times tables and I was the only person who knew all the twelves. I got to play outside three times. Once for a whole hour! Also I made a new friend. Her name is Hera. Did you know her Uncle let her help him drive a tractor once? And her favourite colour is green! And-"
As Omega babbled on, a grin wide across her face, Hunter felt all his worries fade away.
