Warning: long author note, but please read for some explanations!
This is a request from RAMA-san! And I have to apologize for taking so much time to start (even though I've been thinking and scribbling about it since the request was made lol)
First things first, I have never done a crossover before, nor wrote the main characters in another anime's universe. This one will be a Nejiten fic (because I really can't write Other things aside Nejiten, dunno why) in Haikyu universe. I really love both Naruto, an anime I watched since I was a wee little kid, and haikyu, an anime I discovered in the beginning of the year and came to love, introducing it to my niece who now plays volleyball because of it, and because is my favorite sport of sorts and kind of dragged her around when I went to play with friends. So this being the first crossover I ever do, please take it easy with me. Also, i Will try to adapt the story with Naruto characters, so it will be different from the anime, but not that different. No manga will be included in here, since I just watch the anime.
RAMA-san, and probably some other people that read some of my two latest stories, are probably used with me posting a new chapter almost every day. Unfortunately though, I'm an electrical engineering student (that also explains my not so great writing skills), and classes came back, so I'm kind of really busy with studies and so, this being another reason why it took me like three weeks (?) to post the first chapter since the request. In other words, it will take me some time to post new chapters, but I promise to do my best to post at least one per week! (Chapter will also be a little shorter than the usual 3~4k plus words)
This being a prototype project of a crossover (can I call this that?) I highly appreciate all forms of reviews, to know how well, or bad, I am doing this, alongside suggestions and so on.
As I said before, this will be a Nejiten, can't see Tenten or Neji with anyone else, but for Haikyu characters, I never really thought about pairings with them, so I'll let it be decided by you all, or by how the story goes.
Lastly, im not a native English speaker, English is actually my third language, so please forgive me for grammar errors.
Sorry for the looooooong author's note, so let's go to the story.
Disclaimer: I don't own Naruto or Haikyu.
Prologue
"Please! Tenten-san!" Tenten sighed, looking at both boys begging in front of her. One of them was short with spiky hair, a puff of bleached blonde hair falling over his forehead, while the other guy was taller with a shaved head. They were good friends of her, although they were sometimes too loud, something that almost all her friends seemed to be.
Feeling the eyes of curious classmates on them, she sighed again, drumming her fingers on her desk.
"I'm already busy with archery, I can't really help much the volleyball club..." she offered the boys an awkward smile, fingers still drumming on her desk anxiously. She didn't like to gather so much attention, and right now, her friends were doing that for her.
"We are not asking you to come everyday! Just come whenever you can!" Nishinoya, the smaller boy with pointy hair pleaded.
"Yes! Your help would help Shimizu-senpai a lot!" Tanaka, the taller one, added. Tenten squinted her eyes.
"Are you just trying to get me to help for the sake of Shimizu-senpai?" Tenten asked both boys, smirking with the shocked looks the boys gave her. She knew she hit jackpot.
"O-of course not! The team would also benefit highly from your extraordinary help!" Nishinoya tried to defend himself.
"Really? And how so?" Tenten asked again, not surprised with that answer. It was a common knowledge around all school that she was a skilled athlete, knowing at least the basics of every sport, not to mention that she was one of the best track athletes in elementary. However, she only knew the basics of volleyball, not enough to really add something for them, and with her being the captain of the archery club, she didn't have exactly time to participate in other sports. "For all I know, you already have a very good coach, not to mention that I heard that some really good first year students entered the team."
"Your aim!" Tanaka exclaimed, gathering more attention yet than they already had, for her dismay. Tenten lifted an eyebrow in question, fingers stopping the drumming.
"Yes, yes! You could teach us how to practice our aim!" Tenten sighed for the third time. they really were desperate.
"You know, your aim will only get better with practice..." she monotony pointed out, making the boys pout, "... and why me anyway? There's plenty of other people who could help!" There should be other girls that were somewhat free that could help them. Or at least freer than her!
"You are the only one we know that could handle the team" both said in union with a blank faces, waiving a hand in front of them. She groaned, resisting the sudden urge to slam her head on her desk.
"Fine! But I will only go when I do have the time!" She finally conceded, because she was tired of the begging, and because she was friends with some of the team members, so it wouldn't be something so bad to do, right? Nishinoya's and Tanaka's faces lit up.
"Thank you so much Tenten-san! You will not regret it! We swear!" They flashed her a bright smile that would rival Lee's, and dashed out of the classroom, leaving her with the curious stares alone. Tenten let out a long breath.
"What have I gotten myself into?"
It was practice day, like every day, but the boys of the Karasuno volleyball team were extra pumped for practice. Even though they just lost against Aoba Johsai, it gave them only more fuel to get better and better. The practice didn't even start, but some members of the team were already warming up in the court. The three third year students watched over while the rest of the team uncommonly stretched quietly, but happy.
"It's nice to see that everyone is in good spirits" Sugawara, a calm looking boy said to the other two guys, looking as the members of the team had a happy expression while stretching.
"Indeed" Daichi, the captain of the team, agreed.
"Kageyama! I wanna spike!" An energetic orange haired little guy bounced around a tall, black haired man. The trio looked their way, smiling at their interaction.
"I was wondering when they would begin" the captain mused. Suga chuckled while the other man sighed.
"I was enjoying the lack of noise" the other man, Asahi, the tallest of them three, murmured. The other two laughed.
"I heard you, now stay quiet Hinata you idiot!" Kageyama, who the energetic boy, Hinata, was still bouncing around, snapped and glared down at him. Hinata glared back.
"I was quiet!"
"No, you weren't!"
"But I didn't say anything else!"
"You were jumping... loudly!"
"Did I miss the time that the circus started?" A really tall blonde walked in, a sarcastic expression on his face. Hinata glared at him, while the other just ignored, turning to walk up to the net.
"What did you say, Tsukishima you bastard?" Hinata barked out.
"You want to spike or not?" Kageyama asked Hinata, ignoring the blonde completely.
"Yeah!" Gleaming in happiness, Hinata went for a volleyball ball, starting their crazy fast attacks practice, forgetting about Tsukishima.
"I don't really get how can they have so much energy" the blonde murmured while watching Hinata jump around while Kageyama tossed the ball at him with lighting speed.
"Be nice Tsuki, they just love volleyball" Tsukishima's friend, Yamaguchi, told him by his side.
"They are volleyball idiots" rolling his eyes, Tsukishima turned to his friend "that reminds me, we are missing another two volleyball idiots"
"KIYOKO-SAN!" A yelling came from the court doors.
"Never mind, they've arrived" Tsukishima meekly commented, while Yamaguchi chuckled, amused. The girl in question looked up from what she was doing, only to be greeted by an energetic duo.
"Yes? Nishinoya-San, Tanaka-San?" She asked with a gentle voice.
"We have great news!" Nishinoya started, Tanaka nodding his head in excitement. The girl looked at them suspiciously.
"Yes?"
"We managed to convince Tenten-san to help us!" Tanaka and Nishinoya smiled brightly, giving her a thumbs up, really proud of their doing. At the mention of another girl's name, the attention of most of the team was picked. Hinata even forgot to hit the ball Kageyama had just tossed him. If Kageyama wasn't interested in the conversation as well, he would have scowled the smaller boy. The only one who apparently wasn't all that interested was Tsukishima.
"Um, what?" Shimizu asked, she was confused with what they meant.
"Tenten-san! She is going to help you with the volleyball team when she can" Nishinoya explained, nodding his head.
"Yeah, we saw how hard you were working, and we thought that Tenten-san could help, even if just a little" Tanaka joined in explaining. Shimizu softened her expression.
"I appreciate the concern and the initiative, but isn't Tenten-san already busy with archery? I know the women's team tried recruiting her to participate, but she declined due to her duties as archery captain" she softly told the boys, concerned that the overworking would go to someone else.
"But she won't come here everyday, just when she is free. She agreed to help around when she could! Plus, archery isn't everyday, it's actually just on Tuesdays and Thursdays" Nishinoya eased her worries.
"Who is this Tenten person?" Hinata butted in, curiosity getting the best of him, accompanied by some other curious members.
"Mitsashi Tenten is a second year student, she is known as the captain of archery club" Shimizu started explaining.
"She is the best! We had classes together last year, that's how she got to know some of the members of the club" Nishinoya added.
"She is scary when angry" Asahi commented while scratching the back of his head.
"That's why she will be good in here! While Kiyoko-san can make us behave with just her angelic aura, Tenten-san can make us behave with her scary aura!" Tanaka told everyone while grinning. Shimizu just sighed, while some other members sweat dropped.
"Why can't I make you behave with an angelic aura too?" A voice came from the doors, making everyone turn their attention to it. There stood a girl, with her signature twin buns, hazel eyes watching them playfully. "Today there is no archery, so I might as well see how I can actually help you guys" she said while approaching them, grinning.
"Who are you?" Kageyama asked coolly, making Hinata gag and Tsukishima snicker. Tanaka punched his head.
"Where you not listening you dumbass! That's Tenten-san, your senpai!" Tanaka scowled him, some chuckles rang through the court.
"That's right, I'm Mitsashi Tenten, nice to meet you all" Tenten gave them a bright smile. "I will try to help you in any way I can" some members blushed, but most smiled back anyway, nodding.
"Thank you Tenten-san, I understand that you are usually very busy, but I appreciate you lending us a hand" Shimizu looked up at her, as Tenten was slightly taller than her, then bowed, a sweet smile on her face.
"Don't worry about it, Shimizu-senpai, it will be a good workout I guess" Tenten grinned, bowing as well in respect. "So how can I help?"
"They really like volleyball" Tenten thought out loud while she watched as everyone joined up to ask for another match before the coach, Ukai, called the end of practice. A giggle by her side made her jump.
"They are. And even though we just lost an important match, that just made them be even more passionate about getting better" Shimizu commented by her side. Tenten hummed.
"That's nice, good to know that they don't get down so easily. I mean, I knew that Nishinoya and Tanaka don't give up even if hell freezes, but knowing that the rest is determined like them is reassuring. Especially the first year ones, I'm still impressed at how fast those two can attack, the orange one, Hinata his name? He has some messy receptions, and his serve is basic, but he can surely run and jump. With the impeccable aim and ball control of the black haired setter, they sure make a scary duo..." she told her, seeing another quick attack from the duo in question, "I wonder if the setter would be good in archery" she murmured thoughtful.
"I doubt that Kageyama would leave volleyball for archery, he loves this sport too much" Shimizu chuckled. Tenten chuckled too.
"I guess you're right" they kept watching as the boys played in comfortable silence.
"What about next year?" Tenten suddenly asked, startling Shimizu, who looked at her confused. Sensing her confusion, Tenten added "you won't be here next year, and there's no way I can replace you..." she trailed off.
Shimizu glanced at the team again thoughtful, a sad gleam in her eyes.
"You're right..." she said softly, "I've been thinking about it for a while... I'm planning on looking for an assistant who could replace me next year..." she confessed. Tenten gave her a warm smile.
"I'm sure you'll find someone who will take care of them as good as you. I can't promise, but I'll try to help too"
"You are too kind, Tenten-san. But I doubt you will have much time, there's a lot that goes on the third year" Shimizu commented, remembering the challenges of studying for the college entrance exams.
"That's why I'm not promising anything, but I'll try my best, Shimizu-senpai!" Tenten grinned at her, making her smile at the taller girl.
Just when practice was finally over, the girls said their goodbyes while Tenten watched as the third year boys of the team walked out with Shimizu.
"Kageyama! I wanna spike, toss the ball to me!" 'Ohh no, you gotta be kidding me', Tenten thought. It was bloody late already, they practiced for God know how long already, and Hinata wanted more?
"Ok" KAGEYAMA WANTED MORE TOO!?
"Give up, those two are bird brain idiots with infinite energy" the tall blonde, who she remembered was called Tsukishima, commented after sensing her distressed state.
"You gotta be kidding me" she sighed, defeated.
"You can go home, you know" Yamaguchi commented, then said his goodbyes, running to catch up with his friend.
"He's right, you can go, I'll watch over them. It's my duty as senpai after all!" Tanaka commented smiling by her side, "Nishinoya is joining them anyway" he pointed out as the spiked haired little guy was indeed, ready in his libero position. Tenten laughed.
"It's ok, I'll watch, I live close by anyway" and so, she watched them practice, until it was so late, she had to threaten them to go home and get some god blessed sleep, or else she would use them as targets for archery practice.
How was it for the first chapter? Took me some time to write it, and I'm not sure it is good still, but I guess that your opinion will help me better than just bang my head on the wall thinking... I'll admit that I had a hard time with the Haikyu characters, but that's probably because I never read any Haikyu fanfic. I'll try to make time to read some to have better ideas on how to write them better.
More Naruto characters to come!
Anyway, thank you for reading! And please review, let me know what you think!
Till next time, be safe everyone!
