Episode 5: Trickery at its Finest
"This is all so heavy!" Akria said as she carried the groceries in both hands. Eva was doing the same as Pit walked ahead of them. "Pit, why do we need all this food?"
"Because Ang is going to make a banquet tonight!" He said with sparkling eyes. "She's making a lot, so I wanted to get her ready!"
"You really like my sister's cooking, don't you?" Eva snorted.
Pit smiled, "Well yeah! Don't tell Lady Palutena, but Ang's cooking is way better." He whispered.
"Damn, Pit." Akria giggled.
Eva whispered to Akria. "Should we set them up on a date? It would be fun!"
"I believe it's too soon..." Akria whispered back. "...Let's see how things play out first."
Eva was about to reply when the trio heard screams of fright. They looked to see Underworld monsters led by Pandora terrorizing people.
Eva paused, gazing at the scenery in shock. "Wait...h-how is Pandora HERE?!"
Akria grit her teeth. "I'm not sure, but I don't think we can wonder about that right now."
"You're right, Akria." Pit said as out down the groceries and summoned his bow. "Let's get her!"
"On it!" Akria took out her medallion and raised it up high. "Let's go! Celestial Evolution!" Then she transformed into Angel Crimson.
"Hm?" Pandora looked and smiled at the sight of Pit and Crimson showing up. "Well now, that was faster than I thought. Usually it takes about five minutes or more for you all to show up."
"It usually takes less than 5 minutes for you to cause trouble!" Eva snapped.
Pandora tsked. "Ooh, getting frisky aren't you, little girl?"
Crimson stood in front of Eva to protect her.
"This nonsense ends now, Pandora!" Pit said, readying his weapon.
Pandora just giggled and smirked at Crimson, who looked at her confused. The Goddess snapped her fingers and the ground beneath Eva and Crimson's feet vanished. The girls fell into some kind vortex and Pit looked back to see them screaming.
"Crimson! Eva!" Pit dashed over to them but was too late, the girls were gone and so was the vortex.
"Where did you take them?!" Pit demanded as he turned around to face Pandora. She only waved her hand.
"Relax, I didn't KILL them..." Pandora smirked a little bit. "They'll be okay~."
"I demand you tell me where you've taken them!" Pit yelled.
"Ugh, Pit, stop worrying so much. It's not good for one's complexion." Pandora rolled her eyes. "But if you MUST know, I've sent them to my Labyrinth of Deceit."
"What?! The Labyrinth of Deceit?!"
"I'm certain they'll have a wonderful time. Well, I must go now. Can't keep my two lovely guests waiting now, can I?" Pandora winked before she teleported away and the Underworld monsters just faded away, like they were illusions.
"Oh no...!" Pit remembered his time in the Labyrinth of Deceit and remembered it was NOT fun for him. "Lady Palutena, we've got trouble!" He called out.
Crimson and Eva screamed for a while before Crimson managed to compose herself and land on her feet, and then caught Eva in her arms.
"You good, Eva?" Crimson asked.
"I'm fine..." Eva said, shaking her head. "I'm just a little bit shaken…where ARE we?"
The girls looked around their area. The place they were in seemed to be...different. Everything was out of sorts and didn't exactly make sense. Crimson put Eva down and dusted her hands off.
"...Oh crap. I think I know where we are." Eva suddenly said after recognizing their surroundings.
"Welcome to my Labyrinth of Deceit." Pandora's voice echoed through the place. "I do hope you enjoy your time here~."
"Pandora! Where are you?!" Crimson got ready for anything that might come their way.
"If I show myself, it wouldn't be fun." Pandora winked - though they couldn't see it. "Ground rules are, ladies~! See if you can beat my beautiful Labyrinth of Deceit~! If you win? I'll reward you with freedom~."
Crimson and Eva looked at each other both concerned on what to do.
"...Guess we don't have a choice." Crimson mumbled and Eva nodded her head. "Alright, Pandora. We'll play your little game." Crimson told her.
The deity applauded happily, a sneer coming from her.
"Splendid~! If that's what you decide, then may the games begin! I haven't said that in so long~."
"I can't imagine why..." Crimson mumbled sarcastically. Then the Angel became determined. "Alright. Let's do this! Forward!" Crimson charged straight forward, only to run into an invisible wall she didn't know was there, and didn't see.
"Careful!" Eva said, but a little too late. "She has a lot of false hallways too! Be on the lookout for those!"
"Yeah...I gotcha..." Crimson groaned as she picked herself up off the ground, hearing Pandora's giggling.
"...And that's what happened!" Pit explained the whole situation to Palutena, Leslie, and Ang.
"If they're in Pandora's Labyrinth, we have to hurry. Who knows what could happen." Leslie stated.
Ang hugged herself and felt her stomach sink. Her sister was in Pandora's Labyrinth? All alone with Pandora...? "I...see..." She said, feeling the sickness become a bit worse.
Leslie put her hand on Ang's shoulder to comfort.
"Crimson will protect Eva. Don't worry." Leslie said, with an assuring smile.
Pit went over to her and placed his hand on her other shoulder.
"I won't let anything happen to her or Crimson, okay?" He whispered gently. "I promise this to you."
Ang smiled at both Leslie and Pit. She nodded her head, determined.
"We have one problem, though." Palutena said, sad to break up the moment. "The Labyrinth is moving."
"It's moving?" Leslie repeated, confused.
She pointed into the distance out the window, a dark cloud moving in the distance.
"Look. Pandora's Labyrinth isn't stagnant most of the time: it travels from one place to another. Including the entrances that lead to it."
"Then what's the plan?" Pit asked. "We can't just stand here!"
Palutena began to think before she snapped her fingers. A plan coming into her head.
"That's it! Eris can help!" She stated.
"Eris?" Everyone asked, confused, not knowing who Palutena was talking about.
Palutena began to explain. "Eris is the Goddess of Chaos, Strife, and Discord. She and Pandora go way back. Though they're not always on good terms with each other. They're more like rivals than anything."
"Pandora, the Goddess of Calamity...Eris, the Goddess of Chaos..." Ang sighed through her nose. "What is it with all these connections...?"
"Will Eris be willing to help us?" Leslie asked, not sure about it.
"If it has something to do with beating Pandora at something, oh definitely." Palutena smiled.
"Well, what are we waiting for?" Pit asked, grateful to see they were getting somewhere.
"Alright...Here goes nothing." Palutena closed her eyes and then said, "I beseech the audience of Eris! Goddess of Chaos, Strife, and Discord!" Suddenly, a magic circle appeared on the ground between the girls and Pit and Palutena. Everyone backed away as a woman appeared in the center of the circle. She had long black hair in a high ponytail and violet eyes. She had light makeup and wore a strapless leotard underneath a purple sash and skirt. She wore no shoes and had large black wings.
The girls and Pit stood back a bit when the woman stretched out her wings and looked at the trio.
"Um...Hi...?" Pit said with a small wave.
"Oh my gosh! You guys are the cutest!" The woman said as she walked up to Pit and the girls and started looking at them while playing with their hair like a doting aunt of some kind. "I didn't know you collect humans, Palutena!"
"I don't, Eris. And stop please, you're making Pit feel uncomfortable." Palutena pointed out, seeing Pit's face all red.
The woman, apparently Eris, gasped surprised. "Wait! This is Pit?! Oh my gods! Look at you! You've gotten so big since I last saw you!"
"Wait, you know me?" Pit asked.
"Of course, Palutena and I go WAY back!" Eris smiled.
"Hello, Eris." Leslie smiled and stepped forward with Ang. "My name's Leslie."
"And I'm Angelique, but call me Ang." Ang frowned. "We have a problem...our friends, one of which is my sister, got taken into Pandora's Labyrinth. And we're not sure where they are..."
When Eris heard Pandora's name, she glared and huffed. "Of course Pandora would pull an old stunt like that. And she IS old, but hey, I am too." Eris shrugged a little. "And you need to find an entrance to the Labyrinth?"
"Yes. I'm sorry to ask this of you if you're busy." Palutena said.
"Are you kidding? I've always got time to mess with Panny." Eris giggled at her nickname for Pandora.
"That's wonderful! Thank you!" Ang said.
"No problem. Now..." With a wave of her hand, Eris opened a small vortex to a pocket dimension and stuck her hand inside. "...I just need my...huh? What the...?" Eris then started pulling random stuff from the vortex and throwing it to the side.
"Uh...are you OK, Eris?" Leslie asked.
"Yeah, yeah. Totally fine. Just...looking...for...the thing...where is it...?!" She groaned as stuck her head inside the vortex she summoned.
"Uh, Lady Palutena...?" Pit looked at his goddess, confused and unsure now if Eris could really help them.
"Don't worry. Eris IS the Goddess of Chaos...but even before she got that title and power, her organizing skills have always been chaotic..." Palutena said awkwardly.
"Of course." Ang said sarcastically, her head in her hands.
"I hope it'll be alright..." Leslie said, rather concernedly.
"I-It's fine! Everything's fine—why is THIS in here?!" Eris asked suddenly, pulling out a voodoo doll before throwing it over her shoulder. "Come on…Come on...! Aha! Found it!" Eris took out a large golden apple while the vortex sucked back up everything Eris took out before disappearing.
"What is that?" Ang asked in amazement. She's never seen a golden apple, of all things.
"I'm more concerned about that voodoo doll..." Pit mumbled.
Eris smiled before tapping the apple and millions of what looked like virtual computer screens appeared above the golden fruit. Ang and Leslie were stunned in amazement.
"That seems so much better than Apple back home..." Leslie whispered to Ang.
"Agreed..." Ang mused. "Uhm, Eris? What is all of this...?"
"Live sights of various areas in the country. I could use this to see where the next entrance to the Labyrinth will show up. It'll take some time to crack the code down." Eris explained.
"Code?" Pit asked.
"I mean like find it's pattern. I like patterns in complex things." Eris admitted. "Even a Goddess has to have some kind of hobby."
Ang stepped forward and gazed at the different areas and possible entrances, narrowing her eyes in thought. "Do you know where the labyrinth first opened up?"
Eris turned to Pit and asked, "Do you know what town you were in when this happened?"
"Uh, yeah. It was a fishing town near here. Right on the bay." Pit answered.
"Right...on the...bay..." Eris moved a couple projections before finding the town.
Ang studied the area and the rest of the map before pulling out a sheet of paper writing it down. "I see..."
Leslie looked over her shoulder. "Ang, what are you doing?"
Eris smiled at Ang before looking back at the maps. "Hmm...it was around this area, Pit?" Eris asked.
Pit looked at the map too. "Uh...Yeah, around an area with a massive fountain."
"It's over here." Ang said with no hesitation, pointing to the right of the map.
Leslie nearly choked. "W-Wh...Ang, how?!"
"She's right!" Eris said as she zoomed in on the spot that Ang pointed to. "It won't stay there for long though. You have about five minutes to get there before it goes to a different spot."
"Let's go then!" Pit said as he grabbed Ang's hand and they dashed off.
Leslie was confused but shrugged and grabbed her medallion. "Let's go! Celestial Evolution!" And thus changed into Angel Azure and asked Palutena to teleport her to the location to meet Pit and Ang there.
"I'll go too." Eris said as she stepped next to Azure. "It has been a while since I've seen Panny~." Eris smirked, and Azure giggled at the nickname Eris said.
"Alright then. Eris, if anything happens, can you get them out of there?" Palutena asked.
"No problem, leave it to me." Eris assured her before Palutena sent them off.
Meanwhile, Crimson and Eva were NOT having the best time in the labyrinth. Of course there were monsters to slow them down, but Crimson took care of them easily. The hard part was finding which room was which, finding the hidden floors to walk across, and not falling off the edge into an abyss. Crimson was having the most trouble. Eva was handling better than the Angel was.
Crimson stopped and sat down on the floor to catch her breath. "What...the...actual...hell...?" Crimson said in between breaths as she leaned her head back against the wall.
"Crimson?" Eva called out as she was stuck in a room with multiple mirrors, as if she was in a carnival, "Are you here? Are you anywhere?"
Crimson opened her eyes and looked up to Eva standing on the ceiling...or was she on the ceiling and Eva was on the actual floor?
"...Dammit, Pandora!" Crimson yelled.
"You called~?" Pandora's mocking voice echoed through the room.
Crimson spoke as she got back on her feet. "This game is getting annoying! What are you after?!"
Pandora gasped, as if she had been mocked.
"You think I'm after bad intentions? I feel insulted...!"
"...How stupid do you think we are?" Crimson asked, seriously wondering if Pandora thought she could pull one over on her and Eva.
"Yeah! There's no way you trapped us in here for just the shits and giggles—Ah!" As Eva said that, she leaned against a mirror that turned out to be a trap door and she slid down a slide that led her through another hidden door where Crimson was now.
They butted noses and yelped in pain, gazing at each other with bewildered faces.
"...Hey, Crimson."
"Hey, Eva."
"...That hurt."
Crimson paused before she just sighed and patted Eva on the head.
Pandora couldn't help but laugh a little. "Aren't you two sweet?"
Crimson growled. "Enough games, Pandora!" Crimson pushed Eva behind her as Pandora giggled again.
Eva spoke up bravely. "What are you after?! We're done with your games!
"Oh well...if you want to know THAT badly." Pandora said she snapped her fingers, the sound echoing in the air. The ground underneath only Crimson turned into a vortex and she fell through. She screamed in surprise.
"Crimson!" Eva called out and tried to reach for her but it was too late. Crimson was gone and the vortex closed.
Suddenly the room changed into a battle arena with Eva all alone in the center. Pandora teleported into the room and smirked wickedly at Eva.
"What did you do to her...?" Eva nearly screamed, though she couldn't get a word out as her eyes were wide in horror.
"I didn't do anything...yet." She giggled. "I just sent her somewhere else. To a place that's none of YOUR business~."
Pandora summoned her long blue sword. "Now that little Crimson is with Lord Hades, I'll just finish you off myself!" Pandora readied her sword before charging in for the kill. Eva screamed as she covered her head and closed her eyes, bracing for whatever was about to come. But she heard weapons clash together. She peeked one eye open before gasping at the sight of a black-winged angel standing before her, blocking Pandora with a silver bow weapon.
"?! You!" Pandora gasped.
"Long time no see, Pandora!" Dark Pit smirked before pushing the goddess back and firing a charged shot the minute she landed. Pandora dodged the attack and glared at Dark Pit.
Eva stared in disbelief - this was Pit, right...? Or...
"! Dark Pit...!" Eva gasped in excitement once she realized exactly who this was.
Dark Pit turned back to look at Eva. "Are you alright?" He quickly asked, however Eva didn't have time to answer the angel. Dark Pit suddenly picked Eva up and threw her over his shoulder to avoid blue fireballs from Pandora.
"Hey!" Eva said as was thrown over his shoulder suddenly.
"I didn't think of YOU as a party-crasher, Dark Pit!" Pandora said as she continued attacking with blue fireballs.
"I'm just full of surprises." He grinned, then flipped over several ends of the labyrinth, which was cracking with every shot that was fired.
"I don't mean to be THAT girl..." Eva started out, "...but you DO have a plan of getting out here, right?!"
"Yeah—I'm just waiting on Viridi." Dark Pit replied, however he stopped in his tracks as metal bars rose up from the ground to prevent Dark Pit from going any further.
"Oh come on!" Dark Pit cried out as he set Eva down, finally.
"Looks like it's the end of the road." Dark Pit and Eva looked to see Pandora walking towards them. Dark Pit, with a battle cry, charged at Pandora. Pandora did the same as their weapons clashed. Eva watched the battle intently before something on the floor caught her eye. She looked to see some kind of dark blue cube with orange and neon green lines and circles on it.
"What's this...?" Eva asked out loud. Although, Dark Pit and Pandora were too busy fighting to pay attention. Eva grabbed the cube and pulled it out of the floor. She gazed at the cube for a few moments before gasping in excitement as Pandora and Dark Pit were still battling.
"...Oh, I LOVE these!" Eva grinned, getting on the ground and instantly switching the patterns of the cube, the labyrinth now shapeshifting heavily until it started to disappear.
Dark Pit and Pandora stopped fighting as the entire labyrinth was shaking.
"What's happening?!" Dark Pit exclaimed.
"A Cosmic Cube is being changed!" Pandora said before spotting Eva playing with the cube she picked up. "You brat! Are you stupid?! Stop playing with that Cosmic Cube!"
"Huh?" Eva looked up to Pandora only to have the cube snatched out of her hands by someone else. Eva looked up to see who it was.
"Seriously, Panny, you can't even get a little one like her to not touch your things?" Eris said as she fixed the Cosmic Cube and got the labyrinth back to normal.
"?! Eris?!" Pandora was shocked to see Eris here.
"Who?" Dark Pit asked, confused. That's when Pit came flying into the scene, carrying Ang. Angel Azure was jumping around the area before she finally landed next to Eva.
Pit landed down and let Ang go before noticed Dark Pit. "Oh! Hey, Pittoo!" He smiled and waved.
"Don't call me that." He huffed, looking to the side before focusing on Pandora.
"Eva!" Ang ran over to her sister and hugged her tightly. "Oh, thank the Gods!"
Eva hugged Ang back. Azure smiled at the tender sister moment before turning her attention back to Pandora. She stood next to Eris who pulled out her own weapon, a golden staff with a hook on the end.
"It's been a long time, Panny. How've you been~?" Eris asked in a sweet way.
"Peachy." She responded blandly before readying her weapon. "I see you're still as chipper as ever, Eris."
Eris readied her weapon as well. "It keeps me looking young, which is more than I can say for you." Eris teased. Azure covered her mouth, holding in her laughter.
Pandora growled. "You think you're so funny?!" The Goddess of Calamity jumped and slashed her sword down at Eris, who blocked the attack with her staff. Azure shook off the laughter before joining in the fight and kicking Pandora in the stomach.
"Not bad, Azure!" Eris complimented as she pushed Pandora back.
"I try!" She grinned as she roundhouse kicked Pandora as she came flying towards her. Pandora hit the wall harshly, groaning in distaste.
"Why you...!"
"Pittoo! Give me a hand!"
"I'm on it!" Pandora quickly looked to see Pit and Dark Pit readying their weapons and fired massive charged shots at Pandora. The shots hit their targets and Pandora fell to the ground on her hands and knees. Pit and Dark Pit gave each other a fist bump.
Pandora growled a little as she glared at the group do-gooders, but then chuckled, "Whatever. Defeating me won't matter. Lord Hades got what he wanted."
"What are you talking about?" Eris asked.
Pandora pointed at Eva. "Ask that one. She knows what happened to Little Crimson. Bye~." Pandora blew a kiss to no one in particular and teleported.
Azure wasn't sure what to make of that but then realized something. "Wait, Crimson?" She asked before hurrying over to Eva. "Eva. What happened? Do you know where Crimson is?"
Eva looked down at her hands before she shook. "...They got her..."
"What?" Everyone gasped in shock as Eva started crying, hugging Ang tightly.
"T-They got Crimson...! I-I don't know what to do...!"
"I'm sorry, but who's Crimson?" Dark Pit asked, a bit confused.
"Let's get back to Palutena's temple first. This labyrinth feels creepy without Pandora in it, to be honest." Eris said before she used her powers to teleport everyone out and back to Skyworld.
"...And that's what happened before Dark Pit showed up." Eva finished telling her story. Ang made a cup of tea for her sister as everyone sat at the table inside and listened.
"Dammit." Dark Pit cursed. "If I had gotten there a little sooner..."
"It's not your fault, Pittoo." Pit said, putting a hand on Dark Pit's shoulder.
"He's right. Let's focus on rescuing this Crimson girl now." Everyone looked to see someone else entering the room. The Goddess of Nature herself.
"Viridi!" Dark Pit exclaimed.
"When you didn't meet up with me at the rendezvous point in the labyrinth, I got a little worried. But then Palutena called and told me you were here. She filled me in on what she could." Viridi said. "I mean I knew Hades was back but...I still can't believe it." She looked at Leslie, Ang, and Eva. "Are these the girls?" Viridi asked Palutena.
"Yes, minus one. Akria, who is Angel Crimson." Palutena answered.
"Yeah, that's us." Leslie said as she sipped her tea. "We didn't expect for things to go awry."
"Well, this is Pandora." Viridi said simply. "She's always like this. It's her element after all..."
Eva couldn't find it in herself to sip any tea her sister made. She was still shaking so badly.
"...If I'd only gotten sucked in instead..." Eva whispered.
Ang heard what Eva said and looked at her sister in shock before grabbing her hand. "Don't say that, Eva! Please don't..."
Eva looked at her sister and nodded her head, but still felt terrible.
"Here's my question: why does Hades want this Akria girl anyway?" Eris asked.
"I'm not sure. But I know we're not going to sit around to find out." Palutena said she stood up. She looked at Viridi and asked, "Viridi, may I ask for you and the Forces of Nature's assistance in rescuing Akria?"
"You can count on it." Viridi said as she nodded her head.
"I'd love to help, but I think I need to look into something." Eris stated. "But if you need help with anything else in the future, let me know."
"Thank you, Eris." Palutena said with a bow before Eris teleported away.
"Are you ready to go?" Palutena asked, standing up with her staff. "The sooner we rescue her, the better."
Ang nodded, standing up determinedly while helping her sister up. "Of course! No time to lose!"
Pit was shocked to see Ang running ahead. "A-Ang where are you going?"
Ang looked towards him with a determined glint - a glint that had him rather afraid. "Someone has to lead the way!"
"But we need a plan, Ang!" Pit said, a little afraid. "We can't just barge in. Please, Ang. Let's plan first, and then you can lead the way. OK?" Pit gently took her hands and Ang calmed down.
"Alright..." Ang reprised before Pit led her back to the room. But as he did, Pit couldn't help but wonder...
Is she becoming an Angel too?
Akria stirred awake before reaching for her forehead. She sat up and opened her eyes before realizing she wasn't in the Labyrinth of Deceit anymore. Or Skyworld for that matter. She was in a small bedroom with simple decor and coloring, and the bed she woke up in was for a single person. Akria then saw she was back in her normal clothes before she got up off the bed and looked out the window in the room to see a red-colored barren wasteland.
"Where am I...?" She asked. That's when the door to the room opened. Akria turned around and gasped when she saw Nyx.
"I see you're awake." She stated.
"Nyx!" Akria reached for her medallion but didn't find it. She began to panic
"Looking for this?" Akria looked to see Nyx holding her medallion.
"You...!" Akria growled, glaring at Nyx. "Give me that back!"
Nyx sighed as she played with the ends of the medallion. "I believe I can't do that, Miss. Besides, it's too pretty." She smirked a little. "Plus, it gives us more time to chat."
Akria glared at Nyx. The Goddess sighed before opening the door wider.
"Although, it seems we can't at the moment. Come." Nyx ordered.
"What?"
"Lord Hades would like a word with you." Nyx said, making Akria's eyes widened.
"Ha-Hades?" Akria stammered.
"Yes. And if you come with me willingly, no tricks, I will give back your medallion when we enter the throne room." Nyx said.
Akria didn't know if she should trust Nyx's word or not, but right now, she was powerless against a Goddess. She couldn't do anything. "…Alright." Akria simply said as she walked out of the room with Nyx.
The two of them walked to the throne room which was farther than Akria thought it would be. When they reached the large set of doors, Nyx opened them easily with one hand. Akria and Nyx walked in but Akria froze the moment she saw Hades there, sitting on his throne. Nyx grabbed Akria's arm to pull her along further into the room just as the doors closed behind them on their own.
"Here she is, my lord." Nyx practically pushed Akria forward, and she grunted.
"I'm not a rag doll! I'm 14, not a little kid!" Akria snapped at Nyx.
"14?" Hades suddenly asked with a raised eyebrow. "And here I thought you were at least 12."
Akria looked at Hades, a bit insulted. "You shut your mouth!"
Hades smirked at Akria before turning his attention to Nyx. "That'll be all, Nyx. You're excused." He said. Nyx bowed and handed Akria back the medallion, which surprised the young girl. She then took her leave and left the throne room.
Now Akria was all alone in the room with Hades. She quickly turned back around in time to see Hades getting up from his throne. Akria was prepared to transform whenever she got the chance.
"What do you want, Hades?" Akria demanded, already in a battle stance.
"Such a battle spirit. It's no wonder you took down Thanatos so easily." Hades commented as he walked towards Akria. Akria backed up a little as Hades got closer. "Such a forceful soul you must have." He smirked.
"What do you want?!" Akria demanded again, trying not to be so nervous that she could transform.
"Calm yourself, little one." Hades told Akria. "Your true name is Akria, correct?"
"…Yes, it is."
"Well then, Aki, I'll get straight to the point since you don't want to chat." Hades said. "I want you to join the Underworld Army."
Akria was shocked to hear Hades say that. But the look of shock was replaced by a glare as she said, "You can forget it, Hades!" She then took her medallion and raised it above her head.
"Let's go! Celestial Evolution!"
