Ch.6: Escape!
That night, as with any friendship reunion, an event took place. One full of snacks and jokes, of games and teasing. That of course, was a sleepover.
It was not planned. What had happened was everyone wanting to spend more time with Sunset and I, and that morphed.
As the clock struck nine that night, I found myself setting on Sunset's bed Indian style. We were all engaged, laughing at an angry grandpa destroying his kitchen because he could not find his candy.
As Rainbow Dash chuckled, sitting on the floor, she turned to Twilight on her right. Rainbow frowned and gestured Sunset to pause the video. Immediately, the girls huddled around Twilight.
Twilight was looking off distantly, as if she were in a desert. She had her knees up to her belly. Her eyes were unblinking, and she was unsmiling. Twilight took a deep breath.
"Twilight? What's wrong?" Rarity asked.
Twilight mumbled out an answer.
"Umm...Twilight? We can't hear you" Pinkie noted.
Twilight looked over at her. Then took another deep breath. "Friends, when me, Sunset and David were at the mall today, I looked in my mirror at one point."
"I-I saw Midnight Sparkle"
The girls all gasped. Rainbow and Applejack stood, cracking their knuckles. Sunset put her arm around Twilight. "Did Midnight do anything? Say anything at all?"
Twilight shook her head. "Just waved. Then disappeared."
I had gotten up by that point and went to the scene, squatting down.
"Twilight, do you think its because the statue is breaking? That she appeared like that?"
Twilight nodded. Applejack huffed. "Let's go fix it with glue or something!"
Sunset shook her head. "I tried before I went to Equestria. The statue literally threw the glue back on me"
Twilight stood up with Fluttershy's support. "I... I bet it was my imagination. Yes! I was just seeing things."
She sighed. "But after six years. I know she is still there. I'm scared."
I raised a hand. "Can we see the mirror? I am curious. Creatures who fear things sometimes see things that are not there"
Twilight gave a small smile. "That's a great idea." She said pulling the mirror out of her purse. She promptly froze.
After a few seconds, we quietly gathered around her. There in the mirror was Midnight Sparkle.
"Hello" she greeted with a grin. "It's time" she stated before disappearing.
We were all in a daze after that event. We tried to get back to the video watching, but to be frank, scared was an understatement for all of us.
We ended up deciding to have an early night. Sunset and I stared at each other as we laid on her bed.
"Sunset" I said. "Do you think Midnight could overpower Celestia?"
Sunset averted my gaze, which told me all I needed to know.
I took her right hand. "Sunset, in my faith, it is said that one of the greatest things you can ever do is lay down your life for your friends. If Midnight tries to hurt, you or our friends... she will face me.
Sunset gave a light chuckle. "And that's why I love you, David" she said, stroking my cheek. We fell asleep, a cautious optimism in all of us.
But at that statue...
Midnight Sparkle was reborn.
