My Equestrian Archives- Breaking Dawn Ch.9

Ch.9: Motivations

Sound of silence. When something so unbelievable, so shocking occurs, those that witness it can only stare at what they saw. For the eight of us, that was Midnight Sparkle.

The silence followed for a few seconds. Fluttershy's hands shook. Rainbow and Applejack had their fists clenched, glaring at the entity. Twilight stared in fear, no doubts bad nightmares flooding through her.

We could not always stare though. Rarity held a hand up, taking a deep breath.

"Okay" she said. "If you are going to destroy us, get it over with"

Midnight smiled, and to my surprise, a giggle escaped her lips. "Destroy? Why would I wish to destroy my denizens?"

Twilight was confused. "But... all those dreams I had of you..."

"Were fears and assumptions" Midnight smirked, as she turned to Rainbow and Applejack. "There is a problem with what you imply. Since the statue is breaking, my power has increased. You could try to fight me, but it would not end well."

"Wait a second" Sunset said. "Did you cause the statue to break like it is?"

Midnight shook her head. "It was always meant to at some point. I don't know if your trips back and forth helped."

Midnight then smiled. "Congrats to you and David. I like to see my denizens happy."

As she said this, Midnight stepped forward. "Are you sure he's just for you? I'm sure I could add to the Equation. Think of it: Me as ruler, and you and David as my advisors."

"That's enough!" Rainbow shouted. "Sunset will just turn into Daylight Shimmer and defeat you!"

"If I may" I interjected. "Midnight Sparkle, did you come to try and recruit us?"

Midnight shook her head, looking at the floor. "No. I actually knew you guys were making this breakfast, and I wanted to see if I could join."

We all stared in silence. Rainbow began to laugh, falling to the floor. I turned to Sunset. "It's your apartment, after all. Your call"

Sunset gulped. It was true that she could try and beat Midnight again, but if what she said about the magic was true...

Sunset took a nervous breath. "Okay. We'll set a ninth place."

To say the first few minutes was awkward was an understatement. No one spoke. No one knew what to say, really. I broke that silence after taking a drink of orange juice.

"Why do you want to rule, Midnight?"

Midnight gave me a thoughtful look, before answering. "In life, if you keep the same cycles going, nothing can become better. The top gets used to their power. This is not me saying Celestia and Luna, or Cadence and Twilight have done bad. I do not believe that. But I think I can do better."

We all nodded. "But why Pandestria too?" Rarity inquired.

Midnight smirked. "Fairness. Such a powerful force as magic and Pandestria doesn't have a chance to use it? For the record, why is that statue there anyway?"

Twilight was confused. "I have no idea"

Rainbow was taken aback. "You actually don't know something?"

Ignoring that jab, Pinkie asked the next question. "What about friendship? Wouldn't that be more special than power?"

Midnight laughed. I am not sure if anyone else caught it, but I did. It was a sad laugh. Even worse, it was real.

"Who would want to be friends with a demonic entity?" she lamented.

With that, she stood, her plate empty. "I will be at the school. If any of you want to try and stop me... or even align, I will be waiting."

Rarity went to stay something but stopped. Midnight gave a sad wave and walked out the door, closing it behind her.

It was in those moments that I knew. Much like Discord and Starlight Glimmer and the others. Even my Sunset...

Midnight could be redeemed.

Ten minutes later, Midnight stood by the statue. Tears filled her eyes as she sighed. This was for the best. Equestria and Pandestria needed her guidance. It needed fairness.

With that resolution in mind, her eyes glowed and she snapped her fingers.

In seconds, the once proud symbol of Canterlot High was in ashes.

The statue was no more.
