A/N: In recognition of the fact that this story has 500 views and 0 reviews I have decided to make this chapter 5000 words. Because 500 plus an additional 0 at the end is 5000. Thank you for your continued readership despite the low quality of the product I have delivered. (it's not 5000 words.)
It did in fact take us two days to get back to Konoha. We camped, barely slept and left at dawn. Despite no further hostile encounters, it was a harrowing run. Through rugged terrain in the trees. I was almost forced to stop working so hard to look like I was expending little to no effort to keep up. Almost.
When we got back to Konoha, we were debriefed and our mission was reclassified as S-rank due to the amount of ninja threats we encountered on site, and handily neutralized. More scouts were sent out with the knowledge that the bandits and ninja killed were part of a larger organization. After our debriefing was over, Anzu had demanded to speak to the Hokage, a day passed and now here we were, in the Hokage's office. With a few others in tow, first were the two facing us by the Hokages paper-covered desk. Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage and Shikaku Nara Commander of the Jonin. Ryuko stood on my left as a witness of my chakra nature affinities and usage. Anzu stood behind me, resting her crossed arms on top of my head as she was now considered my handler, the person who kept me on a leash and watched over me or something of that nature. Narumi was standing with her arms crossed and expression stern on my right. While Hinata Hyuuga was beside her wearing an expression that was Narumi's polar opposite.
Ryuko has a Sharingan, so when it came down to it, she is a credible witness and according to her she apparently had the capacity to see my chakra nature, at least when the jutsu of my 'chakra' release was being charged or when it was cast.
Hinata was simply here because the head of the Hyuga household Hiashi was indisposed with more important matters. Hinata was the next best thing as the eldest daughter of the Hyuga clan. It was simply a matter of determining the chakra nature affinity of a person who had claimed they had no chakra nature affinity. So there was no point in being overly clandestine. Thus Hinata Hyuga was here. Wowee, one of the Konoha 11 in the flesh… besides Naruto.
Narumi was really only here because she refused orders to stand by and wait outside, and I honestly didn't blame her.
I looked back towards the Hokage who peered at us from beneath the rim of his fancy white hokage hat with one eye closed. "Hinata." He started, breaking what had been a momentary silence as the din of all of us filing into the office died down.
"Y-yes!? Hokage-sama!" She jumped and stood straight at attention. This stiffness earned a soft chuckle from Hiruzen Sarutobi. Like some kind of an amused grandfather.
"You are capable of detecting chakra affinities utilizing the Byakugan correct? This one is troubling us, and believes they don't have a chakra nature affinity and one of my best Jonin is claiming that they have Natural Energy inside of them." Hiruzen explained, gesturing at me when he said this one.
"Yes. Hokage-sama." Hinata's demeanor seemed serious now. She stepped forward and stood to face me directly. She looked at me with an air of intensity that hadn't been there moments before. "Byakugan!"
Honestly, the feeling of being looked at directly by a Byakugan was not only nerve-wracking but I felt naked, like she shouldn't be looking directly at my chakra. I fidgeted, and Anzu chopped me on the top of the head.
"It's difficult to tell… because I've never seen anything like it before, but I think it's.. Fire, Lightning… and wind. All mixed together. Like that's the most natural state for it."
"Hmm… so it is a Kekkei Tota. Who did you say his parents were?"
"They were grass ninja, but their names aren't in any of our records." Said Shikaku Nara, the Jonin Commander, he stood off to the side facing us from around the Hokage's desk. The Nara clan was well-informed and had a lot of secrets. Since Shikaku was the Jonin Commander, it was more than likely he already knew everything about my upbringing and why I was actually here as a ninja or whatever. I didn't ask. I doubted I'd get answers.
"So not even the Hokage knows the name of my parents." Was what I said instead. Damn. In all the time I was alive my parents never called each other by name just: "Honey; My Love; or Dear."
"No, by the time you were taken in by the Leaf, your parents had already perished." Anzu stated bluntly and ruffled my hair, like that would take the blow and morbidity out of the way she said my parents were dead and she was just there to pick me up. And why was she treating me like a child? She was the idiot who suggested that I had natural energy for chakra. Then again, I was also dumb for assuming the jutsu I used had no chakra nature type, and dumb for believing that's what it was. But hey. If it wasn't 'just' chakra then what the hell would I call it? It's not like I knew what Fire, Lightning and Wind chakra felt like when it was by itself.
"Hmm. Keep this on the down low for now, but continue as normal. Dismissed." The Hokage waved his hand for us to scram like the little ninja we were. As he got to work on his schemes and busy schedule, mostly the busy schedule, probably.
We all left. Everyone but Shikaku, the right hand of the Hokage. Must've had something else more important to talk to than
"Well… I think that went well." Anzu said, rubbing the back of her head as she let out a sigh.
"Really though, Natural Energy?"
"Okay, like you were any better No Chakra Nature-San."
Me and Anzu bickered a bit as we left the building with Narumi and Ryuko following behind us. "So what now?" I asked her when we calmed down.
I saw her looking at the sky, and followed her gaze. It was a messenger hawk, creating a specific pattern in the sky. Cyphers weren't really my thing and this one was beyond my abilities.
"Now… you all get some down time, while I gotta go."
"Stay safe." I said, without thinking.
She looked at me, the expressionless mask didn't say much. "Aww… is my little munchkin scared for his sensei's safety? Don't worry. I'll be back home soon." She patted my head condescendingly.
Damn it.
"Sorry." She apologized out of nowhere, and then seemingly flickered out of existence. She was off, doing her Jonin things.
I was left with the girls. Narumi smiled, "Well. I gotta check in with my brother, you two have fun." She said and ran off at an instant full sprint.
I turned my gaze to Ryuko, "Got any place you need to be?"
"Mm… training if anything. Maybe sleep." She said, she looked tired, obviously so. I was surprised she stuck around so long.
"Want to get something to eat first?" I asked her, she looked about ready to refuse, "I hear your performance improves with proper rest and a satisfied stomach."
She sighed, and offered a slight smile. "As long as we get barbecue from the barbecue place instead of ramen."
I nodded, "Sounds good. I don't know how those twins are so capable of eating ramen all the time."
"Right?" She rolled her dark grey eyes and we started walking to the barbecue place.
The walk was quiet, I could almost feel Ryuko's desire to say something. She never get the chance to initiate a conversation though.
"Anything on your mind?" I asked her, nonchalantly.
"Mm." She answered affirmatively.
"Wanna talk about it?" I asked.
"Mm…" She nodded, "Why did it take so long to figure our you have a Kekkei Tota?" She wondered.
"Well, we didn't really use elements in school, just our chakra. Plus I only ever focused on Taijutsu." I answered with a shrug. Don't ask me, I only figured out I have three natures thanks to your Sharingan and Hinata's Byakugan.
"But what about the clones… and the replacement." Ryuko asked, she looked at me with doubt.
"I just used my chakra as I know how… apparently not elementless, but rather with three natural elements." I shrugged and answered honestly, I mean sure. Using chakra was pretty easy and I passed everything with a perfect 50% and dragged my initial perfect clone score down with each consecutive attempt. Forcing them to believe it was just a fluke.
I sighed deeply, loathing the misfortune of having a kekkei tota for no reason and then let it go as we happened upon the barbecue place and stepped inside. Shikamaru, Ino and Choji were all inside, looked like Asuma had some other business to attend to at the moment. Choji was gorging, nothing new there. There were other patrons, but it was like nobody else was here with how loud Choji was. He was laughing loudly when me and Ryuko walked in, and Ino's bored and somewhat grumpy expression told a tale of how bored she was when she saw Ryuko and waved her over. Ah, that reminds me of how hard of a crush she has on Sasuke and the fact that Ryuko is his twin sister who could probably help her understand Sasuke better was probably one of a few reasons among why she would waved us over.
Ryuko turned to me and rolled her eyes but then smiled and turned to Ino. Then we walked over. I was glad she felt comfortable enough with me to show this impatient side of her, but that was probably just because we'd killed people together and she beat me in a fight… although I was tired and had to fight two at once and I was trying to keep my level of effort below 50% of my total capabilities… a loss was a loss.
I sat down next to Shikamaru while Ryuko sat down next to Ino.
"So." Ino leaned in, "How was your first mission?" She was all smiles.
"We cleared out a bandit camp, killed at least 23 of them." I said bluntly.
The table went silent. Saved for Choji's chewing.
"Yes. It was quite a fun mission, though Narumi didn't enjoy it as much as I did… and Kurokusa looked like he was just doing his job." Ryuko said with a smirk.
"Anyway. How have the past few days treated the Ino-Shika-Cho trio?" I changed the subject, Ryuko was generally offputting because of her changed nature, thanks to the events that lead to the slaughter of her tribe.
Shikamaru was wearing an expression that said: How troublesome.
Ino looked kind of shocked, "Wait wouldn't that make your first ever mission an S-rank or something? What happened?" She asked after a moment of hesitation, leaning in to at least act interested instead of intimidated by Ryuko.
So Ryuko earnestly told her what happened, the whole story. Even the parts about how they had to drag me along in a sleeping bag because I passed out showing our sensei my strongest Jutsu. Apparently I drooled, but I refused to believe that.
When she got to the part about me killing Jonin level opponents, the two of them looked at me with surprise, but Shikamaru seemed to take this information in stride. Like he'd already known it.
"Eh?!" Choji exclaimed.
"You mean, the bottom of the class killed Jonin before the rest of us? How the… How does that even work?" Ino asked, skeptical. Wouldn't blame her, couldn't. Wanted her to be skeptical.
I nodded slightly, and reached for a perfectly cooked piece of pork before Choji could grab it. Then I slowly pulled my mask below my chin and started eating. "I just got lucky." I said slowly.
"Weh~!?" Ino made some kind of surprised yelp, I have no idea.
Ryuko looked at me, her eyes widened slightly, then she looked away and started eating some pork.
"Ahem." She cleared her throat, "But how would he have killed them despite being a genin and going against Jonin level opponents."
"Like I said, I got lucky. They were probably overconfident and underestimated us as opponents…" I trailed off as I picked up another piece of pork and shoved it into my mouth. Beautiful, it was so flavorful and hot. I blew it in my mouth, it was almost too hot. "Phew. Too hot."
"You're too hot." Ino said exasperatedly, then realizing she said that out loud her face flushed a deep red.
Hmm…
"Thanks, same." I said with a smile.
Shikamaru looked amused at her misery.
Choji's eyes were squinted and he nodded slowly. "Something doesn't add up though, why did your sensei take you on such a dangerous first mission in the first place?"
"She's an Anbu, so who knows?" Ryuko said with a shrug then looked back at me. "But get this! Kuro-chan says he was actually aiming to get fifty percent in the academy so he didn't stand out and he actually has a Kekkei Tota." She leaned forward and whispered.
"Hmm? Well. That makes sense, he even hides fifty percent of his face with that mask too." Ino said with a shrug, "But what's a Kekkei Tota?"
Finallly. Somebody caught on.
"If the archives and books are anything to go off of, it's a step up from a Kekkei Genkei. But rather than two chakra natures, it uses three." He spoke up finally, peeking through one eye and meeting my eyes.
"Well. Since the cat is out of the bag, I might as well add that whenever I mould chakra, it just forms with three different natures at once. Wind, Fire and Lightning." I said and ate another piece of pork. My taste buds loved this, but Choji hated it.
"So what would you even call a triple natured release like that?" Ino asked.
"Well. I'm working on that, but so far it's just chakra release." I stated bluntly.
"Hmm…? We could probably help you think of a name for it." Ino offered.
Ryuko seemed unenthused as she wolfed down pieces of free pork while they were looking at me. Choji watched her though, he seemed to respect the amount of calories she ingested or something. "Speak for yourself Ino, I've got better things to do… like train and go bother my brother to spar with me." Ryuko said.
"Actually, Naruto, Kako and Sasuke left on a job to the Land of Waves not too long ago." Shikamaru stated, matter-of-factly. "So dad says." He added after a moment, shrugging.
Kako was probably his twin sister Shikako Nara.
"So that's Ryuko out but what about the rest of you?" Ino turned to Choji first.
"Well…" He leaned back apprehensively and turned to Shikamaru for a way out.
"Choji didn't your dad say he wanted you back home for training, let's go, I'll walk you." Shikamaru asked.
"Boys." Ino muttered, as the three of them: Ryuko, Choji and Shikamaru walked out the door, paying their bill and leaving.
"Sure you don't got something better to do?" I asked her with a smirk, "It's not like you have to try to help me come up with a name." I finished and got up from the table.
"Ok, first let me see how it works. Let's find a training ground." Ino slammed her palms on the table and rose to stop in front of me, blowing her bangs out her face, in an exercise of futility as they just flowed back to the same spot. She didn't seem to care though.
I wasn't given an opportunity to resist as she spun me around and pushed me out the door.
It didn't take us long to find an empty training ground, different one from last time, didn't know which one it was, but there was at least a hundred or so total. It was a grassy clearing with wooden targets hanging from trees on one side and training dummies on the other.
Ino's arms were crossed as she stood at a distance. I held my finger gun hand seals at my hips, pointing downwards, and moulded my chakra into the tips of my fingers, then rose them quickly, aiming in an instant and firing two shots off explosively at two different targets, striking directly in the middle. The magenta balls of energy looked like plasma bolts from an energy weapon or something. They struck the targets, bursting them into a thousand splinters scattered into the treeline, the scent of burning wood filled the air but there was no fire.
Ino approached and bumped her shoulder against mine. "That's actually pretty cool!" She exclaimed, "And it's purple too, just like your hair."
"Purple?" I looked at her with a raised eyebrow, "Excuse me, but it's magenta."
She looked confused for a moment, "Ah… right, magenta." She hmm'd as she turned back and was lost in thought for a moment. "Oh. I know a good name, wanna hear it?"
"Can't be any worse than Chakra release." I said, exasperated by how stupid it sounded.
"Since they're so bright and like the sun and stars, why don't you call it Starburst Release?" She asked wearing a big grin.
"Marry me." I said and then pointed one arm into the forest and didn't wait for a reply. "Starburst Release: Supernova!"
Almost immediately, my entire arm erupted into a blast of purple bursts of energy flying into the treeline. Wait, they looked stronger? Wow!
BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRT
Oh god, what I have done?
The entire treeline erupted into splints, fire and dirt. Everything was burning. I staggered backward with chakra fatigue and shock.
I then turned to the almost horrified expression of Ino and walked up to her and hugged her tighter than the last time I hugged my mother before I died. Come to think of it… this is the first time I hugged another human being for like thirteen years isn't it? "Thank you so much, Ino for helping me come up with this name." I murmured, I felt so elated, I don't know why but I wanted to jump for joy and just spit balls of starburst release in all directions.
She felt warm, and warmer… "Mmm! Ah! Yeah, no problem!" She slithered out of my grasp, like an elusive ocean eel. She slipped free with expertise. I could respect that. She was sharper than she made herself out to be, I'd have to watch out for her in the future, probably.
"Not to ruin the moment or anything, but you can use water ninjutsu right?" I asked haphazardly.
She looked at me in disbelief, then at the raging fire. "To… some extent."
I let out a sigh of relief and watched her try to extinguish the massive raging flames, she didn't have to try to control it for long though, as several flak-jacket-wearing chunin appeared from out of the woodwork and started extinguishing the fires with different variations of water release ninjutsu.
"Ah! There you are my cute little student, I've been looking everywhere for you, but I just decided to go to the sound of your release and the raging fire on the outskirts of the village!" I recognized the voice as Anzu, she was wearing her mask as usual, there was some aggravation in her voice.
"Hey sensei!" I exclaimed, I ignored her annoyance, too giddy with coming up with a name for my Kekkei Tota. "Ino came up with a name for what used to be Chakra Release! Starbust Release! Cool right?"
She dragged me by the ear, "AH! Ow ow ow ow! Sorry Ino, gotta go! Thanks again!"
"Just… let me know if you wanna spar!" She called back, and then we were gone in a flash.
"I WILLL!" I shouted, but I don't know if she heard me.
When we were alone Anzu smacked me on the back of the head. "Making your moves on all the village women, huh? Good for you, but I didn't raise you like that." She said bluntly, and chuckled. Probably at her own 'raising' joke, because she didn't raise me at all.
"Listen, Ino is a special exception… she feels like a kindred spirit, a fellow moray in the great blue." I murmured, emotioned erupting from my voice like it hadn't in years.
"...Uh huh…" She cast me a sideways glance, I could tell because she tilted her head. "Right, so anyway. The Hokage wants to see you?"
"Again?" I asked, making sure to roll my eyes.
"Yeah, says he wants to run some tests. Let's go." She said and dragged me along, we moved at a speed that seemed impossible, but she had massive biceps and I could feel her rippling chakra against my body.
The houses underfoot, not making a sound, then in almost no time at all, we were inside the Hokage's office. He almost jumped as we shot through the window and appeared in front of his desk, by that I mean he slowly opened his eye. "Kurokusa… wielder of a Kekkei Tota, despite being of no clan and having been orphaned by an incursion from 'rogue' hidden rock nin." He folded his hands on the table and leaned forward. "With your destructive capability on display in training field 32, and the happenstance with which one of the Legendary Sannin is present in Konoha. I've decided to have him run some tests." He explained, then the door popped open and in came a man totally lost in the sauce that was sake. He wore geta rather than ninja sandals and his feet clacked with each step he took. He wore a red haori with a yellow circle on each side and a green 'shirt-kimono' with matching as well as a clearly visible ninja mesh visible at the ankles, and wrists. He also wore bracers over his knuckles and his forehead-protector didn't have the leaf symbol, rather the kanji for Oil instead.
He struck a pose: "Ji-rai-ya! Is here! Wait… you said there'd be ladies Anzu! What the hell is the meaning of this?"
Hiruzen, the hokage explained the situation to him, and the man seemed to sober up instantly. "Work…" He sighed exaggeratedly, "Well she's cute anyway." He eyed me for a few moments.
"I'm a boy, and twelve." I said quickly.
"Ha ha ha!" He threw his head back, "Oh. Well come on kid, let's head to the lab."
I let out an exasperated sigh, he was my least favorite character.
"Come on, come the faster we get this over with, the faster I can get back to my… research." Jiraiya seemed to groan.
I just kept pace with the staggering old man, flanked by Anzu and Hiruzen, we were lead into the basement of the Administrative building, some sort of secret laboratory. It switched to a darker vibe, and everything was cold steel down here.
Eventually we came to a room with what looked like an operating table, a projector and examination tools. Well this escalated quickly. "I'd feel bad if you were a girl, but strip down to your underwear and lay on the table, put this on too." He said and handed me a patient gown.
I did as requested without much resistance, while Anzu and Hiruzen looked at me with I only managed to take off my tops before he grabbed my arm and twisted it slightly, to look at the birthmark I had on my arm, two black spots that looked like inverted tear drops.
"Hmm. Where did you get this?" He asked.
"I don't know, my caretaker called it a birthmark, so to me that's what it is." I replied, bluntly, shaking my arm free. He let go without resistance. I put on the patient gown and then stripped my pants off, wasn't wearing any socks. Somehow I wish I was, the floor felt cold. Anyway, I laid down on the table.
Then the lights came on and he started examining me, with some kind of jutsu. His interest was on the birthmark though, and I laid there for what felt like literal hours. I counted the tiles on the ceiling, then thought about how I'd repay Ino for helping me out with naming my Jutsu. From what I recalled, she lost her fight in the Chunin exams. Perhaps I could try to help her out with Taijutsu and Ninjutsu. Yeah, that felt like a fair trade off. I was surprised the Ino-shika-cho trio lasted so long, since the mind-body-transfer jutsu seemed dangerous and pretty useless all things considered. Then there was blackness for and undetermined amount of time.
"Alright! All done!" Jiraiya got up and left.
I was just left there, what the hell? I got up and got dressed. So I was at least dressed if anybody came back. Then the three of them came back in and blocked me from exiting the room.
"Everything alright?" I asked, they studied me for several moments.
It was Anzu that finally spoke up, "Do you know the name Orochimaru?"
Nope. Hell no. NOPE. HELL NO.
"No." I replied bluntly, pulling my mask back up and raising an eyebrow. "Should I?" It was a lie, but I was pretty good at telling those, I don't know about how good I was at telling them to-
I felt my back slam into the opposing wall as Anzu lifted me in the air by the throat. This felt good in its own way. "Harder." I squeezed out of my lungs, then she squeezed my airway until my lungs started to burn.
"Hmm…" She dropped me, and I gasped for air at her feet. I was starting to feel like I didn't like her feet.
So when I got up I slammed my fist directly into her mask without pulling any punches. She staggered back as it cracked in half and fell to the ground. Blood dripped from her forehead. It was only for an instant but she grinned. A psychotic grin, one I'd rather have not seen. Then it was gone in an instant, she stuck her tongue out and licked the blood dripping from her forehead.
Oh fuck.
"Well… I don't think you're lying. You'll continue to serve under Anzu as per usual." Hiruzen stated bluntly.
"Why did you even hit me, you said 'harder'." Anzu asked, she looked betrayed.
I did say that didn't I?
"Uhm… sorry. It was a heat of the moment thing, I thought I was gonna die for no reason, but I forgot to start running… not that I could've escape Ji-Rai-Ya or Sandaime-sama."
She scoffed, "But ow. Fuck. You hit pretty hard. I didn't even see that coming… anyway, just ask me to choke you again some time if you want." She said and wrapped her arm around my shoulders, and her tongue slipped out of her mouth, coming eerily close to my neck.
Snake! SNAKE! SNAKE TONGUE! AHHH!
I broke free and started running, after the Hokage and Jiraiya. Something on the inside me kept me from telling them what she did, or about that expression they didn't see. It wouldn't be until later that I actually learned what that something was, and what made me so special...
