Toko Babysits!

Toko sighed happily as she sat in her private study and booted up her laptop, clearing her mind of all distractions.

"Alright…I've finished grading papers, Hiro's out of the house, and I've got total peace and quiet! I can finally start writing a good novel again!" Toko giggled excitedly as she mused "I wonder what I should write fir…"

*Ring Ring*

Toko groaned in frustration as she slammed her hand on her cell phone and grumbled "Kami, why did I have to get a phone call now?!"

She wrapped her fingers around the device and picked it up. She grimaced as she picked it up and checked the Caller ID.

"…Might as well get this over with. The sooner I answer the phone, the sooner I can get back to writing…" With a heavy sigh, Toko answered the phone and held it up to her ear before she answered in an annoyed tone "What is it, Boss?"

"Toko, I told you, you guys don't have to call me boss." Toko could practically feel Makoto's uneasy smile through the phone as he continued "We're friends, and I've always treated you and the others as equals, so…"

"…What is it, Makoto?" Toko sighed in exasperation.

"Oh, ano…if you're too busy, I can just…"

"…You wouldn't have called if it wasn't important, so please just spit it out. What do you want?!"

"…Okay…" Makoto sighed as he admitted "Kyoko and I want to go see this movie on a date and we need a babysitter for Kiki…"

"Then go ask O…Omaru…or the idiot swimmer!"

"See…that's the thing…last time they watched Kiki, they got hyper competitive and she ended up with a bruise when she inadvertently became the rope in a tug of way."

"…You've gotta be kidding me…"

"…I'm afraid not…" Makoto sighed. "Kyoko and I agreed that we don't want either of them watching her right now, at least not until they tone down their Best Auntie competition. Byakuya's not exactly babysitter material, and between you and Hiro, you're the more responsible one, so…"

"…Fine." Toko sighed. "I guess I can cover this evening."

"Great, I'll tell, Kyoko. Just come by the house at five, okay? Thanks a lot, Toko!"

"Yeah, yeah, I get it. Goodbye, Makoto." With that, Makoto hung up, leaving Toko to sigh as she wondered "How do I let those Naegis drag me around like this?"

Toko closed her eyes and smiled, recalling her adventures with Komaru before and during the Final Killing Game.

"Heh, I guess it wasn't all bad. Hopefully this won't be either…well, better get writing while I still can."

With that, Toko opened up her word processing app and began typing in a flurry, determined to make as much progress on her novel as she could before she was inevitably pulled away on babysitting duty.

"Toko, come in!" Makoto greeted as he opened the door. He smiled apologetically at the sight of Toko grimacing before he continued "Sorry for dragging you away from your writing like this…"

"It's fine." Toko muttered as Makoto closed the door behind her. "I got a lot of my novel done anyway."

Makoto smiled proudly at his employee, thrilled to hear whenever one of them accomplished something outside of Hope's Peak Academy.

"Alright, if you'll just follow me, I'll take you to where Kyoko and Kiki are." Makoto offered, causing Toko to nod before she followed him.

"So, Kyoko and I would prefer if Kiki didn't have too much screen time while we're gone, but if it's absolutely necessary to placate her, you have our permission. She does however like it when people read to her, so there should be plenty of children's books in our room."

Toko nodded, absorbing the information as Makoto continued to instruct her on their preferred babysitting practices.

At least my talent can be somewhat useful here…even if I run out of actual books, I can use one of the more lighthearted ideas in my brain for some oral storytelling.

Toko's thoughts trailed off as they approached the couch. Makoto smiled warmly at the sight of his wife playing with their daughter. Toko's eyes widened in shock as she saw the formerly inexpressive woman making giggles and smiley faces at the girl, who happily giggled back.

Who are you and what have you done with Kyoko Kirigiri?! Toko exclaimed in her mind as Makoto reluctantly coughed into his fist to get his wife's attention.

"Hi, honey. Toko's here to babysit; are you ready to go?"

The blushing ex-detective gingerly stood up, cradling Kiki in her arms as she muttered "Yes, quite. Thank you for coming, Toko."

"It's fine, just hand me the…the baby…" Toko replied awkwardly before Kyoko reluctantly handed her daughter to the literature teacher.

Kyoko caressed Kiki's head and told the curious girl "Mama has to go now Kiki, but I'll be back soon with Dada, okay?" Kyoko kissed her daughter's head and cooed "Mama loves you!"

"Mama!" Kiki giggled as she clapped.

Makoto smiled at Kiki and kissed the tip of her nose before he told her "We'll be back soon, so be good for Aunt Toko, okay Kiki?" He then looked up at Toko and noted "We should get going…"

"The diapers and wipes are in the bathroom, and there's some leftover baby food in the fridge." Kyoko told Toko as her husband pulled her away by the wrist. "Call us if anything's wrong."

"We'll be fi…fine…so g…go already." Toko stammered as Makoto smiled from over his shoulder.

"Have fun, you two!"

Once the two parents had disappeared down the hallway, Toko sighed and looked down at the bundle of joy in her arms. Kiki looked up at her curiously, making Toko feel nervous.

"What? Stop sta…staring at me…come on, let's go read or whatever…"

"And the Prince and Princess lived happily ever after…the end." Toko sighed as she closed the book and placed it into the pile.

"Again, Toko! Again!" Kiki giggled as she clapped.

Geez, this kid is insatiable! Toko glanced at the pile of board books as she muttered "But you've read every single book you have! Haven't you had enough reading?"

Kiki's heterochromatic eyes watered with tears before she cried, her wails threatening to shatter Toko's eardrum.

Kami, this kid can shriek! If this keeps up, she'll shatter my eardrums! In a desperate bid to save her hearing, Toko caved "Alright, alright already! I'll read more, just stop crying!"

Kiki instantly stopped crying before she smiled innocently at her honorary aunt.

Yeah, you're real innocent… Toko thought sarcastically before she heard Kiki's stomach grumble. "Alright, before we read more, why don't we feed you? I can think of what to read while you're eating."

Without waiting for an answer, Toko took Kiki into her arms and stood up. Once she dusted off her skirt, Toko walked out of the room and towards the kitchen.

"Now let's see…your parents said your food was in the fridge, right…?"

At least she doesn't make a mess when she's eating… Toko thought with relief as she continued spoon feeding the young toddler. "And…done." She sighed as Kiki giggled. "I can see why Makoto calls her a little ball of sunshine during Professional Development meetings; she's always so giggly and she smiles all the time…just like her dad."

Toko pulled back the tray and lifted Kiki out of her highchair, causing the girl to lightly kick her feet in the air.

"Hey, settle down, you want more stories or not?" Kiki's feet went still in the air, causing Toko to sigh "At least you listen well…alright, let's see. I know I have a few unwritten stories in my brain somewhere, but what to tell you?"

Toko continued to muse as she walked through the hallways, sorting through the stories in her head as she tried to think of one that would be appropriate for the Daughter of Hope.

"Let's see…to violent, too dark, too sad, too adult…man, are none of my stories family friendly? How did I ever become a best-selling novelist without widening my appeal?"

Toko sighed as they sat down on the couch, humming until one finally came to mind.

"I've got it!" She exclaimed as her eyes lit up in realization. "Alright, Kiki, you wanna hear a new story?"

"Yeah!" Kiki exclaimed while clapping.

"Alright, settle down, settle down. This story takes place in a deep, enchanted forest, far away from any civilization. And deep within that forest lived two elves. One was a happy, but clueless boy. The other was a kindhearted, yet shy girl who kept her distance from the other elves. But one day…"

"Eww…" Toko shuddered as she threw the dirty diaper in the nearby trash can. "Did you have to get a dirty diaper in the middle of the story?"

Kiki cocked her head, smiling innocently on the counter as Toko sighed. The writer grumbled as she focused on securing the clean diaper around Kiki's torso.

"There, all clean." She announced as she picked up Kiki and carried her out of the bathroom. As Kiki giggled, Toko muttered "Yeah, you think this is really funny, don't you?"

"Funny!"

Toko sighed and muttered as she walked through the halls of the manor "Let's just finish the story…now, where was I, oh yes."

Toko walked into the living room and sat down on the couch before she continued her improvised tale.

"The girl and her fellow elves were all beginning to lose hope when the evil monster stared them down. But one elf stood strong: the boy she had fallen in love with. He turned to each and every one of them and with nothing but the words that flowed from his lips, reinvigorated them with hope. Then he turned to the girl, whose love he secretly returned before he…"

"With the monster defeated, the two elves professed their love and lived happily ever after in the forest. The end."

Toko looked down at Kiki, who leaned into her breasts as she snored happily against the writer.

"Huh, she finally fell asleep…" Toko's purple eyes glanced at the sleeping toddler, her expression softening as she admitted "I guess she's kinda cute when she's asleep…"

"We're home!" Makoto's voice rang through the halls, disrupting Toko's focus before the two parents entered the living room. "How was she?"

Toko barely hid a smile as she replied while looking down at the one-year-old "I guess she was okay…there weren't any crises at any rate, just typical baby stuff."

"I'm glad to hear that." Kyoko replied as she approached and reached for her baby. "Hey, Kiki." She whispered with a loving smile as she held her snoozing daughter in her arms. "Did you have fun with Aunt Toko?"

"…Yeah…" Kiki mumbled, still asleep in her mother's arms.

"I'm glad to hear that…come on, I'll put you to bed…"

Makoto smiled as he watched his wife walk to their room with their daughter in tow. He then turned to Toko, a proud and approving expression on his face.

"Looks like you two had a fun time."

"…Please, your daughter was insatiable! She never wanted to stop re…reading!"

Makoto chuckled, scratching his cheek as he explained "Yeah…she loves it when one of us reads to her at night. Still, you seem to have done a good job, and she's none worse for wear. Maybe another time you'd like to…"

"No, forget about it! I'm not a babysitter, Makoto! This was a one-time…" Seeing Makoto's knowing smile, Toko sighed and admitted "…Maybe once in a while wouldn't hurt…but only as a last resort!"

Makoto giggled "Alright, I'll talk with Kyoko about it. Well, I'll let you get home now. Thanks again for coming on such short notice, Toko. I'll include a bonus with your next paycheck for helping us out. Tell Hiro we said hi, okay?"

"Yeah…sure." Toko stood up and muttered "See you at work…" before she walked out of the living room.

Makoto sighed with a smile, happy that his little babysitting experiment had turned out alright. He turned towards the hallway where their bedroom lay.

"Well, better help Kyoko tuck Kiki into bed before we call it a night…" Makoto muttered before he walked towards their bedroom, eager to join his two favorite girls in slumber for the night.
