Pegasus
Joel was in the kitchen at the kettle when a little girl came sprinting in.
"Hey Daddy-O,"
"Hey Monny,"
"You wanna play some badminton outside,"
"In a little while. Right now I'm making myself and your mother some tea,"
"Are you mum considering having a kid together?"
"Okay Monny. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. We've only been married five years. We just wanna enjoy what time we have with you first,"
"You know you may not be my birth dad, but you're the best dad in the world," the young girl Joel called Monny gave him a tight hug and he hugged her back.
"And you're the sweetest kid ever," he kissed her head. She giggled and dashed off.
Joel heard the kettle steaming and poured some tea into two cups. He was just pouring in some milk when the radio, which was turned, began speaking of reports about a strange duo in rubber space suits rushing on a train shooting blasts from their hands before the report of a motorcycle thief. A second after that he heard his phone ringing. Fury. It said on the screen.
"Ahh….Nicky," he said. He pressed the green button and pressed it to his hear. "Hey Fury,"
"How's my dear pal…Joel,"
"Oh new just enjoying fatherhood. Hope you're handling things well at the office Nick. I've almost got the reports ready for you,"
He noticed that there was a slight respire in Nick's voice through the com. "What?"
"Look…have you listened to radio?"
"I was just hearing the news. Something about a crazy girl and guy on a train,"
"It's more to it than that. Something was in my car. And it looked exactly like Phil Colson,"
"What do you mean looked like Phil Colson?"
"It morphed into him. And it tried to kill me,"
Joel was rather taken. "You're saying you were attacked by an alien?"
"I believe so. Look, get ready for something you're not going to believe,"
"Ok-ay," Joel was more confused by the second but he knew his friend wouldn't lie to him even if he could.
"Turn the TV on," Nick said.
"Why would I…"
"Just turn it on,"
Joel took the remote and pressed the power button. The news turned revealing a crazy guy and girl on a train. He turned the volume up. Walking closer, he felt his heart pounding away when the girl with golden locks and the boy with red hair came into clear view.
"Carol?" he breathed. A tear escaped his eye.
"Darling…" Maria's voice sounded like whispers which he was unable to respond to.
Maria came stepping into the room. "Joel…are you alright?" he didn't turn to her. His eyes stayed glued to the screen.
She copied his line of vision. The second she did, her eyes enlarged, and she felt her heart stopped. "Oh – my – god,"
Vers and Yorgoth were driving along the road stretching across the desert.
"Blimey…this heat is something," Yorgoth complained.
"Just be lucky we're wearing suits adapted to conditions just like this," Vers said.
"You know I do wish you wouldn't clung onto me like that. I have a very sensitive rib cage,"
"Well…I have a very sensitive desire not to fall off. So like it or not, I'm glued to you this position,"
Yorgoth hide a sneaky smile from his partner and looked ahead again. "Ah ha. Here we are," He pulled up right beside a building called Pancho's bar. "Just in the nick of time. I have actually considering pushing you off,"
"And I was actually considering pushing you off and taken control," Vers joked back. They went inside. For some strange reason, they couldn't help but feel that they had been hear before. For a slight moment Vers could almost picture herself singing with a group of people. Yorgoth imagined himself at a games consul. He walked around staring at some pictures, when something caught his eyes.
Glancing closer she saw a large plane with a Pegasus horse on the back fin. "Vers, look at this,"
Vers came over and eyed what he found. "That was on the memory chip,"
"It seems like we found our light speed engine,"
"But where exactly?"
The pair heard ruffling and turned around to see a bar owner.
"Where was this photo taken?" asked Yorgoth.
"An airport,"
"Who and where is Pegasus?" Vers asked.
Before the man could answer, another voice invaded the scene. "That's classified. Not unlike the fire I started on you two,"
The three turned around to see Nick Fury approaching them. He had a plaster over his eyebrow.
"But you've changed a bit. Grunge looks good on you," Nick complimented the pair. He gestured to the bar owner to leave them which he did without hesitation.
"Rough day, Agent Fury?" greeted Vers, quite surprised by his appearance.
"It was cool. Had a space invasion, big car chase. Got to watch an alien autopsy. Typical nine to fie
"Saw you believe our story about Skrulls infiltrating our planet?" Yorgoth said a little cockily.
"Look I'm not one to believe in aliens…but I can't unsee what I saw," Nick frowned. "And wipe that smug off your face,"
"No. Keep it on. It's cute," Vers said in a flirty man.
"Stop that," Yorgoth hit her shoulder softly.
"Before we continue this…amusing talk…" Vers looked at Agent Fury again. "How do we know you're not a Skrull,"
"You two are looking at 100% red-blooded Earth man,"
"That's not enough,"
"You're just I give a urine example?"
"First of all…eww," Vers spoke back. "And second…Skrulls can match the DNA,"
"Want a AOL password instead,"
"Skrulls can only host memories of their host bodies,"
"We're goanna have an interrogation," Yorgoth announced. "And don't even think of trying to run away,"
"What you think I'm afraid you're goanna blast me?" Nick cackled.
Yorgoth stepped forward. "Don't underestimate us Fury,"
Fury was not even the slightest scared.
They sat down. Vers kept asking hundreds of questions that even Yorgoth was beginning to get tired.
"Where were you born?"
"Huntsville, Alabama,"
"Name your first pet,"
"Vers, is that really a necessary questions?" asked Yorgoth.
"Don't interrupt the lady," Fury said.
"Thank you that now will you answer the question?" Vers requested.
"Mr. Snoofers,"
Nick's answers made Yorgoth snigger. He tried to keep it quiet but his vibrating throat was making Vers and Nick look at him in amusement. "Sorry," he apologised quickly. He tried to keep quiet but he continued to snigger.
"Just ignore him," Vers said. "First job,"
"Soldier,"
"After that?"
"Don't I pass?"
"Uh ah,"
"Spy,"
"When,"
"During the Cold War. After that for the past six years, I've been working for six years at the desk trying to figure how our future enemies,"
"Did you ever imagine they'd be coming up above from space?" Yorgoth asked.
"Never occurred to me. Didn't believe in aliens,"
"Until now," Yorgoth just smug-smiled again.
"Enough of that smile," Nick was annoyed. "Now it's my turn to ask questions. How do I know you two aren't Skrulls?"
Vers fired up his hand and shot a blast a game consul destroy the screen.
Fury just stared at her with a hard glance. "And how that supposed to tell me you're not a Skrull?"
"Photon blast,"
"And…?" he raised his eyebrows.
"Skrulls can't do that,"
"And you?" the agent eyed Yorgoth carefully.
"I can do that. How about I do that between your eyebrows?" Yorgoth raised his fits.
"Enough," Fury interrupted. "I believe you two now. Now time to arrange a truce. You two help find out what's going and why these…Skrulls are on our planet…I'll take you where you need to go,"
Vers and Yorgoth shared a glance at each other. They realised that they had no other option.
The Trio drove in Nick's car across the desert. Whilst Vers sat in the front with Nick, Yorgoth had all the space in the front with Nick.
"Yorgoth, dare I ask why you get all the room in the back?"
"Because I'm sensitive to tight spaces,"
"I have a big footrest in the front,"
"Not enough,"
"Okay you two. Time for a talk," announced the driver. "The Skrull sim other places to take over planets?"
"Yep,"
"And you guys are members of a Kree race of noble warriors?"
"Heroes. Noble warrior heroes. We follow our mentor Yon-Rogg," Yorgoth said. "He's the finest Kree teacher in the Empire," he admired him greatly.
"So, um, what do Skrulls want with Dr. Lawson?"
"They're looking for a light speed engine which she built in Pegasus. We have to get to it before they do or they'll take over new galaxies and we won't be able to stop the," announced Vers.
"Usually it's against my better instincts…but if it means the protection of Earth…I'll do it,"
"Well you are a spy are you not?" Yorgoth asked.
"That I am,"
"Well then it's your job to protect the planet and by helping us you're doing it,"
"Doesn't mean I like it,"
"I wouldn't say that Fury," Vers answered. "You'll probably enjoy our company,"
They came to a metal-net face with a security box standing next to the road.
Nick leaned out of the window to speak into the com. "Nicholus Jospeh Fury. Shield Agent,"
"Nicholas?" asked Yorgoth. "I was just getting used to call you Fury,"
"Everyone calls me Fury," Nick announced.
"What does your mum call you?" Vers asked, beginning interigating again.
"Fury,"
"Kids. Fury,"
"Friends. Fury too," Nick held out his card for the box to scan.
For some reason, Yorgoth sensed a strange emotion painting on Nick. As Nick pulled back, he spoke up again. "Okay what is it?"
"What's what?" Nick asked.
"That look. Why do you look so puzzled? I'm quite surprised Vers didn't pick it up earlier,"
Vers just frowned at him. "It was an interrogation on important facts only he knows. Not about emotions,"
Nick sighed. "Look I'm not goanna lie to you two. We have met before. You just don't seem to remember. Now…" he twisted around a bit in his seat. "Look…you two are goanna think I'm crazy but you're not exactly Kree as you claim,"
"Yes we are," Yorgoth snapped. "And we'd know you if we did,"
"It seems like you guys have got amnesia"
"Well, we kind of do. I mean…we don't remember anything before we joined the Kree empire to help it fight the Skrulls," Vers explained.
"Does the name Joel Danvers mean anything to you?" Nick asked.
"Nope,"
"Really? Because I happen to think you did. But you guys just can't remember," Nick pulled out his phone and switched on picture on his phone. He passed it to Vers.
Vers took it and stared deeply into. It was her in clothes. Next to her was a young man with short hair and a chin covered in bristles. There was also Yorgoth and a black-haired lady next to him.
Yorgoth peered over and saw what she saw. He gasped. They glanced at each other, paleness overcoming their faces.
"I'm quite shocked I didn't recognise you two at first. We met once six years ago. When you two…died…or supposedly did, Joel and his wife Maria were so heartbroken. He never told me the details. Only that you two died without a clear trace," Nick spoke sadly. "Now I would have told all this before…but….I didn't know how you'd react when you guys couldn't even give your real names when we met,"
Vers and Yorgoth just stared at him. "You know our names?"
"I do. But I'm not goanna tell you,"
"Why not?" Vers almost snapped.
"Cause I don't deal well with emotional stuff and it's not mine to tell. You know after I help with this…I'm taking you two to meet some people. It was Joel's request. He and I are close buddies,"
"What people?" Yorgoth demanded.
"People who've missed you a lot. Once I told them what I saw and they saw you guys on TV…"
"TV?" Yorgoth repeated incredulously, almost as if he knew the meaning of the word.
"Your train fiasco was recorded on the news,"
"We want to know who we are," demanded Vers.
"It's not mine to tell," argued Fury. "Now best we drop for now and go find Lawson. You two said you wanted to save the world yeah? Well sometimes duty is put before emotion," Nick watched the gates slide open and he drove on.
Vers and Yorgoth said nothing after that. Vers almost looked rather shaken. Yorgoth reached over and clasped her shoulder gently. When he saw no reaction, he attempted to pull back when he felt fingers grabbing his. For uncanny reasons, his emotions began to warm just feeling her touch.
They drove into a long stone tunnel until they reached the underground base within the mountain and Nick parked up.
They each stepped out.
"You guys look like a junk yard duo. Put these on," Nick tossed two caps over to them.
"What's this?" Vers looked at the symbol sew on the front.
"It's the S.H.I.E.L.D. logo,"
"Does announcing your identity help with the covert part of your job?"
"Said the space soldiers who claim they're Kree and were wearing rubber suits,"
"They're not made of rubber," Yorgoth snapped.
They walked to the edge of the park, looking over to see a lower level of airplanes.
"Wow," Yorgoth breathed. "This is so unlucky anything back at Kree base,"
"How can I help you?" a man walked up to them.
"We're agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," Fury held up his pass as proof.
"We're looking for a woman named Lawson," Yorgoth requestioned.
"A Dr. Lawson," Vers corrected, giving a smug smiled to her partner who just rolled his eyes playfully.
The man looked rather slow in reacting. He passed the pass back to Nick.
"Follow me,"
Minutes later, the Trio were sitting in a basement, bored.
"Why are we stuck out here? Is this what a welcoming comity is like on Earth?" asked Yorgoth. He hated boredom.
"Have you guys ever heard of the term 'welcome wagon'?"
"Nope,"
"Well, this ain't it," He reached up his thumb and scanned it. The screen turned red.
"Why won't they let you in? You're a member of S.H.I.E.L.D,"
"Doesn't mean I have access to everything. Now if you're excuse me, I've got to find something,"
Nick went into a drawer and pulled out some cello tape and cut a piece off. He pressed it against his pass. Holding it up to the light after pulling it off, he saw a finger mark. Then, pressing it against the screen, it glowed green. The door was unlocked.
"Impressive," Vers spoke up.
"You should what I can do with a paper clip,"
"Well I'd love to see you do that. Ladies first," Yorgoth offered to his partner.
"No. I insist," Vers stepped forward.
"As you wish," Yorgoth did a flirty smiled and tried to step through but Vers beat him through the door. "Show off,"
He walked in after her down a long stone corridor. He noticed Nick standing beside him.
"What?"
"You two are so cute together,"
"We're not cute. We're just partners,"
"Oh really? Cause when I met you guys for the first time…I could see clear chemistry between you two. You and Vers…"
"Look Ni…Fury you may have only seen us once before in whatever life we had and now we're working with you but you know nothing about us. Now…just drop what you're goanna say next and let's keep moving," He moved on ahead, unable to allow his growing shock to out weight his commitment to his duty.
What did you all think? And allso the slight change and additon of more dialogue. Please let me know what you all thought. I would love to hear your opinions. What did you all think of Nick knowing them and the other OC Joel? Please, please send reviews. I would love to hear all your opinions.
