Here's the other chapter. So sorry that this took a long while. Aside from other stories, I've got university. Hope you enjoy this.
People from the Past
Joel sat silently at the kitchen table, grazing his fingers over a picture. A picture of his older brother, his younger sister and himself. Ever since seeing his girl in the picture on the tv, his mind had been swirling in so many circles like a tornado.
He had spoken a single word either. Not even to his wife who like him wanted to be alone and dwell on memories long past.
The ringing of his phone disturbed his quite peaceful moment. Turning to the phoen, he saw Fury's name on the screen. Hesitantly, he lifted the phone and pressed the green button before pressing it tenderly to his ear. "Fury?"
"Ah Joel…how are you doing?"
Joel was silent for a long second. "Alright," he spoke up sadly.
"Look…I know this is very hard for you to accept, and as your dear friend I truly sympathise with what you're going through, but your sister…and your friend are alive. I'm currently with them now. I know that…you never talked about what happened to them…but I know now,"
"How?" Joel's voice sounded very broken.
"It's…bit of a long story,"
"What sort of story?"
"One that involves shape-shifting aliens and powerful light speed engines,"
If Joel wasn't in a dark place at the moment, he would have laughed and said, "That's ridiculous" to his close friend.
"We'll coming to your place Joel,"
Joel's heart seemed to lift.
"But once we arrive, don't expect too much,"
"What do you mean?" Joel asked.
On the other side of the line, Fury was tentative to speak another word. He didn't know how this was going to turn out. Looking to the far front, he saw Vers and Yorgoth having another one of their goofy chats which he considered very romantic.
"Fury, please say…" Joel implored. "I don't care how hurtful it might be. I already suffered so much pain eight years ago, I can handle it again,"
Regretfully, Fury spoke the next words. "They don't remember you. They don't remember anything before eight years ago. I even showed them a picture. Vers didn't remember that you're her brother. But I've told her,"
Joel's fingers lost their strength. His hand dropped onto the table with the phone. Fury's words had stung him much harder than he thought they would. He heard the call ending. Fury was going to let him take a long moment to take it all in. Once again, his mind went tossing and turning into a void of unhappy feelings.
He heard footsteps approaching. Looking to the door, he saw Maria appearing. "Was that Fury?"
Joel nodded. "It was,"
Maria's face dropped when she saw the heartbroken look on his face. "What's wrong?"
Joel couldn't speak.
"Joel," Maria sat on a seat in front of him and took his hands. "Whatever you're feeling, please tell me. We had each other when we lost Carol and Walter eight years ago. And we have each other now. You have me. And I have you,"
Joel managed a small smile, and he cupped his wife's cheek in his hand. She clasped it tight to her skin. "Okay," he said. "But the moment you can't take it anymore, please tell me,"
Maria manged a small smile back and nodded.
Yorgoth sat in a slumped position in his seat, thinking about a lot of things. He thought about everything he had learnt back at the compound, the scientist being his mother, the fact that he was truthfully a Kree raised on Earth, the face that he and Vers knew each other a long time ago. Were they friends? Were they perhaps something more?
Too many questions were running through his head that he was beginning to bear the burden of an awful megrim.
"Hey. You okay?" Vers asked from her seat. Instead of sounding goofy or funny, she sounded really concerned.
Yorgoth looked at her. "I have so many questions right now. And I don't even have anyone to answer them. Even Yon Rogg won't give me answers. I'm tired to having secrets kept from me. I don't even know if our team allies can be trusted anymore,"
"What makes you say that?"
"The way they've always looked at us, the way they've always known about us…"
"Just relax. Be patient. Once we arrive at Louisiana, we'll find answers to the people from our past,"
"And if we don't?" Yorgoth challenged. He didn't mean to sound overdramatic. "I'm sorry. It's just getting harder to handle everything that's been going on,"
"Don't feel sorry. I'm finding it hard too," Vers confessed.
"I can't imagine. First we find out that Wendy Lawson is…was my mother. Then we find out that this Joel person is your brother and that we had a best friend. Do you think they've missed us all these years?"
"I think they have," Vers said, a little sadly. "I can't stop thinking about what they must have been through, thinking we were dead all these years whilst we were stuck on a planet far away across the galaxy, with no memories of our families, our friends, our homes," Trying to outweigh her concentration was her mind's voice of many puzzled thoughts and complicated feelings.
How did we even head up on Hala in the first place? How did Yorgoth find us in the first place? What was my mother doing on Earth, raising me away from my own species?"
"We're going to figure it all out," Vers spoke up.
"Together," her partner finished.
She saw him giving her a smile. Turning her face to the side, she hid a flushed face, her awkwardness replaced by something much more embarrassing.
Once again Goose tried to get Yorgoth to stroke him. "Okay," he gave him and lifted him up. He allowed the cat to rest on his laps and he caressed him with her soft fingers. Goose purred and begged for more attention.
For a brief moment, Yorgoth was actually beginning to enjoy it. Somehow stroking the ginger cat began to spark some very happy memories long buried in his head. Himself as a kid with his mother, himself playing about with the cat who seemed never to age, himself playing with Vers and doing all other sorts of things with her. It seemed like all his life, she had been a key part of his childhood, his life until up to the day his mother died and he lost his memories.
"I never thought you'd be a cat person," Vers spoke up.
Normally Yorgoth would have spoke back with a rebuke but instead he just accepted the words and felt his face redden again.
"Isn't this just touching?" Fury spoke up from the back.
Looking back, they saw a goofy grin.
"Don't start Fury," Vers said. "We're very close anyway so that's enough,"
Fury's eyes dropped and his funny face was replaced with a worried expression.
"What's up Fury?" Yorgoth asked.
"Guys…when we get there…just…take it easy,"
"What do you mean take it easy?" Yorgoth blabbered out. "We're about to meet people from our past and you're saying take it easy?"
"Things will be very different between you guys since eight years ago. They've been through so much since you...died. You can't imagine how much losing you Vers did to Joel,"
Vers couldn't believe she was feeling so traumatised.
Joel and Maria sat outside in a giant garage with an old plane. After what Joel had just told her, Maria decided to get back on mechanising the air vehicle to try and keep her mind off things.
Monica was playing about with a ball just outside with Joel. Joel felt a little happy playing a game with his daughter, but he remained rather conflicted after confessing to his wife about Fury.
Maria watched the scene unfold with little happiness.
"Hello?" an acquainted voice called.
"We're looking for Maria Rambeau and Joel Danvers," another familiar spoke up.
Maria turned around to see a blonde-haired lass and a young ginger-haired lad standing right outside the garage. The moment she saw them, she felt her heart lift.
"Who's there mum?" Monica came running forward. The moment she saw the two visitors, she burst into a squeal of delight. "It's Auntie Carol and Uncle Wally! Mum! Dad! It's Auntie Carol! And Uncle Wally!"
Instantly she ran to them, expecting a hug. Yorgoth anxiously hugged her back. Whilst he was busy embracing the enthusiastic kid, Vers sent over a strange awkward glance at Maria and Joel who were now walking towards her.
Tears were streaming down Joel's face. "It's really you Carry," he breathed hoarsely.
"You must be Joel," she greeted.
Joel remained too lost for words.
"Fury told us everything," Maria said.
Yorgoth looked over to her and her husband. "It's quite a long story. But we know we have to tell it,"
"That is just bull shit," Maria finished, slumping back into her seat.
"Are you guys even hearing yourselves?" Joel questioned, leaning his chin on the back of his chair.
"There's no such thing as green shifting aliens," Monica pointed out.
"You are absolutely right young lady," Fury said again. "Cause if there were, we would want to keep that to ourselves," he cast a serious glance at Joel. "I told you that bring Carol and Walter back would bring back a lot of surprises,"
"Watch this," Vers walked over to a kettle. She pressed her hand against it. It glowed.
The kettle started boiling up. Then it started whistling.
Joel's eyes enlarged.
"Watch this," Yorgoth stood up and blasted a simple plant pot on a windowsill right in front of their eyes.
Maria jumped in her seat. "That was my favourite plant,"
"Sorry," Yorgoth apologised awkwardly.
"They can do a lot more than that," Fury said.
"Can you show me more please?" Monica was urgent to see more.
"Maybe later," Vers gently refused.
"What we need to do right now, is remember who we were here," Yorgoth requested.
"I kept all your stuff," Monica sped off. "I'll go get it,"
"I'll give you a hand," Joel spoke again.
"Wait," Fury interposed. "Let me,"
"No Fury you don't have to…"
"You need to talk Joel. It may not be easy but you have to," Fury walked off after the girl.
Vers and Yorgoth sat down in front of Maria and Joel.
"You really can't remember anything?" Maria asked.
"We see flashes," Vers answered. "Little moments. But we can't see what's real. They never gave us proper clues to who we were and what our past was like,"
"If we could just piece together what happened that morning that we…supposedly died, maybe it might make sense," Yorgoth said. "Please tell us what you remember,"
Joel sighed. "I remember you waking me up Carry…." he smiled a little at his sister. "Telling me how excited you were about being the best woman at the wedding…then we went to get Maria and Wally here…"
Yorgoth frowned softly. He wasn't quite keen on that nickname.
"We had to get up so early," Maria said. "The Air Force still wasn't letting woman fly combat…the boys believed we should be allowed the opportunity. Testing Lawson's planes were our only shot at doing something that mattered. Carol…you wanted to race to base in your old Mustang and I wasn't about to argue because I knew my Camaro would dominate,"
"I decided to go with my future wife that day," Joel spoke up. "And you Wally…"
"Don't call me that please," Yorgoth begged.
"You loved to be called that. So I'm calling you that. Anyways you went with Carol. But you guys cheated, and took a shortcut,"
"Is shortcut really considered cheating?" his long-lost sister asked.
"Since it is considered a violation of the rules of engagement,"
"I don't remember any of that,"
"You always used to see, Oppsy I forgot every time you broke or tried to break rules," Joel's comment actually sparked a bit of laughter between them as if they were not remembering how much they missed each other.
"When I got to the hanger…" Maria continued. "Lawson was agitated. She said she had lives to save. She was trying to take the Asis up herself but you Carol said that…."
"If there were lives at stake, I would fly the plane," Vers remembered.
"Yep. A big hero moment," Maria said.
"I was so proud of you when you spoke that," spoke Joel next. "It was the thing I loved about you Vers. Your desire to put the wellbeing of others first. Lawson was so unique and you always followed her around Wally…you always agreed with everything she said no matter how insane it sounded,"
Learning about the powerful relationship with his mother made Yorgoth very silent but sentimental.
"And now you're saying that she's from another planet…that you're actually a Kree…and not human," Joel spoke next.
"I know this is a lot to take in," Yorgoth said. "It was for me too,"
"Do you guys want to know what was really hard?" Joel asked next. "For us? Losing you two. And the worse part being that everyone acted like it never happened. We had to hold a private funeral for you two. It felt so heart-breaking that we had to let you guys go. I couldn't even go to our dad Carol and look at his face. And now you two come back here after six long years…with super-charged hands and with new names,"
"You've no idea how difficult it was for us to learn that no only were you two alive when we saw you on TV…but that you couldn't remember anything…not even us," Maria was struggling to hold back her tears. "Who are you two now?"
Yorgoth just held his head down in agony.
All Vers could say was, "I don't know,"
"We got your stuff guys!" Monica called from the hallway.
They walked to the hallway and saw Nick and Monica with boxes.
They saw numbers and numbers of photos of them. "This is one from Halloween," Monica held up a picture of her and Vers in costumes. "I'm Amelia Earhart and you're Janis Joplin,"
"You look funny," Yorgoth laughed.
"You and your brothers were really close. But it was Joel who always looked out for you," Monica said next. Vers cast a glance at Joel who was beginning to smile a bit. "You didn't get along with your parents so we became your real family,"
Vers felt a dark cloud forming over her head as she remembered the cruel father who was always down on her.
"This one is of you," Monica held up a picture to Yorgoth. It was him as a baby with his mother. He stroked it tenderly, feeling such love emitting from that picture. "You loved each other so much. She was quite overprotective of you. She always made sure you weren't involved in sports or got into fights. She said something about bringing you to a safer home, a better home,"
Yorgoth felt deeply depressed hearing more and more about his mother's love and care for him. "What about my father?"
"You've never had a father," Joel said. "Lawson never married anyone one. But the way…she spoke whenever you used to ask her, she sounded…broken, disgusted in a strange way,"
Yorgoth felt more and more tinged by his words.
Monica continued showing more and more photos. "This is us on Christmas. I got my favourite bunny slippers,"
She showed a picture of Joel and Vers when they were children. Then one of them when they were teenagers. Seeing him always standing by her side made Vers so touched. He was more the father to her than her biological father was.
They more they dug into the past in those pictures, the most and more memories seemed to drift back into Vers and Yorgoth's head.
"Oh. I forgot your jackets," Monica dashed off. "Mom and Dad does let me wear them anymore,"
"And for a good reason!" Joel argued. "You spilt ketchup on Carry's and almost got paint spilt on Wally's,"
Continuing to look over their old things, Vers and Yorgoth discovered dog tags which were half destroyed.
Vers picked it up. It said Carol Dav at the top. Yorgoth pick up two halves of another dog tag. Walter was engraved on one side. Lawson was engraved on the other.
"That was all that survived the crash," Maria said.
"Or so we thought," Joel spoke up, sniffling.
Vers looked to him.
"I was so broken when you were lost that day. I spent too many days blaming myself for what happened to you. I would have given anything to take back that stupid decision I made in letting you and Walter undertake this project,"
Vers felt drawn to his love that she turned to him. He was hanging his head down in grief. She raised a hand and touched his shoulder. He turned to her. "I'm sorry…that you went through so much. And you," she looked to Maria who was crying a little as well.
"We're sorry too," Yorgoth said again. "Guys…if there was any way that we could have remembered our lives, we would have come back,"
"Well…at least you two had each other," Joel managed to hold back another sob. "You two have always had each other's back. It was as if fate was choosing you two to be together,"
"Just stop…" Vers playfully begged her brother.
"You and Walter were so close that we used to tease about you being well…." he clicked his tongue.
Yorgoth actually held up a face of great grimace. But nothing could hide the colour which his face was burning bright with.
Vers just looked over to him, to hold up a smile.
In an instant, Yorgoth was drawn to her.
"He's got a good point…" a new voice spoke up behind them.
Everyone turned around in a flash to see Talos standing right in the hallway. Instantly Fury pulled out a gun and Vers and Yorgoth fired up their fists.
"You just don't know when to give up," Yorgoth hissed.
"You know I don't. Not when I have promises which I made with old friends to keep,"
"Let me guess? My mother?" Yorgoth questioned.
His answer brought shock to Talos's face.
"I know she's my mother. And I know…"
"Don't assume for one second, she and her were close. Friends yes. But not together romantically,"
"Friends?" Vers repeated. "You and a Kree, your known enemy, were friends?" her hands burned brighter.
"Now before you and your boy go swing those jazzy hands of your and making a mess of your friend's house…" Talos spoke up again.
"Maria…" Joel spoke up.
Maria looked through the window and saw herself standing with Monica. "What the hell?"
Joel turned to Talos in a flash. "If he harms her…"
"Would you relax Joel Danvers? No one's goanna hurt her," Talos assured.
"But you think it's okay to hurt my sister? And our best friend?" Joel snapped, stepping closer.
"I never harmed either of them. Just don't kill me. That would really complicate the situation,"
"I'm about five seconds from covering that wall with your Skrull brains," Fury warned.
"I'm sorry I simmed your boss,"
"So you apologise for doing that but not attacking Fury or them?" Joel questioned.
"Look. I now stand before you as my true self. Without deception,"
"Hate to break it to you but your actions speak louder than words," Yorgoth warned. "Like that guy out there for starters,"
"Okay that's a fair point. But I'm sure that you understand, I had to take some precautions,"
Maria looked worriedly outside to her daughter. Joel clutched her hand, assuring her their child would be alright.
"I saw you two crush twenty of my best men with your hands bound," Talos said to Yorgoth and Vers. "I just wanna talk,"
"Last time we talked, you had us hanging from our ankles," Vers spoke.
"And our hands bound whilst you put taser lasers into our brains," Yorgoth added in.
"That was before I realised you were Lawson's son, Walter…and your girlfriend here. You two have no idea what you've been drawn into…since the day you guys crashed,"
His words seemed to intrigue the duo but they kept their guard.
"I have an audio recording from Pegasus of your voice from that plane crash six years ago on a device I believe you call a 'black box,","
"Impossible. They said it was desteroyed in the crash!" Maria denied. "How'd you get it?"
"Listen young lady…"
"Call her that again I'll my foot in a spot you won't find ticklish," Joel warned.
"And where would you be doing that?"
"Your ass," Vers and Yorgoth answered together.
"Let's just relax. We're clearly on. little bit on edge. I just need some help with coordinates,"
"We're not helping you," Yorgoth retorted.
"Trust me. It will worth your while. You've no idea what your mother did all her life…to keep you safe,"
"Safe?" Yorgoth repeated.
"Safe. From people you couldn't trust to be your guidance. If you care for your mother, and for your girl here…you will listen to me Walter Lawson,"
Yorgoth saw that Talos's voice was calm and reassuring. There was no hint of hatred or distain. He turned to his partner and even she could see it too.
"Don't listen to him guys," Joel begged.
"Call your buddy back inside and we'll listen," Vers decided. "And don't trick us,"
"You have my word," Talos swore.
Vers and Yorgoth cooled down their hands.
An instant after he said, Talos started panicking when he saw Goose right of Yorgoth acting very protectively. "Oh my god. Get that thing away please,"
Yorgoth lifted him up. "Are you telling me you're afraid of this cat?"
Talos backed down against the staircase. "That's not a cat,"
Fury burst out into peals of laughter.
"That's a Flerken,"
"A Flerken?" Fury laughed.
"Okay. I believe that there are shape-shifting aliens but a cat being an alien? That's ridiculous," Joel said.
"Mum?" Monica's voice rung up.
Everyone turned to see Monica in the hallway. She stared at her mother in shock. She turned around and saw what she thought was her mother turning back into a Skrull. It just shrugged. It began to panic.
"It's okay," Maria called her daughter over.
"It's alright. Nothing's going to happen," Joel assured.
Talos looked at Vers and Yorgoth who although allowed their guard to be done, remained holding cold glances at him. "Follow me,"
