Chapter Two: Hajime's Apology!

Hajime yawned as he laid on his side in bed, heavy bags under his eyes as the talented psychologist was unable to get any sleep at all. The sound of his alarm going off barely even registered before he sighed and reached for the bedside table. As he pressed the Off button and retracted his hand, his gaze wandered to a nearby picture frame.

"Komaru…"

Hajime's eyes watered as he stared forlornly at the photo of him and his wife on one of their early dates, the couple smiling as Hajime embraced her from behind.

This is all my fault; I drove Komaru and Soka away because I couldn't keep my temper in check…

"Then stop moping and apologize already."

Hajime sighed as Izuru voice vanished from his thoughts before he lamented "Yeah, I know that…"

Hajime reached for his phone on the bedside table and was about to hit the Call button before he hesitated. After a moment of contemplation, he sighed and placed it back on the bedside table.

"No, I can't be the one to make the first move this time. I need to wait for Komaru to decide if she wants to patch things up. And if she decides she hates me…" a single tear trickled down his cheek has he finished "…then I need to respect her wishes." Hajime sighed and swung his legs over the bed, standing p as he yawned "Well, might as well make breakfast…"

Still depressed, he forced himself to drag his feet out of the bedroom and towards the kitchen, hoping that his wife and son would find it in their hearts to forgive him for his temper.

"…Aunt Komaru?"

Komaru yawned as her eyes fluttered open, revealing her purple-haired nephew once her vision cleared.

"Hey…Hey, Moku…" She looked up and saw her brother standing next to his eldest son before she yawned "Ma…Makoto…"

"Good morning, sis. Moku wanted to come and wake you up; Kyoko's cooking breakfast while Kiki's keeping the twins occupied."

Komaru smiled and ruffled her nephew's hair as she muttered "Thanks, Moku." She glanced down at Soka, who was still snuggled up in her arms and asleep as she told them quietly "I'll be down in a bit; just give us a chance to wake up and get dressed, okay?"

Makoto smiled and agreed "Okay, come on, Moku. Let's give your aunt some privacy."

Mokubo dutifully followed his father out of the guest room before the boy closed the door behind him, leaving the two Hinatas alone.

"Itadakimasu!" Everyone chanted before they dug into the bountiful breakfast Kyoko had made for everyone.

"Mm, this is delicious!" Komaru gushed, complimenting her sister-in-law "Your breakfasts are just amazing, Kyoko!"

Kyoko smiled and told her "It comes with the territory of being a mom."

"Well, I'm a mom, and I can't cook this good. Hajime's always the one who…cooks…"

The cheery chatter soon fell silent as the elephant in the room made itself known.

Makoto sighed and asked "Speaking of Hajime, have you decided what you're going to do about this…issue?"

Komaru sighed and nodded, explaining "Well, I'm still upset that he blew up like that, but…we still need to talk things out properly. I might be upset with him, but I still love him."

Kyoko nodded approvingly and agreed "In that case, ask him to come here to talk so we can keep an eye on you two. Makoto and I can ask Mom and Dad to watch the kids, and Kiki has a project to finish with Tsumugi today, so you'll have the floor all to yourselves." As Komaru nodded gratefully, Kyoko instructed "But for now, eat up; your breakfast is getting cold."

"Yes, Mom!" Komaru laughed as she took another bite. Makoto, Kyoko, everyone…thanks for supporting us so much. I don't know what I'd do without you!

Hajime stared forlornly at his phone, waiting patiently for any contact from his wife.

"You're a coward, you know that? Just take the initiative and call."

No! Hajime rejected I'm not going to push Komaru to talk to me before she's ready! I just need to have hope that I can still salvage our relationship.

"If you say so…"

Hajime sighed in relief as Izuru's voice retreated back into his mind before he stared back at his phone.

Come on Komaru, please call…I'm really sorry! I just want a chance to…

A single ding interrupted his thoughts, causing Hajime to gasp as he saw a single message notification. He instantly tapped it with his thumb, opening his Messages app and reading the new message.

"Hajime, would you mind coming to Makoto's house as soon as possible? We need to talk. Komaru."

So she hasn't dumped me yet, hopefully I can apologize and fix this mess I created.

With his course of action decided, Hajime quickly sent a reply before he stood up and began to sift through the hose in search of his shoes, eager to see his wife and son again.

*Ding Dong!*

Makoto opened the door to reveal a nervous Hajime, holding a bouquet of flowers in one hand and a new toy in the other. Makoto sighed disapprovingly, causing Hajime to wince.

"Come in, Hajime. Komaru's in the living room."

Hajime nodded meekly and walked inside, following his brother-in-law.

"…You know that gifts alone aren't going to get you on my sister's good side, right? I hope you have sincere remorse to back up your presents."

"…Yeah, I do. I just…thought the flowers would make for a good apology present, and we had been talking about getting this toy that Soka had been wanting for a while now."

Makoto nodded neutrally and a tense silence passed as they walked through the halls. Before long, they arrived in the family room where Komaru was sitting on the sofa while holding Soka in her lap. Kyoko was sitting next to her, conversing until she trailed off and looked up with Komaru at the nervous Hajime. As Makoto and Hajime sat on the sofa across from them, the headmaster confiscated the bouquet and toy before he placed them behind the sofa, placing them out of sight and out of mind.

An awkward silence passed where Komaru and Hajime averted their gazes and fiddled with their ahoges before Hajime sighed and apologized "…I'm sorry."

Komaru stared at her husband and nodded, silently urging him to continue with his apology.

"I never should have blown up at you or Soka. I lost my temper, and that was inexcusable of me. I'm really, really sorry, Komaru!"

"…Hajime…why? Why were you so angry? Why didn't you talk to me before things got this bad?"

Hajime sighed and explained "…I wasn't angry at you, I was angry at…Akki. Being in the same room as the girl that nearly took you away, that nearly made me a single parent…just seeing her makes my blood boil."

"Hajime…"

"Komaru…you have no idea how worried I was when you turned the house upside down in search of your old Hacking Gun and announced that you were going to help Kiki fight off a hoard of Monokumas, without me there to protect you!"

"Hajime…everything turned out fine, though, and that was a while ago! I don't understand why it makes you so angry now, or why you didn't tell me about this befo…"

"I was ashamed, Komaru." Komaru's eyes widened in shock as tears trickled down Hajime's cheeks while he explained "Hearing what Akki tried to do, knowing that my niece and wife went up against another Junko, every time I saw her in my office and gave her therapy, it's like every mistake I ever made at Hope's Peak was slapping me in the face. I was useless back then, and my uselessness cost Chiaki her life! If you had died because I wasn't there to help you, I don't know if I would have ever forgiven myself. And you…I can't imagine how seeing her again and again made you feel. I didn't want to add to your own burdens. That's why I kept this to myself."

"Hajime…"

"…Daddy…?"

Hajime looked up, watching as his son squirmed out of Komaru's lap and toddled over to him.

"Soka…" Hajime cried as he embraced his son, lifting him into his lap. "I'm so sorry, Daddy's so sorry…"

Makoto and Kyoko smiled approvingly as Komaru finally smiled lovingly at her husband.

"…Feel better now that you've gotten it all out?"

"…Yeah, I do, actually."

"I'm glad to hear that." She then walked over to Hajime and knelt in front of him as she proposed "Come on, let's go home. And why don't we talk after each therapy session with Akki from now on and get our emotions off our chests? No secrets, no tempers."

"Sure, I can agree to that." Hajime laughed before he saw the bouquet of flowers and toy thrust into his lap. Seeing Makoto nod, Hajime held out the gifts and offered "Here, I got these for you guys as apology presents."

"Oh, thank you, Hajime!" Komaru exclaimed as she took the bouquet. "I love them! What do you think, Soka? Do you like your new toy?"

"Yeah!"

Komaru giggled as Hajime stood up and set his son on the ground before he said "Come on, little guy. Let's go play with your new toy at home."

"Yay!" Soka cheered as Hajime turned to address his in-laws.

"I owe you an apology too; I shouldn't have blown up in your household, especially during a family dinner, so I'm sorry."

"Just make sure you keep that temper of yours in check." Kyoko advised as Makoto nodded in agreement with his wife.

"Will do. Alright, we'll…see you at work then."

The Hinatas waved goodbye as they walked out of the living room, smiling as Hajime carried his son in his arms.

Thanks for staying by my side, Komaru, Soka. I promise, I won't let my temper get out of hand again, and I promise to tell you how I'm feeling.
