Another chapter done. Sorry it took so long. You all know. University work. Hope you all enjoy this. And prepare yourselves for a shock.
A Shocking Truth:
"Why can't I listen too?!" Monica complained, sitting on a bench outside a wooden hut.
"Because it's probably best if you don't," Joel answered. "Now we need to get this over with. I can't stand another second of that green alien dude anywhere near Carol,"
"Is this really the way you describe someone who's never done you any harm?!" Talos complained.
Joel frowned and marched right up to her. "Yes. Especially one who has accomplices that threaten a innocent child,"
"I'm not a child daddy J!" Monica complained from outside.
"Let's just get this over with before a scene starts," Yorgoth interrupted. He and Carol were sitting in front of a computer and a record player,"
Maria placed a disc inside.
They waited for a while as the device began loading.
For some strange reason, Yorgoth's hand felt drawn to Ver's next to his. He gently reached forward till he felt her fingers. She glanced at him. Believing he was invading her space, he pulled back, but he felt her fingers curl over his to pull him back. She offered a small smile.
He smiled back.
Just then they heard a recorded audio. They heard Wendy Lawson's voice. Punch in the coordinates. 5-2-2-9, negative 407, 8.7-6.8, 0.2
Roger that mum.
Yorgoth felt his heart almost stop as he heard himself calling Wendy Lawson his mother.
Where are we going Doc? It was Ver's voice.
My laboratory.
Why are we going to your laboratory when it's right here? Yorgoth's past voice asked.
I'm talking about my real laboratory. The one I've never shown you or Carol, Wally. Wendy's voice paused for a second. Oh no…
Mum?
It's them.
What's them? Vers asked. Wait, what is that?
From the sound of what they were hearing, Vers and Yorgoth could tell it had been trouble. Really big trouble.
I'll type it on my radar.
Faster! Wendy ushered. Faster!
At that very moment, Vers and Yorgoth felt a memory triggering back into their heads. A memory which had long been buried in their heads by the time they had arrived on Hala.
"Mother. What is that?" Walter demanded an answer. "Who the hell are they?"
"That's no MiG," Carol said next.
"Those are the bad guys. Fly faster!"
Carol boosted the engine and their ship flew faster.
"Mum, what do you mean by 'bad guys'?" Walter asked.
"I'll explain later!"
"What the hell do they want from us?" Carol hissed.
"My work. I never should have dragged you guys into this,"
"Mother, what is going on?" Walter's head was filling up with more questions by the minute.
"I promise you I will tell you everything Wally but right now we need to get out of here,"
"You got it mum. Carol, punch it!"
"I'm going as fast as I can," his best childhood friend complained. She made the ship loop upwards and backwards, so they were right behind the strange space ship that had been chasing them.
"I'm on guns," Pulling the trigger, Walter fired at the ship but it kept dodging. "I can't get a hit," Just then green blasts came firing back at them. "Are you kidding me?"
"That is so unpredictable!" his mother agreed.
"Hold on!" Carol made the ship swerve from side to side but suddenly one of the blasts shot the left wing of the plane. "We're hit! We're going down!"
The ship plummeted towards the earth below. Carol pulled the injector seat leaver but the windshield over their heads just catapulted up into the sky.
"Shit!" Walter cursed. His fear increased as they plunged nearer and nearer a coastline. "Carol!"
Gritting her teeth, Carol pulled the lever to straighten the craft. Just then crash!
They went flying through trees then splashed through water before crashing against through a shore of sand and rocks.
Carol and Walter took a moment to take in deep breaths. What they had just experienced was more fun than they ever wanted to have again.
"Carrie!" Joel's voice rung through the radio. "Are you okay?"
"Walter! Do any of you guys copy?!" Maria screamed through the com as well.
"We're alive. Copy," Carol reported. "We hit ground,"
"Just send us your coordinates!"
"Sending them now!" Walter typed and sent off their location.
"Help is on the way guys!" Maria said.
Walter unbuckled himself and lifted himself out. "Mum? Mum?!" His mother was bruised and quite exhausted. He pulled her helmet off. "Mum…oh my god..." He touched the side of her head. She was bleeding but the blood was…
"Blue?" Carol breathed out as she came to help Walter. "Your blood is blue?"
"Just get me out. Please..." Wendy begged.
Walter desperately helped his mother out with Carol's help. The moment her feet touched the sand, Wendy collapsed. "I gotta destroy it before they get here,"
"Mum…" Walter pulled his injured mother's head onto his lap. "What is going on? Who were these guys?"
Wendy looked up into her son's eyes and saw demanding. "It's time I told you something I should have told you and Vers before. Remember what I told you guys about our work? What it's for?"
Vers nodded. "Yeah? To end all wars?"
"It's…bigger than that," Wendy panted. "There's something you need to know Wally. That you both…" she coughed. "Need to know,"
Walter and Carol listened intently.
"My name is not Wendy Lawson. My real name is Mar-Vell, and I come from a planet called Hala,"
The duo couldn't believe what she was saying.
"No..." Walter shook his head. "That's not true. You're delusional,"
"Wally…you saw what happened. You see what's happening to me,"
Walter couldn't accept her words.
"Walter…I think…," Carol paused. She didn't want to say what she was trying to say but Walter saw in her eyes that her words were true.
"I am Kree Walter," Wendy said. "Now listen very carefully…I spent half my life fighting a shameful war. A war you were born into. You are Kree too,"
"No…" Walter tried to deny everything she was saying. "It's not true,'
"I'm sorry…but it is. That's why I couldn't let you participate in sports or anything violent throughout your childhood. You would have been found out,"
Walter didn't want to believe it. Seeing a sharp piece of a dog tag in the sand, he grabbed it and sliced his hand much to Carol's shock.
Walter's irises enlarged when he saw his blood was blue. HE was shocked. He felt his whole world turning upside down. He began to cry. He felt his whole life had been a lie. "Why didn't you tell me the truth?"
"I kept it from you so – you would be protected. I left Hala…and raised you here…because – so – that - you wouldn't grow up to be a monster – like him,"
"Him?" Walter asked breathlessly.
"Your – your father," weak lips gave out.
Once again Walter's mind was flipping and flopping up in shock.
"You said he died when I was little,"
"I'm sorry. I didn't have a choice. When…you were born…I realised how much I didn't want you to be a monster…like him. I took you here to protect you. Now you and Carol must…skedaddle before you give me any more regrets. Just remember the coordinates, okay? You gotta save them without me.
"Save who?" Carol asked. "Who are you talking about?"
Now I gotta…" Wendy pulled out a gun from her coat. "I gotta blow this up before they find it. And Walter…you must get out of here. I've protected you for years…so you didn't end up like him," She aimed at the engine.
Suddenly, a bullet came out of nowhere and shot Wendy right in the chest.
"Mother!" screamed her son.
Wendy fell back on the sand.
"Mother?" Walter's eyes started spilling as he touched her face. "Mother! Mother! No!" He begged her to wake up but she was dead. "No…" his voice turned hoarse. He cradled her head, crying.
Carol hugged him with tears. "I'm so sorry,"
Walter wanted to move but he couldn't do anything.
They heard a gun cocking again.
Grabbing the gun, Carol pointed it in the direction where the shot had come from. Walter stood his ground too in tears. From the smoke a few yards away, they saw a figure approaching. He was slim and tall. As he came nearer, the smoke cleared around him and they saw a tall man with a well-shaved heard and a face with no bristles. His eyes were blue and dark. He wore a green and black space suit with a star symbol on the front.
"Well…well…" his eyes were focused on Walter. "Look at you,"
"What do you want?!" Carol shouted, moving closer to her best friend.
"We have no intention of hurting you!"
"You shot my mother!" Walter took the gun from Carol and pointed it. "Give me one good reason why I shouldn't shoot you right now!"
His mother's killer wasn't even the slightest bit scared. "I've searched 25 years for you. You've no idea how many planets I had to scour…how many galaxies it took…to find you. But now look at you. All grown up,"
Walter kept his gun raised.
"Who are you?" Carol demanded. "What do you want from Walter?"
"Excuse…me miss…this is a family conversation,"
As he spoke those words, Walter's lips were parting.
"I have to admit…I was expecting a more shocked reaction…more than what your mother had already given you,"
Walter was shocked. This was his father? "No," he shook his head, pressing his lips together again. "You're not..."
"I don't wanna hurt you,"
"Your shooting and your killing speaks otherwise!" Carol spat back. "No matter who you think you are…you are not taking Walter. Not from me,"
"Look miss…just tell me where the energy core is. I'll take it. And my son. And I'll leave your planet in peace,"
"Pararescue's on the way. You have two minutes until you're surrounded," Carol warned.
"Then I see no reason to prolong this conversation," Yon-Rogg turned back again to the boy who was pointing his gun at him though still hesitating to pull the trigger. "Why don't we make this easy? Come with me, back to your real home, your real people…and your lady friend here can live,"
"You killed my mother. You are not killing Carol. Not while I draw breath,"
"Very well," Yon-Rogg pulled out his gun and aimed it at Carol.
"Wait!" Walter stopped him. "I'll come with you!"
Yon-Rogg smirked.
"No," Carol breathed in fear.
"Just leave Carol and this planet in peace,"
Walter stood up, holding his hands. "And I'll show you the core too. Just give me your word you won't hurt Carol,"
"Walter don't!" Carol begged. "Please…" she made her turn to him. "Don't...please,'
"It's okay Carol," Walter said despondently, turning to her whilst keep one arm stretched out with the gun. "It's okay. I'm doing this for you. You've no idea how much you mean to me," And with that, he planted a kiss on her lips. She didn't pull back nor dug into it. She just stood still. He pulled back and with a sad smile, pushed a hair strand behind her ears.
He turned back to Yon-Rogg who remained where he smirked more arrogantly. "Where is it?"
Walter tilted his head. "Right there," he eyed the core of bright blue energy inside the front of the ship that had survived the wreck. Just then he pointed his gun right at the engine.
"No!" his father shouted.
"Do it!" Carol urged.
Pulling the trigger, Walter fired right at the engine. The moment he did, a huge burst of blue energy erupted. Time slowed down. The trees and the sand and
the water around everyone began shaking. Walter and Carol were thrown by the force. They felt energy flying into their bodies through their hairs, their fingertips, their eyes.
The next thing they felt were their heads crashing against a bed of sand. Darkness engulfed their visions.
Yon-Rogg stood up coughing, bruised from the powerful voice. He looked at the ship. The engine had been destroyed. He growled. He cursed. Just then he saw the two pilots collapsed against the sand, blimps of energy were flying around them.
He glanced at them carefully, eying Walter the most. He knew exactly what had happened to them.
"Your son and his friend still live. Permission to shoot the girl," Minn-Erva requested behind him.
"Hold your fire," he raised a hand. He stood up and he raised a hand. He walked towards the unconscious pair very slowly, sheathing his gun in its hoister. He bent down to Walter's side. He stroked his face. He had finally found what he had been searching for.
"There's nothing left," his accomplice stated. "The core's been destroyed,"
Yon-Rogg noticed something sticking out of the sand. It was a torn piece of metal. He picked it up. Vers was inscribed on the front. He looked back at his son and Carol. "They absorbed its power. We're taking both of the,"
"Why her? We found your son. We don't need her,"
"Yeah we do," Yon-Rogg knelt down again beside Walter. "And this time…I will not let him out of my sight,"
Ver's eyes were flooding with tears. She heard deep breathing. She turned and saw Yorgoth's slouched body as he was in deep depression from everything they had just watched.
"Hey, are you okay?"
"No. I am not okay," Walter bluntly answered. Abruptly he stood up and he stomped out of the hut and onto the grass. He couldn't take it anymore. "It was him…" he breathed hoarsely. "All…this…time…he was my father. He was my FATHER!" he shouted up to the sky.
Vers walked gently out after him, breathing heavily too. "He lied to us," she turned to her brother, Maria, Nick and Talos who had followed them. "Everything we knew was a lie!"
"There are no words to say how sorry I am for what you two have been through," Joel spoke despondently.
"I can't believe our mentor is actually a murdering maniac who killed my mother. Not to mention he's actually my father!" Yorgoth turned to everyone with grief and anger written over his face. "My father who murdered my mother!"
"Now…you understand," Talos said.
"What do you understand now?!" Vers demanded.
"Yon-Rogg killed Mar-vell. His wife who bore him his son, his son who he spent twenty-five years searching for. She found out that she was on the wrong side of an unjust war,"
"'An unjust war'?" Walter marched up on Talos with a furious face. "That's all you can say?! Your people are terrorists. We saw what you guys did to Torfa. You killed innocent people!"
"That was the work of your father and the Accuser!"
"Do not call him my father!"
"My people lived as refugees on Torfa. We were homeless, ever since we resisted Kree rule…and they destroyed our planet,"
Yorgoth and Vers couldn't believe what they were hearing.
"The handful of us who are left will be slaughtered next unless you two help me finish what Mar-Vell started. The core that she found would have powered a light speed ship capable of carrying us to safety. To a new home where the Kree couldn't reach us,"
"Lawson always told us that our work at Pegasus wasn't to fight wars but to end them," Maria informed.
"She wanted you Walter to help us find the core. She chose you Carol as well,"
"But the core was destroyed," Yorgoth said. "I did it,"
"You destroyed the engine. The core that powered it is in a remote location. If you two help us decode those coordinates, we can find it,"
"How are we supposed to trust you?" Yorgoth questioned. After what he had experienced, he felt he was no longer capable of trusting anyone except his closest loved ones.
"Walter…I gave your mother my word…that if anything were to happen to her…I would protect you. I spend the next six years trying to track you down. Your mother loved you so much. So much so that she wanted to raise you to be a better being than your father,"
Walter saw the deep truth in Talos's eyes. "But I did. Everything she did for me…was for nothing!"
"It wasn't for nothing. She kept you safe as long as she could. We lost everything to the Kree. You two aren't like them,"
"You don't know us," Carol spat.
"We don't even know who we are! I don't even know who I am anymore!" roared Walter. He stomped off, turning his back to everyone.
Vers hung her head down in tears.
"I know exactly who you are," her brother spoke up.
Vers looked at him as he walked forward with Maria.
"You are Carol Danvers, my sister. And Maria's best friend. And Walter's too. You're the girl who always fights, who never ever gives up no matter what the world throws at her. She has always risked her life to do the right thing,"
"You are my best friend who supported me as a mother ad a pilot ad who gave me my one true love," Maria smiled at Joel next to her.
"Walter…" Joel addressed Yorgoth again. "You are Walter Lawson…the bravest, most badass guy who ever lived. You're kind. And brave. And so compassionate. Just like your mother. You are nothing compared to that monster of a man who killed her. You're the best friend we've ever had,"
Walter turned to them, seeing nothing but love and true meaning in their wet eyes.
"You both are powerful people. The most powerful people who ever, way before you could shoot energy out those fists," Maria finished.
Their words seemed to empower both Yorgoth and Vers with confidence. Faith. Hope. Their eyes wetted and the first thing Vers did was throw her arms around her brother who warmly hugged her back and kissed her cheek.
Maria hugged Yorgoth and he cried out happily, suppressing all the anger, all the pain from the revelation he had just found out.
Joel then gave Yorgoth a tight hug and Maria gave Vers one. They all then gathered into one giant group hug.
Behind them, Nick watched happily.
