This Idiot Burned Down the Christmas Tree

Kara was a danger to herself when she didn't have her powers, but she could be a danger to others when she did. And she wasn't just talking about her strength, or the dangers that her alter ego brought.

No, the dangers were when she was being just Kara.

Fourth of July

"It scared me the first few times," Kara said, looking up at the sky. She could smell the burgers J'onn was making. She could hear the chatter of her friends around the yard. She turned to look at Lena, who was just watching her. The two were laying on the grass, side by side. (Lena was reluctant at first, but Kara's pout convinced her.)

"The sounds?"

"When my parents were putting me in the pod, all I heard about was the explosions. And the first time I heard the fireworks, I felt like I was back in Krypton. I had a panic attack. It was the first time Alex saw me as a damaged girl, not just an alien ruining her family," Kara said, looking at Lena, a soft smile on her face. "Popcorn had the same effect. I hid under the table and Alex just sat with me and we ate popcorn."

"What changed for you?" Lena asked, her voice soft, soothing Kara from within.

Kara smiled. "Alex let me light up my first firework. Knowing that I set it off helped me rationalize it. It was a journey, but I got through it. Eliza also made ear buds to block out the sound if it gets too much." She reached into her pocket and took them out, showing it to Lena.

"Burgers!"

Kara turned her head, her eyes wide. She quickly stood up and pulled Lena up. The two rushed to J'onn, laughing. Kara grabbed her plate and J'onn placed four burgers on the plate with a head shake.

"Leave some for us!" Alex said, glaring at the older girl.

Kara smirked at Alex. "J'onn loves me more."

Alex narrowed her eyes. She was about to grab one of Kara's burgers, but the Kryptonian licked the burger Alex was reaching for.

"Ew!"

Kara tossed her head back and laughed. She sat at the table and waited for everyone to sit down before trying to shove the burger into her mouth. Lena rolled her eyes, but Kara just beamed.

"Are we setting any fireworks?" Nia asked, looking at the adults in the group. (Everyone except Kara, who started to choke on her burger. Brainy started to slap her back.)

"J'onn bought some really cool ones," Alex responded, shooting Kara a glare.

Kara inhaled deeply, before she continued to eat happily. She loved J'onn's cooking. It was great. She hummed to herself while she took another bite.

"The children aren't allowed to play with the fireworks without supervision," Kelly said, a teasing smile on her face.

"Who are the children?" Brainy asked, a frown on his face.

"Kara-"

"Wha?"

"-Alex-"

"Hey!"

"-Nia-"

"Fair enough. I don't trust myself with it either."

"-and Brainy."

The Curon frowned, a confused look on his face. "Why me?"

"I know you're responsible, but I don't want you to accidentally burn your face," Kelly said, a smile on her face.

Brainy nodded. "Seems reasonable."

Kara shoved the last of her burger into her mouth and grinned. "Done."

"You have to wait for the rest of us," Lena told her, her burger half finished. Kara pouted and sat back, pouting.

Kara had to wait thirty minutes until everyone was done before they could move on to the fireworks. Kelly, J'onn and Lena all watched the other four as they started to light up the fireworks. (Although J'onn was standing away from the fires.)

Brainy and Alex needed an eye, but were able to set them off themselves. Kara and Nia needed more supervision.

Nia was jumpy as she turned the lighter one, while Kara sped through it with her speed and heat vision. Lena kept telling her to slow down.

(Lena took her eyes off her girlfriend for one second to talk mechanics with Brainy, just one second.)

Kara stood in the middle of four fireworks, standing too close to them. She was so distracted by the light show, she didn't feel the fire creep up her pants.

"Kara!" Lena shouted, causing Nia to jump and change the aim of her firework.

Kara was slow to respond, and the firework hit her face. Everyone jumped out of the way when it exploded. Kara barely felt the heat as her clothing burned. Taking a deep breath, she blew the fire out. Once it was put out, Kara looked up with a grin.

Only for it to fall off.

She looked up to see Brainy and Nia trying to put out the fire on the table. Kelly and Lena were trying to put the fire on Alex's leg. And J'onn had disappeared.

It took seconds for Kara to put out all the fires and give everyone a sheepish smile. "Oops?"

Thanksgiving

Kara leaned back while Lena prepped the turkey. Given the amount of people arriving, Lena wanted to host Thanksgiving dinner. Eliza and Kelly were going to arrive later that day to help finish off the dinner.

Kara's cooking left much to be desired. Lena had banned Kara from touching anything. She had finished setting up most of the silverware and the tablecloths. She was just watching Lena work, a smile on her face.

Lena looked back and smiled softly. "What?"

"I love you," Kara said, a grin on her face.

Lena winked at her. She went back to prepping the turkey.

"When is everyone getting here?" Lena asked, turning to her girlfriend.

Kara looked at her watch and opened her mouth to answer, when there was a knock on the front door. "Now."

Lena rolled her eyes. "Go greet them, I'll finish this off."

Kara gave her a salut and went to the front door. She grinned when she saw Nia and Brainy. "Come on in!"

"Greetings," Brainy said, a grin on his face. Kara just beamed. Brainy went straight to the drinks, while Nia sat down. Before Kara could close the door, J'onn and M'gann arrived.

"What is so great about this holiday?" M'gann asked when she and J'onn sat down. Kara left the living room as she heard Brainy start to recite the history. She sat down and watched as her girlfriend worked.

"Why aren't you with the others?" Lena asked, wiping her hands with a hand towel.

"Cause I want to be with you," Kara responded. Lena kissed Kara's lips and the Kryptonian pulled her closer.

"Gross, get out to the kitchen and let my mom and wife help," Alex said from the entrance. Kara let Lena go with an eye roll. Alex huffed and grabbed the back of Kara's outfit and pulled her out.

"You know I'm letting you drag me," Kara said, following her older sister.

"Yeah yeah," Alex muttered, letting Kara go and starting a conversation with J'onn. Nia was able to suck Kara in for a conversation.

-SG-

Eliza looked at the two women in front of her, a smile on her face. "I am glad my daughters have both of you in their lives. I know they hadn't had the best relationships, they were still trying to find out who they are. And after Mon-El and Maggie, they didn't think they were ever going to be happy again. And I want you two to know it means the world to me."

Lena rubbed her eyes, a smile on her face. "She saved me, in many ways."

Eliza shook her head. "You saved her. Both of you saved them."

Eliza pulled the two women in for a hug, and they leaned into it.

"Lena! I'm starving!" Kara shouted, walking into the room. She froze when she saw the three women. She smiled softly, before turning to her girlfriend. "I'm hungry."

"Heat up the turkey, I'm going to go change," Lena told her, giving her a kiss. Kara gave her a nod, and Eliza and Kelly went to set the table.

Kara faced the turkey. Kara felt her eyes heat up. She stared at the turkey and within seconds she started to heat it up. She hummed as she concentrated, but that was quickly disrupted.

"What are you doing?!"

Kara accidentally turned up the heat and the turkey caught fire. "Oh my god."

Nia let out a shriek, while Kara used her freeze breath.

When Lena rushed in, she came face to face with a frozen turkey. The look on her face made Kara nervous.

"Lee?"

"Go to the living room," Lena said, her voice hard.

"I-I-"

"Go."

Kara and Nia sped walked to the living room, where the other visitors were waiting.

"What happened?" Alex asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Kara froze the turkey," Nia said, shrugging.

"After you made me burn it!"

Kelly and Eliza both rushed to the kitchen. Kara looked at the other people in the living room. "D-do you guys know where I can find another one?"

"I'll start making calls," Alex said, her voice filled with exhaustion.

Kara dropped the turkey on her way back, but was able to get a third.

(Kara made it up to Lena that night.)

Christmas

"You know, I can have this done in seconds," Kara said, as she hung a pair of ornament boots.

Lena shook her head with a smile. "I know. I just want to experience this with you. I never got to do this when I was younger."

Kara looked at Lena with soft eyes. She took a step forward and grabbed Lena's hands, pulling her close. "I love you," Kara whispered, "and I want to make sure this day is special for you."

Lena placed her hand on Kara's cheek. "Do you remember Christmas two years ago?"

The blond shook her head, a frown on her face.

"You were in a coma. Sometimes, when I think of Christmas, I don't just think about the Luthors, but also that time without you. The fact that you could have died, and I wouldn't have known. The fact that you did die-"

"Hey, that's in the past. I'm here, I'm alive," Kara whispered, grabbing Lena's hand and placing it on her chest. Lena closed her eyes, feeling Kara's heart beat against her palm.

"You're here, you're alive," Lena repeated, nodding her head. She looked up at Kara, who was just smiling down at her.

"You know the best part of Christmas?"

"The presents?"

"The mistletoes," Kara answered, moving closer to Lena, their lips almost touching.

Lena smirked. "It seems we are not under one." She moved away and laughed at Kara's pout.

Lena was about to walk away when Kara pulled her back, connecting their lips. Kara placed her hands on Lena's face, pulling her close. Lena moved her hands and placed them on Kara's neck, holding her close.

Lena pulled away, needing oxygen to fill her lungs again. She smiled fondly at Kara, who gave her one last peck. She turned back to the tree and continued to hang the decorations.

-SG-

"And done with this part," Kara said, taking a step back. The two women looked at their work.

"Turn it on," Lena ordered, a smile on her face.

Kara gave her a salute and walked up the tree and turned on the plug. She took a step forward, when she heard Lena.

"Watch out!"

Kara looked down to see the wires wrapped around her ankles. Kara's brain decided to malfunction and she stumbled, before landing on something not soft.

-SG-

Alex walked into the house, Lena and Kara were hosting Christmas in their home. She blinked, seeing the Christmas tree in the corner of the room. She looked at Lena, who seemed to be three drinks in.

"What happened there?" Alex asked, while Kelly, Eliza and J'onn walked in behind her.

Lena downed her drink, before letting out a little sigh.

"Your sister happened," Lena responded, pouring herself more scotch.

Kara walked by with an armful of presents. When she saw the visitors, she beamed.

"Hey guys!" Kara placed the present on the ground and hugged the newcomers. Lena tossed her head back as she drank the last bit of her scotch. She placed her glass down and walked up to the group. She gave Eliza a hug.

"If you ever need a babysitter," Eliza said, getting laughter from Lena.

"I am not that bad!"

"You broke your arm falling down the stairs."

"You tripped on a pebble and broke your ankle."

"You turned into a child."

"You stabbed yourself."

"You dropped soup on yourself."

"You-"

"I get it!" Kara interrupted, a blush on her cheek.

"So what did you do to that tree?" Alex asked, pointing to the Christmas that was snapped in half.

Kara looked to the ground and muttered her answer.

"I didn't hear that," Alex teased, a grin on her face. She stepped closer to Kara, who just glared at her.

"I fell on the Christmas tree," Kara answered, looking like an angry puppy.

Alex started to laugh. J'onn let out a chuckle, Kelly and Eliza tried to stifle their laughter, and Lena just rubbed Kara's arm.

Kara looked at Lena with a pout on her face. She leaned over and gave Kara a gentle kiss. "I like the tree like that. New memories."

Kara just gave her a half smile, giving her a kiss.

-SG-

The group all sat around the living room, passing out presents, smiles on their faces.

Alex looked at the tree and giggled. Kelly rolled her eyes and rubbed her wife's back.

"Has Kara destroyed Christmas trees before?" Kelly asked, looking at Eliza, knowing she would give an honest answer.

Eliza let out a small chuckle. "Yes. She let a family of Chipmunks live in one her first year. She froze a few, and set another few on fire."

Kara let out a sigh. "I am never living this down, am I?"

The group laughed. "I don't think you are going to be allowed near trees again."

Kara just pouted, before smiling at the gifts she received.

New Years

Superfriends had discovered an alien champagne that could get Kara drunk. They were excited to try it on New Years, so everyone could relax. J'onn and M'gann opted out, planning to keep an eye on National City while the others took a break.

Kara stumbled, and Nia laughed, watching as a chair broke in Kara's grip

"Careful there," Lena said, helping Kara sit down.

Kara giggled. "You're so pretty."

Lena smiled, giving Kara a gentle kiss. "Drink water please."

"Okay," Kara said, nodding slowly. She looked at the television, to see the New Years Event playing. She watched as Lena walked back to her and placed a glass of water in her hand. Kara looked at it with a frown. Lena let out a small laugh, and brought the cup up to Kara's lips and had her drink it. "I love you."

Lena smiled fondly. "I love you too. Now please sober up a bit so you can be my New Year's kiss."

Kara gave her a slow nod. She sipped the water, looking up at Lena. "You're pretty," she slurred, drinking the water.

"You have an hour," Lena said, walking away and leaving Kara alone with her glass of water.

-SG-

Nia never thought she'd be taking shots with Supergirl, what with her tolerance to alcohol.

She watched as Kara moaned, placing her head on the table.

"Hey, you okay?"

"Sp'n," Kara slurred, gripping the table hard enough to leave her handprint.

Nia let out a small chuckle. "I guess you have such a low tolerance."

"L'na kill'm," she slurred, raising her head and squinting her eyes. "'M s'pose ta stawp."

Nia gave Kara a pat on the back and helped her lie on the couch. She made sure Kara was on her side in case she got sick. She watched as Kara's eyes slowly slipped closed. With a small chuckle, she walked to Brainy, knowing the count down was going to start soon.

-SG-

"Wake up," she heard Alex mutter, a hand on her shoulder. She groaned, opening her eyes. She felt the room spin, but slowly sat up.

"'M up," she muttered, rubbing her eyes.

"Hurry, the countdown is gonna start and this is your first New Years kiss," Alex whispered, and Kara nodded, her own eyes shutting. "No, wake up!"

Kara nodded, standing up. She listened for Lena's heart beat and stumbled towards her, her vision dark.

"There you are," she heard Lena say, but Kara couldn't see her. She frowned, ready to tell her she couldn't see. But she heard the countdown start.

"Ten!"

Kara hummed, trying to get the world to stop spinning.

"Nine!"

Lena grabbed Kara's hands and pulled her closer. "Open your eyes darling."

"Eight!"

"Th're are," she slurred, hoping she was looking at Lena.

"Seven!"

Her girlfriend chuckled and placed her hands on Kara's cheeks.

"Six!"

"I love you," Lena whispered, "even if you are drunk right now."

"Five!"

"Love ya too," Kara muttered, leaning closer to Lena.

"Four!"

"Three!"

"Two!"

"One!"

Kara quickly moved to kiss her girlfriend, only to stop when she heard a scream of pain. She frowned, her vision dark. She stumbled, taking a short step back.

"Oh my god!" she heard Alex shout and she was shoved out of the way.

"Kara, open your eyes," she heard Nia tell her, but Kara frowned.

"They're not?" she slurred, reaching up to touch her eyes.

"No, c'mon Kara, Lena needs you to open your eyes."

Slowly, she opened her eyes, blinking at the brightness. She frowned, and looked around, before seeing Lena's face. Her eyes widened, and she felt herself sober up a little.

"Wh-what happened?" she asked, stumbling a little to walk towards Lena.

"You broke my nose!" Lena shouted, her face covered in blood.

"Alright, let's get you to the hospital," Alex whispered, Kelly quickly rushed to get their things. "Nia, you and Brainy take care of Kara."

"I, I can go too," Kara said, shaking her head from the fog in her head. "I, I'm good."

"You are still drunk. Kelly here is sober."

"Still bleeding here," Lena said, her voice muffled.

Alex and Kelly helped Lena out the room, while Nia and Brainy helped Kara sit down.

"I, I'm sorry," Kara muttered, tears in her eyes.

Nia ran her hand through Kara's hair. "It's okay. Lena is going to be okay. The second you sober up, we'll go check up on her."

Kara gave her a snort nod.

-SG-

Lena walked into her penthouse, her nose wrapped. She was lucky it was a clean break, and it just had to be reset. Alex and Kelly drove her back home. Lena told them to go home, that there was nothing they could do. With final goodbyes, the married couple left.

Lena turned on the lights and smiled, seeing Brainy and Nia curled up on the couch. She walked to the bedroom and saw Kara asleep on the bed, her mouth half opened, drool covering the pillow. She had one shoe still on, and still in her outfit.

Lena walked up to the bed and sat down. She placed her hand on Kara's shoulder and the Kryptonian jolted awake. She looked over and saw Lena.

"Lena! Oh my god! I'm so sorry!"

The CEO smiled softly, not wanting to hurt her nose. "It's okay. I know it was an accident. just be more careful next time?"

Kara nodded. She bit her lip and looked at her hands. "I, I should have been better. I-" tears filled her eyes.

"Hey, accidents happen. I forgive you okay?"

Kara nodded, looking at Lena like a lost puppy. Lena placed her hand on Kara's cheek, making sure they kept eye contact. "I am not holding this against you. Don't beat yourself up over this, please."

"Okay," Kara whispered, laying back down. Lena knew the alien alcohol hadn't run it's course yet, and Kara was still feeling it's effects. But Kara fought against her drowsiness. "Do you need anything?"

Lena nodded her head. "Just hold me?"

Kara smiled softly. "Always." She scooted closer to Lena and waited for her girlfriend to lay down on her back before wrapping her arms around her. "I love you."

"And I love you."

Bonus

Alex walked into Kara's apartment and placed the bags of food on the island. She looked over to see Kara asleep on the couch, her arm over her eyes. She rolled her eyes, wondering what had happened that caused Kara to sleep out in the open.

Just then, Alex watched as Lena walked out of the bedroom. The CEO frowned when she saw Alex standing there. Alex smiled, before seeing the cast on Lena's arm. "What happened?"

Lena looked down at her hand and shook her head. "You don't want to know."

Alex frowned, just as Kara was waking up. The blond looked guilty when she realized what they were talking about.

"What did she do?"

Lena let out a small laugh. "Well, we were in bed and it got heated-"

"Nope! Forget I asked. I don't want to know," Alex said, shaking her head and putting her hands over her ears.

Kara walked up to Lena and Alex, with a small frown.

Lena smirked. Kara sighed, grabbing Lena's hand and kissing it.

Alex uncovered her ears and glared at her little sister.

"I could literally kill you right now. I'm serious. I know at least five good places to hide a body."
