The Plasma Blast
"And in the face of it...you...are...NOTHING."
Drago Bludvist pointed his bull hook at Hiccup and Toothless turned his head sharply, his eyes dilated to slits. Hiccup took a step back as Toothless began to advance on him.
"Uh, what did he just tell you?" asked Hiccup. Toothless ignored him and continued to walk toward Hiccup. The look in his eyes was unpromising. Hiccup suddenly felt scared. Terrified.
"T-Toothless, what are you doing?" Hiccup asked. "Stop, Bud!"
Toothless opened his mouth and the familiar sound of a charging plasma blast filled Hiccup's ears. Time seemed to slow as Hiccup backed into the block of ice that laid behind him. There was no escape. He was trapped.
"Toothless, snap out of it!" cried Hiccup. Toothless had his eyes locked on his target and the purple glow of plasma blast filled the Night Fury's mouth. Hiccup's eyes widened in terror.
"Toothless, no! No, STOP!" shouted Hiccup. He could hear the sound of footsteps approaching him, and could hear his name being yelled.
"No, no, no, TOOTHLESS!" yelled Hiccup. The Night Fury opened his mouth and Hiccup could hear something crashing to his side, he looked over and shouted, "NO!" to whoever was coming, but it was too late. Hiccup felt himself being shoved out of the way, and hit the hard, icy ground roughly.
He heard the sound of a plasma blast being fired.
The shout of his father and the worried cries of his mother.
Hiccup groaned and shook off the grip of unconsciousness that had almost caused him to black out. Hiccup stood up slowly and saw Toothless' eyes locked on where he once was. Hiccup looked to where Toothless was staring and gasped.
"No, no, no," mumbled Hiccup. He rushed over to see who saved him and found that it wasn't his father, his mother, or Astrid who had saved his life.
No. It was Gobber.
Stoick and Valka rushed over and a look of pain flashed on Stoick's face at the sight of his best friend lying motionless on the snowy ground. Hiccup turned to his father, who had removed the ice that laid on top of Gobber's chest and placed a hand over his heart.
There wasn't a beat.
Valka placed a hand over her mouth, tears welling up in her eyes and Stoick removed his helmet. Hiccup shook his head in disbelief.
"No...no…" he whispered. He buried his head in his hands, tears falling down his face. Stoick wrapped an arm around him and Hiccup continued to shake his head.
This couldn't be happening. Gobber couldn't be gone. The blacksmith had taught him so much ever since he came to work as his apprentice. He was like a second father to Hiccup. And the thought of him being gone was something that Hiccup never would have thought he would have to face.
Toothless snapped out of the mind control and looked at his distressed rider. He walked up slowly and noticed Gobber lying on the ground. Toothless crooned softly and nudged the blacksmith's hand. It fell back down like a stone.
Toothless sniffed him and the scent—the scent that he hated the most—of lifelessness filled his nostrils. Toothless warbled sadly and nudged Gobber again, only to be shoved by Hiccup.
Toothless looked up, confused. He warbled and tried to step toward him again, but Hiccup pushed away.
"No! Stay away from him!" shouted Hiccup. Stoick, Valka, and the Dragon Riders were shocked.
"Go on! Get out of here!" yelled Hiccup. Toothless backed away, sending Hiccup on last dejected look, and ran off.
And as Hiccup watched Toothless run away, thousands of memories of him and Gobber washed through his mind. He let out a choked sob and squeezed his eyes shut. All sounds were blocked out. Everything slowed.
Gobber was gone. He was really gone.
Author's Note: So...um...yeah...I just did that. =(
I was reading through the HTTYD wiki one day and I stumbled across a fact that said Gobber would have been the one shot by the plasma blast, but then they changed it to Stoick because it would have made the scene more emotional (I think that's what it said). And since we have fanfiction, I decided to write a what-if if it was Gobber who was hit by the plasma blast. This is my first try at an angst/tragedy story, and I think I did pretty good, but there's always room for improvement. =)
Until the next story!
