Holy crap, these past couple of weeks have been crazy. Got my second dose of the vaccine, school is out for the summer(thank god), and my birthday happened. Hopefully now that everything is over I can focus more on these fictions. And the poll is now over as well! The winner was Saber, so let's see what happens. And an fyi, I am in the process of making a new story. It should be out in a couple of days, so if you're interested keep an eye out. Sorry for the mini rant, now onto the new chapter!
"Is your dream truly to become a Hero of Justice?"
- Chapter 11
"W-What? I'm afraid I don't know what you mean Goku."
"Shirou, 10 years ago, you were a part of something known as the Great Fuyuki Fire were you not?"
Shirou was dumbfounded. He had never told Goku about his past. Not to mention that, as he wasn't here, he shouldn't even know what that fire was. Let alone the fact that he was a part of it. That being the case, Shirou began to get skeptical. "How do you know that? Not even Tohsaka knows that I was a part of that. The only one who knows is Saber, and I doubt she would tell you about my past."
"I'm going to assume that was a yes. Now, before I tell you how I got hold of that information, I'd like to show you something."
And just like with Rin, Goku held out his hand and put it on Shirou's head.
"Um, Goku, What are you-"
-Flashback-
"You filthy MONKEY!"
"Goku move!"
"GOKUUU- ARGH!"
"I am begging you Kakarot… please… defeat Frieza. He must die by a… Saiyan's hands…"
-Flashback end-
"-Inhale!- What did- What did you just show me?"
"That was part of my own past Shirou. You saw it right, the lives of everyone close to me die?"
"That doesn't explain why you showed it to me, Goku?!"
"Because I wasn't strong enough to save them, that's why."
"What?"
"I had spent a whole week preparing myself. I wore weighted clothes, increased the gravity to 100 times Earth's own gravity, but it still wasn't enough. You want to save everyone, from personal experience, it's not very likely."
"So what? You're telling me to give up on my dream? Cause that's never going to happen!"
"When did I say that? I'm not saying you should give up, I'm just saying trying to save everyone is not very likely. What you should be doing is getting stronger to protect the ones around you. I didn't get this strong because I wanted to, you know. Let me tell you something Shirou. Power comes in response to a need, not a desire. And you, Shirou, need to create that need."
"What? What does that even mean?"
"It'll come in due time. Now, we should begin our training session."
"Right. And thank you Goku, for taking me on as your student."
"Don't worry Shirou, I'll make sure you become someone strong enough to protect others without endangering yourself." The two soon started their training session, with Goku giving Shirou some slightly weighted versions of his normal clothing. But there was only one thing that came to Goku's mind. "Don't worry Shirou, I'll make sure you don't end up like him."
Emiya Household
"Alrighty then, I'll see you again for our next training session."
"Of course. Later, Goku."
After saying their goodbyes out front of Shirou's house, Goku quickly sped back to Rin so as to not worry her. But Shirou was quickly surprised when Goku's teachings were already working.
"Whoever's there, come out now."
"I'm surprised you could notice me, boy." A man suddenly materialized in front of him. He wore what looked to be a black sleeveless shirt covered by body armor, outlined by silver accents, a metal plate on his collar, and black pants that had two black straps on his thighs. He had another two strapped around his shins separate from each other. He has black metal plated shoes, which appear to be attached to his trousers, and a mysterious red shroud.
"Like I couldn't notice when someone has the intent to kill me. Now what do you want? You materialized like a servant, but I doubt you're an Assassin."
"Oh? So you learned enough to detect intent like that? And you know enough about what the classes are to make an assumption. I guess Goku isn't the only difference here."
"You know Goku?" Shirou asked with a look of bewilderment on his face.
"Correct. Although our first time meeting each other was a little bit unorthodox, we met nonetheless. Now, about that whole killing intent. I don't plan on killing you. At least not yet. You see, Goku and I made a deal, and I plan on withholding my side of the bargain."
"Since you're already telling me everything, might as well tell me your name too mister."
"Please, that would make things more complicated. And that's something I don't plan on doing. Don't worry though, you'll see me again. Whether you want to or not."
With that, the man vanished just like he had appeared. Not wanting to dawdle for too long, Shirou quickly made his way inside to prepare food for everyone there.
"Ah, Shirou. Saber wants to talk with you. She should be in the dojo right now."
"Ah ok. Thanks Fuji-nee. I hope this isn't about why I was gone all day."
Just as Taiga had said, Saber was in the dojo waiting for him. Upon locking eyes with each other, Shirou could already tell that she wasn't too pleased.
"Shirou… You gave me your word that you would return here before sunset."
"I'm sorry, and you have every right to be angry with me. But before you start to yell at me, can we discuss our strategy first?" He was only met with a nod. "There's a third master at school. So Tohsaka and I agreed to a truce while we try to figure out what the master's identity is. Are you opposed to working with Tohsaka, Saber? I know you don't really like Goku all that much."
"That's not it. I just wish you had consulted me before you made such an important decision. And about working with her and Goku, I feel it will benefit us more than it will them. Goku might be the strongest servant in this war. Working together is a big benefit for us. But more importantly, how do you know there's another master, Shirou?"
"Because… We were attacked by their servant."
Saber's eyes immediately widened. "What? Are you hurt anywhere? Do I need to apply first aid?" She started getting in Shirou's face without realizing it, causing Shirou to blush when her face was right in front of his.
"It-It's fine Saber. Honestly, if Goku hadn't made it in time, I don't think I'd be here right now. He blocked the enemy servants' attack from hitting me."
"Wait, were you with anyone at the time?"
"Yes, I was with Tohsaka. We heard a girl scream so we went to check it out. The girl's safe but-"
"Why would they target you?"
"Pardon?"
"If you were with Rin, they surely would've targeted her. Not only is she the better magus between you two, but getting rid of her would mean getting rid of Goku as well. And I'm certain that all the servants felt that massive amount of power last night. There's no doubt in my mind that it was Goku using his noble phantasm."
"Wait, are you trying to say the enemy master has some kind of grudge against me? That's ridiculous, I've never done anything to anybody. My dream is to help people, not hurt them."
"I understand that Shirou. But right now you are our best bet at finding out who this third master is."
"Hm, ok. I understand the situation. But Saber, there is one thing I want to ask you. You need the grail, right?"
"Yes."
"Do you mind if I ask why?"
"Did something happen earlier in the day that is making you ask this?"
"Yes. Goku told me something. He said that 'Power comes in response to need, not a desire.' He said that I would have to create that need. Do you understand what he meant by that?"
"Hm. I have to admit, those are some wise words. I don't think I can give you an answer Shirou, as it was intended for you and not me. But if I had to guess what it means, it probably means you have to find something worthy. Similar to how I took up Excalibur to protect my kingdom."
"I have to find something worth protecting then. I guess it'll come to me in time then huh?"
"Indeed. But for now…" Saber proceeds to get up from the floor, holding a shinai in her hands. "… I believe that we should start our own training session. You were training with Goku earlier, no?"
"How could you tell?" Shirou for his part also got up from the floor.
"Well, you seemed a bit fatigued when you came in. But now that you've had some time to rest, I'd like to see how good you are when it comes to sword fighting." Saber wore a small smirk on her face.
Shirou was happy that she was smiling, but his instincts were telling him the opposite. "Uh oh."
Homurahara School
"Hey Emiya!"
"-sigh- Today's going to be a long day. What do you want Shinji?"
"Did you hear about Mitsuzuri? I just heard at the dojo this morning myself. She was found in New Fuyuki. And in a back alley no less. I heard her eyes were glazed and her uniform was in tatters."
Shirou grew tense at the sudden news.
"I don't know what happened, but how did a normal girl like her end up in a back alley like that? As one of her friends, I'm dying to know-"
"Shinji!" Shirou walked up to Shinji, getting right in his face.
"Woah, talk about scary. I'm just kidding. It's only a rumor anyway, right? But after yesterday, she's become a real celebrity amongst the first-years."
"You were the last person to see Ayako, weren't you?"
"Yeah, but all we did was make idle chit chat. Don't start speculating, Emiya. If you throw around false accusations, you'll regret it."
School Library
"How do you identify a master?"
"Yeah. If you were near a master, would you know?"
"I suppose you could, but only if they didn't make any effort to conceal themselves. A master is a mage, so if you follow their mana, you'll be able to locate them. But that alone would only give you possible suspects."
"Wait."
"Hm? What is it, Emiya?"
"There's something here." Shirou put his hand on the books on the bookshelf next to them and muttered something, "Trace on." He began scanning the bookshelf for anything that seemed amiss. And as he thought, he found something that wasn't meant to be there. He started pulling some books off the shelf, revealing the strange sigil that was under them.
"Would you look at that?" Rin had poked her head in front of the space to spot what Shirou had been looking for. "You know, Emiya. For a guy with no sensitivity to a living thing's mana, you can really sense when a place has something abnormal." With that said, Rin began to deactivate the sigil before it could be activated.
"Was that meant to be a compliment? You didn't think I was a mage either, remember? Why was that?"
"What? You want me to spell it out for you?"
"No, forget it. I think I can guess."
"Good."
A couple of minutes later
"That should be the last of the active sigils."
"Were you able to deactivate the bounded field?"
"No, the field itself is already in place, all I did was weaken its potency. But anyone who would put up a field like this isn't going to stand by and let others interfere. If you want my honest opinion, they'll show themselves soon, perhaps even tomorrow."
"Is that so?"
Another couple of minutes later
"I wonder what I should do now? Tohsaka already left, I could probably go get some food for dinner."
"Heading home late, aren't we Emiya? After all that sigil erasing?"
"What was that?"
"You know, the bounded field you've been systematically erasing is an insurance policy I set up for myself."
"I knew it. Shinji, you're…"
"Don't be so stiff, Emiya. Just like you, I don't have any mana, but they made me a master anyway.'
"So what's the story with that field?"
"I already told you, it's just insurance."
"Then are you the one who attacked that other student yesterday?"
"I didn't have a choice back then. My servant did it on her own. Come on Emiya, you have to believe me. I don't want to fight anyone."
"Hmm, fine. I'll be taking my leave then." Shirou only got one step in before he was stopped.
"Just one second, Emiya! Will you team up with me? We, the Matous, used to be a mage family."
"The Matous?"
"Well, it's no real surprise that you wouldn't know that, since you aren't a proper mage. If you don't believe me, then go ask Tohsaka."
"Shinji, does Sakura know about you?"
"Mage families only pass down their secret arts to their eldest son. As if anyone would teach magic to that dunce of a girl. So, what do you say? Will you join me?"
"If you aren't going to do anything, then I have no reason to work with you." Shirou began walking away again.
"Eh, you aren't going to work with me? Emiya, you're not going to actually try to win right?"
Shirou stopped.
I see… If so, I can't leave my sister in the home of an enemy mage taking part in this ritual."
"Fine, then I'll go tell her myself."
"Okay. It's nice that you're such a caring senpai to her. What we just discussed is a secret between you and me, got it. I came clean out of respect for our friendship."
"Sure, I'll keep quiet."
End of the eleventh chapter
Ok, I'll take the advice of people in the reviews and only put the character sheet in chapters I deem necessary. Let me know if you guys like this change or not.
