I wanted to write Raeda as young adults, but admittedly I couldn't figure out a place in time when this might take place. So… I'm placing it in that time when Raine and Eda were young adults and played music on that hill.

Just Hold On a Little Longer

(Raeda Week 2021 Day 2: Love Song)

There was a lot of work applying for the Bard Coven. Application papers and half-practiced music sheets littered the bedroom floor. The only candlelight that battled the glow of the late-night moonlight was the tiny candle on top of Raine's small desk. Everything in the miniscule bedroom was a giant sign that Raine had more important things to take care of.

With gentle care, their aching fingers drew their bow across the violin strings.

Magic flooded out from their sock-covered feet. Closed eyes stayed shut as a tired head breathed in time with the slow tune. The papers that had been on the floor lifted, floating in the airy emotional-driven enchantment. A sore voice, strained after too many hours of singing without break, echoed throughout the little room.

You've been in my memories since before we met.

Have I met you in another lifetime?

Because I could tell you just from the way we love,

That you are my soulmate and lifeline.

It was for Eda, and anything for Eda was worth anything the world threw at Raine.

You've given my heart a new beat to dance to, my love,

And life has never felt this real before.

Even if you were to leave me or laugh me off,

For you, darling, I would always come back for more.

Their notes hung over the air, mixing with the flickering candlelight. Raine breathed in, and Eda's image flashed in their mind's eye.

You once mentioned how silly you thought love songs were

With a face that clearly said otherwise.

My love, love songs were meant for you,

And with this, I hope to change your hesitant mind.

Red hair tied back in a wild ponytail. Nimble fingers that always played the lute like the world was Eda's own. A red dress that radiated chaos and warmth and mischief and safety and was the reason why Raine's favorite color in the world was the color of wildfire.

If the world were to turn its back on us,

If the world were to tear us apart for all time,

I would take on anything just to get the slightest glimpse

Of the smiling face that holds such power over this lovesick heart of mine.

Every moment with you

Is a moment when I know who I am and who I want to be.

I hadn't thought of weddings before you came into my life,

But now all of my dreams are of our special day of unity.

How could they capture every one of their feelings for Eda in a song? She was their best friend, their defender, their support, and most likely, the love of their life. Eda drew feelings up from Raine that the young bard had never felt before.

It was a near impossible task, but Eda could accomplish the impossible, so why couldn't they?

All they had to do was make the perfect love song.

Would you dance with me in the dark?

Would you join me in making this life of ours the fullest life we could ever live?

Would you be mine if I asked?

Would you stay just a little longer?

Their heart felt so full of love and anxious energy it felt close to bursting. And as the final verse of the song came, Raine imagined Eda in front of them, hanging onto their every word.

My love, this is my gift to you,

Along with this delicate heart of mine.

Even if we were not meant to be,

I would still love you for all of time…

So, what do you say, darling, would you be mine?

The song drew to a close, and the final high note reverberated in their ears.

Their tired eyes opened, and with a moment of thought, they muttered under their breath and raised their instrument back against the crook of their neck. The second-to-last verse needed revising, and Raine had no idea how to feel about the rhyming couplets ending the song.

They would make it perfect. Eda deserved it.

And as the night drew on, straying further into the early hours of the morning, Raine played on.

Song Inspo: "Just a Little Longer" by SHY Martin.

I tried to come up with some original song lyrics, though my poetry hasn't been good in years, so I hope it doesn't come off too cheesy. Nonetheless, this is the other story I wrote for Raeda Week 2021! I hope you all enjoyed, and thank you all so much for reading and supporting! :D
