A/N: Thank you for the great reviews. I hope this is living up to your expectations. I struggled a bit with this as I was grappling with getting Arizona from the wedding to NYC. I really wanted to see her process what April had said to her as well as get an idea of where Callie's brain was on this day. This is an especially long chapter. While I will try to do longer chapters, updates will probably be coming once a week now. Enjoy!
You know the deal. Everything is Shonda's. Everyone is Shonda's. Hell, even I grovel at her feet.
Holding up her phone to snap a picture of April and Matthew, Arizona saw a new message had just come through. Turning her phone so she could read it, seeing that it was from Callie, she couldn't help the smile that once again spread across her face as she read it. While she was being truthful when she told her friends she smiled whenever she got a text from Callie, she held back the fact that they had shared several conversations which caused a fluttering of butterflies in her abdomen, or the fact that they engaged in flirty banter more than once over the course of the past couple weeks. She'd be lying if she said it wasn't at least a little bit exciting, but she was still so confused. She couldn't fight the fear that bubbled up alongside the butterflies.
C: I can't wait to see you!
She wanted to fight the smile, she wanted to ignore the flutter of butterflies in her stomach at the sentiment. She wanted nothing more than to go unaffected by one Callie Torres. She recalled her earlier conversation with April. No one has ever hurt me like Callie has. I get it, I do, but no one has ever hurt Matthew like I did when I left him at the altar. Arizona looked up at her best friend as she kissed her new husband, the same man to whom she was referring earlier. The look in their eyes spoke of love, forgiveness, and hope for a better future. Neither held even a trace of the pain nor anger they once felt toward one another. There was no lingering bitterness for what could have been. She briefly thought back to the first time they were supposed to get married and remembered the look on Matthew's face as he watched April run off with Jackson. Her mind was suddenly flooded with flashes of the breakdown she had at her car with Callie as she was packing up the gifts. She stood crying, yelling at her wife because she was trying so desperately to fix things, to fix her, to fix their marriage after she…She let out a gasp as she recalled her earlier words. She closed her eyes as she remembered exactly why she and Callie had to fix anything at that point. Oh God! No one has ever hurt Callie like I have. We have hurt each other. I am not the only one who lost my wife. She lost me first! Looking up at the happy couple then back down at her phone and re-reading her most recent message, she realized at that moment, she could hold on to the pain of the past, or she could let it go like her ex-wife appeared to be doing. They had both hurt each other. They had both healed and grown. People change, ya know, and life…life changes us and our one job, really our only job is to stay open to possibilities. Right? It's not stupid. It's not a catastrophe that Callie's making you smile again. While it was true no one had hurt her like Callie has, no one has ever loved her like Callie has either. Deciding to open herself up to the possibility, she quickly typed out a reply.
Me: I can't wait either.
She then leaned down and placed her head next to her daughter's and snapped a selfie of the two of them. Hitting send, she glanced at the time and realized she needed to head to the airport. Just as she stood up, she felt her phone vibrate and opened the new message.
C: Wow! You…you both look beautiful Arizona.
Me: Yeah well, this dress is coming off ASAP.
C: Hmmm, now I really can't wait to see you ;)! Guess airport security would go quicker, though.
Feeling the rush of heat come to her cheeks at what her ex-wife was implying and thinking of a multitude of replies that would decidedly put them in the danger zone, the blonde settled for safety and quickly tapped out a reply.
Me: LOL, not sure anyone wants to see that!
C: … … …
Feeling the blush creep up her face once again, she decided to leave the conversation at that and tucked her phone away. She quickly hugged and congratulated her newly married friends and rushed Sofia back to the dressing room to change and grab their things. Though she was sorry about the fiasco that was Alex's wedding, she was relieved she didn't have time to say good-bye to everyone. She wasn't sure she could handle all that emotion on top of the nerves of getting on a plane and of course, anxiety over seeing her ex-wife for the first time in nearly two years. Though they were getting along, flirting even, and she truly was excited to see Callie, she knew it could be different once they saw each other again. That thought scared her more than anything. She had finally decided to open up to the idea of reconciling with her ex-wife, but what if they see each other and all the pain and anger comes flooding back for them? What if they were just able to be this way because of the safety and the anonymity the texts and phone calls offered.

Callie was a nervous damn wreck. She looked in the mirror at the light skinny jeans and form-fitting purple V-neck shirt she was currently wearing. This was the third outfit she had tried on in the last half hour. Nothing felt right, or looked right, or felt like it looked right. What was her deal? Was she gaining weight? Losing weight? Maybe she just needed a whole new wardrobe. Deciding she would worry about it later; Callie took off this outfit as well and dug through her closet once more. Finally finding something that would make her both look and feel good, Callie pulled out a pair of black jeans that hung low on her hips and showcased her ass perfectly without being too tight, a white button down dress shirt, and…aha…perfect…a red tie. Standing in front of the mirror in just her lacy mint green bra and panty set, she took a long look at her body. She had to admit, for someone who was just about to turn 40, she looked damn good. Nothing was sagging, her body was tone and fit, her legs were long and held the briefest traces of her newly developed exercise routine while her arms showcased the muscles acquired through years of setting and breaking bones, her stomach was tight and barely held traces of her pregnancy as she hadn't gotten big enough to really stretch out her skin, her breasts were still perky and of a decent size. She knew she was attractive and was always confident in that fact, but looking at herself now, while she saw the features others would find sexy, she just felt…off. Frowning slightly, Callie decided she was probably just nervous about how Arizona would respond to seeing her after so long. She could admit that she wondered if her ex-wife even found her attractive anymore. Shaking off that thought, she turned and proceeded to put on her fourth outfit of the day. Finally feeling comfortable, Callie left her room to double check both Sofia's and Arizona's rooms to ensure she hadn't forgotten anything.
In less than eight hours she was going to see her family again; Sofia for the first time in nearly a year and Arizona…well, she hadn't seen her ex-wife since she came out nearly two years ago and filled out the paperwork for Sofia's school, met her teachers, and doctors and dentists and made sure everything was settled and legal. That trip had actually been the beginning of her journey of self-reflection. Among other things that happened during that visit, it made her realize exactly how callous she had been when she started this whole thing. She spent the entire first afternoon and evening Arizona arrived hating herself as she sat in the hospital watching the pale blonde as she fitfully slept after having to be sedated in order to calm down. She reached the arrival gate just in time to see two EMT's pushing a gurney that held a sedated Arizona who was not only strapped in but also restrained by her ankles and wrists to keep her from kicking and flailing. Apparently there had been a great deal of turbulence upon descent and it threw her into a panic attack. The sight literally brought her to her knees. Not only because she hated seeing her ex-wife this way, but also in shame. She could only think about how the whole time leading up to the custody battle, she had kept nonchalantly suggesting that it was only a six hour flight and Arizona could visit whenever she wanted to. She was so focused on what she wanted, or thought she wanted, that she never once considered the other woman's needs. Her ex-wife was in a plane crash. She had lost her leg because of it. Her best friend, the father of their daughter was dead because of it. Yet, she took her daughter across the country like it was no big deal. She had felt so terrible and ashamed during the entire visit she didn't even know how to begin to make it up to her ex-wife. Shaking herself from the memory, Callie realized she had tears running down her face. She was also reminded she had to double check her arrangements.
Heading back into her bedroom, Callie went into her bathroom to clean up her face and fix what little makeup she was wearing. She then picked up her phone and dialed a familiar number. She smiled when it was picked up on the second ring, "Yes Mija, everything is taken care of." She blushed slightly at her father's greeting. "Hi daddy, sorry, I just…" she trailed off feeling slightly embarrassed. After receiving Arizona's text the other night and realizing once again how much the other woman was sacrificing for their family, Callie had text her father and asked if he could send his company jet to bring the girls back in style. After the fiasco during her first visit, Arizona reluctantly admitted that oddly, she felt safer on the smaller planes as she had flown to retrieve organs prior to this trip with very little anxiety. It was just being surrounded by so many people and feeling trapped by them that brought out her anxiety even more. So, to show her ex-wife some courtesy as well as the appreciation she was feeling, she was sending the jet for them. Her thoughts were interrupted by her father's calming voice, "I understand Calliope, you want everything perfect for your daughter and your wife…" "Daddy, she's not my wife anymore." Callie corrected quickly. Carlos laughed quietly, "Oh Mija, Arizona has never stopped being your wife, you just got lost for a while. You know I wasn't thrilled about her…ah…indiscretion, but I was more disappointed that you walked away from your marriage. I am just happy to see you are getting your head on straight and she is finally fighting for her family again." The brunette smiled at that. Her father had most certainly come a long way from the man who brought a priest to pray away her gayness and sinful ways. Not knowing how to respond, she simply said, "Thank you daddy." "Anything for my girls Calliope. I gave the pilot everything you asked of me and just received word that they are ready and awaiting your family on the tarmac." This idea brought a thrill to her and she did a quiet little happy dance at exactly how close she was to seeing her baby girl. After gushing her appreciation once again and more assurances that everything would work out, Callie disconnected the call.
Sitting on her bed, Callie looked over at the framed picture on her bedside table. She loved this picture and had kept it hidden for so long. She had finally unearthed it several months ago and had it sitting by her bed to motivate her to bring her family back together. She allowed herself to go back to that day 5 years ago before she tore her world apart. A stranger had taken the picture saying they looked like the perfect family and should have this memory for their daughter. She and Arizona had taken Sophia to the zoo on one of their rare days off together. Sofia was just getting good at walking, so they put her down for bit to discover on her own. Not realizing how quick their little girl had become, they were shocked when she took off like a shot when she saw the monkeys. Catching up to her, Callie had picked her up and held her over her head. Sofia and Callie were giggling at one another and Arizona was facing Callie, her super magic smile lighting up her face, eyes twinkling with love. They looked so happy. Looking at the blonde in the picture, Callie saw something she hadn't before. How had she never noticed this before? Looking closer, she realized Arizona wasn't smiling at the two of them. No, those ocean blue eyes and that super magic smile were aimed directly at her and that look! God! That look would bring her to her knees and cause the butterflies to dance in her stomach every single time. Shortly after that, the foundation crumbled beneath their feet and she walked away from her marriage. Not for the first time, she wondered if she made the right call.
Deciding not to wallow, she picked up her phone and checked the time. She felt a wave of excitement rush through her as she realized her family should be heading to the airport soon. Not able to stop herself and not really wanting to, she sent a quick text to her ex-wife.
Me: I can't wait to see you!
She didn't have to wait long to get a response. She smiled as she saw that Arizona was excited too. Then her breath caught as a picture came through. She hadn't seen the blonde in nearly two years. While they had each face-timed with their daughter on numerous occasions, the other had deliberately stayed out of the background. At first, it was really painful to see each other; there was so much hurt and anger between them. Then, as time progressed, it had just become habit. Over the past year, since she had come to terms with her feelings for the other woman, she found herself hoping to catch a glimpse of the blonde, but no such luck. Since she had gotten her hair cut, she was a little reluctant to facetime and had always worn her scrub cap or a hoodie on the occasion her daughter pressed to see her. It's not that she was ashamed of it, she loved her new cut and the feeling of confidence it gave her. She was however concerned about how the two most important people to her would react to it. Both Sofia and Arizona loved her hair and would often run their fingers through it as a form of relaxing themselves before sleep. Looking back at the picture on her phone, she was taken off guard by the beauty staring back at her. She always found her ex-wife beautiful, but there were times, like in this picture, she was absolutely stunning. Callie shifted in her seat a little trying to get a grip on the immediate attraction she felt. If a picture did this to her, what would seeing her in person do?
Me: Wow! You…you both look beautiful.
A: Yeah well, this dress is coming off ASAP.
That thought had the Latina's libido firing on all cylinders and she couldn't help but be a little flirty.
Me: Hmmm, now I really can't wait to see you ;)! Guess airport security would go quicker, though.
Did I really type that out loud?
A: LOL, not sure anyone wants to see that!
At that, Callie mentally raised her hand and said me, me, me like an eager schoolgirl. Settling instead for making a statement without saying anything at all she sent a final message and tucked her phone away.
Me: … … …
Callie took a deep breath, she really had to get a grip. She was afraid of setting herself up for disappointment. Recalling her many sessions where she and Dr. G discussed her impulsivity and impatience, the brunette sat back and tried to remind herself that if she truly did want her family back, she had to give it time and take Arizona's wants and needs into consideration.

Stepping off the dock at the pier, Arizona looked around the parking lot for the driver she had hired for the day. After sending her car ahead with the movers, she had relied on her friends and Uber to get around for the past few days. Today however, knowing everyone would be busy, she had hired a driver to pick them up, along with their luggage, to take them to the pier so they could get to the island for the wedding, then to wait for them and drive them to the airport. Seeing the older gentleman wave at her, she tugged on her sleepy daughter's arm and pulled her toward the car. Once inside, Arizona looked at the time and let out a sigh of relief as she realized she had just enough time to make one final stop. Though she wasn't big on saying goodbye to all her friends, she knew she couldn't leave Seattle with her daughter without visiting one more time. Leaning forward to give the driver the address of her destination, Arizona sat back, laid her head on the head rest, and closed her eyes. The day had been a whirlwind and this last visit was going to take its toll on her.
Hearing a clearing of a throat, Arizona sat up and realized she must have dozed off. Looking down at her baby girl who had also fallen asleep, she contemplated waking her for this. Deciding it would be best to let her sleep, the blonde quietly slipped out of her seat and grabbed the small arrangement of flowers she had taken from the wedding. Whispering that she would only be a few minutes, she slipped out of the car and headed down the small tree-lined path. Reaching a clearing, Arizona saw who she was looking for right away. She walked up to the granite headstone and laid the flowers on top of it. She then brought her fingers to her mouth, touched them with her lips and gently placed them on the picture of the smiling face engraved in stone. "Hi Mark." She whispered with a shaky breath. She was never one to talk to the dead, they were gone, she couldn't see them and she knew very well they couldn't hear her. But since her divorce and most frequently since Callie left for New York, she found herself here airing her deepest, darkest feelings. Mark had always been a good listener and now she didn't have to listen to his smarmy remarks. She smiled then, thinking of the always cheerful man who never failed to make everything sound just a little dirty. She hated that about him at one time, then she came to appreciate it, now she missed it. Wiping a stray tear, she sat on the bench they had erected a few years ago.
Taking a deep breath, she began, "So, I don't really know where to start. So much has happened since I brought baby girl to see you when she got home. It seems as though everything just finally caught up to her emotionally and she started acting out. I'll spare you the details, but her behaviors made me realize how much damage Callie and I had done and how much pain we were causing her. I can't make her stay where she doesn't want to be and I can't ask Callie to come home because its clear she doesn't want to be here. But also, because she is doing so well out there. She has her own medical center. You'd be so proud of her." Taking a deep breath, she continued shakily, "Quite honestly Mark, I don't want to be here anymore either. Not if they aren't here. I know we aren't together anymore…it's just…it's not the same you know? Nothing will ever be the same again. But Sofia comes first, she always will. So we are leaving, today, to move to New York to be closer to Callie. There were so many things we did wrong in our relationship, but the one thing we were always good at was raising that baby together, no matter what the circumstances." Knowing she was running out of time, she cut to the chase. "I'm scared Mark. Callie and I…well, we have been getting along so well, flirting a little even. But we hurt each other so much. Are we just destined to keep up with the same cycle? I mean, I can't do this again if that is the case. But God, I want to. I want to so badly, and it feels like…well…I get the feeling she wants to try too. I'm smiling again. That smile, you know the one you say I have only for her? It's that smile, I obviously can't see it, but I can feel it. I can feel the difference between my Calliope smile and my regular smile. So, yeah, I'm scared. You know I've always struggled to believe in all this crap…" she waived her arms around in front of her, "…ah, spirits and stuff, but if I did believe, I'd ask for your help. Just, ya know, something to let me know we will be okay this time. Something to let me know that…because even though I know Calliope Iphigenia Torres is it for me, I'd rather not have her at all than go through that pain of losing her all over again." Wiping her tears, she stood up and placed another kiss on her fingertips and rested them on top of the head stone. "We love you Mark." She whispered as she walked away and slid back into the car careful not to wake her daughter.

Rushing to the check-in desk dragging her daughter and suitcases behind her, Arizona pushed her boarding pass toward the ticket agent. The younger woman smiled at her and went through the company spiel of welcoming her. As she scanned the ticket, Arizona noticed her facial expression changed and became concerned. "What, what is it? We still have 45 minutes until take-off, I know you suggest that we…" her ramble was cut off by the smiling woman. "No ma'am, you aren't too late, there's a note here by your name." Confused now, Arizona asked, "What does it say?" The young lady pushed a button near her lapel and said something into her mouthpiece then returned her attention to the frantic blonde and the anxious little girl. "It's nothing bad ma'am, it appears that alternate arrangements have been made on your behalf and I was instructed to re-direct you and refund the cost of your tickets." Breathing out a heavy sigh, Arizona began to protest, "I have no idea what is going on, but we can't miss this flight. Can you just…" she was cut off once again, but this time by the arrival of a young man in a suit pulling up beside her in a golfcart like vehicle. "Dr. Robbins?" he asked cheerfully. Furrowing her brow, she looked over to the man who wore a black suit with gold trim, a crisp white shirt, and then she noticed the hat. It looked like one a pilot would wear, but instead of an airline logo, it sported the all too familiar capital "T" encircled in a gold wreath. She had become very familiar with this insignia over the last ten years. Pulling out her phone, she quickly sent off a text.
Me: Calliope Iphigenia Torres! What did you do?
"Good afternoon ma'am, if you and young Ms. Torres would like to come with me, I'll take you to your plane." the young man then stepped out of the car, took their suitcases and secured them to the back of it. Seeing her daughter bounce with excitement and the huge smile on her face, she knew fighting it would be a lost cause. If she were being honest, she was slightly relieved. The thought of getting on a commercial plane and not being able to take anything for her anxiety because she had her daughter with her scared the shit out of her. Just as she was about to respond to the young man, her phone vibrated in her hand.
Callie: I'm guessing you made it to the airport. Surprise!?
She just shook her head and let out a little laugh. She could almost picture her ex-wife nervously biting her bottom lip, dark chocolate eyes darting all over the place, twisting her fingers together, and bouncing up and down on her toes. That thought made her relax slightly. Grabbing her daughter's hand, she walked toward the small car. "Lead the way kind sir." She said playfully. She wanted to be mad at Callie for doing this. Immediately after the crash and up until a couple years ago, she would have been. She would have chalked it up to being typical of Callie to make these arrangements without discussing it with her. For so long, she resented anything her wife tried to do for her because she could only feel like it was being done out of pity or duty, or worse, out of guilt for having cut off her leg. But as she travelled through the airport, past security where she would have had to go into a small room and have her leg swabbed and tested for explosives, she came to a new realization. Her ex-wife wasn't making decisions for her or implying she couldn't handle it physically or emotionally; she was simply trying to make this trip as easy on her as possible. She was, in fact, being typical Callie. The Callie who wore her heart on her sleeve and wanted to do anything she could make others happy and comfortable…to make her happy and comfortable. As she felt that smile creep up her face once again, the one she had just described when talking to Mark's headstone, she realized she was happy, and she was grateful. Pulling out her phone, she dialed her ex-wife's number.
"I'm sorry. Please don't be mad." Chuckling at both the greeting and the speed at which the call was connected, Arizona decided to have a little fun with the other woman. "How long have you been pacing your living room waiting for me to contact you?" she asked jokingly. "I'm sorry Arizona…I know you could have…Wait! You aren't mad?" Laughing now, Arizona responded, "No Callie, I am not mad. I wish I would have known so I didn't run through the airport like a mad woman dragging our daughter behind me, but…no, I'm not mad. How could I be?" and she wasn't. In fact, she was feeling a little warm and fuzzy inside. It meant a lot to her that her ex-wife had thought of her anxiety and fear of flying. Knowing Callie, this was also her way of thanking her for bringing their daughter home.
On the other side of the country, Callie let out a huge sigh of relief and plopped down on her couch. Since receiving the text that her family was headed to the airport, she had indeed been pacing around her house waiting to get a text or phone call from the angry blonde ripping her a new one for sending the jet for her. It's not that Arizona was an unappreciative or thankless person, it's just that she was extremely independent and hated having things done for her, especially if she thought it was because of her disability. In the past, anything Callie tried to do for her wife usually brought on a huge fight. So while she knew that could be the case in this instance, she was willing to risk it for the well-being of both her daughter and her ex-wife. But hearing the playful tone and verbal confirmation from the other woman, her nervous energy quickly dissipated.
Smiling into the phone, she tried to explain her reasoning, "I know you…ah…had a rough trip last time, and…" she was interrupted by Arizona's scoff and lighthearted, "Understatement of the year." Thankful she didn't sound angry, Callie continued, "and I didn't want you to experience the same thing. I knew you wouldn't take anything since Sof was with you, so…I just wanted you to feel more comfortable." Arizona smiled at this. Though they weren't in a good place at the time, she knew her panic attack during her last visit shook up the Latina quite a bit. In fact, it was during that trip that she had genuinely appeared to be apologetic and regretful of what she had expected of her by moving their daughter so far away and expecting her to fly frequently if she wanted to see her. It was also then that Callie had arranged for her father to accompany Sofia to and from Seattle on his jet so she could visit Arizona rather than expect her to fly again. Realizing the other woman did, in fact, care about her, she simply offered. "Thank you Callie, it was very thoughtful."
Running her hand over the stubble on the side of her head, Callie asked, "Are you on the plane yet?" Seeing they were entering the tunnel which she assumed would take them to the tarmac, she responded, "Not yet, I think we are going out to the tarmac now." Looking at the driver, she saw him nod in agreement. Feeling her excitement grow again, the brunette offered, "Daddy just bought this one, claimed he needed an upgrade since he has been going out of the country more. Anyway, it…uh… has a bedroom and, well, I know you probably won't want to, but I sent him a prescription to fill for you for a light sedative and something to counteract the grogginess when you wake up. There's also an extra flight attendant who was hired for today to keep little miss busy for you. You don't have to…" she was starting to ramble so Arizona cut her off before she went into full blown Spanish ranting. "Callie, Callie, stop, thank you. It is all very sweet and considerate. Thank you for thinking of all that. I honestly don't know how I'll respond, but I appreciate it I really do. You have been so wonderful; I don't know how I can repay you." Arizona said quietly. Callie shook her head. This was so different than what she expected. She was prepared to defend her decision and argue her point. She was not prepared for her ex-wife to be so accepting and even gracious about it all.
"Arizona, you are bringing our baby to me. You are making such a huge sacrifice. This is truly the least I could do and daddy was happy to help in getting my family home." Not even realizing what she said until the silence had lasted a little longer than expected, Callie started to panic, "Not that…I mean…it's just…" "What? Callie, what's wrong?" Arizona asked confused at why her ex-wife suddenly got so nervous. They had just arrived at the plane and her attention was drawn from the conversation briefly. Apparently she missed something big. "I'm sorry, we just arrived at the plane and I missed what you said after saying I was bringing Sofia to you." Breathing a sigh of relief, Callie quickly covered, "It was nothing, I was just saying thank you again." Arizona smiled at this, she seemed to be doing a hell of a lot of that lately. Shaking her head, she responded, "Well, we are about to board, so I'll let you say hi to Sof, then I guess we will see you in a few hours." Her heart sped up when she heard, "God, I can't wait. I'll see you soon." Thinking about what she wanted to say, she went for the truth, "I am getting excited, maybe that will help balance out the anxiety." Before the other woman could answer, she handed the phone off to her daughter.
Arizona watched as her daughter jumped up and down and told her mamma all about her day and the plane. She looked at the way her expressive face lit up and her milk chocolate eyes that were so much like her ex-wife's twinkled with excitement. If she had any doubts before that she was doing the right thing, they had just disappeared. Placing her hands on her bubbly child's shoulders, she directed her up the stairs of the plane while she said her good-byes and handed the phone back. Finally stepping inside, Arizona couldn't hold back the gasp as she took in the luxurious interior. The uncomfortable airplane seats had been replaced with deep brown leather recliners still fitted with seatbelts for safety. There were beautiful brass and glass end tables, clearly attached to the floor, and the soft lighting and décor made her feel more like she was in one of her ex-father-in-law's luxury hotels rather than on an airplane. As she took her seat, she noticed a beautiful bouquet of her favorite gerbera daisies in bright purples and blues as well as a bottle of her favorite wine chilling in an ice bucket. On the other end table was a stack of coloring books, crayons, and another ice bucket containing her daughter's favorite juice. She was broken from her exploration by a man in a similar suit to that of the one she met inside the airport. Taking in the wings pinned to his lapels as well as what she quickly recognized as military pins worn on dress uniforms, she realized this man was clearly the pilot.
The older man reached out his hand in greeting. "Welcome aboard Mrs. Torres, I am Captain James Crutchfield and I will be escorting you to New York this afternoon." Hearing the man's words, Arizona was slightly confused both by the title and the quickening of her heartrate at being referred to as Mrs. Torres. Even when they were married they had both kept their names for professional reasons, but she couldn't deny she liked the sound of it. No sooner than she had that thought was it replaced with the sadder realization that she no longer had that right. Smiling politely, Arizona offered her hand and responded, "Thank you. You can call me Dr. Robbins…I'm not…" The older gentleman blushed and lowered his head, "My apologies ma'am, Mr. Torres told me to expect is granddaughter and daughter-in-law. I guess I'm still a little old fashioned to assume you had taken on Dr. Torres' last name." Daughter-in-law? Well that explains the Mrs. Torres. But really? Carlos referred to her as his daughter in law? Arizona decided rather than correct the man further, to let it drop. "No apologies necessary Captain Crutchfield. Thank you though." She then turned to help Sofia get to her seat and buckle up her seatbelt. Noticing the man was still there, she turned to see if he had more to say.
Clearing his throat, clearly uncomfortable, the pilot said, "Mr. Torres informed me of your history with flying and asked me to give you this." He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small bag from a well known pharmacy chain. He continued, "I'd like to assure you ma'am that I have an impeccable flying record and this aircraft is state of the art. I will do my best to give you and your daughter a safe and comfortable ride. Should you need anything, please feel free to have the flight attendants contact me and I will see to it personally." Arizona found this oddly reassuring. Though she knew this man had little control over what could happen to them, she felt safe with him and in this beautiful plane. "Thank you sir, that means a great deal." With that, she stuffed the medication in her pocket and took a seat next to her beautiful flowers. As she sat, she noticed a small card sticking out from the flowers. Taking it out of the tiny envelope, she read, "Beautiful flowers for a beautiful woman, looking forward to being in the same city and raising our daughter together again." Reading further she saw the signature little heart next to the capital letter 'C'. Running her fingers over the card, Arizona didn't know how to feel about the words. They could mean so many things. Then she smiled as a realization came to her. She wasn't angry about those words.
She very well could have been. There was a time not too long ago she would have scoffed and tossed the card and made a snide comment about how she wouldn't have to move if her ex-wife hadn't started all this. But she didn't feel like that now. No matter what pain she had endured, it was clear that this move had been good for Callie. Though they hadn't talked much since she left, they had talked and texted nearly nonstop in the past month and if she knew one thing for certain, the normally hot-headed impulsive Latina had changed. She also knew she herself had changed. She found herself again. She had let go of all her anger about the plane crash and even the pain of her failed marriage. She had finally found peace within herself and proved that she could once again survive anything thrown her way. With that thought in mind, she knew she was ready for whatever New York had in store for her. It was time to let go of her fears and see what could happen. She pulled out her phone and sent a quick text before putting it on airplane mode and settling in for the flight.
Me: Thank you for the flowers they are beautiful. This was all so very thoughtful Callie.
Me: New York, here we come!
