Chapter Three
Odessa
The marketplace was loud.
Ellana could feel a light headache rising through her head as she walked with the two Jedi. It had been a few hours since they had left Clan Lavellan behind, and she was now walking through one of the main cities upon this world. She had heard Mahanon talk about the marketplace before, given her age, she had never been here with him.
Her eyes were wide as she was taking in the variant colors that the people were wearing around them. They were mostly elves all around her, as it was with the clan but she was quick to notice that not all of them had the vallaslin of the Dalish, despite many of them around Mahanon's age or even the Keeper. They were selling clothing, food and even mechanical objects that she doesn't know about.
"Ellana, stay close,"
The voice of Solana Amell called out to her. Ellana quickly noticed that she had lingered in front of a store that were selling some carved dalish toys. She had seen some of them in the hands of the other children within the clan. The young child, quickly rushed forward running to the side of the older woman.
"Sorry," she said softly.
Solana simply gave her a gentle smile.
During the journey toward the marketplace, Solana had struck her with conversation and there was something about her that just radiated kindness that Ellana was quick to trust her. Despite what was happening to her, the pain in her heart at leaving home behind, there was another part of her that was just exited after all, she was accompanying Jedi, the heroes her people had a deep respect for.
The sound of an engine drew Ellana's attention toward the sky above them, which was filled with clouds despite how bright the sun was shining down from above. A ship was flying above them high enough that they won't be able to bother the people and yet, low enough that she could see its windows shining and she could have sworn she saw people upon the window.
"There is our pilot," the Asari spoke out.
A human male was waiting for them as they were approaching toward where a ship was waiting for them. It was easily the largest ship Ellana had ever seen in her life. It had a light soft white and red color running alongside the entire vessel. Its' wings were folded.
"Everything is ready?" Master T'Perro asked.
"All fueled up and ready to go," the man answered, his eyes finding Ellana, "And I am guessing she is the reason we came all this way."
"Indeed," Master T'Perro answered, "Solana, why don't you get our little friend settled within her room?"
"Yes master," Solana answered, "C'mon, Ellana."
Holding upon the older woman's hand, Ellana let herself be guided upon the ship's interior. Everything was light up from the light overhead as they walked through the hallway for few moments before reaching a door which automatically opened.
It was a small room and there was already a bed in the corner.
"This is my room," Solana said, "We'll have to share during our time here upon the ship. Here, I'll get your bed."
Solana pressed a button in the wall and it opened revealing another bed identical to the one that was already there. She pulled it out and worked placing the covers upon it and fixing them.
"It gets cold in space," she said, "So you'll have to keep warm."
Ellana glanced at the window noticing that the city around them had disappeared and it was only an inky blackness around them. She approached it, taking notice of the planet that was slowly disappearing from behind them. She was surprised that they had already taken off for she hadn't even felt the ship take off.
"You hungry?" Solana asked.
Ellana glanced at her before giving her a nod. Solana, having taken off her heavy brown cloak, was now walking with her toward a different part of the ship were some table were situated. There was a light shining down from the ceiling and they were no windows, thought she can feel the light hum of the ship's engine softly echoing around them.
"Just take a seat," Solana told her, "I'll get something ready."
Ellana did as she was asked and watched the other woman work her way through the kitchen. Her robes were similarly of earthly brown as the heavy cloak was as she was and there was the glint of the cylinder object that hung at her waist.
Her lightsaber.
"Is it hard…being a Jedi?" she asked.
Solana looked up at her, a light confusion in her features.
"They are struggles yes," she answered, "But I think it's not different than learning to be good at something."
Ellana tilted her head.
"You know, I was no older than you are when I was brought to the temple," Solana spoke after a moment, "I was a brash kid, more focused on learning how to fight than how to be a Jedi."
Solana then walked toward her, placing a plate in front of her, and she took a seat on the chair beside Ellana.
"Weren't you afraid?" Ellana asked her.
Solana smiled, "Of course I was and if you are it's a natural reaction. However, the trick is not allowing fear to drive your actions. When people are afraid, it can blind them to the simplest solutions that exist, solutions that could be right in front of them the entire time."
Ellana looked away from her.
"Don't worry," Solana continued, "You'll soon get used to how things are at the Temple."
Ellana nodded.
Odessa was a verdant gem of green and blue from space.
Lexi T'Perro stood behind the pilot as the ship was quickly making it's way toward the home of the Jedi Order. In all of the time she had left this place, it is always a heartwarming feeling to come back home after all this time. Thessia may be the home of her species, however Lexi will always feel like Odessa was home to her.
"Beginning our descent," Dunn spoke out flicking some of the switch as the ship entered the atmosphere.
The Jedi Temple of Odessa was always a marvel to those who seen it for the first time. A massive building with large towers expending upward toward the sky above them. The building in the sunlight almost seems to glow like a star. They were quickly approaching it and in no time at all, came to land at one of the landing pad for the crafts of the Jedi.
"Thank you for your service Captain," Lexi said with a light smile.
"It's no problem Master Jedi," Dunn answered her.
The Asari turned her attention away from him and walked toward the inner of the ship and she was quick to find their charge along with her padawan. The girls had formed a quick friendship during their journey and she was glad that Ellana was opening up to them. Lexi could feel that she was a bit afraid, nervous and yet excited all at once. The girl wasn't shielding her emotions at all, thought it was something she will learn during her time here in the Temple.
At her appearance, Solana broke off what she was saying, glancing up toward her. The living room of the ship had become a good place to find both Solana and Ellana as the two spent most of their time there.
"Master?"
"We're arrived," Lexi spoke out, "Come, we must report to the Council."
"Of course, Master," Solana spoke out.
Lexi smiled at them and then walked off, to grab her cloak.
Ellana's eyes were wide as she stepped out of the ship with Solana and Master T'Perro. The girl had heard the stories Solana told her about the Temple on Odessa, but the sight she was seeing was like something out of a fairy tale. She had never thought such things could be built in her entire lifetime and given her humble beginnings as a Halla keeper-aid; this was something else entirely.
They walked down the pathway leading toward the entrance of the Temple and already she can see other Jedi nearby as some were leaving. Large statues stood on either side of the walkway there, all of them holding lightsabers in front of them, almost like they were guarding their homes from an enemy they couldn't see.
"The First of the Jedi," Solana told her as she noticed where her gaze was, "It was said that they were the ones that build the foundation of what become the Jedi Order."
The hallways were just as large as the Temple. Massive columns held on the cavernous ceiling above them as they made their way through the large entrance hall of the Temple. Upon the ground was the massive symbol of the Jedi Order which was a lightsaber in the middle of two wings on either side of it, however, Ellana's attention couldn't focus on a single thing as the two Jedi led her toward an elevator which quickly rose through numerous floors until they came to a stop and it opened once more.
This area was still as specious as the others and Ellana saw another Jedi standing there, looking down at something that he had in his hand.
"Master Kresh," Solana spoke out.
The man looked up at them, his eyes taking them in.
"Ah, Solana, Lexi," the man smiled, "Welcome back."
"Hello Kresh," T'Perro greeted, "The Council in session?"
"They are," the man answered, "A territory dispute that the Citadel thinks the Jedi should be handling, nothing too severe, they should be wrapping things up soon…"
The man barely finished speaking when the door behind him slid open and another Jedi entered inside the room. Ellana gasped lightly noticing that it was another alien. This wasn't an Asari but the new arrival was still noticeable with green skin similar to the fishes the clan bring back after hunting. Large eyes, as black as obsidians were looking at them all as he tilted his head lightly at them with a light furrow of his brow. He was dressed in light leather over the robes of the Jedi, his saber hanging on his side, much longer than the ones that Master T'Perro and Solana has.
"Master Solans," T'Perro greeted.
The new arrival's lips twisted into a smile.
"They are waiting for you," he said, his voice sounding gravelly, "Come Kresh, we have our assignment."
The male Jedi nodded and the two left, thought Ellana saw the alien's gaze shifted toward her for a brief moment before leaving. She looked at them both as they walked down the hallway, the two in conversation to each other.
"Come," Master T'Perro spoke out.
The two stepped through the door into a circular room, where a group of Jedi were seating in comfortable chairs. They were seven of them, forming a circle around the entire room as they were staring at their entrance, all of them quiet but their gaze were curious and yet there was some hesitation there as well.
Windows behind their seats, allowed the sunlight to shine into the room which gave a view of the trees and the surroundings of the temple.
"Welcome back, Master T'Perro, Padawan Amell," a male voice spoke out to them.
Ellana's gaze found him seating right in the middle of the room. He was a dark-skinned man with long hair falling upon his back. He had a beard upon his features as his eyes which were black stared toward them. They were others members within the room and even some Asari and the master on the far left was an Elvhen like her, but she had no vallaslin upon her skin.
"Master Carlyle," T'Perro spoke out with a light smile.
"Then this is the girl that the Keeper spoke of in her transmission?" the man spoke out now glancing at Ellana who was standing in the middle of both T'Perro and Solana.
She felt Solana's hand upon her back causing her to walk forward lightly. She can feel the gaze of the Jedi Masters upon her as she stood, feeling a bit nervous being under such scrutiny.
"What is your name young one?" one of the Masters asked, her voice kind.
It was the Elvhen woman. Her eyes were a light shade of purple and her clothing which were a white and gold color shifted lightly as she spoke, leaning forward a little bit.
"Ellana of clan Lavellan," she answered, her voice trembling lightly.
"Clan Lavellan?" the Elvhen woman said, sounding like she recognized the name, "You're one of the Dalish then."
"I am," Ellana answered.
"Good," the Elvhen woman smiled, "It's been long time since one of the sister clans of Elvhenan has walked through these halls."
"Her connection to the Force is strong," another master spoke out, an Asari dressed in blue lovely blue robes that complimented her skin, her eyes a soft brown looking at her.
Ellana tilted her head at that. Master T'Perro had said the same thing on the night they first met. Then, the man who T'Perro called Carlyle spoke out.
"How do you feel, young one?" he asked.
She looked at him.
"I…I feel many things sir," she answered.
"Explain it to me?" he asked.
She swallowed lightly, feeling the same fear in the back of her mind she had felt when she left her home. The nervousness of what laid in front of her…
"I…I am afraid," she said, "That I left my home behind…I know I was sent here because I had a strange power…I don't really understand it at all."
The man smiled lightly.
"Not many Jedi Masters can say that they understand the Force well," he answered, "Even with our many years of training…however, we can teach the next generations on how to connect with the Force and pass on the knowledges we have gathered to them…And I sense that you will come to see this as well."
"How can you be so sure?" Ellana asked, confusion in her tone.
There were a few chuckles from the Masters around the room and Ellana can see a light amusement within their gazes as they stared at her.
"In time you will understand Ellana of clan Lavellan," Master Carlyle told her, "We promised your Keeper that we will teach you the ways of the Jedi and as such we will…Padawan Amell, can you take her to the medical ward so we can make a file for her."
"Yes Master," Solana said, giving them a bow "C'mon Ellana."
Ellana nodded, doing a little bow to the Jedi Masters before taking the Padawan's hand and out of the room. Then, she stopped realizing that T'Perro wasn't following after them. She turned toward the Asari woman but she simply smiled and did a 'go on' motion with her hand.
With that they left the Council Chambers.
"Never thought I'd see the day when a child will question your wisdom Master Carlyle," T'Perro said, giving the man a light smirk.
They were a few laughs within the room.
"She will be a good Jedi I sense," Carlyle spoke leaning into his chair, "Your report was right in saying that she was strong in the Force. We could feel it when you arrived on Odessa."
"Yes, that much we can agree on," the Asari in blue spoke out, her name being Master Ella T'Varl, "Yet…her eyes were silvers."
"You're referencing to the legends of the Silver Eyed Warriors?" the Elvhen Master spoke out, glancing at her, a light frown upon her features.
"I don't know about legends but her strength in the Force should be proof enough that she is not a normal child," Master Ella said, "If she is trained…which master would will teach her when she becomes a Padawan?"
"We will allow the Force to decide," Master Carlyle spoke out, "She is but a child, a curious child to be precise but a child nonetheless. We will train her just as we have trained any Younglings brought to our Order….however, I sense you have more to say on the subject Master T'Perro."
"Yes," Lexi said looking at the man, "I wish to conduct an investigation upon Ellana's mother."
"Why?"
"There is something clouded about her in the Force," Lexi answered, "The Keeper did tell me some about her and I feel that wherever she came from might become a problem in the future and that they will come for the child."
"So certain are you of this?"
"Yes."
The Council members looked at each other for a few moments.
"No," Carlyle spoke out, "It is not our duty to do so."
"What?" Lexi was surprised.
"Doing something like that is reckless," Carlyle told her, "and foolhardy. Whatever you have sensed Master T'Perro, the path is the girl to walk. We will aid her yes, but it is her destiny…her own journey."
"I sense it as well, "the Elvhen woman, Master Mahariel said.
Lexi frowned to herself, feeling a bit of frustration through her but, she released it into the Force, calming herself down.
"More you have to say Master T'Perro."
She looked up toward the Council.
"Yes, and it concern my Padawan…"
