Chapter Five
Life at the Temple
Ellana was following Instructor Leane toward his class. As she was a new arrival, he would be the one to introduce her toward the clan that she will be part of during her time here at the Temple. The man then entered the room where a group of children were seating about playing and laughing together.
"Settle down everyone," the man spoke out looking out at them all.
The voices quieted down as the group of children where now all looking toward the man, but Ellana could see some of the gazes looking toward her, curiosity within their eyes. They were a mix of humans and alien within the room, all of them children seemingly about her age or even older.
"Now," the man continued as the voices died out, "We will have a new joining our clan starting today. This is Ellana Lavellan and she will be part of our group for the foreseen future."
Ellana could see some interest in the kids gaze while others were whispering to each other. Then one of the kids raised their hand. It was a young girl with brown hair and bright blue eyes.
"Here," she said, "She can seat with us."
Ellana tilted her head lightly at her but then Leane gave her a light push in the back. So, she made her way forward toward where the girl was seating. She was wearing brown attire upon her body.
"Here seat," the girl said pointing at an empty space beside her.
"Thank you," Ellana told her.
The girl giggled.
"Hey, it's no problem," she answered her, "I'm Sara by the way."
"Ellana."
"I know," Sara answered her a light grin upon her lips, twinkles in her eyes.
"Alright everyone settles down," Leane spoke out, drawing our attentions again, "We are going to continue the lesson that we were working on yesterday and that is our connecting to the Force. As I am certain that some of you are familiar with it's working, a little revision is never wrong."
The class moved about as they were taking position upon the mated floor of the room and Ellana took a seat beside her new friend, Sara who guided her there.
"The Force is something that most of you are aware of," he continued, "It's been a part of your lives for as long as you could remember, and in my class, I will not only teach you on how to connect with it, but on how to call upon it for guidance and even knowledge. Through your training here in the Temple and beyond, you will all be tested in many different ways but for now, Younglings, allow me to teach you the first steps into becoming Jedi."
And that was how the first weeks of her training began.
Ellana spend most of her morning with her clan, training in meditation and connecting with the Force as those were the most basic skills that a Jedi can possess. For Ellana, it had been quite easy to connect with the strange power that she now has a name for.
For as long as she could remember, she could feel that strange power pulsing within her almost like a second heartbeat most of the time during her time with Clan Lavellan. That strange power that allows her to pick upon the feelings of her halla that she looked after and somehow subconsciously use to calm them.
Now with the teaching that she was being given and learning to connect with the Force during her first meditation, Ellana was slowly coming to realize that the Force was much deeper than she realizes. It was not like the heartbeat she had first thought, but felt almost like a river that was flowing through her…but also not at the same time.
It was a very strange feeling but it didn't feel all that unwelcoming…in fact, it felt almost like a parent or even…a familiar friend that she always had.
Sara, and by addition her twin brother Scott, were quick to be friend with her. The two Terrans as they introduced themselves had quickly become people she could rely on. One way to describe the twins were night and day given how different they could be and Ellana knew that if it wasn't for their gender, however, she wouldn't have been able to tell them apart.
Sara was a forward girl, always dragging her or even her brother with her whenever they had free time on their hands-on adventures around the Temple and Ellana in her curiosity, had gone along with her to explore the vast Temple that was quickly becoming a second home to her.
Scott was more interested in learning on how to do battle, and he always had a shine upon his face as he talks about old legends and stories that were going around the Temple about the Jedi and the many heroes that existed over the thousands of years of the Order's existence and he said that he was going to be just like them, be a hero of the Jedi.
Another young man in their clan was an Atlasian, the same species of human as Master Heinz given the white hair and bright blue eyes. He wore simple soft green tunics and was soft spoken if a bit stoic. Aslan didn't speak much to the others but he was still friendly whenever Ellana spoke to him or even encounter him in the halls in their way to class.
The few aliens in the class were good as well. While they weren't any Asari in her class, there was a Quarian girl, called Tura who seems to have a keen mind for mechanics and from what Ellana learned from Sara and Scott, the Quarian were well known to be the best in the galaxy about their tech work. Tura was kind of soft spoken most of the time and seems to be very humble within herself. With purple skin and luminous eyes, and dark blue hair, Tura was someone that was always working to strengthen herself in the Force.
One of the other aliens was a Salarian boy called Ulush. He was quite fast talking and incredibly intelligent. Always a step ahead of most of the clan whenever he was in lectures.
The classes however were varied in many ways.
With Instructor Leane, they learned to tap into the Force, and even learning to use it in small ways like levitating objects and trying to control and learn from it. They were other classes which teach them the History of the Jedi Order and that was with an Asari teacher by the name of Lula T'Eril.
The classes that most of Ellana's clan were most fun and enjoyable were the combat classes that they were learning. In one of the classes with a gruff Dwarf Jedi called Bordun, he taught them a form of combat called 'the Jedi Katas'.
With the Jedi katas, they were learning to move through a set of combat technique made specially for Force users to use and while they were still on the beginner's levels since they were Younglings. Ellana can feel her body grow tired a lot during those classes however she grew used to it.
The most interesting class was the lightsaber training. While the training sabers they had within the Temple will never truly harm them, most of the Younglings quickly learned that it does stings when they made contact with the glowing weapon.
Despite missing her home back on Elvhanan, Ellana find herself growing to enjoy herself and her time here at the Temple and before she knew it, the Jedi Temple had become a home.
Ellana had her hand aimed toward the stone in front of her. She had a light frown upon her features as she directed the river within her, the flow of the Force toward the direction of the stone. She can feel the stone within the force, the flow gently moving around it almost like a ghostly hand that she was controlling and in front of her eyes, she could see the stone move and wiggle from the unseen pressure that she was placing upon it.
Then she moved to lift it, feeling the strain that was upon herself. While she had grown close to understand the force and draw upon it, it was still an exhausting process to her. The stone continued to wiggle in front of her, and from the scratching sound it was making, the stone was moving from it's original position, thought however it wasn't lifting at all.
Ellana narrowed her eyes at it, turning her hand moving it like she was going to cup the bottom of the stone shifting the flow for a better grip within the Force. She started to lift the stone but it only wiggled again before she released her hold upon it and the Force.
Feeling a light exhaustion running through her, Ellana glanced around toward her clan to see how they were fairing. Sara and Scott weren't doing much better than she was and she can see sweat starting to appear on the young boy's forehead.
Tura and Ulush were in the same boat thought Ulush was doing better than her as his stone was a few inches off the ground and it seems to be taking a lot of effort for him to just do that. The only one that seems to be doing well was Aslan who had his stone high in the air in front of him and was the complete picture of calm.
"Having problem Lavellan?" Instructor Leane asked.
"Yes," she said, "It's more difficult than I previously believed."
"Continue with the practice," the man said, "They are no victory without knowing defeat after all."
"Yes Master," Ellana said with a nod.
It was a common saying from Leane she knew. The young woman refocused her attention toward the direction of the stone again getting ready to try again. Focusing upon the flow once more, she allowed the Force to move through her again, and knowing the stone was in front of her, Ellana could also feel it within the force as well. Deepening her focus and without even raising her hand, the young woman drew within the well of power that was within her, she focused upon the action of lifting the stone with the force.
She could hear the scrapping of the stone against the ground and then it was silence around her. She can feel the stone within the Force, focusing wholly upon it and then she opened her eyes.
She blinked.
The stone was floating right in front of her face slowly spinning like a planet near a star. She looked at it for a few moments feeling the light strain upon her and then, the stone slowly started to fall until it was upon the ground in front of her seated form again.
"You see?" Leane told her with a light smile.
Ellana nodded.
The man gave her a smile again before turning toward the rest of the clan.
"Alright, everyone," he spoke out drawing their attention, "Class is over for now."
The group looked up toward the teacher as he walked around the room, they were in. a soft groan came from Sara's direction as the young girl stood up on her feet, running a hand through her hair. Aslan and the others were already standing up as well and Ellana glanced at her friend.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah," Sara answered with a light smile, "the training is beginning to get tougher now."
It was true in what she was saying.
In the few months of what she had been doing, Ellana had remarked the difficulty rising throughout the weeks as their training advanced more and more.
"C'mon," Scott said looking at them both, "Let's go get some food from the mess before the day's over."
Their training with Master Leane had been their last class for today and Ellana was quick to follow after the twins through the halls of the Temple. She glanced back toward the others seeing Ulush and Tura following after them.
"You're coming to the mess as well?" she asked them.
"I am quite famished after such a long day," Tura answered her, "I hope they have some dextro food still."
"Yeah, the katas are getting more as well," Ulush added.
"But we're on way to become Jedi Knights," Scott exclaimed, "All those training are going to be helping us in the long run. The one thing I am waiting for is the Gathering."
"The Gathering?" Ellana repeated, "Isn't that the ritual we go through get our own lightsaber?"
"Exactly," Scott smiled at her.
"But we've only had a few months of training," Tara said tilting her head, "There is no way they'll sent us to the Gathering."
"But Silver clan had gone to their Gathering a few weeks ago," Scott told her.
"Silver clan?" Ellana said surprised.
The Silver clan were a little bit ahead of the Moon clan which she was part of. They shared class with them, but it was mostly their writing classes as well as learning about Jedi history class.
"I'm surprised they already went on something like that," Sara said not hiding her shock.
"But they work so closely with us," Tura wondered, "Are they starting to consider us to go?"
Ulush frowned to himself.
"Master Leane double our focus on Force exercises," he said, "training patience and control. Could be clue for what is coming next."
He wasn't wrong in thinking that.
"I still think it's too soon," Sara said.
"Scott, how do you know that the silver Clan went to the Gathering?" Ellana asked him.
"In our last lightsaber training, they didn't use the training sabers at all," the young man reminded her, "and well…I asked Master Heinz about it."
"I think Sara's right in saying it's too soon for us," Tura said frowning lightly, "Ellana only joined us a few months ago…"
"And she is keeping up," Ulush told her, "Despite the limited time Ellana had with us, she has managed to match us despite the grueling pace."
Sara gave her friend a look.
"You know…she is kinda right about you."
"Maybe it's the Dalish in me," Ellana said, "My people always had been on the outdoors and work like that has never fazed us."
Scott glanced at us, a light smirk upon his lips.
"Doesn't matter," he said, "It only means that the Gathering is near for our clan."
His optimism was refreshing, Ellana remarked with a light smile.
