Chapter 17
It was aggravating, just sitting and waiting in this room.
Two minutes had passed when Aizawa came into the principal's office; something that was all too familiar to him as a student and now as a teacher.
The repetitive pitter patter of his fingers tapping against the wooden armrest filled his ears to help break away from the confounding boredom.
He looked at the clock and now saw that three minutes had passed since he last checked.
He silently groaned at the time and looked at the small, nicely dressed animal that also shared the room with him. He was making himself a cup of tea as Aizawa was just watching him, wanting nothing more than to start the meeting that he was called in for.
He knew what the discussion was going to be about. That was a big part of why he was so agitated by the wait.
The principal took a pleasing and relaxing sniff of the tea he had just made.
"Earl Grey Tea, would you like a cup?"
"No thanks."
"Alright, suit yourself."
The animal placed the cup of tea on the desk and hopped up on its chair.
"Welp, let's start this meeting. I'm pretty sure you know why you're here, so let's just get into it. One of the parents are mad that their kid is already expelled in the just the second week of the school year."
Aizawa stared into the principal's eyes plainly.
"…And?"
Nezu sighed from the teacher's response, "And… the mother of the child just happens to be a top hero in this country."
"Really? Well, I must once again say… and?"
The principal put his elbow down on the desk and propped his head on his fist to look at the teacher.
"If someone of her stature were to go to the public about how unfairly U.A. treated her child then it wouldn't be good for the school… or yourself," Nezu further explained, "I know that you mean well with your actions, believe me, but this isn't the first time we've had parents complain about you expelling their children."
Aizawa shifted in his seat after what Nezu informed him.
He knew the student that was the cause of discussion. It was a boy. Brash, arrogant, thought the world revolved around him, looked down on those he considered weaker.
The boy was by all means talented and skilled, but it was one incident after another with him, and newest incident made Aizawa seen enough of him.
While watching over the heroics class, the boy had actually used his quirk in a very reckless manner. It was something that didn't need to happen.
The boy had gotten a classmate of his hurt severely hurt in an attempt to show off. Now the kid obviously didn't mean to hurt anyone, but a solid reprimanding needed to be done and with his past incidents, expulsion was the next and final step for the student.
He takes no joy in expelling a student of his. His students are a reflection of his teachings and if he has to expel a student, it's like a mark of failure on his part and during his time as a teacher he would have to expel quite a few students.
Back to the conversation he was having, it was going towards… something. He knew the meeting was going to be about his constant expulsions of students, but in his stomach, he was bracing himself for the worst.
"So, where's this going exactly? Am I getting fired?" Aizawa impatiently asked, wanting to know if he was still going to have a job by the end of the conversation.
This wasn't a job he was pining for as a kid. He wanted to be, was, and still is a hero. Two of his childhood friends had gotten jobs in U.A. and they were encouraging (or in his POV badgering) him to apply for a teaching position at the school as well.
It was a career that he thought would never pursue in his lifetime… and look at him now.
His demeanor doesn't show it, but he actually enjoys being a teacher, being able to instill lessons and help mold heroes of the future. It would be upsetting for him if he were to lose this opportunity.
As he awaited the principal's answer to his question, his mind started wandering to what his next steps should be if he were to be fired.
"No, No, I can assure you that your job is safe," Nezu reassured, "but… we will have to reinstate the child that you kicked out back into the school."
Aizawa closed his eyes and sighed, "Seriously?"
Nezu nodded his head with resentment, "Yes, with the other parents who complained, we can easily look past them, but a professional hero complaining? I'm afraid we're going to have to roll over on this one. They'll be placed back in your class effectively two days from now. That is all sir!" The mouse cheerfully concluded.
With that Aizawa got up from the chair and bowed to the animal before making his leave.
…
He wasn't a very open person. He would rarely make plans to hang out with others after work, the only people he hung out with worked with him, those people being Nemuri and Hisashi.
Today was one of those days where he had no plans made, so he went straight home after the meeting.
He made his way through his apartment complex, now standing in front of the solid and thick door that would lead him to his sanctuary.
He opened the door and was greeted by the meows of cats, each of them happy to see him back from work.
He came inside the apartment and got himself into his evening clothes, all while the cats flocked around his feet.
"Guessing you all must've really missed me huh? He said to the cats.
He went over to the cabinet and brought out some dried cat food and gave each cat a serving.
The cats were eating, the workday is done, Sunday's tomorrow, meaning that he would have to do some hero work around the city, but for now he could just relax.
These cats that he had in his house were all strays, strays that he would keep for only a little while before sending them back off into the concrete jungle that is Musutafu. Some of the cats would come to the apartment complex in particular spot outside of it, knowing that the scruffy black-haired teacher would come and take them home, take care of them for a bit before releasing them back out.
He laid down on the couch and tried to take it easy.
He tried to wipe away the events of today, but his mind kept wandering back to the fact that an actual professional hero would use their fame to bitch and stomp around that their son was expelled. They of all people should understand that being a hero isn't a joke.
Their behavior was something that Aizawa thought was truly unbecoming of a hero… but that's just how things are with these heroes of today.
It took the purring of a cat to take his mind off of today's activities.
He looked at the cat and found it bizarre that he wasn't eating with the rest of the strays.
He continued to look at the cat, now peering into its eyes as the cats peered deeply into his.
Were it a staring match, Aizawa would've already lost by now. The cat was staring at the teacher, not at all blinking.
'What's with you?' Aizawa thought.
The teacher felt his eyes begin to water.
He closed his eyes and began to rub them.
…
Everything was a haze when Aizawa had awoke. He could barely see from the messy black locks of his own hair that was covering his face.
Through the blinding curtain that was his hair, he was able to make out what appeared to be his own student, Matvey.
Aizawa was lying on his back, looking at his student who was also on his back.
What once was the overly confident, flamboyant, pink haired class clown was now a lifeless, heavily bleeding husk of a 15-year-old.
The Angel wasn't moving, blood pouring out heavily from the back of his head and through the locks of his wavy pink hair on the right side of his face (the only side that Aizawa could see from his position), Aizawa could see that Matvey's eyes were nearly shut, with a tiny sliver of his eyelid open and his mouth slightly open.
The sight of seeing his own student in such a horrific state made the usually stoic teacher heart sink.
He turned his eyes toward the roof that they crashed into. There was major structural damage done to the blue roof. Damage that would be hard to believe came from a human crashing into it.
After hitting the roof, they must've slid down from there and hit the ground.
He remembered back to when they were about to hit the roof of the Downpour Zone. At first, he was going to hit the roof with Matvey behind him, then he remembered a hand being wrapped around his head. Had he hit the roof first, then he wouldn't even be able to look at this student, he would've been dead. Which is when he realized that Matvey must've shifted their position to protect him from the impact. The blood pouring from the back of Matvey's head must've come from him hitting roof back first Aizawa realized.
A regular school trip turned into a fight for their lives.
He's taken his previous classes to this facility before, and he would remember the lessons, trials and tribulations each student of his would have to go through in Thirteen's rescue trainings. The joy the student would have when they figured out what to do to better help those, giving advice to students for better grasp on their quirk and how they can utilize it, seeing students make up plans on how they would approach different situations, it got the homeroom teacher teary eyed knowing that this class of students he was teaching was now at the brutal mercy of villains instead of going through rescue training.
As a hero, one would need to come to terms with the fact that any day could be their last.
He's been in a few situations in his time where his life could end, but he faced those situations with a rather calm and understanding nature. He had no kids or a spouse. Truthfully, before he had gotten job as a teacher, he doubted if he would've had over a few people show up at his funeral.
What caused the teacher to start tearing up was the fact that mere inches away from him was a 15-year-old student was dead or on the verge right before his eyes, made all the more tragic by the fact that the same student actually tried to rescue him.
Not to mention that he didn't know of any of his other students' whereabouts.
The one thing he didn't want to have happen, is have kids that he's supposed to leading them to the path of being a hero, get killed or harmed.
'Shit.' Aizawa cursed in his mind.
He wanted to get himself up off the ground and carry his student to safety, but with his broken arms and aching body, it was a tall task.
He was grunting and groaning, body in absolute pain, just trying to get himself back to his feet without the use of his arms.
He turned himself over, stomach now on ground and closer to Matvey. He was close to rising up to his knees, when suddenly, something very light but large was on top of him.
He looked over to see that it was one of Matvey's pink angel wings, keeping him getting back up.
Aizawa's teary eyes widened, when he saw them out.
He looked back at his student and the body still looked motionless even with the wings deployed out, utterly confusing the teacher.
"What the hell?"
…
There he was, laying on wet ground, eyes open, looking at the vast view of… pure black darkness.
Matvey tried to move his body, but he found that he was unable to do anything. No matter how hard he tried, his body didn't move. It wasn't like he was in pain either, his body was like as if it just shutdown.
His face was expressionless as he couldn't even move his face around or talk, all he could do was blink and move his eyes around. He was nearly a vegetable.
'W-What the fuck is going on!? Where am I!?' Matvey frantically said in his mind.
As he continued to fight whatever it was that was making him immovable, he heard something… a voice.
"Hello."
Despite his face or body not showing it, the mysterious voice shook the boy.
He wanted to look around to see who it was that was speaking to him, but the best he could do was move his brown pupils around while in his prone state.
"No reason to be afraid, I mean you no harm," the mysterious voice said in a smooth and mollifying voice.
The guarantee the voice made did nothing to ease Matvey as he continued to fight within himself to get free.
"I understand your fear towards everything going on, but you need to calm down… please."
Matvey was still frantic, but he actually started listening a little to what the voice was saying, that was when he registered something.
'Is… Is she speaking to me in Russian?'
The voice was talking to Matvey in his own language and the voice sounded soft, feminine and mature.
"Yes… Just be at ease, everything is okay."
After his futile attempts to break himself free, Matvey finally did as suggested and relaxed, though in the back of his mind he was still a little apprehensive to everything going on.
'…Alright… not like I have any other choice in the matter.'
"Okay," the voice spoke once again, "Now, as you can obviously feel, you can't move your body. This is normal for what it is that is happening to you, because you are in what can be considered… a different realm of sorts."
'… Different realm?'
"I don't have a lot of time to explain how it works right now… so I just need you to listen carefully. Though you can't move, you can still spread your wings out. Bring them out and then close your eyes and try to envision yourself in a place where you would feel at true peace and tranquility."
'Peace and tranquility? I guess I can give it a shot.'
Like the strange voice said, Matvey was able to form his wings and close his eyes to start to drifting away.
As he was drifting away into his peace and tranquility, quietness filled the pitch-black area.
"…"
'…'
"…"
'…'
"… That's not peace and tranquility!" The voice fumed, breaking away from the soothing voice it had.
Matvey's eyelids were snapped open.
'What do you mean it's not!? Having my face sandwiched between two firm- wait… you can read my mind?'
The female voice sighed, "Yes I can, and you need to really need to take this seriously Matvey."
Matvey scoffed in his mind, 'Why should I? I don't know you or know what's going on right now. For all I know this is probably just some dream I'm having,' He retorted.
"… You really think this is a dream? You don't know what happened to you?"
'… Nope. Should I?'
There was more silence in the area before the voice spoke back up.
"… No… well in any case, back to my original instruction, you need to envision a place, a memory, anything that makes you feel at peace… and one that's not promiscuous like what you previously imagined." The voice admonished.
'Fine.'
Matvey closed his eyes again and began to drift away.
In his mind, Matvey was going through scenarios and any memory he could think of and none of them could take him to tranquility.
'Damn, I can't think of anything.'
"Keep trying Matvey. Think of a moment in your life where you were truly happy. I'm sure there's many of them, just pick one and let yourself slip away," The voice said in a soothingly.
'… You know what. If you can just keep talking to me, I think I can get to this pure tranquility thing you're talking about. You have a really soothing voice.'
"… O-Okay… What do you want me to do exactly?"
'I don't know… can you sing?'
"… Well, a-a little. What would you like for me to sing exactly?"
'Hm, do you know any American pop music from the 80's? You know, Hall & Oates, Prince, Billy Idol, Wang Chung… anything?'
Though he couldn't see a face, Matvey could sense that the voice that was speaking to him was getting annoyed by his request
"80's American Pop?" The voice mumbled to itself, tone sounding like it was surprised to find out that the 15-year-old boy from the 2010's would like that kind of music.
"Well, I am fluent in English and I do know of a Prince song I can sing, 'I Would Die 4 U'. Does that work?"
'Yeah, that works.'
There was another moment of silence as the female voice was prepping itself to sing.
Matvey laid back with his eyes closed, now listening the soothing voice sing the chart topping single as if it were a lullaby. and whisk him into a total Zen like state of mind. Him not having control of his body actually helped him reach this state as it made it easier for him to just let the lyrics take him.
He didn't know what this was all for, but he was feeling relaxed.
The voice was at the chorus of the song, each word coming through his ears like total bliss.
When the chorus had reached its end, Matvey expected for the voice to go to the second verse, but instead it spoke to him.
"Now, before I can sing the rest of the song for you Matvey, I need you to do something for me."
'Sure, what do you need?'
"This is going to sound strange, but when I was singing and you felt as relaxed as you did, try and spread those feeling throughout your body and wings, Okay?"
'Spread it? Sure, I can try that.'
"Alright… onto verse 2!"
…
The black-haired teacher looked on at his student's pink wings that were covering him, which stopped him from getting to his knees.
With the wings holding him down, he would need to crawl or roll away from the wings.
Aizawa took the roll option.
The mangled teacher tried to roll out from the wings, fighting through the pain of putting pressure on his broken arms.
'Shit,' Aizawa cursed in his head from the pain, "I need to… save my students- ACK!"
Aizawa's efforts to free himself was halted when a weird sensation was going through his body. The sensation wasn't related to his injuries as it wasn't something that caused him pain, it was more a sensation that sent shivers up his spine and caused him to look at his student.
He narrowed his eyes at what he was seeing.
He saw Matvey, still looking unconscious, with a glowing pink halo floating above his head.
He was mystified by the strange light above his student's head.
"What's going on with-ACK!" Aizawa yelled again, the strange sensation he experienced seconds ago coming back to him and this time it wasn't going away.
He had closed his eyes from the feeling. It took a lot for him to open his eyes to see what it was that possibly causing this.
When he opened them again, he saw that the pink wings that were still on him were now glowing a very light pink.
He had immediately closed his eyes as the experience he was going through was like something he never experienced before.
His body felt like it was being swished around in a typhoon which was strange as he was laying still on the ground.
And then… it stopped. The strange sensation ended and Aizawa was able to open his eyes.
When he did, he saw that Matvey's halo and wings were gone.
He blinked and began to rub his teary eyes, 'What just happened?'
That was when he realized something… he just moved his arms.
He was in utter disbelief at this as he started to move them to see if there was anything wrong with them.
As he did this, he realized that the rest of his body was perfectly fine.
He got up to his feet and stared down at his still out cold student.
He couldn't even form a thought about what just happened as he was immensely confused. That was the case until he felt something trickle down his face. It was his blood.
He felt around his head and felt no wound or cuts.
Though he was healed, the dirt, blood and damaged clothes was still on him.
He wiped away some of his blood and rubbed it on his already dirty black pants, before approaching his student.
He gently lifted up the boy's head to inspect for any damage done to the back of his head as blood was coming from it, and just like with himself, there was wound or anything, just blood.
He felt Matvey's pulse and checked his heartbeat and there was no problem with him.
Aizawa looked around the area in which they were in.
They were by the Downpour Zone, which was nearest to the stairs that lead up to the entrance way. He didn't want to waste anymore time at the spot, especially knowing that the rest of his students might be in trouble.
"I don't know what the hell you did, but let's get out of here," Aizawa said to the unresponsive Matvey.
He picked him up from off the ground and carried him fireman style.
The teacher began running with his newly healed legs with the sole objective of getting towards exit or at least somewhere safe to drop him.
Before the teacher could reach the stairs however, something was fast approaching him. Something coming from the air.
Aizawa looked up and lo and behold… the Nomu was still on him.
It was coming down from the air, belting out a tribal like screech with his limbs extended out, looking to splash on top of him.
Aizawa was able to catch this and dodge the attack by leaping out of way with Matvey still on his shoulders.
The Nomu hit the ground hard, bringing forth a lot of dust and dirt that clouded the area from where he hit.
When everything cleared up, there stood the Nomu with its frightening beady eyes, looking directly at its two targets.
Aizawa leaping dodge caused him and Matvey to now be face to face with the Nomu once again. Only this time, the Nomu was now blocking Aizawa from accessing the stairs that can get his student to safety.
Aizawa looked back at the student that was on his shoulders and saw that he was still out.
"Shit."
If Matvey were awake, he would be able to escape for himself, but with him unconscious and the Nomu being so close, Aizawa couldn't exactly just dump him off somewhere so he can fight.
The Nomu began to stalk forward, sending a dooming sense of fear in the heart and mind of the homeroom teacher. Suddenly. There was a loud boom came from up by the entrance way.
This loud noise caused Aizawa and even the Nomu to stop everything and look up at the stairs.
There was a mutual silence between the teacher and the Nomu as they stared at the top of the stairs, each of them curious as to what it was that caused the commotion.
And in what was barely a second, they would find out what was the source, and it would be the Nomu who would get a very blunt and painful explanation.
"CALIFORNIA SMASH!"
Suddenly, a powerful force of wind hit the area in which Aizawa was standing in, so powerful that it almost caused him to completely drop Matvey from his shoulders.
Aizawa had to shield his eyes from the dust and wind that was built up.
Though he didn't exactly see what happened that caused it, he knew exactly who and what it was.
'Better late than fucking never.'
When the dust settled, it was just as Aizawa predicted.
It was All Might, dressed in a white button up and some beige dress pants. He was currently on top of the monster that nearly killed both Aizawa and Matvey, his fist pressing into its hideous face.
The number one hero had a look of frightening intensity in his eyes.
"Sorry I'm late," All Might muttered through gritted teeth, not at all flashing his radiant smile. His eyes were locked down on the Nomu that was beneath him.
The Nomu let out a low cry from the attack it had just received.
Aizawa looked on at the two hulking figures before he started to run towards the now freely open stairs.
"You better be careful," Aizawa said sternly, now running past All Might and making his way up the stairs with Matvey in tow.
The teacher now finally reached the top of the steps and that was when he saw that there was a few more of his students still present.
'Ibara, Shihai, Kojiro, Shoda and… Thirteen?'
Kojiro was carrying the rescue teacher bridal style and the students were currently making their way out of the front door that looked like it was nearly knocked off its hinges.
'Must be the work of All Might.'
"Ugh…"
Aizawa's eyebrows were raised by the quiet groan that came from directly behind him.
He turned his head to see Matvey begin to slowly open his eyes.
The Russian student began to slowly move his head around to see where he was and who was around.
To Matvey, it looked like he was in some type of amusement park, with different type of areas and zone themes.
"Where am I?" Matvey asked with a dry voice.
The boy looked and saw that he was on top of a case of stairs and on the bottom of those stairs, was All Might currently wrestling some type of… bird-human- "Mascot?"
Aizawa stared into the eyes of his student who was looking down and All Might and saw that they look empty and distant.
'He doesn't remember what just happened here.'
Aizawa took his eyes off his student and back on the door, which he was once again running to.
The sudden movement caused Matvey to look at who it was that was carrying him.
"… ? What are you doing? Why are you carrying me?"
Aizawa didn't want to answer his questions as all he wanted to do was carry Matvey to safety and quickly come back and rescue more of his students.
The only answer Aizawa could afford to give the student was dishonest… but technically correct.
"We're just on a school trip."
AN: AAAAANNND That's Chapter Number 17 everybody, pretty short chapter all told.
