What an unlucky day… a certain spiky haired boy thought to himself but it seems it wasn't for me, this time at least.
This boy's name is Touma Kamijou, a rumored living legend. Of course he denies all of it, he is just a simple high school student with terrible grades and a knack for trouble. Whether some of it be luck, fate, or whatever, the boy will negate it all without even trying to.
"Hello? I'd like an ambulance at…" Touma told the hospital over his phone, how ironic that this is being called in such a close vicinity of it "You know what? Never mind…"
There was the sound of confusion on the other end, clearly from such an abrupt phone call emergency suddenly canceling.
The spiky haired boy looked down at the subject of the matter, the troublemaker that injured Kuroko. Although he was not friends with or friendly with the girl, it made him angry seeing people he knew in such a state. The troublemaker was a girl with red hair, she wore a short skirt and a rather exposed portion of her torso. Touma recognized the jacket she wore as it was Kirigoaka academy's uniform, the girl's exposed torso showed her breasts barley wrapped with bandages. Her face was bloody and smashed up, some sort of sick joke for someone to hurt somebody like this. Truth be told, even if this girl could be perceived as an enemy for what she did, he just couldn't help but feel compassion.
After sighing, Touma picked up the grievously injured girl bridal style and started walking towards the hospital. The boy knew that he could get there faster by even just walking than them assembling a hospital ambulance, not to mention the fact that he felt responsible for how he had not made it in time to see who did this.
As soon as he walked towards the front entrance and staff inside saw him carrying someone, a couple people ran outside with a rolling bed to put her into.
They definitely take their jobs seriously, that's good to see, Touma thought to himself, wondering what he should do next.
"What should I do next?" he said aloud, surprised who talked next.
"Well, you could always wait for the girl to recover," a frog faced doctor said as he walked out the hospital "You seem to habit of being in and out of this hospital, why not stay for a bit longer? Of course, unless you have to do something."
The spiky haired boy was surprised at first, thinking about going home to Index since she was hungry at times like these. However, Touma remembered that the damn pyromaniac brought her back to England for some training.
"I don't seem to have anything on my schedule for the rest of the night," he replied to the doctor, much to the pleasure of Mr frog face.
"Good, though come in and wait inside for now" the doctor motioned "I have you called when we finish operating on her."
Touma sat down in the empty waiting room in one of the top floors, quietly thinking to himself what to do. There was a chance that whoever that girl is, she was conscious during the whole process of him moving her to the hospital. Something felt off the entire time he carried her, he just didn't know what it was.
It was about two hours until a nurse came in and showed him to the red heads room. Not sure of what to expect, the boy braced himself for what was to come.
"What do you mean he is coming here?!" Touma heard an unknown shout come from the room the nurse led him to.
"S-sorry, we'll have to retreat before he gets here," they were obviously talked about him, having listened to just about enough to understand he slammed the door open.
Standing over the unconscious red head with a knife in hand was a man in a mask, while accelerator was seen jumping out the window. The figure with the knife ran to the window and jumped. As Touma looked out the window, there was no sign of accelerator or the masked man.
"It seems that there were more visitors than expected," the frog faced doctor said walking in "It seems they didn't want to stay to chat."
"Yeah, though that doesn't matter right now" Touma said checking for any visible injuries those two could've caused "It seems they didn't do anything...yet. Who is this girl anyways?"
The doctor looked surprised this time, under the impression that Touma knew the girl. Laughing to himself about knowing that this is normal for the boy, he spoke.
"Her name is Awaki Musujime and she goes to Kirigoaka," the doctor stated "She is a level 4 teleporter, though it says she has the potential to be a level 5 if it wasn't for-"
"Past trauma," Awaki said sharply, making her being awake known "Last thing I remember is that damned accelerator! I swear I'll get him next time! Who are you anyways and what are you doing here in my room?"
Touma brushed off her rude remarks about to say something, however the doctor decided to speak up first.
"Our local resident here," the girl raised her eyebrows at the boy being called a local resident to a hospital "Brought you in injured, so we managed to fix you up."
The girl looked surprised to see the boy in front of her smiling with a hand in gesture to her.
"My name is Touma Kamijou, it's nice to meet you Musujime-san," surprisingly to Touma, Awaki responded in kind.
"My name is Awaki Musujime, the pleasure is mine to meet my savior," Awaki smirked shaking his hand "I apologize for my rude behavior earlier, you can just call me Awaki if you want."
Damn it the doctor got away while we were talking, there goes my escape though he thought this, he didn't consider it unlucky. In a world where it felt like everything was against him, it was odd how he felt happy about something perceived as unfortunate.
"Well, what exactly where you doing fighting the top ESPer in the city? Especially after your run in with Misaka and Kuroko…" the girl hung her head low at his words, the truth was harder to hear when it consisted of your mistakes.
"I-I…" damn it, why am I acting so damn stupid in front of Touma? The girl thought "I was on a job with my comrades, we are not exactly the above ground types...why did you save me anyways?"
"Who needs a reason to save someone?" Touma answered immediately.
This guy never even bothered to consider that I am better dead than need saving the red head thought inwardly.
"But I'm NOT worth saving!" Awaki exploded, making Touma step aback, her expression then turned sad. How long had it been since she had genuinely talked with another human being? At best not even her own mother would listen to her trouble, who needs her anyways?
"I have spent my time doing unthinkable acts, violent crimes, who else but me deserved this fate?!" if the girl had the strength to stand up, she would be right now. The guilt she felt for a long time of the path she has taken finally took its tole, tears started to spill. Awaki paid little mind to the boy in front of her, stuck in her own thoughts of regret, wishing to return to her life from before.
"Well, don't you wish to change?" the girl looked up "Sure, you've made mistakes in the past, but hasn't everyone made mistakes before? Our past mistakes may chase us around everywhere we go, but that doesn't mean we are unable to atone for it!" the red head had stopped crying, thinking about his words.
"B-but…" Touma responded with his eyes "I'm...just afraid. I have no friends, neither does anyone want to be mine."
Touma sighed knowing he would probably look back on this, putting a hand on the back of his head. He wanted to blame his luck, but luck wasn't the person making his choices.
"Well, I guess if you need help," he started "You can always reach out to me, though I can't guarantee that I'm the best when it comes to most these issues. Hiding from these issues will only make the end result that much worse, we must always face the past at some point."
Touma was at the bed close to Awaki when he said this, so she ended up jumping on him with a hug.
"Thank you Touma!" said boy was blushing as Awaki snuggled him like a teddy bear.
In the other room, the heaven canceler was smiling while listening in on the conversation. It was never old hearing sappy moments like that, it always hit a weak point in him. Picking up the phone, the frog faced doctor rang an unknown number to only be called in emergencies.
"I would hope there is a good reason for you to be the one calling," a monotone voice on the other end spoke.
"Of course, I'm calling in a favor after all," the voice stayed silent at what the doctor said "You'll have Awaki Musujime transfer schools to Touma Kamijou's class. As well as no more involving the poor girl in that project you mentioned to me before."
It seemed that the unknown voice just sighed across the line.
"I see, if it is a favor then I have no choice but to accept," the voice said emotionless "It will not change the course of my plans too much. You sure do have a soft spot even when getting this old, eh, old friend?"
The doctor could only chuckle at the other end of the line, him being called a friend by this man? Absolutely comical, he thought to himself.
"Maybe so, hearing the hope he gave her might have been what had done it for me," the two laughed at that "Maybe that hope is the same reason you chose him in the first place…"
With that, the doctor hung up the phone and walked into Awaki's room. Both Touma and Awaki, who were talking turned to face the doctor.
"I've got some good news and bad news for you, Musujime-san," the girl looked up in anticipation, hands balled into fists "The good news is that you sustained no permanent injuries and will finish your recovery by tomorrow morning."
To say she was relieved, is an understatement. Awaki had no idea the man's skill in front of her, known as the Heaven Canceler and how renowned he is around the world. But now, what could be the bad news? She froze, thinking of anything being possible, what would this city make her do now that she was able? Would she be put to random missions against her will? What would-
"Hey, don't worry about it," feeling a hand on her shoulder, she smiled in remembrance at the boy "No matter what, I'll still be here with you, Musujime-san."
The boy smiled giving the nervous girl reassurance, the doctor couldn't help but smile at this. Though, the news he was about to give had some bad but could be interpreted either way.
"Alright, what is the bad news?"
"Due to previous observation and pattern on your mental health, as well as your school attendance record I have deemed it necessary to be transferred schools," the two had shocked looks on their faces as the doctor finished "you will be attending a certain high school with Touma here. I hope you will not keep your previous habits from your last school, at least now that you have a person to help support you along the way."
Upon hearing this, the red head actually shouted in joy, drawing the other two's attention.
"That is so awesome!" the girl exclaimed, then blushing red, realizing that Touma was right next to her "You better tell me all about it later, Touma-kun!"
"Yeah, yeah I will," Touma laughed at how cute she was being.
Cute? Damn it! Kill those thoughts, no more perverse thoughts for this unlucky boy, Touma thought smacking himself inwardly at his own thoughts.
"Also, I would like you, Touma, to be her guardian/escort around of sorts," Awaki smiled brightly while Touma sighed at extra responsibility "You will be moving dorm rooms with the ones appropriate to your new school and allotted the correct amount of time to move. You will start school immediately tomorrow, I will let you two figure it out. Now then, if there are no questions I will be in my office."
The doctor walked out the room leaving Touma and Awaki in their thoughts. For Touma, this was great news to hear that the girl made full recovery. Although, he found it unfortunate to have the job of looking after his newly made friend. They had quite the initial bump in their first interaction, but will still not hesitate to help this new girl he just met.
For Awaki though, a million thoughts were running through her head at once. Her face was red with a bright smile, thoughts on the heaven cancelers words. She would be spending extra time with this boy she just met! Not that she didn't like that, quite the opposite. Awaki just felt it was so sudden, but nonetheless she didn't question it.
"So, since tomorrow school starts I guess I will show you your way to school," Touma managed to get out "I'll warn you beforehand, my class can be a little...hectic Musujime-san."
"Alright! As long as you're there, then I won't need to worry Touma-kun!" Awaki declared making both faces look away in embarrassment "A-anyways, stop calling me by my last name, it's way too formal for me, got it?"
Touma nodded his head and smiled with a thumbs up.
"You got it Awaki-san," the girl's face seemed to falter for a second.
Well at least it's an improvement. Awaki thought to herself, Rome wasn't built in a day to say the least.
"I'm going to head back home, I'll be here in the early morning to walk to school with you," the boy smiled at his prospectively good luck since he met this girl.
Awaki said goodbye and watched as the boy, Touma who she just met, walked out the door. Closing her eyes to go to sleep, Awaki had calm dreams tonight, this time not remembering the past trauma as a nightmare.
