Chapter Six
Of Siblings: Magic and Muggle
Diana awoke in the middle of the night.
She checked her clock. It was 2:13 am.
Strange.
This had happened before, but Diana had been in such a good sleep. It was mostly the thought of not having to live with Dudley that made her fall asleep so easily.
Diana decided to get up and check more of Lily's letters.
Dear Petunia,
Please, please, please come back to me! I'm not a freak! Please Tuney, siblings are supposed to love and care for each other.
Lily
Diana put the letter down. She could hardly read any of Lily's letters with tears swimming in her eyes.
Just from the letter, she knew that it was wrong of her to want Dudley gone. She was supposed to be up all night, nervous about the court case like her mother.
Diana wondered what exactly happened between Petunia and Lily. From the letters, it sounded as though Lily had found out she was magical, and Petunia had been jealous.
I need to ask Mum about this.
Yes. She was right. She needed to find the courage to ask her mum about what had happened between herself and Lily Evans twenty years ago.
Diana knew her mother was awake, sick with worry. So she knocked on the door quietly.
"Come in," came a voice.
Diana entered the room at sat downat the end of her mother's bed.
"Mum," she said, "I'm wasting no time. What happened between you and Lily Evans?"
Petunia took a long time answering. She eventually said, "Diana, this isn't the time."
"Oh yes, this is the time!" Diana cried. "You and Dad have neglected Harry for years, and while you've started to atone, you're still lucky I haven't called the authorities! Harry has been neglected for years because of his parents, and I want to know why!"
Petunia sighed. "Diana, it all started with Lily's letter. A letter about-"
"Magic," Diana finished. "I also want you to explain that."
Petunia continued. "In the summer of 1970, me and Lily met a boy, who happened to be a wizard. He knew Lily was magical, and he explained their world to her. He said I was a Muggle, which I later found out meant not magical.
"Oh Diana, I was hopelessly jealous! I hated Lily for being magic! I called her a freak! I didn't even invite her to my wedding until Mum and Dad made me because I hated her so much!
"I am saddened that I never got to make amends. I still hated Lily even after her death, but that all changed when you were six. You reminded me of Lily, and I realised that I'd made a huge mistake in separating myself from Lily and trying to separate you from Harry."
"What, separate me from Harry?" asked Diana.
"Yes. When you were born, I went to Lily and her husband's house, just so you could see your family once. You met Harry, and you loved each other from the beginning. Of course, you won't remember this now.
"Seeing how happy you were with Harry, I began to take you there more. You and Harry had a bond with each other. But I noticed, and I selfishly took you back to Privet Drive and never visited Lily again."
Diana looked at Petunia, and said, "Now you're going to explain what happened that night ten years ago when Harry became an orphan."
Petunia took a deep breath. "Lily told me about a Dark Lord named Lord Voldemort. Lord Voldemort was gaining power, and he was apparently killing any wizard in his way.
"He decided to go after Lily and he'd family. He killed Lily and her husband, but he tried to kill Harry and failed, and ended up killing himself in the process. That's where Harry's scar is from. Harry's a legend in the magical world. He was sent here to me because I'm, no, was Lily's sister."
"Thank you, Mum," Diana whispered. "You've helped me. Just promise me to tell Harry about this."
"Whatever make you happy Diana."
Diana shut the door quietly, and heard sniffing. She realised she was maybe a bit hard on her mother. She had forced her to recount her biggest mistakes. But that was her fault, not Diana's. She had to make up for what she did to Lily and Harry, and this was the best place to start.
Diana considered going to tell Harry, but stopped herself. This was something Petunia would have to tell him.
Diana realised that Petunia's story had a moral in it. Never give up on family, even if it seemed hard. Never wish your family was gone, even if you hated them.
The next morning, Petunia was a mess. She lay on the couch, fidgeting with her fingers, muttering about 'Ickle Diddykins."
"Mum, you'll get Dudley," Diana said. "If Vernon seems like he's winning, you can pull the 'my husband beat my nephew I don't think he's fit to raise a child' card and send him to jail."
Petunia must've not heard her, because she kept fidgeting and muttering.
Diana suddenly felt queasy.
"Harry, I want Dudley to live with us," she said. "I want my brother here with us."
Harry looked very confused. "But yesterday you said-"
"It doesn't matter," said Diana. "I want Dudley with us, not Dad."
She could tell Harry disagreed, but didn't point this out. Dudley had bullied Harry mercilessly for years after all.
Later in the afternoon, Diana and Harry were home alone.
"Diana, what would you do if it was I was the one in the court case?" Harry asked.
"I'd be nervous, is a light way to put it," Diana said.
"I just wish I had someone else to live with. No offence, but living with Petunia the best," Harry continued.
"What options have you got, Harry?" Diana asked. "You can't just run away."
"I wonder how the court case is going," Harry said.
"Are you kidding me? The court case ended half an hour ago. Mum - and hopefully Dudley - should be back any minute now," Diana told Harry.
As if on cue, the door opened. Petunia walked in with Dudley behind her.
"We won!" Petunia squealed. "Diana, I can't believe we won!"
But Dudley didn't look very happy.
"What happened?" Diana asked Dudley.
"How big is this house?" he demanded. "Are we poor?"
"It's a three bedroom house, which means you'll have to share a room with Harry," Diana replied. "We're not poor, but Mum's going to need a job."
"I'M NOT SHARING A ROOM!" yelled Dudley. "I WON'T SHARE!"
Petunia faced Dudley. "Dudley," she said gently, "this is how we're living from now on. I'm sorry, but you have to share with Harry. I've already set up your mattress. Once I get a job, I'll buy you a bed."
Dudley stormed up the stairs and Diana heard a door slam.
Harry came up to her and whispered, "That was a bit anti-climactic. Anyways, what are we going to do about the letter?"
Diana suddenly felt panicked. What day was it?
She raced upstairs and checked the calendar in her room (Her calendar, not Lily Evans') and sighed with relief as she saw the date. It was only the 18th. 13 more days. But enough time had passed. Harry needed to write back.
That night, Diana once again crept through the hall and reached Harry's bedroom. Dudley was currently sleeping on the couch.
Harry opened the door. "It's six in the morning, Diana. What is it."
"Six letter word, starts with l and has two Ts," replied Diana. "You need to talk to Mum."
Harry took a deep breath. "Fine." He knocked on the door of Petunia's room.
"Come in!"
Harry opened the door and walked in self consciously.
Diana sighed with relief. She had a feeling things would work out fine.
