Part 4: Angels United

Chapter 24: Liftoff III

"I'm honored that I have this opportunity, but I don't know why it's me and not someone like you, Kyo."

Glancing over at Engel, Kyo crossed his arms. "No idea."

Seriously… why was Engel chosen over him!? He was the Keyblade wielder. Engel couldn't even use magic, and he had little to no athletic ability.

Flinch.

Ow…

Stupid curse.

Angel took her brother's hand. "You had to be chosen for a reason. I'm sure we can figure out what that reason is. And don't worry, Kyo and I will be here to protect you!"

"Yeah…"

No time to be jealous now. His friend did need him. Jealous or not, Kyo needed to help Engel.

"I'm sure everything will work out." Said Kairi as she walked over toward them, glancing back to where Sora stood, talking softly to a very peeved Yurisa.

Kyo looked toward his sister as well. "Is she… not taking it well?"

"Yeah," she sighed, "but your father is handling it."

Angel's grip tightened on her flute case. "Well, I can admit I'm a little nervous too. And I'm concerned about Engel."

"I'm concerned about myself." He admitted with a slight smile. "Aunt Kairi, do you think this will be ok? And do you think Areth will be ok with it?"

Kairi smiled, laying her hand on his head. "Yeah. Areth will be proud. And I'm sure you'll do fine. You were chosen for a reason, and whatever that reason is, it is made just for you."

"Even if I'm physically weak and can't generate any mana?"

"Even then." She glanced back over to her husband and daughter. Her daughter seemed to be getting more agitated by the second. "But no matter what," her eyes turned back to them, "take care of each other. No matter what. Even if this isn't the lineup you would've have wanted." Her eyes fixed on Kyo for just a moment.

She knew.

Darn it. Mothers and their ability to just KNOW things.

"We know." Angel smiled. "We'll be alright."

Kairi sighed. "I know. Now… I think your father needs backup."

"Go take care of Yuri. We'll call him later. She needs you guys more than us right now."

"Alright." Hugging her son, she planted a kiss on his forehead. "Be safe." Her eyes lifted up to the other twins. "Angel, keep an eye on these two. And Engel, take care… oh, do you have your-"

"Always." Engel pulled out his inhaler.

"Alright."

With one last smile, Kairi jogged over to Sora and Yurisa.

"You'll do wonderfully." Kingdom Hearts said as she glided over, her eyes smiling with excitement. "And don't worry about travel. I have a gummi ship ready for you." She handed Engel a white star shard.

He took it. "I do think we'll need to stop by the islands. I need to grab my medication."

"Oh! Almost forgot about that!"

Snap.

"Fixed! Your medication is on the ship now."

Letting out a laugh, Kyo patted his friend on the shoulder. "Isn't it nice to have someone like her around?"

"Yeah."

"Now get going… I think I need to have a conversation with your sister."

"Yeah. Let's go."

Holding the star shard close, Engel and the other two vanished.

When they appeared in a gummi ship, the white-haired boy blinked. His stomach churned with… excitement? Fear?

"Looks like there's a room for me and one for you two." Angel said from down the small hallway.

Kyo glanced inside. "I'll take the top bunk. Probably easier for me."

"Yeah."

"And this last room is a training room, I think."

Holding up a bottle, Kyo grinned. "Hey, she did put your medicine in here. Awesome!"

The other boy wasn't really listening. He stared at the star shard as he walked into the cockpit.

Flash.

A set of coordinates appeared on the screen as the shard pulsed.

"I guess… we go here." Taking in a deep breath, the boy smiled.

His first adventure.

What lay before him… was anyone's guess.

Ten Years Before

Sora glanced out the window of his house as he waited for his gummi phone call to go through. He could see Kyo running around, playing with Angel and Engel. They'd just finished a magic lesson with Kairi.

It went ok.

For two of them, at least.

He watched as the kids chased each other around.

Engel stopped rather quickly, taking in long deep breaths before pulling out his new inhaler. Sora could see the boy's limbs shaking from here.

Thankfully, Kairi walked over, leading him to sit down.

"Sora?"

"Hey Ven." The man looked down at the phone. "How are things?"

"They're good. How are things with you?"

"Good. Hey, Ven, I was wondering… that guy who was experimenting on Angel and Engel when they were babies, do you have his notes on file?"

"9S does. I can check. Why?"

Glancing back out at the kids, he answered. "It's just… Engel today couldn't do any magic at all. Most people can show something at first. A spark… something. He showed nothing. And, he's really weak physically; I know that some people can be, but with the fact that he was experimented on as an infant, I'm suspicious. I just want to check to see if-"

"I'll check. Give me twenty minutes."

Ven closed the call.

So, Sora waited.

Five minutes…

Ten…

Fifteen…

Twenty…

RING

"Ven?"

"We just check Viorel's notes. Your hunch was right… Viorel tested all the experiments on Engel, planning to use him as a test and then use the successful ones on Angel. Apparently, he tried to enhance him physically, or at least how his body would mature. Wanting to make him stronger. He wrote down that it backfired and weakened Engel's physical form; not just muscles, but lungs, heart, and other organs."

"So that's why Engel gets sick often."

"Yep. And apparently, while trying an experiment to enhance Engel's ability to generate natural mana, he completely removed Engel's ability. So, he can't generate any mana, at all."

"That means… no magical weapons, no magic at all… and he probably wouldn't be able to swing a sword for long anyway. That's… going to be hard for him to hear. He really wants to be a Keyblade wielder one day. They all do."

"Yeah."

Sora glanced back out at the little boy.

He didn't deserve this.

Areth needed to know… and they'd have to tell Engel eventually.

"Thanks Ven…"

"No problem."

Present Day

"Dire."

The masked man finished his sip of tea before looking up. "Let me guess, my quarry has set out as well."

"Indeed."

Setting down his teacup, the man stood up, twirling his cane. "Now, care to tell me who my opponent might be."

"You're eager."

"Of course." Dire smiled. "As a kind headmaster, I make it a point to know my student roster before school begins."

Hisashi chuckled behind his helmet. "Of course. You may remember Sora's son…"

"Indeed. So, he is part of the group. What about Xehanort's little angel?"

"She is as well."

"Are either of them the virtue I seek?"

"No."

"Then who?"

"Xehanort's son, Engel."

Dire stopped, tapping his finger on the top of his cane. "The boy with no magical ability? Really?" His smile widened. "So… I get the outlier of the group. This should be interesting. With no magic and no weapons, I wonder how my opponent will fare."

With a slight twirl, he donned his coat and hat before stepping into a dark corridor.

"Son of Xehanort, let's hope you don't disappoint me."

And so we begin with the third group!

Hope you enjoyed!
