Re:Worthy Redux

Act 1, start

"Take care, Subaru!" turning around, he saw his mother, auburn haired, a warm smile and slightly slanted eyes, of which people say can be scary or intimidating but now with love and compassion in them, wasted on someone as useless and wasteful as him, ignoring her he continued on, it was probably better that way, at least for now

Cold; it was cold, freezing nearly as the pale moonlight was shining down on the path that he walked alone, the bitterly frigid winds blew through his hair and clothes making him shiver and his teeth chatter slightly, he being Natsuki Subaru, a young man wallowing in guilt and melancholy, one who had become a mere shell of his former self, a failure, after all he was supposed to be a perfect imitation of his father, yet he couldn't even do that, something so simple as living up to expectations, simple and easy expectations yet he failed that like with everything else

Regardless of the storm of emotions and thoughts that whirled around within his mind, he still had to eat, thus the moonlit path he walked alone came to an end when he came upon his local convenience store, a mini stop, a small but well stocked store that had what he needed, his entry to the store was signalled by the short jingle and the electronic doors sliding open, immediately walking over to the aisle to the far left, he stopped when his attention was piqued by some manga sitting on the shelf undisturbed, feeling the need to have a peek through it, he had a look

"*sigh* this is where they drag you in, huh…" Subaru half muttered to himself, his broken eyes skimming over the pages with a small, empty voice to match it

Placing the small book back from where he found it, he moved on to get what he originally came for, food, picking up some pringles (best crisps, fight me) first, he moved further down the aisle and crouched down to take a look at some more unhealthy 'dishes'

"Nah, not natto…" First picking up the ramen that looked good, he placed the food choice back in favour for something else, finally having what he came for, Subaru made his way to the front of the store to pay for the items in his basket, realising he probably shouldn't stay out much longer considering how dark it was out, after all he didn't want to worry his parents more than he already did so he took out his wallet when his total came to…

"That'll be 363 yen please" the cashier in blue asked in a professional but tired sounding voice, his eyes showing obvious signs of exhaustion considering the bags under them and his slouched over posture, he moved sluggishly and yawned before waiting for Subaru

"A grooved edge 10 hmm…" putting the coin back, he fumbled around for a couple of seconds in his wallet before retrieving a second 10 yen coin, gathering it with the rest of his money, he handed it to the cashier, watching his still fatigued movements slowly fumble the change into the right slots in the cash register before thanking him for his patronage and waiting for his next customer

Once out of the store, Subaru moved to the crossing when the world around him distorted, the image of a man draped in crimson appeared in his head, thinking it was no big problem, Subaru moved on

"I guess your eyes would play tricks on you after playing visual novels and watching anime all day, who'd have thought, huh?" allowing a dry chuckle to escape his lips, Subaru got closer to the road, preparing to look both ways, he resolved himself "I guess it's time, huh… I need to apologise to my parents, things can go back to how they used to be, we can be a happy family, I won't be such a… disappointment… anymore" talking to himself once more, his face dropped at the implications of the word 'anymore' but forced his mind elsewhere and thought about the upcoming conversation with his parents, he allowed a small wry smile to adorn his face as his anxiety slowly built up

Subaru was lost in his thoughts when he was snapped back to reality when the world distorted again… only it was much worse and Subaru felt nauseous to his core, he could feel himself disassociate with reality itself as it felt like he was pulled to a different plane of existence before his eyes burned before a blinding light

…

Noise, and a lot of it, the loud sounds filled Subaru's eardrums as he opened his eyes, afraid that the pain would come back and permanently blind him this time around, but once he did, his life would be changed indefinitely

The first thing Subaru saw upon opening his eyes was a bustling market place, filled with humans and demi-humans alike, it would appear as though Subaru had…

"I've been transported to another world!?" Subaru exclaimed, maybe a bit too loud as everyone in his immediate vicinity turned to him, some looked at him like he was crazy and others were wary of him, only after a couple of seconds did the crowd around disperse, most muttering insults or prayers under their breath before walking off to do what they had planned

Nodding his head, Subaru started talking to himself, a habit he'd picked up over the years of being holed up in his room alone

"mhm, the typical medieval architecture, check! Demi-humans, check! Magic…" pulling a ridiculous pose he probably saw in an anime, he brought his hand up to eye level and chanted "Fire bolt!" … and nothing "Damn it! I guess I'm not ready to use magic yet huh… oh well, that means I probably got some sort of overpowered ability, right?" he asked to no one, not expecting an answer he moved on until he reached a stand, selling what appeared to be apples, walking up to the man at the apple stand

The man at the stand, standing at somewhere around 6 feet, built like a truck and with strikingly vibrant bright green hair, spoke to the boy in a casual manner

"Yo nii-chan, those are some weird clothes you're wearin', you a traveller or somethin'?" pointing to Subaru's tracksuit, the green haired man looked him up and down, Subaru quickly looked around and realised that no one else would have a tracksuit and went along with what the stand owner said

"Yeah, something like that, anyway what are these?" Subaru knew what they were, but wanted to make sure they weren't some poisonous fruit that would kill him if he ate it, thus his question to the guy behind the stand

The man with light green hair raised his eye brows slightly "You don't even know what appas are? Anyway, are ya buyin' or not?" He finally got his point across, putting his hand out to receive some sort of currency, he continued "I don't appreciate window shoppers, if you ain't buyin', don't just stand out here"

Subaru took out his wallet and placed a bill and some coins into the man's hand "Is this currency used here? If not… I'm broke" the realisation hit him like a truck when he remembered that his currency probably wouldn't even be recognised here, let alone used

The man eyed him suspiciously before handing his money back to him "In all my years here, I ain't ever seen money like that, say kid? Where'd you say you were travellin' from?" he now sounded intrigued rather than suspicious, Subaru didn't know whether to reveal this or not but thought it wouldn't hurt to tell him, maybe he knew it

'hmph, fat chance alright' Subaru thought to himself, allowing a low chuckle to escape his lips

"Well, if I'm right, it should be the eastern most nation on the continental map, a small island called Japan, you know it?" Subaru asked the man, a small bit of hope welled up from within him, he didn't necessarily want to go home now, but he'd better have some sort of contingency plan for the future

"Japan huh? Sorry kid, never hea- Oi! Kid, this money isn't used here, that means you're flat broke! Get out of 'ere before you drive all of my customers away!" the man angrily shouted at Subaru while getting in his face, staggering Subaru a little bit before he walked off, waving to the guy behind him, he shouted to the tall man again

"Sorry about that old man! Next time I come by, I'll make sure to actually buy something, so you'd better save some for me!" the man perked up again, only to chuckle to himself and shout back to the kid, a small smirk visible on his face

"You better! Get to work, broke kid and next time you'll be a customer!" waving him off, the green haired man got back to trying to gather customers and sell more 'appas', Subaru realising he had no money, thought of the next best thing to do and set off

"If I don't have any money, then I'll have to go around gathering information!" Subaru, again saying this too loud, gathered the attention of more than a few passer-by's, all looking at him with an all to familiar look of confusion, moving on from the crowd before something happened to him, he quickly found himself at the town centre, a decently sized waterfall in the middle that sprayed out water into the white marble bowl beneath, after admiring it for a couple of seconds, he turned away and walked off to what appeared to be public bathrooms, and not being able to read the written language, he walked into the girls bathroom, prompting a quick slap to the face and leaving a sizable red mark on the side of his face

After that embarrassing display Subaru thought it would be good to go into some sort of bar or inn, to gather information and get out of the sun, after all being a shut in meant that Subaru was not used to getting so much sunlight and was feeling slightly sunburnt

"Right! This place will have to do for now" walking into the bar, Subaru noticed not a single human sat inside and the bartender had shaken his head at him, standing there for a minute trying to decipher what he meant he didn't have time to realise he was falling into a canal after being pushed out and falling head first into some water…

'At least I cooled off, right… *sigh*' sighing, Subaru got out of the canal and continued on into the city when a thought intruded on his mind 'hold on a minute, where actually am I!?' remembering his conversation with the appa stand man, he realised that he forgot to ask him the name of the city, cursing himself Subaru continued on until he found a turn in the road leading down to an alleyway

"What could go wrong, right?" Subaru muttered to himself, walking down the alley he made sure to keep an eye out for anything suspicious before taking a seat on a step not to far from the entrance of the alley, breathing in deep, he exhaled and calmed down slightly "So… I'm broke, I'm homeless, I can't read or write and I have no idea where I am? Is that all? anything I'm missing?"

"Oi, what are ya mutterin' to yourself down 'ere alone kid? Don't ya know it's dangerous to walk into alleys alone, huh?" much to Subaru's dismay, they didn't sound concerned, but rather as if they were mocking him for walking into their trap, Subaru stood up knowing he was either about to run or there was going to be a fight

"H-Huh, oh yeah, r-right you guys are right, I should get going now, huh?" Subaru tried to speed walk away before two of them blocked the way, one being a tall tanned man on the fatter side, far taller than Subaru and had a good hundred pounds over him, the second one being more Subaru's height and weight, wearing oversized prison cuffs on each wrist and looking more malnourished than the his counterpart, wearing grey clothing and blue-ish grey hair, both however having wide smirks on their face while the smaller mushroom looking one sat off slightly to the side, but still walking towards Subaru

"Nuh-uh kid, you still gotta pay us back for that info, cough up everythin' you got and we might let you live" The tallest one laughed while the other two snickered, closing in on Subaru and blocking him in a corner with nowhere to run, Subaru steeled himself and prepared for a fight, subtly changing his direction to the tallest one, he prepared to pull his ultimate move

Pointing at the tallest one he asked "Hey you, what time is it?"

Confused, the tall man raised his eyebrows "Huh, what are yo-!" he didn't get time to finish his sentence as Subaru dashed forward and threw a jab to the guy's chin, stunning him then he turned to the one his size and side kicked him in the solar plexus and winding him, before turning to the smallest one who was further away, rushing over to him he prepared a super man punch, only for the mushroom sized guy to pull a knife from his pocket

Subaru, in a masterful, elegant show of gracefulness and skill, went from battle ready technique to prostrating within seconds… mid-air

"Please, forgive me! It was my fault, I swear! Don't hurt me!" The muggers walked up to Subaru, the two he'd hit looked furious, their rage very much visible on their face as they started kicking and stomping Subaru, who was now lying in the foetal position, hands clamped around his head in an attempt to reduce the damage being done to his head, a poor attempt as it did little to nothing to protect him

"You think this is some sort of game, huh!? Funny is it!?" they continuously stomped, kicked and struck him till what sounded like the soft chiming of a bell-like voice shout from behind the muggers, maybe this was his supposed heroine in his isekai fantasy?

"You three, stop right now!" A silver haired woman exclaimed from behind the three criminals with her hands pointed out and a small cat floating to her side, large shards of ice forming out of nowhere, the muggers panicked slightly and back peddled a few feet

"H-hey now, we don't want any trouble now missy, just turn around and walk away" the bigger tanned one walked up a bit, using a cautious tone of voice while approaching her while the others backed up to Subaru, keeping their distance from the stranger

"Then give back what you stole from me this instant! You know, the insignia!" The silver haired beauty spoke, calling to the muggers but their confused stares and faces gave the porcelain skinned newcomer second thoughts

While all of this was going on, a certain young black-haired man tried his very best to stand up, the newcomer may not have been able to see it, but the muggers were inching forwards slowly and subtly, but Subaru noticed it and before he knew it, he had stood up and ready for if anything went down

As the criminals inched forwards, the floating grey cat narrowed its eyes slightly almost as if sensing their intentions but didn't react for now and let the situation play out as is, the young pale skinned woman still looking at the muggers and Subaru with apprehension and a level of anxiety but kept her face relatively calm

The muggers nodded to each other tactfully and carefully followed up by the smallest one speaking up next "We didn't steal no insignia lady, we just came here to rob this guy, and judgin' by your expression, ya don't know him…"

"if you are asking whether me and that man in the strange clothes over there know each other, then I would have to say no and if you don't have my insignia then I guess I should just leave"

Subaru's supposed heroine had turned around to leave but that's when the muggers struck, the two taller ones rushed her, both unsheathing blades from makeshift belts whilst screaming at the top of their lungs "Don't get too cocky li'l missy, we ain't afraid of ya!"

Two giant ice crystals slammed straight into the two taller ones but the smaller one was able to get under the ice and close in fairly quickly, too quickly and thus, the newcomer couldn't react in time and was seconds from a life threatening stab wound

"I'll kill you! Die you bastard!" The smallest one screamed as he brought the knife closer to her throat, time seemed to slow down as Subaru was witnessing what was about to be murder and he couldn't do anything, so he stood there as an innocent person was about to die, he felt useless, afraid but more importantly, like nothing could be done

'but you can do something, you can still breathe, you can still stand… you can still fight' Subaru's inner thoughts clashed and divided into two, flashes of a man draped in crimson followed by wrought iron drew into his mind, but more would be needed to solidify his drive 'But what if I fail, what if she dies or what if I die?! I can't help her, I can't help anybody! …why do I always screw everything up'

Subaru's body trembled and shook at the thought of her dying, goosebumps spread across his skin and his hair stood on end as adrenaline shot through every inch of his body 'She's going to die! You have to do something, anything! Please, even if it's for your own sake, do something! Quickly!' Subaru looked up, the knife practically grazing her throat as her face twisted into a visage of despair and fear, it was horrible to look at but, this one scene gave him courage, he had to do something 'I…I don't want anyone to look so afraid, so... I have to do something, right!?'

It was too late, Subaru's legs wobbled and his knees buckled, feeling his vision darken around the edges, he asked, pleaded, begged his body to move 'please, just once more… is all I need…!' however, it was too late and his vision blurred and he saw blood drawn but it wasn't the woman's, rather his own, trickling down his lips, he willed himself once more, gathering all of his energy, determination and strength left and he tried, struggled even and he took a step

The step echoed out through the alleyway and the mugger and the woman stopped for a second

'Arrrrggghhh, nghk, keep going…! Push through the pain and do something, anything!' another step, and another and another until he was in a sprint, bruises, scrapes and dirt littering his body and clothes as the mugger looked on in shock

With each step, the pain increased tenfold then hundredfold then thousandfold, but even so, with someone in need of help right in front of him, where he could reach, he wouldn't just stop yet, he couldn't stop yet

'I can't stop now, not now and not ever!' with the final push and the unbearable pain reaching its limits, Subaru was practically on top of them but could feel himself slowly shutting down, desperate to reach her, he increased his speed and nearly tumbled over, barely catching himself Subaru begged to whoever was watching over him, if anybody was, to help him

And a voice in the back of his head answered his call

'Maybe… you are worthy'

And a surge of electricity shot through every nerve in his body as he shot up and screamed at the top of his lungs and threw a fist straight into the criminals mouth, cracking a few teeth and throwing him a couple of feet away, the knife just millimetres from the woman's throat now clanging against the hard rock floor of the dark and dingy alleyway along with the now unconscious mugger, the girl collapsed to the floor on her knees with tears in her eyes as Subaru stood before her, legs quivering and his entire body swaying as he fought to stay conscious

Turning to the girl, a warm and welcoming smile on his face, he spoke with contentedness as his voice reached her ears

"It's ok now, I promise you now you're ok…" And he fell to the ground, finally falling unconscious and accepting the alluring beckoning of dreamland

The young silver haired woman rushed over and made sure he hadn't broken anything when a second voice peered round from the corner, bright alabaster uniform, striking red hair, sky blue eyes and a mighty dragon encrusted sword by his hip

"Greetings Miss, I am Reinhard Van Astrea"

Hey guys, sorry for the shorter chapter but I didn't know how to get this to the right length without making it too long or too cut up so I finished it here and you'll probably have noticed that this is on both the original story and the new Redux version, this is so that those who don't know about the new rewrite don't miss out on it and know what is happening, anyway as you know I'm rewriting this and a few major things will be different but anyway, I hath returned to my writing and plan on staying, apart from that, I hope you enjoyed this chapter :)
