*listen to "despair in the departure lounge" by arctic monkeys for best experience*
there are a bunch of song references in this oneshot (all to "despair in the departure lounge") so i also recommend looking up the lyrics and their meaning if you want to get the most out of this oneshot :)
i absolutely adore this song and i hope you all enjoy this, i had a lot of fun writing it
No TW but its generally a sad story
3rd Person P.O.V.
Dream dragged his suitcase behind him, stepping onto the moving sidewalk in the Orlando airport. He was finally back home after three months across the ocean, and despite coming back to everything he had been missing, he couldn't feel happy. Because to be in Florida meant he wasn't with George.
The Orlando airport had sparked excitement and joy in Dream just three months ago, but now all he knew was the despair and loneliness of not having George with him. Nothing about Florida could even compare to the brunette boy and his snarky, strange humor. Nothing could cheer Dream up at this point, because he needed George. But he was all the way across an ocean.
Dream sighed, shoulders slumping as he stepped off the moving sidewalk and started heading towards the exit. He hadn't even left the airport yet, and he was already miserable.
This feeling of despair had begun on the plane, the reality of the situation finally kicking in. The TV in the back of the seat in front of him played some show, and– briefly– his mind had been taken off of George. Dream laughed, watching a scene where a man– Del, if his memory served him right– fell flat on his face into a bar. His laughter died down, however, as he watched further, seeing George and himself in the characters.
It weighed down on him. George wasn't there to hold his hand when the plane landed, he wasn't there waiting for Dream in the airport, he was just... nowhere.
The thought of George not being here made Dream feel a bit ill. After three months of spending every waking second with the brunette, the lack of his presence was even more apparent.
Dream made it out the doors of the airport, stepping out into the humid Florida air. Reality was kicking in the further he got from the airport– the further he got from George. He had lost a bit of something the second he had boarded that plane to Florida, and even though he needed to return to America, had it really been worth the heartache?
Dream unlocked his car, sitting in the driver's seat and rolling the windows down to try and remove the hot, stale air that had been brewing since he left for England.
He let out a long breath, resting his forehead against the hot steering wheel. George was still nowhere near him. The thought of this was closely followed by fear– fear of him and George drifting apart, or of George moving on and forgetting about him... and the thought of it made him feel a bit ill.
Oh, if only Dream knew that, across the ocean, George was going through a similar bout of emotion.
The brunette had to let Dream go at the gate, watching the taller man disappear into the crowd as the clock struck one. A feeling of despair came over him, one that wouldn't go away so easily. George waited in the airport until three, even though Dream's plane was set to take off at two. He waited, because he had hope that the blond would change his mind and come back to George, sweeping the smaller boy up in a hug and kissing him passionately.
But he never came back. Eventually, George had to leave the airport– his phone had no signal, and was running out of battery as well. As they stepped out of their respective airports, both Dream and George had the same thought run through their minds:
What's happened to me?
ok I wrote that in like 45 minutes but I'm lowkey so proud of it
I made a LOT of song references in this and again, I recommend looking up the lyrics and the meaning to catch them all :)
anyways I'm thinking about doing more songfics like this, I already have a list of songs (mostly arctic monkeys) that I want to write fics for so keep an eye out for those!
