Chapter 31
Truthfully Caroline had thought working with Rebekah would be worse than that.
The first day, the first thing that had left Rebekah lips was that she was late, which she wasn't, two minutes didn't count. Caroline hadn't risen to the bait and instead steeled herself to weather the insults the other blond would throw her way that day.
They got to work, Caroline showing Rebekah the books and explaining what was what, like Gloria had once shown her.
Rebekah was actually a studious learner and listened to her. That had been the first thing that had surprised Caroline, after all until now Rebekah Mikaelson had only appeared as a spoiled princess in her eyes. But then again she only caught glimpses of the other girl.
As they worked together to make sure the Mystic was ready for the reopening they also got to know each other better. Caroline quickly understood that Rebekah scathing remarks often wasn't meant to hurt, she still was a bit of a bitch, but her dry wit was also quite funny sometimes. Rebekah in turn learned that Caroline wasn't a pretty empty head and that she had strong opinions on which she could be pretty stubborn.
All in all they came to an understanding if not friendship yet.
Today they were hiring new staff. They needed at least two more waitresses and one bartender. Not all of Gloria staff had chosen to come back, Sylvia had but with Matt gone, they were short of hands behind the bar.
"Your name ?" Rebekah asked bored. It was the third candidate already.
"Joshua Rosza." Nervously answered the young man before them. Despite his tall stature, he seemed intimidated by them. Rebekah tended to have that effect. And to be honest Caroline too, if she wanted to.
"Do you have any experiences ?" Caroline asked with a smile to make him relax.
"Some. My grandfather owned a bar, but he closed it down a few years ago."
Because of the prohibition was left unsaid.
The interview went on, and Caroline felt pretty good about this candidate. Still, they had more to see. By the end of the day, they probably had seen dozens of people. They hired three new waitresses and both agreed on Joshua for the bartender position.
"And how long will it be until I need to hire a new bartender ?" Rebekah nonchalantly asked her, while inspecting her nails.
"What do you mean ? We just did." Caroline raised an eyebrow.
"I'm asking how long until you resign because Klaus want you all to himself." Rebekah looked her straight in the eyes.
Caroline startled in surprise.
"We haven't been together for that long." She turned her eyes away from the other girl.
"Klaus doesn't get attached easily, but he is quite the possessive wanker when he does."
Her words made Caroline feel warm. But she replied lightly.
"Why does it sound like a threat ?"
Rebekah shrugged.
"Klaus might be an arse, but he's my brother too." She said before turning around and leaving Caroline alone with her thoughts.
-O-
Marcel had soon been caught up on everything that happened while he was locked up. By Klaus, by Rebekah and by Diego. Klaus had told him about the raid on the Mystic and the involvement of the Salvatore, making Marcel fist clench in anger at the Italians. Surprisingly Klaus had apologized about Gloria, saying his priority had been to get Rebekah and Kol out first back then.
Family always came first to the Mikaelsons, no matter how cross with one another, they were at any given time, it's why Marcel had always felt close to them, he had the same belief. It's just that recently he doubted on whether the Mikaelsons saw him as family as much as he saw them as his.
He knew that Rebekah loves him, but he wasn't sure if it was enough to survive in her family.
When he talked to Diego, his friend told him he'd continued to investigate the rumors and found at least one police informant had been spreading them. He already suspected as much, Inspector Coleman was smart, it wouldn't have been difficult at all for him to pull it off.
Marcel had just visited the church to light a candle for his Aunt. It was evening already when he stepped out of the church to go home, thoughts churning as always since he'd been back. When he heard an altercation ahead of him.
"I told you to leave me alone !" Glowered a girl to three men.
Not Mikaelson's men... Marcel narrowed his eyes.
"Come on Doll, I promise you'll have fun." One of them leered at her, the two others laughing crassly.
"Hey, isn't she that gypsy, Kol Mikaelson's woman ?" Another man squinted at her.
Davina stiffened and was going to tell them what Kol would do to them for trying anything with her and that she'd help her husband do it, when the third man caught her in a grip.
"Now be nice and let us taste a Mikaelson delicacy and maybe we'll be nice to you." His breath stank so close to Davina and she struggled more.
"Get off me !" She trashed, managing to elbow the man in his ribs none too gently.
"Fuck ! Help me hold down the little witch !" He barked to his friends.
However, he suddenly found himself thrown to the ground and soon the others two joined him. Unsure of what happened, he raised his head and paled.
Marcel stood before Davina, looking down on the lowlifes.
"When did three Salvatore dogs were allowed to cause trouble in our part of town ?" He smiled dangerously and they scrambled up to run away.
Once they were gone, he turned to the girl.
"You're Marcel." She said, observing him with curiosity.
"And you must be Davina."
He still couldn't believe Kol was married, when Bekah told him, he thought she was playing him.
"You shouldn't walk around alone, it's not safe, especially this late in the day."
"Who are you ? My dad ?" She sassed him.
Marcel found himself amused by her, and as he walked her home, he found he liked the girl.
As soon as they opened the Mikaelson's house door, Kol descended on them, well he ignored Marcel presence and wrapped Davina in his arms.
"Where were you ?!"
"Finally you're here, good thing too, Kol was starting to go insane with worry." Rebekah appeared teasing until she saw who else was there. "Marcel ?"
"Huh, Marcel ?" Kol raised his head from his wife's hair, as if noticing him only just now, while Davina tried to push him off her, rolling her eyes when he tightened his hold on her instead.
"I met him on the way here." She said.
"She means, I rescued her from three Salvatore's thugs and then walked her home." Marcel added.
"What ?" Kol went dangerously still, a murderous look appearing in his eyes.
"I'm fine." Davina put her hand on her husband's cheek and made him look her in the eyes.
"You know I'd never tell you what to do, but please next time don't go out alone." Sighed Kol, the dangerous aura surrounding him dissipating.
"Okay." Davina nodded.
"Now that that's taken care of, Marcel stay for dinner ?" Rebekah came to Marcel side smiling.
"I don't know Becah..."
"The more the merrier. Keelin always cooks enough to feed an army anyway." Freya smiled to the two couples in the foyer, from the dining room door embrasure. "Klaus and Elijah should be here soon, don't all stay here and come on in." She commanded before disappearing further back in.
Kol followed after her, hand holding Davina's. Rebekah smiled at him, a hopeful look in her eyes.
"Well, we have our orders." He finally said, holding an arm out for Rebekah. She took it smiling brightly, and kissed his cheek.
"I love you."
"Love you too Princess."
-O-
"What do you think ?"
Klaus stayed silent for a moment, rolling a bullet in between his fingers.
"If the matter of the De Martell is true, then they are even more dangerous than I suspected and I do not like that. We'll need to do some digging of our own, discreetly of course. We wouldn't want to alert them." He finally said, narrowing his eyes. "As for your new friend, we can use her."
"She won't let herself be used and thrown away." Warned Elijah.
Klaus raised an eyebrow at that. If Elijah defended her it meant he actually liked her, the woman had apparently impressed his older brother. Then again Klaus did not exactly trust Elijah judgement when it came to women, as history proved him right. He would have to meet her himself.
"She will, from what you said, she'll let us use her as much as she can use us in return."
Elijah nodded, his opinion was the same. Klaus continued.
"The Mystic is ready for the reopening, send an invitation to Lady Kenner."
Josh is here, Davina and Marcel met. Next chapter: party at the Mystic.
