Golden Hour

(Flufftober 2021 Day 3 – Lazy Sundays)

Hizashi, even on his days off, rose with the sun.

Golden light lit up his closed eyelids. With a slow stir, the blonde hummed, shifting his body under the covers. Air flooded his lungs, and a wave of energy and awareness washed over his body.

Sleep just as quickly replaced the sudden rush, and the blonde's hair tangled as his forehead ground into his pillow.

Green eyes stayed cracked open, taking in the beauty of the illuminated bedroom.

Some of the cats, most likely let in by one of their kids, curled up in the piles of worn clothes decorating the floor. A tortoiseshell and orange tabby curled into each other on the crumpled remains of Shouta's hero outfit. The Siamese cat, one of their newest members of the family, lifted and stretched against Hizashi's leather jacket, kneading the material with loving paws.

The chair at their shared desk (or really, Shouta's desk) was pulled away, and another cat was curled up fast asleep on the wooden seat. Shouta's laptop, left open, was off for the time being, and several papers that still had yet to be graded littered the open spaces on the desk's surface.

Everything else in the room—from the bookcases with informational novels and hanging shelves with tiny plants and framed photographs—glowed a soft orange with the light pouring through the same-colored curtains.

He hummed, relaxing against the mattress.

Fingers, wrapped around his sleep shirt, squeezed the material just a little tighter.

A smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. His left hand reached over to the little nightstand next to the bed and wrapped around one of the hearing aids in its case. With a practiced motion, he slipped it onto his left ear and flicked on the aid.

Shouta's murmuring came into his hearing range.

Hizashi laid his free hand over one of Shouta's, giving the other man's fingers a loving squeeze. "Speak up," he teased. "Can't hear my sleeping prince with all his mumbling."

"Don' leave…" Shouta's voice was gravelly from sleep. His forehead pushed against the back of Hizashi's neck, nuzzling against his husband's warm skin. "First day off together… stay…" His body snuggled up closer to his husband's, clearly eager for Hizashi to not move from his spot.

After all the work he had done just over the past week alone, there was little motivating Hizashi to get out of bed.

The Siamese cat hopped onto the bed, sniffing Hizashi's waist before climbing on top of him. Tiny paws kneaded his hip, and pleading meows came from a sharp-toothed mouth.

The blonde's stomach growled loudly with the cries of the kitty.

His free hand stroked the cat's back before reaching back to tangle in Shouta's long hair. "I gotta get up and feed the cats and us."

"No."

"I'll only be a minute."

Another growl from yet another hungry stomach came from Shouta's side of the bed as he pulled Hizashi closer to him.

The tease lined his smile before he could stop it. "You're hungry too… I promise I'll be right back. Just long enough to get us some coffee and breakfast."

"Get the jelly packets…"

"There's already prepped miso soup and some rice in the fridge." Hizashi ran his fingers through Shouta's hair. "All I have to do is reheat them and bring them in on a little tray so we can eat in bed."

"'s too long…"

The Siamese cat meowed at Shouta, sounding offended that one of its caretakers would suggest withholding food for any longer than they expected. It leapt off the bed, meowing for Hizashi to follow.

Hizashi stirred, drawing his hand back and gently unhooking his husband's hand from his shirt. "You heard her. Gotta feed her highness and the other cats before they bring in the army."

"mm…"

"And then there's feeding the kids before the cats hassle them and they come to check on us…"

"mmmm…"

Hizashi chuckled under his breath, pushing his torso up. Before he could slip out of bed, Shouta's hand rolled the blonde's body to face his husband's.

The blonde kept his hearing aid from rubbing against the pillow by lifting his head with a bent arm. "Hm? Are you trying to hold me hostage in my own bed?"

Shouta huffed, clearly fighting himself from falling back asleep. "Promise me you'll come back to bed a little longer?" There was a touch of plea in his usual emotionless tone, and it gave Hizashi a perfect picture of how badly his husband wanted to sleep with him.

A loving sigh left the blonde, and he ran his hand over Shouta's face, scooping aside the black hair and tucking it behind his ear. Dark eyes, framed between heavy eyelids, tracked the slow movements. With gentle care, Hizashi leaned forward and pressed a soft kiss just below his husband's hairline. "I'll be back, my sleepy prince. Lemme feed the cats and tell the kids we'll be sleeping longer."

Shouta's hand dropped from Hizashi's side to the bed and a little hum left him before he relaxed against his pillow.

As the blonde rose from the bed and stretched, the cats that had previously been sleeping leapt to their feet. A chorus of needy meows reached Hizashi's ear. "Alright, alright, little listeners, I'm comin'… Yeesh! So demanding…"

It was hard to get to the door with cats trying to rub up against his calves, but Hizashi dodged around the horde of animals and reached for the cracked-open door. Shinso had the highest chance besides Shouta to be asleep at the current hour, and while Eri knew to keep quiet when the others were sleeping, she had a penchant for letting the cats lead her into doing something she wasn't supposed to do.

As he stepped around the cats and door, he took one last look at his bed.

Light filtered through the curtains and bathed Shouta's sleeping form in a faint halo of warm orange. His husband would scoff at Hizashi's thought, but the blonde was sure seeing Shouta like that was one of the most wonderful sights he got to see in his life. And the fact that Hizashi could come back to be a part of it?

Warm love flooded Hizashi's chest, and the smile on his face refused to fall away. He turned, leaving the door open for his return, and followed the cats to the kitchen.

If true love's kiss was enough to stir a sleepy prince from his dreams, then Hizashi would hold off on kissing his prince awake for a little while longer.

This took me a while, but H, I think I'm starting to get the hang of these two more. I had a ton of fun writing this, and thank you all so much for reading and supporting! :D
