Chapter 10
General Hammond sent a contingency of men to Abydos to counter attack Thanos as the Jaffa spies confirmed there was to be an attack on the planet to get the stone. SG-1 led the trap with the Avengers and the added military teams waiting for the enemy to arrive.
Jack was hunkered down behind a stone structure for cover. He looked through his binoculars at the Gate sitting in the distance. His mouth tugged up at the corner and he glanced at his watch. Thanos appeared to be late to Jack's estimation.
Tony Stark was beside Jack. He donned military battle dress but on his right hand he sported the red metallic glove from his suit. He managed to rig the energy cannon to the Arc reactor for some extra fire power. How he wished he had his suit going once more. He asked for his own lab to build a new suit but Hammond refused sighting budget cuts and the immediate threat of Thanos. In this new reality, the military seemed more stingy with technology in his opinion. He too looked through the binoculars at the Gate waiting for some sign of life. He puckered in thought. "I figured Thanos would have shown up by now."
"Me too." Jack agreed.
Meanwhile, Sam found herself near Steve as they took cover in wait as well. They chatted as they waited all while keeping an eye on the Gate in the distance.
Steve mentioned, "Your brother Mark is a cop in my reality. He's married and has two kids. You guys on good terms here?"
"Better terms," she nodded. "Kind of rough for a while. I like seeing the kids."
"Great kids." he agreed. "You, in my reality, were dating this cop that is friends with your brother. His name is Pete."
She cocked an eyebrow, "Why are you telling me this? I don't know any cop named Pete." She pinched her lips tight as her bother had suggested she go on a date with a friend of his who was a police officer.
Steve stated, "I'm just giving you a heads up. You nearly married the guy but he was following you around all over the place. Kind of nosey." He had to admit, "Rodney is a better choice over Pete."
She rolled her eyes, "I won't go out with a cop named Pete." She cocked her head and gave him a look, "Still think I should date Daniel?"
He blushed, "it's not my business who you date. Daniel is a good choice. I like Jack too."
She reminded him, "He's my C.O."
He suggested, "Not if you worked for SHIELD."
"We don't have SHIELD." she reminded him.
He smirked, "We're working on that." He hinted towards a new program.
She rolled her eyes, "For crying out loud."
Meanwhile, Daniel was situated behind the stone pillar for cover. Beside him was Thor who was ready for battle. He wished he had his hammer or any Asgard weapon would do. He was stuck with a rifle and a sidearm that he simply found inadequate.
Thor stated, "Thanos is late."
Daniel agreed, "Seems the Jaffa had the wrong time."
"Or Thanos purposely gave the wrong time." Thor began to suspect Thanos allowed bad information to be leaked to them.
"I suppose he could have gotten wind of this." Daniel agreed.
The Gate in the distance began to come to life. The dial-in started as each chevron locked.
Thor warned, "Prepare for whatever Thanos sends through."
"Yeah," he agreed with a nod.
The event horizon established but no one came though. A radio signal was soon picked up. It was general Hammond calling from Star Gate Command.
"SG-1! Colonel O'Neill. Return to base immediately." The General's voice was strained.
Over the radio came Jack's voice, "General?"
With a heavy sigh the General replied, "I just got a distress call from the Nox. It turns out they had a stone and Thanos just attacked them. Took them down. Refugees are coming to Earth. Return to base Colonel."
"Yes sir," Jack's voice replied.
Daniel looked at Thor. He gulped, "The Nox are as advanced as the Asgard."
"Thanos will attack my counterpart next." Thor warned.
Frustrated Daniel felt as if they were falling behind as Thanos seemed to be one up on them at all times. Their trap failed and Thanos sent bad information to keep them in Abydos as he went after the Nox for a stone that Daniel had not even known about. Thanos proved to be every bit the enemy that the Avengers warned him about.
Star Gate Command
Upon returning to base the two teams gathered in the meeting room with General Hammond and Lya of the Nox. Lya sat at the table with a distraught appearance. She was debriefed on the Avengers and the mirror was well as Thanos's origins.
She informed, "Thanos attacked us in waves. The first attack resulted in many dead and injured. He then sent a second wave before we could respond. Then a third wave as we attempted to heal and revive our dead. The third wave was the worst. The third wave killed my family when they were attempting to revive me. He knew exactly how and when to attack. Our cities have been destroyed. He gained the Infinity Stone we had guarded for eons."
Tony asked, "Which stone did you have?"
Lya replied, "The mind stone. The yellow stone."
Steve and Tony traded glances. Steve stated, "Vision's stone."
Daniel asked, "Who is Vision?"
Tony stated, "One of the Avengers."
Jack wondered, "How many Avengers had stones?"
"A few." he confessed. He looked to Lya, "I am so sorry about your family." He felt guilty for bringing Thanos to the other reality. "I tried to stop him. I didn't mean to bring him here."
"I know." she agreed. "I saw your fight, your war and how you sacrificed."
Daniel asked, "You can see what happened in Tony's reality?"
She nodded, "If you open up your mind you can see beyond space and time including other realities." She looked to the Avengers, "My people underestimated Thanos and his intelligence. Thanos believes he can make this reality into his vision of peace and prosperity. He is misguided in his thinking. Our arrogance was thinking we could reason with him and show him the way. He established relations with us to gain intel befor his attack. Foolishly, we thought we could contain Thanos and rehabilitate him."
Hammond figured, "The Nox tried to help him and he used that against you and attacked."
"Yes," she admitted. She warned, "He will come for the Asgard next. They have the tesserac which contains the space stone. It is blue in color."
Jack asked, "Just how many of these stones are there?"
"Seven to my knowledge." she informed.
Hammond asked, "Do you know the locations of these stones, Lya?"
"I know of three. The Asgard's stone, the stone my people held and the Furling's stone. I do not know where the other four are." Lya informed.
Daniel pressed, "Where do we find the Furling's stone?"
She began, "The Ancient ones had great cities much like our great cities. They had two great cities each with a stone. The Ancient ones hid the Furling's stone in the city ship of Atlantis."
The table fell silent as everyone traded glances.
Daniel cocked his head, "Atlantis?"
Lya confirmed, "That is correct."
"Where do we find Atlantis, Lya?" he pressured.
She admitted, "I do not know. The Ancient ones hid it."
Tony asked, "Like…Plato's Atlantis?"
Daniel nodded, "Much of our legends are based on alien events. I usually find clues digging through old text books or from glyphs I find off world." He looked to Lya as he spoke, "Least now we know there really is an Atlantis and it's a city ship. We didn't know that until now, Lya."
Hammond cautioned, "It could be years before we find Atlantis, Dr. Jackson and we have no idea if the stone will even be there once we find it."
Thor spoke up, "As much as this pains me to say but my brother, Loki may be of some assistance. He is very good at finding clues in old text books."
Hammond rebutted, "We have placed Loki under 24 hour guard and he has proven to be a major nuisance for our people here in the S.G.C. I fear he will escape."
"Trust me," Thor rebutted, "If Loki wanted to escape he would have done so already. Your recreation room cannot hold him."
Tony wondered, "Just what is Loki doing in the recreation room anyways?" He then admitted, "I'm surprised he's been out of our hair this long to be honest."
Hammond explained, "Dr. Frasier and Walter have been keeping him entertained."
Tony asked, "Doing what?"
He replied, "Board games."
Thor rose to his feet.
Hammond asked, "Thor?"
"I shall go and check on my brother." he stated concerned. He abruptly left the meeting to see what kind of trouble Loki has been in.
Tony and Steve then stood up as well.
"We better go see what Loki is doing." Steve agreed.
"Right behind ya, Cap." Tony agreed.
Recreation Room
Loki found the more time he spent with Janet Fraise the more he liked her. She reminded him of his mother in many ways as she was kind and yet firm with him. He also liked Walter Harriman as he was an average man who seemed to actually enjoy his time with Loki though he was ordered to play board games and keep on eye on the being. Loki discovered the only two people on Earth he actually liked was a medical doctor and the technician who ran the Star Gate.
They sat playing monopoly. Loki wiggled in his seat, sporting plain green battle dress uniform with no patches or insignia. He grabbed the dice and rolled. He grinned, "Six." He then grabbed the top hot piece and counted the spaces. "Chance." He admitted, "I like this game."
Janet sat amused, "You don't have monopoly where you are from, Loki?"
"Nothing like this on Asgard." he agreed. "This reminds me of when I was young and my mother would play games with my brother and I." He took the card, "Past go and collect 100 dollars." he read. He then moved the game piece as Walter who was also the game's banker handed him 100 dollars in play money.
Walter stated, "Sounds like you had a very loving mother, Loki."
"She was one of a kind." he agreed. "Only woman who I ever cared about." he confessed. He mentioned, "You remind of her, Dr. Frasier."
She gave a soft smile, "I'm glad I remind you of someone positive in your life, Loki." She picked up the dice to roll when the door opened wide to the recreation room.
Thor stepped inside expecting to see some kind of catastrophe. Instead, he found the base doctor rolling the dice for a board game with Loki and Walter sitting at the table. He glared at his brother, "What are you doing?"
"Monopoly!" he replied somewhat amused for he knew Thor was suspicious of his intent.
Janet and Walter both agreed. Janet stated, "We have been playing board games, Thor. Loki is winning. He's real good at monopoly."
Walter agreed, "He's a shrewd businessman."
"Is this some kind of trick, brother?" Thor accused.
Tony and Steve walked into the room behind Thor followed by Jack and Daniel who came to ensure everything was okay.
Loki rose to his feet peeved at his brother for the lack of trust. "I have done nothing brother. I have sat here in this recreation room as I have been requested to do." He then walked over to Tony and Steve and got directly in their faces. "I must say, I like this version of Earth much better than your version. They lack any Avengers and it is glorious." He then sauntered towards his brother, "I actually made friends here, brother. And no SHIELD to try to trap me or that hulk…" he shivered at the recollection.
Janet stood up and spoke, "We were asked to keep an eye of you, Loki. Walter and I agreed to play the board games because we didn't want you sitting alone in here all by yourself being bored. We understand you had some issues in your reality but as long as you keep it clean and behave yourself in our reality we won't hold it against you. We gave you a clean slate. Don't throw it away just because you and Thor have some issues."
He took her warning to heart. Loki didn't wish to lose the friendship of the only two humans he ever liked. He stepped back, "I assure you that I will be on my best behavior. Thor, however I cannot attest for."
"I'm not the one who plays tricks, brother." he scoffed.
Janet shook her head, "You two would really benefit from some family counseling."
Jack took a step closer to Loki and whispered, "I'm going to give you fair warning. You don't screw around with Frasier. Understand?"
Loki assured him, "I have nothing but respect for the good doctor."
Janet added, "And if he gives me any issues I will jam a needle in his ass with a sedative."
Loki turned on his heels and gave a dramatic gasp, "Me! How could you say such a thing?"
Jack assured, "She will shove a needle in your ass. Believe me!"
