Chapter 66: Sonic's confession

Early on Sonic bailed on sally. He went for a run through the forest. He runs around in the millions of redwood. He thinks about she said earlier. It ran through his head about Amy and him being jealous. He cringes his face and has images of Amy in his head. All his adventures. Everytime he saved her. he tries shaking it off but can't. His heart is beating fast. Faster than him. He breathes in and out to keep his cool and composure. He makes it to the river that leads down towards knothole. He enters the village running everywhere. Tails, Bunnie and Rotor sit at an outside diner and hears the wind pick up. He knows when his best buddy is around and looks behind him. Sonic running through the village. Everyone knows him all to well. It's his home turf. Always has been. Sonic turns towards the diner and meets next to tails.

Tails: "Oh hey Sonic."

Bunnie: "Hey, where's sally?"

Sonic: "Oh she's on her way. Hey yo! One soda please!"

Waiter: "You got it dawg."

He puts his dollar down and grabs his can and gulps the whole thing down.

Rotor: "Geez bud what's the rush?"

Sonic: "Don't worry about it. I'll be around guys."

Tails: "Hey wait-"

He blasts off before tails could say anything. He runs through the town and through the forest.

Bunnie: "He sure seems like he's busy."

Tails: "He shouldn't be. Maybe we should check on him.

She walks in the forest looking for him. Knothole is still the same as ever. There's a road of torch lights. She walks down it seeing people and kids playing. Outpost still working. The old freedom fighter hq is still the same as ever. They kept it neat. She walks throughout the forest that's lit up. It brings some nostalgia back to her mind. Good memories. She crosses the river waving hi to old friends still roaming the trees. She follows down the river and looks up at the tall trees. ziplines everywhere. Boardwalks. She looks around and see's footsteps on the ground. Hard imprints of Sonic's shoes she recognizes. They're everywhere. Even near the diner. She notices the crew still there. She walks over to them.

Bunnie: "Hey sally girl!"

Sally: "Hey guys. I guess he was here?"

Tails: "He was here not too long ago. Just ordered a soda and left."

Sally: "I see he was busy."

Bunnie: "He was running around like a crazy road runner."

Sally: "I see."

She sits down with the crew. She orders her a coffee.

Tails: "So what's wrong with sonic?"

Sally: "I… I couldn't tell you."

Bunnie: "Did something happen to him?"

Sally: "You could say that?"

The waiter comes up with her coffee and blows in it. Bunnie takes a real good look into her. She knows when she's upset. Or worried.

Bunnie: "Sal."

She looks at the half cybernetic bunny.

Sally: "Yes."

Bunnie: "What happened?"

Sally: "Nothing really. He decided to go for a run."

Bunnie: "Leaving a lady like you in the dust?"

She drinks her caffeine and looks down. She stares down at his footsteps. Bunnie follows her eye sight and notices the trail sonic left.

Tails: "Is there something wrong with aunt sally?"

Sally: "Nah. He's just a bit upset is all."

Bunnie: "Why?"

She finishes her coffee and decides to go look for him.

Sally: "It's personal Buns. Listen, do you guys know the direction he went?"

Bunnie: "Couldn't say. Y'know he's faster than the naked eye."

Tails: "Look at the ground. Look for the fresh tracks. Mans is a burn rubber."

Sally: "Thanks."

She walks away and follows the likely tracks.

Tails: "Can they just ty the knot already?"

Bunnie: "I know you ain't talking? Speaking of which, how is she doing?"

He blushes and squints his eyes. He thinks about her.

Tails: "I wish I knew."

The princess scans through the town. The glowing torches and lights. She looks around at his footprints. He was running all over the place. His shoe markings everywhere. Like he was a child hooked on sugar. Really show's what Sally set off. She knows those words from earlier really set something off in Sonic. Something he's been keeping down in his head. The locals notice and try to clean them off. People know who did it but they're not surprised. It's his signature. His landmark. Hero of knothole. Kids take pictures of his work. Some brush it off. He even knocked over a trash can. Lights illuminating his tracks. There's a mudhole when he was a kid left and know he's bigger. Sally can picture it. This wasn't his fun run. It was his frustration.

Sally: "Oooohhhh… Oh Sonic… I had no idea you… You're still in love with her."

She looks around and notices a part of the place that he didn't run to. She goes there and scans the area. She looks around and still no blue hedgehog until a certain friend calls out to her.

Antoine: "If you're looking for him, he went that way!"

She turns around to see a friendly face. He is sitting next to three other freedom fighters from back then playing cards and he points the direction he walked.

Sally: "Thanks Ant."

He nods and places down his cards.

Antoine: "Read em and weep."

Man 1: "Aww come on."

Man 2: "Crap."

Man 3: "God damn pain in the ass."

She follows the direction the coyote pointed out. She looks around and keeps walking and remembers the way to a place she knows all too well. A place where Sonic goes mostly.

Sally: "Heh… Of course he would be there."

She walks down the path that has no torches or lights. It's getting darker. She makes her way through the tall grass and around a log that's been there for years. She can see her and him as kids playing around there. Discussing the missions. She sees his trail he made and a blue figure sitting on the ground hearing the frogs croak. Near a large body of water. Sonic's favorite place to think. She walks up without him noticing.

Sally: "I knew I'd find you here."

He jumps up from hearing someone behind him. Looks behind him to see a ghost of his past.

Sonic: "Geez, you scared me."

Sally: "Hope I didn't spook you."

Sonic: "Nah. I just didn't think you'd find me."

Sally: "I know you more than anyone. Looking for a power ring?"

Sonic: "Nah. Not this time."

Sally: "Sorry about earlier."

Sonic: "Nah, it's fine."

She sits down behind him. She rest her head behind him. She feels his heart beating fast but he doesn't say a word. She wraps her arms around him.

Sally: "You're really are in love with her, aren't you?"

He knows this is the part where he has to confess. He isn't the type to just let out his feelings but she really wants it out of him. He breaths in and accepts his fate. He tried running earlier but couldn't get his mind off what she said. There is no running from this. His heart stops and skips a beat when he opens his mouth.

Sonic: "Yeah."

Sound of despair.

Sally: "Figured. Your work in town shows a lot."

Sonic: "Heh, thought I could solve my problems by running."

Sally: "It's not always going to be like that, y'know."

Sonic: "Well that's all I know."

His heart calms down completely. He's relaxed.

Sally: "You want to talk about it?"

Sonic: "If you want."

Sally: "First question. Why did you run earlier?"

Sonic: "I was scared."

Sally: "Of what?"

Sonic: "Coming out of the blue. My heart felt like it was going to explode."

Sally: "Gosh. I was a bit hurt to see you burn out without me."

Sonic: "Yeah. Sorry about that. I didn't mean to ditch you."

Sally: "I should be apologizing for dragging that out of you."

Sonic: "Well you didn't intentionally wanted to. I just didn't feel like lying to you."

Sally: "Oh you did lie. You just didn't want to admit that you still have feelings for her."

Sonic: "How?"

Sally: "You said 100 words in less than 12 seconds remember.

*Flashback*

Sonic: *Talking Fastly* "Me? Jealous? No way. In fact, it's whatever. I'm totally cool with it. I'm actually more than cool with it. I'm happy for her. Can't you see I'm happy for her? I mean Shadow beat me to the punch. I wasn't that thirsty for her. I'm five thousand percent okay with them. It's his by right. How did those two fall in love? I don't know. not my business. Sonic: "Why what?"

Sally: "Why you never went out with her?"

Sonic: "I told you before. I never really considered her an option. Not that anything was wrong with her, it was just me. I honestly can see how bad she can be in a dangerous situation."

Sally: "That's nothing new. She can take care of herself."

Sonic: "Yeah right. I can think of a bunch of times where she almost got killed and I had to rescue her at the last second. There was this one time where I didn't see it coming."

Sally: "When?"

Sonic: "Back on the ark. She got shot."

Sally: "Really?"

Sonic: "Yeah. Shadow and Gloom saved her. I don't know how they did it, but they did."

Sally: "Who shot her?"

Sonic: "Asshole G.U.N. She was protecting Gloom. She was willing to get shot for him."

Sally: "Wow. But why?"

Sonic: "For shadow's sake I guess. Man, I'm worried it's gonna happen again."

Sally: "Like you said. Shadow was there right. He'll do the same for her."

Sonic: "There will be a time when he's not there to save her. Just like that girl Maria."

Sonic: "I mean her trying to catch me was one thing. Now I'm actually worried about her. The freakin irony."

She puts her head around his shoulder.

Sally: "Next question. Do you hate shadow?"

Sonic: "No. Not at all. In fact I got respect for the guy. He's a tough dude. Edgy guy sometimes but a reliable ally."

Sally: "Why are you so worried about him?"

Sonic: "I mean it's bad enough I live for the violence, but shadow attracts it. It's almost like it never ends for him. Like he has to pay for all the doctors mistakes."

Sally: "The way I see it. The stories I hear. He's the one actually trying to right the wrongs for his creator's mistakes."

Sonic: "He doesn't need to. Look where he comes from. Inter galactic aliens trying to take over the world."

Sally: "Did he betray us yet?"

Sonic: "No."

Sally: "Well he's fine. You can count on him. You need to get your head out of this hero mindset sometimes."

Sonic: "I can't. I'm a freedom fighter. I take that with pride. Can't stop, won't stop. I was blessed with this gift. It could've been anyone but it was me. If anyone is trouble. I'll be there."

Sally: "Didn't you say there would be a time you're not fast enough."

He goes quiet for a moment.

Sonic: "Yeah."

He looks at the water.

Sally: "You still think about him?"

Sonic: "Who?"

Sally: "Uncle chuck."

Sonic: "From time to time. I just figured he may have the answers."

Sally: "And what were you gonna ask him?"

Sonic: "Maybe I should've been with Amelia instead."

Sally: "Amelia?"

Sonic: "That's her actual full name. Amy for short."

Sally: "Wow, really? Didn't know that. Maybe you should've. I honestly see the two you. maybe in another time or another universe."

Sally: "And why you've been gone for two months?"

Sonic: "Well. Minus the need to get stronger, I needed more time to think. Think about the situations we were put in. Did I tell you she beat the shit out of me on the Ark? Broken my nose."

She stands up and walks around Sonic still listening.

Sonic: "She's a sweet girl. And fun to be around sometimes. I just didn't… I just wish I told her."

She squats down in front of him, getting a better look at him.

Sonic: "Sal?"

Sally: "What about me?"

Sonic: …

Sally: "Sonic. Please tell me."

He looks at her. He closes his eyes and stands up. She stands up and puts her hand on his chest. He holds her hand and drags it to his face.

Sally: "Yes."

She looks behind him to see a different hedgehog. His eyes full of contempt. He shuts the door behind him. He approaches her slowly. She backs up a bit and stops standing near her bed. He grabs her close and kisses her. She returns the favor following along. She gets mixed feelings. Shock, Fear, Enjoyment, Sadness. She does know where this is going. The moment he shut the door. Her legs trembling until Sonic holds her. He helps her back towards her bed. She sits down and stares down at the blue hedgehog. His demeanor unlike anything she hasn't seen before. His face blank of expression but there is something behind his look. Need. Something Needful. She knows what he wants.

Sonic: "You can tell me to stop."

Sally: "I know."

Sonic and her first date. Them as teenagers. Her adventures and travels. Her and her father. Sonic is her favorite beside her desk. The water can be heard running. Sonic looks at the picture on her wall. Her and Sonic as kids in Knothole. Everyone. Tails as an infant. He takes off his gloves and shoes off. He sits down on the bed. He thinks about Amy. She couldn't be further from his mind. What she's doing right now in Mercia. Probably having the time of her life. He decides to drop her and think about what's going to happen after she's done. His heart is racing faster and faster. He's a bit excited. Shock that he made it this far. This rush feels good. Better than anything that happens almost his whole life until the door opens. She starts getting sleepy. She lets out a yawn.

Sonic: "Same."

Sally: *Giggles* "Stay as long as you want." *Yawn*

Sonic: "Goodnight."

She starts falling asleep. It's midnight. It's quiet now. he could get up and go for a run, but all he can think about is this moment. His thoughts clear for now. He decides to blackout and follow her into sleep. His eyes getting weaker. His last thought process would be his parents and uncle chuck. Everything fades to black.
