A/N Kind of a sad chapter this time, but also a happy one. Dave and Edward find themselves in a position they hadn't really expected to find themselves in just yet. Thankfully, they have good friends to lean on.

Just Add Love

Blaine knocked on the door Saturday, just before lunch time. It was opened by Dave almost immediately.

"Oh, thank god you're here!" the larger man said with a sigh. "I didn't know who else to call."

"Don't worry about it," Blaine said, following Dave into the living room, where Edward was trying to calm a crying baby, while a six year old girl clung to him. Blaine recognized the look on the girl's face. Bee had worn that expression for weeks after his friend had died. He set the bags he was carrying down on the coffee table.

"I'll take this one," he said, gently scooping the baby from Edward's arms. "You two take care of…?" He didn't know the girl's name. He remembered seeing her at the wedding the weekend before, but couldn't recall her name.

"Cara," Dave supplied. "That's Tyler," he added, indicating the four month old Blaine now held.

Blaine nodded, and rummaged in one of the bags he'd brought for a diaper and wipes, and one of Phin's old onesies. He took the little boy into the bathroom, got the soiled diaper off of him, cleaned him up a bit, then decided to give him a bath in the sink to help soothe him, and then got him dressed in a clean outfit.

He returned to the living room to find Edward now seated on the couch, the little girl curled into his lap, nearly asleep as Dave read her a story. Not wanting to disturb them until he was sure the girl was asleep, Blaine carried the boy and another one of the bags into the kitchen and sat him down in his car seat for a few minutes as he made a pot of coffee. He then pulled bottles and formula out of the bag, as well as a large premixed salad and a tray of deli sandwiches.

He set the salad and sandwiches on the table, and then set about sterilizing the bottles before mixing a bottle of formula for the baby.

He'd gotten the call from Dave early that morning, and had gotten Lizzie and Bee and the quads ready and left them with Carole and Burt while he returned home and found some of Mattie and Phin's old outfits, and then hit the closest Target for the other clothes and supplies the two men would need.

They had picked up the kids just after midnight the night before, but the only supplies they'd had were the few diapers and things that had been in the diaper bag that had been pulled from the wreckage of the car. The luggage with the kid's clothes in it had been thrown out of the trunk, and run over by other cars trying not to crash into the already damaged car, and from the fire houses that had been used to try and keep the car from catching on fire before they could get the kids out.

Kelly and her family had been on their way back to St. Louis, Missouri, from Dave and Edward's wedding. They'd stayed an extra week to spend some time getting to know Edward's new husband before having to return to their lives. A semi driver had fallen asleep at the wheel, and crossed the double lines, and there had been nowhere for Max, Kelly's husband, to turn, as the road they'd been on was filled with Friday night traffic.

The coffee had just finished brewing when Edward and Dave entered the kitchen. Both men looked exhausted. "What time did you guys get home this morning?" he asked, pouring each of them a cup.

He knew it was just a little over an hour drive from Lima to Dayton, and it had been almost nine when the two men had left the dinner at the community center.

"We got there around ten thirty," Dave said, taking a sip from his cup. "We had to pass where the accident was to get to the hospital where they had taken the kids. They were still cleaning up the wreckage. There were four other smaller accidents caused by rubberneckers. Anyway, we got to the hospital, and had to talk to the police, show IDs and prove we were authorized to pick up the kids, but before that they wanted us to identify the bodies."

Edward let out a little sob. "I almost didn't recognize Kelly. My first thought was 'that's not her! Thank god, someone made a mistake, Kelly is still alive!' But of course it was her, and I felt so guilty for not recognizing her." Edward and Kelly had practically grown up together. Kelly's mother had been an unwed teen mom, the father having skipped out when he found out she was pregnant. After Kelly was born, her mom kind of just drifted out of her life, and Edward's parents had raised her. She and Edward were only two weeks apart in age, Edward being the eldest. His parents had never officially adopted Kelly, but they had treated her like a daughter.

Dave pulled him into a hug. "By the time we got all the legal issues and paperwork out of the way, it was almost three. Then we had to borrow child seats for them, because we couldn't use the ones from the car. We were both so exhausted by then, our only thoughts were to get them back here. We didn't even think about diapers or formula or anything else."

Blaine nodded. "Have either of you gotten any sleep? Or had anything to eat since last night?" They both shook their heads no. "I brought you salad and sandwiches for now. There's some yogurt and fruit for Cara when she wakes up, if you can get her to eat." Bee hadn't eaten for three days after the accident that had killed his friend. "If there is anything else you need, make a list and I'll see what I can do. Burt is going to bring over one of our cribs for you. Mattie and Phin have both adjusted to sleeping in regular beds, so we don't need it any more.

"And don't worry about groceries. Santana and Britt are picking up food for you all. And no, it's not all fast food. Your friends are cooking up freezable meals for you that you just need to heat and serve. So, eat, get cleaned up, and go get some sleep. I'll watch Cara and Tyler for now."

"Thanks, Blaine," Dave said.

"Yeah, thanks," Edward added.

Blaine worked on his notes for Monday's classes for a few hours while Dave and Edward slept. Tyler had fussed a little, and hadn't wanted to take the bottle Blaine had fixed him at first, but eventually he'd settled down as Blaine sang softly to him. Cara was sleeping so soundly, she didn't even wake up when Burt had knocked on the door to deliver the crib.

"How are they doing?" Burt asked softly, seeing the girl asleep on the couch.

Blaine shrugged. "I think Edward is still in shock. Dave is doing his best to hold him up, but I'm pretty sure there is a crash coming, metaphorically. This is a lot to take in at once. Married a week, and now they have a six year old and a four month old."

"Are they keeping the kids?" Burt asked "Or is this just temporary, until they can make other arrangements?"

"I don't know. I assume this is going to be a permanent situation, but maybe I'm reading it wrong. I don't think they've decided yet, actually."

The door to the main bedroom opened and Dave came out, closing it softly behind him. "Oh, hey, Mr. Hummel. Thanks for bringing the crib over."

"It's no problem, and how many times do I have to tell you to call me Burt? You're not a kid anymore." Dave just blushed.

"Did you get any sleep?" Blaine asked.

Dave nodded. "Yeah, I did. I just got up to get something to drink and check on the kids. Are they doing okay?"

Blaine smiled reassuringly at him. "Cara is still asleep, and Tyler will probably be waking up soon for a diaper change. Do you want me to get you something to eat?"

"Nah, I'll wait until Eddie gets up. I was just going to grab a bottle of water."

He had only taken a few steps towards the kitchen when a sound from the couch drew their attention. The little girl had begun to thrash in her sleep, and to cry out for her mommy. Dave immediately scooped her up and sat down with her in his lap, hugging her and rocking her.

"It's okay, sweetheart," he murmured softly to her. "Go ahead and cry. I'll hold you. Let it all out."

Edward came rushing into the room a moment later, dropping beside Dave on the couch and putting an arm around her as well. Blaine led Burt into the kitchen to give them some privacy.

Santana and Britt arrived just as Blaine and Burt finished setting up the crib in Xander's old room. Cara would sleep in there for now too, until they'd had the chance to convert the guest room into a room for her.

Cara had stopped crying, but hadn't gone back to sleep. After unloading the bags and boxes of prepared food everyone had sent over, and selecting a casserole to heat up, Santana had introduced herself to the girl, and sat beside her, as Brittany ran out to the store to pick up a few more things for the girl that Blaine hadn't thought of, such as a hair brush. Santana managed to coax the girl into talking about her mother, the things she used to like to do with her, and what she wanted from her old house to make her feel more at home here.

Dave thought the woman was a godsend. Neither he nor Edward had managed to get the girl to speak a single word.

Edward had been on and off the phone several times throughout the afternoon, speaking with various family members. He was currently talking with Max's parents. They lived just south of St. Louis, and had taken on the responsibility of going through Max and Kelly's house to start closing it out. Edward was listing off the things Cara had asked for, and they agreed to ship it as soon as possible.

They brought up the subject of custody. "Dave and I are going to adopt them, but I want you to see them as often as you want. They're your grandchildren, too."

That seemed to satisfy the older couple, and they hung up, promising to call again the next day to go over any other details that needed to be taken care of. Edward set the phone down, and looked up at Dave, realizing they hadn't even discussed the topic of adoption.

"I'm sorry, I just assumed, I should have asked you first," he said.

"Asked me what?" Dave said, confused, as he took the casserole out of the oven.

"Adopting the kids. We haven't even discussed having kids, and I just told Kelly's in-laws we were adopting their grandkids."

Dave frowned. "What's to discuss? We're adopting them. I thought you understood that last night?"

Edward looked a little sheepish. "I think I was still in a state of denial last night. We could have talked about building a star destroyer in the backyard and I don't think I would remember it."

Dave laughed softly at that. "They're our family now, Eddie. Our own little instant family. Just add love."

That brought a smile to Edward's face, and he stood up to hug his husband. "What about Xander?"

"What about him? He's excited and can't wait for the first chance to come home and meet his new brother and sister. I asked him when he thought he would have time, what with him going to Julliard full time, and taking online classes from Yale AND Harvard?"

Edward laughed and shook his head, just as Blaine and Burt came into the kitchen. After they'd finished assembling the crib, they'd gone through and child proofed the house. Santana was still sitting with Cara, and had even managed to get her to eat a little bit of yogurt and a half of a banana.

They sat and talked as they ate, discussing what other things Dave and Edward were going to need for the baby that couldn't wait for it to be shipped from St. Louis. After Dinner, Blaine and Burt left. Blaine picked up the kids, and hugged Burt and Carole before heading home.

Sunday, Carole came over to the house to watch the quads, while Blaine, Lizzie and Bee did some more shopping before heading back to Dave and Edward's house. Lizzie and Bee sat with Cara, watching a movie on the laptop and sharing a snack of diced melons and yogurt.

Blaine smiled when he saw Dave sitting at the kitchen table, feeding Tyler. "You look like a natural with him."

Dave shrugged. "I didn't get to experience this with Xander. He was already almost three when Keri tracked me down. Now I kind of feel cheated a little."

"Where's Edward?"

"He's on his way to the airport to pick up his mom and dad. They flew in to help out for a few days. Eddie's dad is going to help draw up the adoption papers while he's here. I don't remember if you knew or not, but Eddie's dad practices Family Law, and he's licensed here in Ohio, so he's going to make sure everything goes smoothly."

Throughout the day, Nick and Jeff, Santana and Brittany, Mercedes and George, Sam and Julia, Lauren and Charles, and most of their other friends stopped in to check on Dave and Edward and the kids. Edward's parents were overwhelmed by the outpouring of support for their son and his husband. Arlene Harris, Edward's mother, cried when Blaine hugged her.

"Don't worry, Mrs. Harris, we'll take good care of your son and this little family. It's kind of what we do here. Help each other and offer our support. Right now you just need to focus on the funeral and taking care of yourselves, and spending time with your grandkids. Because they are your grandkids, too, even if Kelly wasn't technically your daughter. She was in your hearts, I'm sure, even without a piece of paper making it official."

Arlene just nodded her head against his shoulder. "We should have adopted her. I guess I had just hoped Melissa, my sister, Kelly's mom, would eventually return and be a part of Kelly's life, but she never did. We had guardianship, but we never made it official, and now I'll regret that for the rest of my life."

Blaine sat her down at the table, and Dave set Tyler in her arms. "Edward and I are adopting Cara and Tyler as soon as we can. Kelly would have wanted that, I'm sure. And I'm sure she would want her children to call you grandma."

Arlene smiled down at the baby in her arms. She'd seen at the wedding the week before what a wonderful group of friends her son was marrying into, and it made her happy knowing Kelly's children would be raised surrounded by so much love.
