I Promise

"Why are you like this?" Harry said, when George burst unceremoniously into his bedroom and told him they were going out.

"Do you want to do something fun?" George asked, grinning as he flipped through Harry's wardrobe, pulling out jeans and a shirt and throwing them on Harry's bed.

"Our ideas of fun are very different," Harry pointed out, though he showed willing, pulling himself reluctantly from his bed, where he'd been reading. "What are we doing?"

"We're going to Parle," George replied. "And I am going to get you a boyfriend."

Harry groaned. "I said they were very different, didn't I? I don't want a boyfriend, George."

"Okay, but… you could do with a snog and a feel up, right? Maybe even a one night—"

"You know I'm not about that," Harry said, pulling his jeans on. "I'll come out with you, but I'm not pulling."

George wrinkled his nose. "We'll see."

The club was loud. It was busy. Harry… didn't hate it. The music was good, better than he'd been expecting. Usually when he was dragged out to a club, it was all banging music that made no sense and people throwing themselves around the dancefloor until there was sweat dripping from them.

This was… actual music. People were dancing properly.

They stayed by the bar for a little while, until they were a few drinks in and a little looser. Then George pulled Harry to the dancefloor, not quite to the center but certainly not on the edge.

Harry turned his back to George and pressed back on him, their hips moving together as they swayed.

George put his hands on Harry's hips, pulling him even closer, and it was both wonderful and torturous, because this was where Harry wanted to be, and this was the only time he ever got to be here.

Not that he'd ever tell George that.

He loved him to death, but they were friends, best friends, and roommates and Harry didn't want to ruin that.

Not even for the chance that they could be more.

Falling over each other, they finally made it back to their apartment. George fell onto the sofa, pulling Harry down with him so Harry was sprawled over his lap. When Harry tried to shift to the side, George held him in place.

"I failed."

Harry frowned. "Failed what?"

"You didn't even make out with anyone!"

"I told you I didn't want to," Harry pointed out.

"But… I'll make it up to you," George said, leaning over awkwardly to kiss Harry. Pulling back, he said, "I'll make out with you until you find a boyfriend."

Harry pushed him back gently. "George…"

"I'll be good to you, Harry," George said softly.

"I don't want a drunken mistake to ruin us," Harry pointed out, tone just as soft. "I don't want to lose you."

"You never will," George vowed. "I just want you to be happy. That's why I'm always trying to hook you up with someone. Kissing and cuddling makes you happy."

"Only if the person matters."

"Do I matter?"

Harry stared at him for a long moment. "More than anyone."

"Then let me make you happy. I promise you, Harry, I'll still be here tomorrow and the next day and the next day. It's not a mistake."

Harry swallowed hard and then nodded, letting George pull him close once more.

Against George's lips, he whispered, "Don't let me regret this, George."

"I won't. I promise."
