Word Count: 519

Believe In Fairytales

He'd never believed the fairytale stories his mother told him. Sure they were nice to listen to and imagine, but the idea of love at first sight, even for an eleven year old, was quite far-fetched.

Except, then James met her.

Her eyes were the greenest he'd ever seen, her head red like the flames of a fire. She was beautiful, and James was instantly smitten.

She'd be his wife, he knew that the moment he met her.

Despite the fact that she didn't actually appear to like him at all, he knew that she'd be his.

It was meant to be.

Just like in the fairytales.

It wasn't until he was seventeen that James realised that he had to mature if he was ever going to get the woman he loved.

Lily, while thankfully no longer friends with the rat, Snivellus, still looked at him with distrust more often than not, and given it was their last year at Hogwarts, James knew he was running out of time.

As the Head Boy though, he was given the opportunity to show Lily that he could be mature, that he'd grown up and he was someone that she should want to know.

And it worked.

Finally.

James cleared his throat. There was a lump lodged there that had been there since he'd first set eyes on Lily walking down the aisle towards him on her father's arm, a vision in white.

"Lily," he began, his vows coming easily to him with the amount he'd practiced them in the mirror. "Before I met you, I thought my mum was making her fairytales up when she told me about love at first sight. I didn't think it could be real. And then I met you, and even at eleven, I knew that you'd be the woman I married because I loved you from the moment I set my eyes on you.

"I promise to strive to be worthy of you everyday, and I promise to always love you, to always protect you, and to remain devoted to you until the day I die; and beyond that if at all possible.

"I promise to never go to bed angry, to apologise when I make you mad—which if we're honest, if going to be quite often—and to be forgiving when you make me mad.

"I promise to be there for you during the lows, and to celebrate the highs, and more than anything else, I promise that I'll love you more with every day we spend together."

They danced together, their friends and family watching on, and James couldn't wipe the smile off his face.

He'd always known Lily would be his wife, but knowing it was actually true now, that it was his reality, was still unbelievable.

"Did you mean it, James?" she asked, looking up at him with a beautiful smile brightening her face. "Did you love me even on that very first day?"

James leant down to lay a soft kiss on her lips. "Every word I said was true. You made me believe in the fairytales, Lils."
