Possessive Idiot

"I think I'm gonna go before you say something you regret," Harry said softly, when Severus paused in his rant. He smiled sadly. "We can talk tomorrow."

"If you walk out on me, don't come back," Severus snapped, turning his head away.

Harry sighed, rubbing a hand over his face. "I'm not willing to argue with you about this, Severus, but you seem intent on a fight. I think it's best if we just leave it for the night."

"Leave, if you're so inclined," Severus said, waving to the door. He never looked back at Harry for a second.

"I'll see you soon."

Harry slipped out of the house. He didn't understand why Severus seemed to intent on thinking that Harry was cheating on him whenever he was spotted even so much as talking to another person, but it was wearing on him.

Harry had never—would never—cheat on Severus. He loved him more than he'd ever loved another human, but it was tiring sometimes.

Loving Severus.

It could be exhausting.

He made it as far as the edge of the wards when he heard his name being called. He turned back to see Severus standing by the door, watching him, one arm outstretched towards him.

Harry paused.

"Come back inside," Severus asked, his voice travelling in the quiet of the night air.

"I don't think—"

"Harry, I'm sorry. I know I'm being an idiot," Severus interrupted. "Please, just… come back inside."

Harry hesitated and then nodded, walking back down towards the door. Severus reached for him as soon as he was close enough, pulling him into his arms.

"I'm sorry," he muttered into Harry's hair. "I know I'm a possessive asshole, and I'm sorry. I'll work on it."

Harry snorted against his jumper. When he pulled back he reached up to tuck Severus' hair behind his ear. "You just have to trust me when I say that I will never do that to you. I love you."

"I know. I do trust you, Harry, I swear I do. I just… I can imagine how much they all want you and I lose my head a little."

Harry smiled slightly. "I know. You're an idiot, but hey, you're my idiot, right?"

Severus snorted. "Brat. Come inside, I'll make some hot chocolate. It's cold."

Harry let himself be led back into the house. They'd have to talk some more, he knew, because he couldn't keep going the way they were, but he thought they'd be able to fix it.

After all, Severus was what Harry wanted. He just had to show the man that.
