58th Entry: Medli's Music
After the sun went down completely, Zelda decided to make camp in an opening between the rock and the cliff it was next to. Midna had decided to come out of Wolf Link's shadow by this point, but stayed far from the fire Zelda made. Zelda then gave the Master Sword to Wolf Link, who was able to pull it out of its scabbard with his teeth. For a moment, the sword's blade shined brightly along with the Triforce mark on Link's right paw. But it didn't change Wolf Link's form, much to Zelda's disappointment.
"The power of the blade isn't enough to repel the Shadow Crystal's effect on Link," Zelda determined. "Perhaps we need to go to Korok Forest and put the Master Sword back in its resting place."
"Why do you think that?" Midna asked.
"That place is considered to be very sacred and powerful," Zelda explained. "So I figure the combination of the blade and the stone it came from might have the strength to return Link back to his normal human form."
"You might be onto something," replied Midna. "I recall from my history lessons that the Hero found the Master Sword in a temple of sorts, and its natural energy turned him from a wolf into a human before he pulled the Master Sword out of the stone it was lodged in."
Zelda nodded in agreement, recalling this same information from the Hyrule Historia. She then lay down to sleep, while Wolf Link sat down beside her.
"Don't you worry," Zelda muttered as she scratched behind Wolf Link's ears. "I'll get you back to normal in no time."
###
Night had fallen by the time Revali returned to Rito Village, which was a series of wooden houses clustered around narrow cliffs with the bird-shaped Divine Beast Vah Medoh perched on the tallest and narrowest cliff at the center of the village. He had spent most of the day flying around Hyrule in an attempt to find the Yiga Clan's hideout, but found no traces of it from the air much to his irritation. The only things of interest that he noticed was a new structure in the Gerudo Desert, a visible shockwave that almost knocked him out of the skies, and the sky going from blue to orange with black squares floating about. Revali thought the Rito Chieftain might know something about these things, yet to Revali's surprise there was no one in the village except for floating blue flames.
"What are these?" Revali moved his right wing through one of the flames, which remained in place. "They're transparent, yet remarkably cold…. Chief Kaneli!"
Revali went to Kaneli's house and there was nothing inside except one blue flame that floated.
"This isn't funny, Chief," Revali said, looking around the house more carefully. "Where are you, or the rest of the villagers for that matter?"
Unable to find anything, Revali took out his Sheikah Slate and noticed the screen was black. He tried to activate it several times, but nothing happened.
"Useless Hylian junk!" Revali snapped, throwing the Sheikah Slate against a wall in Kaneli's house. "I knew there would come a day when Sheikah technology would fail us. Guess today's the day."
Then Revali picked up the Sheikah Slate, and was relieved that nothing looked damaged. Suddenly, he heard harp music from outside the window of Kaneli's home. Flying out the window, he followed the music up to Vah Medoh where the sound appeared to be coming from the Guidance Stone terminal. But when he got there, the harp music stopped.
"Odd," Revali remarked. "But I suppose I could try charging my Sheikah Slate here."
After placing his Sheikah Slate on the Guidance Stone, though, the world became negative and something flew from the top of his head landing in front of him. It was a small Rito girl with a beak for a nose, long brown hair, and wearing a blue dress while carrying a wooden harp.
"I must be tired from all that flying I did," Revali said, rubbing his eyes. "That's the only explanation I can think of for why my vision is all weird, and why there's a little Rito chick standing in front of me."
The Rito girl looked slightly offended. "I'm no chick! I am Medli, the Sage of Earth!"
"Sure you are," Revali responded, not believing Medli's words. "Didn't you exist during the Time of the Wind Waker?"
"Yes," Medli nodded. "I helped the Hero of Winds unlock the Master Sword in his quest to stop Ganondorf from taking the Triforce."
Revali was still not convinced. "How do I know you're the real Medli and not some crazy chick pretending to be her?"
Medli glared up at Revali, but then her eyes brightened. "The Triforce isn't mentioned in the Hyrule Historia, right? So how would I know what that is?"
"You could have found out from one of the scholars, like Sahasrahla."
"True, but I found out from Lana."
This caught Revali's attention. "Only the Province Leaders, the Champions, and Zelda know about Lana. At least, the Lana who has been involved in recent events and not the one mentioned in the Hyrule Historia — but they could be the same thing."
"Look, I don't have time to argue about who I am with you," Medli insisted. "The land of Hyrule has been covered by Twilight, and we have to wake one of the Light Spirits that's in Vah Medoh to free the Hebra Province from the Twilight."
"Okay, now I know you're crazy. Where's the proof you have that Hyrule has been taken over by the Twilight Realm?"
"The strange sky, for starters, and all the Ritos in this village except for you have been turned into Spirits."
Revali thought back to the blue flames he saw earlier. "Why am I immune, then?"
"Because I'm possessing your body right now."
"Wait, what?" Revali looked at his wings and back at Medli. "How? When did it happen?"
"It happened because of Lana, who did it to counteract her evil self Cia," Medli explained. "Cia's the one who helped the Yiga Clan kidnap the children, and reconstruct the Mirror of Twilight in the Gerudo Desert."
"And I assume Lana told you all this stuff?"
"Yes."
Looking around, Revali noticed several glowing bugs flying around. Annoyed by their presence, he flapped his wings and used Revali's Gale to blow them away. One bug hit his wing directly, and turned into a ball made of light which drifted down to a translucent grapevine that was now attached to his pants.
"What was that?" Revali wondered.
"A Tear of Light," said Medli. "If you collect all of them and place them on the main terminal, it'll awaken the Light Spirit in Vah Medoh."
"Will you go away when that happens?"
"Sadly, yes," Medli said in a sarcastic tone.
Revali looked around again, seeing the bugs he had blown away were flying back to their original places inside Vah Medoh. Sighing, he said, "All right, let's get this over with."
To be continued…
