ChapterFive
Klaus had a busy day ahead of him, he had two prisoners and his brother was breathing down his neck about keeping the girl locked up. He had no choice though, she clearly was up to something, and it clearly had something to do with him. Besides, Elijah wasn't something he needed to worry about, the threat of a dagger would keep him in line well enough. He finished giving his men orders and sent Elijah after Rebekah to tell her about his new-found information about the hunter. Then he set off up the stairs to the locked room, opening the door, to find the girl sitting on the floor next to the bed, staring out the now open window.
"Well, I'm guessing that means you have figured out that you have no hope of escape."
"the Window and door are locked from the outside, the barrier is spelled so that even if I could unlock the door I still couldn't leave." Hope replied, trying her best not to look at her father.
"Yes, it is a beautiful spell, makes it so much simpler to keep powerful witches like you in their place. Now, speaking of, who are you?"
"I already told you, I am Hope Smith."
"Lie number one, let's try another question, why are you here?"
"Just visiting."
"Lie number two. Try again. Why are you here?" Klaus asked, lowering his voice and letting his anger show.
"Just visiting." Hope said, placing extra emphasis on her words.
"If you won't talk, I'll find a way to make you. Oh, don't worry dear, I'm sure it won't hurt… Too badly anyway." Klaus said before leaving the room. He had no intention of torturing her like he was going to do that that hunter, but she didn't have to know that.
"Did she tell you anything?" Elijah's voice interrupted Klaus' thought process.
"Not a thing. I'm going to call in a witch, get her to cast a spell that will make her talk. For now, though, I need you to handle this whole hunter situation, I really don't need anything else on my plate."
"Not a problem, I've already got men keeping an eye on everything. I'll handle it and keep you updated." Elijah said before passing by his brother to continue his way down the hall.
Elijah continued down the hall to his room before pulling out his phone he quickly dialed his brother's number.
"Hello?"
"Kol, where are you?"
"Elijah, how good to hear from you. I am still on my mission for Klaus, babysitting little Gilbert."
"I think you need to make your way back to Mystic Falls, and send me a contact for a witch that isn't under the control of our brother."
"Why on earth would you think I would have one of those, I am completely loyal…"
"Kol, I know that you would never not have a plan to stop Klaus from killing you. I am not calling on behalf of him." Elijah explained.
"And why are you calling, then?"
"Klaus has taken a girl captive, she is doing something suspicious, but we can't figure out why. He has taken to trying to get her to talk without it. There is something going on that needs to be figured out sooner than that, though. I need help, though, and I want to know before he does."
"I'll send it over, why do you want me to come back?"
"If I am right about why she seems off, we are going to need the whole family, seeing as you are a part of that family, you are one of those people."
"Very well, I'll head back this way tonight, after I finish this last meet up with little Gilbert." Kol replied before hanging up the phone. Elijah placed his phone back in his pocket before continuing his walk down the hall to the room with the girl. He glanced around him, making sure his brother had gone back downstairs before opening the door and stepping inside. The girl sat next to her bed in the single chair that sat in the room, the window was blown open, and the breeze blew in.
"You must be Hope." Elijah spoke as he stepped a little closer to the center of the room.
"I am." Hope replied, she almost admitted that she knew who he was before she caught herself. In this world she had never met him, and therefore Hope should not know his name.
"Is there a reason you are following my brother, and seemingly the new women in town as well, Hayley, isn't it?"
"I've heard that there is a women named Hayley in town, yes."
"You've heard?" Elijah offered, he knew that he could catch her off guard eventually.
"Yes, the rumor weed of Mystic Falls is a loud one."
"Well, of course, except in the important matters as to which it covers it up nicely."
"So I have heard."
"Yes, well the supernatural is something that even the most nosy villages cover up nicely. I think it has something to do with fear." Elijah moved to the dresser on the other side of the room, picking up a pen from the top of it. He had paused in speaking waiting for a response, but she stayed silent, so he continued on.
"When one is afraid, they tend to not speak of it. The fear of power is one that can keep even the bravest silent. Yet, I have found that the feeling of fearing the loss of those you love can be a greater reason. Yes, the threat of supernatural life almost never stays focused on a single person. Have you experienced such fear?"
"Well…" Hope paused, she had to be cautious, she knew her uncle would be quick to figure out everything that was going on. So, she decided to ignore his question, "Are you supposed to be the good cop to Klaus' bad cop or something?"
"I understand your thought process, but I assure you my brother does not even know that I am here currently." Elijah said with a small smile.
"He doesn't know that you are in his house?"
"Oh, he very well knows that I am in his house, he does not, though, know that I am talking to you."
"Oh."
"Yes, I find that if I take the time to try and get the information, it keeps him away from his torture kit."
"Do you tend to get the information that you want?"
"Always."
"Always?" Hope asked, she had never heard of her uncle's interrogation skills, she was hoping that she wasn't about to find out just how he got it.
"Yes, I find that when a person will not talk, there is very little that can change that. My brother is willing to go to whatever lengths to get the information, I on the other hand find it hard to be patient enough to wait on the will of a person to break."
"So, what do you do?"
"I find someone that can pull the information out. I find that magic is a quicker answer. And one that even the strongest will, can not overcome." As Elijah finished speaking he turned to the girl to see her reaction, she seemed to gain a slight fear in her eye, which assured Elijah that she, while being a witch, could not prevent the searching of a mind.
"I… I am sure that is very effective." Hope replied, trying to hide the realization that she gained by listening to her uncle.
"Yes, it is always effective. I have found that it does the job better than even the harshest approaches of my dear brother."
"And, the harshness of your brother, is it what I have heard?"
"That would depend on what you have heard. He fluctuates depending on the person he is working with. The fact that he has only spoken to you bodes well for you. Yet, I am sure his patience will run out eventually. Yet, I plan to know exactly why you are here far before that happens." Elijah replied, he walked towards the door before turning around, "For your sake, I hope I succeed. I would hate to see a girl so young as yourself suffer such a fate." With that, Elijah left the room. Klaus was standing in the hall,
"You just had to try your way."
"Yes, and I think I just might have made more headway than you did with your line of questioning."
"You know why she is here."
"Not yet, but I will very soon if you keep playing the part."
"Play the part?"
"Yes, keep interrogating her, but don't use force, just get closer and closer to losing your temper. Make it seem like you are about to snap, like you are going to start to torture her. Then let me go in, give her the other option, I will get the information, I promise you." Elijah replied. He really didn't want his brother to harm this girl, not one so young.
"Very well brother. You have one week, after that I will do whatever it takes to find out why she is following me. And I promise you, brother, that you will not like my version."
"I never have." With that Elijah walked off to call his sister, whatever was going on here it was more than any of them knew and for some reason Elijah felt like the entire family would be needed very soon.
