Chapter 31
Darkness had fallen and Kate and Kara slipped the boat out of the private dock. Kara marveled at everything that the average person could not see from the outside of the property. Bruce Wayne had outfitted the boat house almost like a smaller version of the Bat Cave and the blonde wondered if Brainy would be jealous.
The two didn't talk much as Kate used the sonar and radar to guide the boat around in the ocean. It wasn't going to be a long trip, but they needed to be as stealthy as possible. Normal boats were inherently not stealthy but when the craft had Bat Tech, well that was a different matter. The engines still seemed loud to Kara, but Kate could barely hear them. The sonar and radar were enhanced so that night boating could be achieved more easily. Normally, once dark, pleasure craft were often found in their slips. Those that were still in the water needed to be careful to stay out of the shipping lanes as large cargo ships could run over a small boat and not even notice. Of course, too close to the shore and one might find oneself run aground.
It was when the engines shut off that Kara realized they were near an isolated dock. She helped Kate reach the first tie down and the brunette quickly secured the boat. She put on a pair of glasses, which acted like the filters in the bat cowl. Now that they both could see in the dark, they got out and walked down the seemingly deserted mooring.
"You think they know we're here?" Kara whispered. It was code for her to use her x-ray vision.
"I'd be very surprised if they didn't," Kate kept her tone down low as well. Kara scanned the area, not seeing anyone right away. They reached the end of the dock and followed the dirt path that was at the end of it for a little while. The path had a hill on one side and the ocean on the other. It was just wide enough for a four-wheeler. Suddenly, Kara threw her arm out in front of Kate and the brunette stopped.
"Unfriendlies around the bend," she whispered. Kate just nodded and Kara scooped her friend up and flew them to the top of the hill so they could hide. Kate figured it was an island patrol but there were two sides to that. They wanted to be brought to Safiyah, but they didn't want to be brought to Tatiana if she'd beaten them back to Coryana. Kate didn't want to seem brash in front of Safiyah, she would rather let the two ladies duke it out away from Gotham. While the relationship she had with the leader of the Many Arms of Death had not ended well, coming back to Coryana, allowing themselves to be captured, would appear to Safiyah as an act of non-aggression. That the fight was not with Kate and Gotham but with Tatiana.
Two heavily armed men rounded the corner and they watched them head for the dock. They would be swinging back around once they realized someone was on the island that hadn't been before. This was probably the only way to find out who they were loyal to. Kara's excellent hearing would tell them what the two men were discussing.
The fact of the matter was, should they need it, Alfred was on standby back at the house to recall the boat by taking control of it remotely. A little safety feature that Bruce had decided was a good idea. Much like the Batmobile and Bat Plane back in Gotham, this Bat Boat was definitely more than it appeared.
"They found the boat… they aren't calling for back up… why wouldn't they do that?" Kara asked.
"Because they either don't want someone to know that they messed up or they're checking the boat out first," Kate frowned. This wasn't going the way they wanted.
"They're radioing someone. It's Safiyah," Kara said. Kate nodded and the two scrambled back over the top of the hill and the two men saw the movement. They shouted at them and the two just stuck their hands up in the air.
"Who are you? What are you doing here?" The larger of the two asked.
"We need to see Safiyah. Tell her it's Kate Kane," the brunette said. The two men looked at each other but the smaller one quickly radioed back to the main base. There was silence for a few moments before the person on the other end told him to hand over the radio to Kate.
"Is it really you?" It was Safiyah.
"Yes, and I have brought a friend. Kara Danvers of CatCo. Media. We need to talk about what has been going on in Gotham," Kate told her.
"All business, I see," she said.
"It needs to be. You have a traitor in your midst and they have been making trouble," Kate didn't bother to beat around the bush.
"Come to the base. Let my men escort you," with that the radio call ended and the walk to the base began.
