Ch.12: Learning to Fly
Ah, August 28th. On that day in 1996, I was born. But that year, 2021, was a bit different obviously. Being in a land full of ponies and dragons and a lot.
I awoke with a start, rubbing my eyes as I got ready to shower. The strange thing was- I didn't even know what I was going to do. Twilight had said she had a surprise for me, but that night.
As I showered, I thought over my options. I could just have a lazy day and relax. I could get lost in a delightful book.
Ultimately, I did not get to decide, as when I stepped out of my bathroom, wearing a shirt that said, "Keep Calm and Flutter On," and a simple pair of gray sweatpants, Rainbow Dash stood there, her hooves crossed.
"Good" she smirked. "Cool and casual. That's the way I need ya today."
I tilted my head. "What do you mean?"
Rainbow flew over closer. "Twilight asked me to get ya outta the castle today. So, we are going flying."
"Rainbow" I said. "I get that. But I'm afraid of heights. So, unless you are gonna keep me in your belly, like I am sure other humans would want, I'm not getting on your back."
Rainbow looked disgusted. "Some humans think that way?"
I nodded solemnly. Rainbow stared for a moment, before busting out laughing.
"Oh my! Spitfire will love that one," she said, falling to the floor.
"But really" she said getting up. "My Mom and Dad wanna meet ya. And they live in Cloudsdale. So" she said narrowing her eyes. "You got an hour to be outside. And don't eat. Dads got something planned."
With that, I was alone, preparing for this flight.
About 15 minutes later, and wearing a bicycle helmet, I was outside. Rainbow raised an eyebrow at the headgear.
"Man, do you think I'm gonna crash?"
I shook my head no. "Nah. Sunset insisted I wear it."
Rainbow smirked. "When the heck are you gonna tell her?"
"I will when I'm ready" I responded.
"But you have known her for about 2 months! That's enough time!"
"How long did you know Applejack before you told her?" I responded.
Rainbow grumbled. "Ok, you have me there" she said. I walked over to her, looking at her. "How are we going to do this? Just sit on your back?"
She nodded and I sat. I was afraid that she would fall from my overweight frame. But she was perfectly fine.
Rainbow grinned. "Let me know when to kick off. Just don't look down."
After a few minutes, we were off.
During the first few minutes, I was silent. I closed my eyes, feeling I could get through the trip that way.
However, I took a chance and opened my right eye. My eyes widened. I wasn't even shaking!
"Whoa" I said. "This is actually pretty fun!"
Rainbow grinned. "At least its not Twilight. You'd probably hear a whole buncha science nerd stuff."
"So, Rainbow, how are you and Applejack doing? Do you live together?"
Rainbow smiled, licking her lips. "We do. We actually live by Fluttershy's house."
I put my hand to my chin in thought. I had seen a house on my walk to Fluttershy's cottage a few weeks prior that I thought had Applejack's wagon outside.
"And AJ's brother Big Mac and Apple Bloom live at Sweet Apple Acres. You see it yet?"
"Nope" I said as we landed upon a cloud. In front of me was a simple yet nice looking house.
"Aw man. Ya gotta see it. Nice scenery. Anyway, I gotta keep ya on my back till we get in. Twilight said ya would fall off the cloud."
I nodded. The front door of the house opened after a moment as Rainbow's parents appeared.
Family. The greatest thing anyone can ever have.
Rainbow's Mom, Wendy Whistles, smiled widely as Rainbow (And me of course) went up to the door. "Hi sweetie! How was the trip?"
Rainbow shrugged. "It was fine. Had this egghead here to keep me company"
I rolled my eyes as Wendy smiled, pulling me into a hug. "Well, it's nice to meet you, David. Twilight Velvet couldn't stop bragging about you when we went dress shopping last week."
I chuckled. "Well, I did get 400 points across 3 games in bowling a few months ago."'
Rainbow's eyes twitched.
Rainbow's Dad, Bow Hoothoof, smiled as Rainbow set me down. "Sorry about that. We've heard a lot about you son."
"Good things I hope," I chuckled as I followed him into the kitchen. It was a chef's dream. An expansive island, an impressive knife set, and a stainless- steel table.
Bow laughed. "Mhmm. Anyone that can keep up with Pinkie Pie has my respect. Oh! And Happy Birthday."
Rainbow turned to me, deeply embarrassed. "Yeah...sorry. I was so hyped for ya to meet my parents that I forgot to tell you."
I grinned, pulling Rainbow into a hug. "No trouble. Next time, I shave your mane while you sleep."
Rainbow glared at me. "You Wouldn't"
"Oh, I would" I challenged.
"And I would dare make pork chops for brunch" Bow smirked.
Rainbow turned to her dad, as if the world had become an LSD trip. "Y-you...you are awesome!" she smiled.
It was about Four that afternoon that me and Rainbow departed. A day that had tasty food, watching a Hoofball game on the T.V., and learning a lot about the Wonderbolts.
But the day was about to get better.
As me and Rainbow entered the Castle, Pinkie bounced towards us with a wide smile. "You are just in time!" she grinned, gesturing us into the kitchen. I was quite confused, but my eyes widened as we got there. I was shocked!
The Mane 6, Cadence and Shining Armor, The Cutie Mark Crusaders, and Starlight, Spike, and Sunset all stood there. A dirt cake stood on the counter, balloons floating in the ceiling. The group stood together, holding a heart that said:
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DAVID!"
I blinked. I was not able to speak. After a second, I turned, crying, and walked off.
Applejack frowned and followed me to the library, having a feeling why I was sad.
I was not the only one that missed their parents.
A/N: Fair warning. The next two chapters will be quite the emotional ride. Bring your tissues.
Until then, I will see you next time.
