Ch.14: A Pinkie's Pain
As the calendar stepped into October, certain parts of Ponyville found itself busy. One of which was Surgarcube Corners. Nightmare Night was coming up, and ponies wanted their treats.
After a particular busy Friday, October 15th, Pinkie looked at me. Her usually, well, Pinkie eyes looked tired, as if she had just done Hell Week in the US Marines. She still cracked a smile, however.
"Say David, wanna stick around for a while? Have an apple fritter on me?"
I took a moment to think. I had a game of Cards Against Equinity planned that night with Sunset and Twilight, but it wasn't for a few hours. Pinkie beamed as I gave her a firm nod.
If only I knew. Sometimes, even the happiest rainbow must cry.
Pinkie and I sat across from each other in a table by the window. She held a chocolate éclair in her hooves. She had a focused expression, before taking a deep breath.
"David, how well do you get along with your brothers and sister?"
I smiled, taking a bite of my apple fritter. "Pretty well. My sister could get on my nerves, but other than that, everything was good. Why do you ask?"
Pinkie frowned slightly. "You know about my parents, right?"
I nodded. "Igneous Rock and Cloudy Quartz, right?"
She sighed. "Mhmm. I guess I call them Mom and Dad, but they are not my real parents. I was adopted."
I took a moment to process this. Looking at Igneous and Cloudy, it made sense. Pinkie looked nothing like them. "I kinda thought you turned Pink when you got your Element" I admitted.
Pinkie gave a small giggle. "Nah., I know fanfic writers have theorized on that. Just like thinking Princess Celestia has a crush on cake." Me and her turned to the window looking outside, before laughing.
"But" Pinkie said after catching her breath, "It's not true. As far as I know, I was adopted when I was a few months old."
She took a deep breath, her eyes glancing everywhere, before continuing.
"Have you ever felt like your parents were a façade? Like they didn't love you?"
I looked down. "I thought that way about my dad for years."
Pinkie frowned deeply. "I feel that way about Mom and Dad. My sisters, even Limestone sometimes, are great. But Mom and Dad hate my wacky humor, my parties...
Sometimes I wonder if they hate me"
Pinkie then did something I don't see her do. She cried. Ugly cried. Burst out into a river, and laid her head on the table, sobbing.
I did not say a word. I felt bad for her. Being adopted into a rock farm family when you are the Party Princess? Yikes.
I rose from my seat, not caring that the legs scraped the wooden floor below. I quickly walked over to Pinkie, tucking her chin up.
Pinkie looked at me with a sad expression. "It's e-even worse than that, David" she sobbed. "I've accepted that they don't like me."
I frowned hard. I then pulled Pinkie from her chair, hugging her tightly.
"I won't confess to knowing them" I said. "But I don't think they hate you Pinkie. If they do though, they don't know what they are missing. And the amazing friend you are, Pinkiemena Diane Pie."
Pinkie smiled, wiping her tears. "Do..do you have time for another doughnut?"
I quickly nodded. Sunset would be mad at the doughnuts, but sometimes, friends need comfort.
For Pinkie, that was doughnuts on a partly cloudy afternoon at five thirty.
We resumed our places at the table, each having another doughnut of our choice.
"So," I asked. "How did you get off the rock farm anyways?"
Pinkie smiled widely. "Applejack. When I was eleven, she and Big Mac came to sell us Zap Apple Jam. And I asked her if anyone needed a party pony in Ponyville. Mom and Dad were upset, but they wished me well."
"The Cakes... they were super doper helpful and took me in Soooooo quickly. That was 11 years ago. Crazy how fast time flies huh?"
I did the math. "So, 22 huh?"
Pinkie nodded fast. "Mhmm! Rarity's the oldest of us. She is 27. Applejack is twenty-five. Twilight is twenty-four, and Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy are twenty-three."
I smirked, putting my fritter down and rubbing my hands together. "Another thing to tease Rainbow about. I'm 25" I laughed.
After a moment, another question popped up.
"Say Pinkie, do you ever think about your real parents? Like who they are?"
Pinkie put a hoof to her chin. Of course, the éclair was already gone.
"You know" she said scratching her chin. "I do think about it sometimes. Like are they nice? Do they like my craziness?"
I went to respond, only for the front door to open. Pinkie turned, only to gasp in shock.
Standing there, was Igneous Rock and Cloudy Quartz.
They did not speak. Igneous gave me a small nod, with a hint of a smile, as they advanced to Pinkie.
They wrapped Pinkie in a hug. And that was the river. Pinkie bawled her eyes out, but it was not of sadness.
Even if Igneous and Cloudy did not understand her, they loved her.
As I write this, I feel as if there's an important detail to mention. One I would not know about for over a month. At a nearby tree, a figure stood. He smiled softly as he listened into me and Pinkie's conversation. He smiled.
"A mystery, yes Pinkie. But you'll know soon who your Mom and Dad are...
Pinkiemena…"
A/N: That was certainly a feels chapter. The next four chapters will be a change of pace. Oh yes, it is Gala time, and I have a lot planned. I hope you enjoy the ride. Until next time, everyone!
