Ch.4: A Pony walks into a Bar

It had been so long since I stepped into that Tavern. It was just as I had remembered it. Friends playing a game of pool as they jested with each other. A young barkeep doing a bit of everything. An older server serving customers. Even the green carpet floor below our feet.

"Where should we sit?" I asked Sunset. Sunset thought for a moment, then pointed to a table in the middle of the room. We walked towards it, sitting down. Me on the left end, Sunset on the right, and Cozy between us on my left. Even though Glennie gets busy during the summer, as it is a bit of a tourist town down due to the park, the Tavern was sparse on this night.

As the server came over to us, an older man with a beer gut rudely pushed her aside and walked briskly to our table, staring us down.

"Is there something you need, sir?" I asked. He sneered.

"We don't like your kind in this bar" he growled. "Especially that little bitch" he said, pointing to Cozy. Without a second word, me and Sunset stood up, me flapping my wings warningly.

"I would leave sir. Now" I said, staring him down. Cozy frowned, looking at the man. The man walked closer.

"I'll throw you guys out myself" he said, going to grab Sunset, before he gasped as she grabbed his arm, squeezing. "I would advise you to get out of here before you face is implanted in the wall."

The man cracked his neck bones, looking to throw down, before an intercepting hand grabbed him. He turned slightly, going to punch, only to stop as he realized who it was. A police officer.

The officer, who looked like he bench pressed people of the man's size for fun, gave the man a glare. "Attempted assault on a police officer. Plus, a hate crime" he said, dragging the man out the door. The bar's patrons looked at us. One of the men playing pool walked over, shaking his head.

"Are you alright, young lady?" he asked Cozy. Cozy nodded. "He scared me though."

Sunset and I hugged her. "I can't believe you were going to beat him up" she giggled.

"We would do that to anyone who would hurt our Starfire" Sunset declared, giving the guy who had come over a thumbs up.

A few tables over, a veteran watched. He would come talk to us after a while.

It was about 10 minutes later. We were munching down on celery and chicken wings as our food cooked. I had ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger and Fries. Cozy had too. Sunset had opted for a Grilled Ham and Cheese and Onion Rings.

"Excuse me" I heard behind me. I turned to see an older man in his fifties smiling at us. He had patches of white hair on his head and wore glasses. He was Native American too.

"Would you three mind if I sat down for a moment?"

Me and Sunset looked at each other and nodded at the guy. He sat down in the vacant chair, sticking his hand out. "Names Michael Waters" he smiled. I shook his hand. "David Root. And this is my fiancé Sunset Shimmer and our daughter Cozy Glow."

"Oh, I know who you are" he smiled. "The whole town has been talking about your return. How long are you back for?"

"Just for today" I admitted. "I'm showing them Saginaw tomorrow, then we're heading for New York. Pretty nervous really. I'm giving a speech in front of the UN on Saturday."

Michael then turned to Cozy. "Don't let that man bother you, missy. He is just a jerk. Trust me, I get my fair share of insults."

"Why would you get insulted?" Cozy asked in confusion. Michael sighed.

"Long story short, my race is considered inferior by some people. I'll just put it that way."

Cozy nodded solemnly. Michael smiled. "You know, I've been thinking about all this a lot. I'm conservative in my beliefs, yeah. Those vaccine mandates last year" he said shaking his head. "But that's not the point." He said, turning to Sunset and Cozy. "Can we all trust your races?"

Sunset and Cozy nodded. Michael smiled widely. "I didn't just fight in the Marines for 16 years for my country. It was to defend the people in it. And that means everyone. Skin color, religion, sexual orientation... that does not matter to me. What matters is how someone acts."

He took Sunset's hand. "You have a good man. And you Cozy" he smiled. "You have a great set of parents." He said, noticing the server coming with our food. "Anyways, I should let you folks get to it."

He was then surprised as I shook my head. "My Father served. So have several other members of my family. Why don't I buy you a drink?"

The smile on his face indicated I had made his night.

After we had our delightful meals, we stepped outside. It was Sunset, and I took a deep breath. "So Cozy" I said with a grin. "Where we are heading to tonight is a place, I lived for 4 years."

"Saginaw"
