Chapter Four
For Jay, the trip into Med had been a blur. He sensed he was under the influence of drugs; it was a feeling he knew well and associated it only with being at Med. His body had wanted to sleep in the ambulance, he felt absolutely exhausted and his breathing was all he could focus on. Each breath more painful than the last. Occasionally, the ambulance would hit one of the many potholes on the streets of Chicago and the pain would intensify. A fire igniting in various parts of his body, spreading through his veins like lava. He tried to move to get away from the pain, but the drugs soon pulled him back under. He wasn't sure if he was screaming, or whether it was in his mind.
He sensed that Hailey was close by, he could smell her perfume. There had been hands working on him, causing more pain, but he could feel her gentle touch on his bare shoulder. He wanted to hold her, squeeze her tight and smell her hair. Hearing the tone of her voice back at the warehouse, he knew she was worried. He wanted to tell her he was ok, reassure her, but there wasn't enough air for words.
With the effects of the drugs increasing, Jay hadn't realised that they had arrived at Med, he didn't notice his brother stood waiting in shock, and desperate to get his hands on Jay. He didn't react to the commotion in the busy ER. He did however notice the transfer to the awaiting treatment bed in the trauma bay. The first thing that bought him back was the sensation of someone lifting his feet. His feet were sore and bruised from weeks of being beaten, dragged and sleeping on stone. One of Pete's other favourite activities when he wasn't trying to simulate drowning, had been to kick and whip the soles of his feet. He had announced with great delight that there had been electric cabling just lying around waiting to be used as a whip. Jay had been surprised at how sensitive the feet could be.
When his feet went up, the pain in his lower back roared into life. He wished he'd had the energy to stop whoever was doing it to him, but that was soon irrelevant as he felt his entire body slide to his right. This time the drugs on board numbed nothing. He roared out loud with the small amount of breath that he had in him. He was in agony and it wasn't stopping. His back had so many cuts from being dragged in the warehouse, he needed them to stop. His swollen hands flew up in the air and tried to grab at the person moving him, he wasn't aware he had an entire medical team around him. He forced his eyes open and it was the first time he truly realised where he was. His vision of the trauma room sent his mind into a panic, he didn't want to be there. So many people stood around watching him, gloves at the ready to touch and make things worse. He thought he heard Hailey's voice, trying to reassure him, but lying flat, he couldn't catch sight of her, only doctors and nurses. He couldn't even see Will, he decided to beg them to stop.
"Sto..." He tried to get out, but speaking left him gasping for air. His hand came up to his oxygen mask, in his confusion he felt it had to be making things worse, he needed to get it off. His eyes moved around quickly in desperation to find Hailey, but it was his brother that stepped into his view.
"Jay, take it easy, you gotta calm down. You're at Med and you're safe now." Will informed him, rubbing his hair. "And keep this on your face, you really need it." He said gently pulling Jay's hand away and re-positioning the mask.
Jay was unable to calm down, the pain roaring through his body. He couldn't breathe and knew he was losing consciousness. A wave of panic erupted at the thought that if he lost consciousness, there was a high chance he wouldn't wake up. His increased breathing was causing him to cough and splutter under the mask.
"Jay, seriously man- calm down." Will begged. "We can get you something else for the pain. Take deep breaths for me ok..."
Jay felt someone holding down his arm, he sensed more needles were coming and he tried to move away.
"Jay, they're gonna put another line in for you, ok? Keep still for us." Will moved his hands down to Jay's shoulders to try and calm him.
Will glanced up to see Marcel arriving but was quickly pulled back to his brother as he could hear more laboured breathing.
"Jay, slow your breathing, you gotta try, ok?" Will begged, he glanced up to see Ethan and Marcel talking, he heard the words 'airway tube' and at risk of being asked to leave, he felt he had to speak up.
"Woah, hang on. We're tubing him?" He said moving away from Jay. Will stared between both doctors.
"No Will. We are not doing anything; I am doing it." Marcel moved past Will and headed towards Jay.
"But it's best to keep him conscious." Will argued, giving a quick glance to Maggie to see if she was going to step in and ask him to leave. He knew Jay wouldn't want this. In his heart he knew it was in Jay's best interest, but his hospital phobic brother would never consent to this.
"Step back Will. Let me help him." Marcel ordered.
It was as if time then slowed down for Will. He looked over to his brother and felt heartbroken. For the first time he really took in the sight of his broken, damaged body. Various cuts, bruises and sores littered his skin. He had lost weight, and muscle mass. His bearded face did it's best to hide the hollowed cheeks underneath. He wound his fingers tightly into a fist and rubbed his mouth, trying to keep it together. He realised quickly that Jay was no longer being difficult, he was losing his battle with consciousness.
He looked across at Hailey stood clinging to the glass doors of the trauma room. She looked a complete mirror of him- exhausted, traumatised, and desperate for Jay to be ok. He bent down towards Jay's ear.
"Hold on Jay, just hold on ok. I love you." He whispered. He walked away from his brother towards the door.
The next ten minutes went by in a flash. Jay was sedated, intubated, and stabilised enough for transfer to CT. Hailey and Will could only watch as Jay was whisked away from Baghdad down the corridor. Both went to follow but were stopped by Maggie.
"Hey, come on you two. There's nothing you can do following him around the hospital. Let's get you sat down. Coffee?" She asked kindly.
They looked at each other and nodded in agreement. Jay was now unconscious and wouldn't realise they weren't with him. Maggie led them to a private waiting room and they both took a seat waiting for the outcome of the scan.
"I'll be right back with your drinks." Maggie said, leaving them to it.
"You didn't tell me you had a lead." Will started to Hailey, who was sat with her head in her hands, staring at the floor.
"No, we didn't. Voight was worried it was another dead end." Hailey responded, looking up. "We didn't know Will."
"Right. But I said to tell me Hailey. I could have come with you."
Hailey smiled kindly, "You were right where you needed to be Will."
Will shook his head in disagreement but didn't have the energy to argue. For weeks he had begged the team to keep him up to date with all leads and progress. He told Voight he wanted to be there when they found him, no matter what the outcome.
"I am sorry Will, but going over that isn't gonna help Jay is it?" She said, reaching out and rubbing his hand with hers. They sat in silence for a few moments.
"How on earth did you find him?" He asked.
Hailey shook her head in disbelief at that turn of events. "You wouldn't believe it. A call came in saying where he was."
Will looked directly at her, shocked at her answer. "What?"
"Yeah, exactly that. It's weird, I know. Someone called in and said where he was. Obviously left no details or anything."
"That doesn't sound right."
"Yeah, we'll follow it up. The main thing is, we have him back."
"Yeah, I guess so." Will said, rising to meet Maggie who now stood in the doorway with two coffees. "Thank you." He said, reaching for the drinks.
"No problem, I found this guy hanging around outside…" Maggie smiled, showing Voight into the room, a coffee already warming his hands. Voight took a seat next to Hailey.
"What's the update Will?" He asked gruffly, sipping at the foam in his cup.
"There's not much to say yet, he's in a bit of a mess. They've taken him to CT and we're waiting for news."
"Right." Voight answered. A silence fell upon them, all lost in their own thoughts, sipping at their drinks. Eventually Hailey spoke up.
"You think we found him in time Will?" She asked quietly, tears forming in her eyes again.
"Hey, come on." Will said standing up, he put his cup on the floor and walked over to her. He crouched down and placed his hands on her knees. "I really hope so Hailey. Because I'm not keen on the other answer." She nodded, pulling a tissue out of her pocket, and softly wiping at her nose and eyes.
The arrival of Ethan at the door had them all on their feet in seconds.
"What is it?" Will asked desperately.
"Wait Will…" He said, turning to Voight. "What happened to him in there? He's showing signs of water in his lungs."
"Water? Pulmonary oedema?" Will said shocked, something normally associated with heart failure.
Ethan looked irritated at Will interrupting, clearly time was of the essence. "Yeah. That's what it was presenting as, the tests have confirmed it. His heart's fine though Will." Ethan replied quickly, looking straight back to Voight.
"It looked to me like they had used water to hurt him, but I don't know. Only because I saw a hose pipe near him, but they could have just been hosing him down. I wouldn't put it past these guys to fall blown waterboard him though. There were car batteries, cabling… and a baseball bat." Voight answered, trying his best to help.
"Ok. Thanks." Ethan went to leave but turned back, "I'll come and update you soon, ok?" He said, turning away and disappearing down the corridor.
"Jesus Voight, are you saying they waterboarded him?" Will asked.
"I'm saying I don't know. But there's a possibility." He answered, sitting back down.
"Shit." Will said in response.
"If he was, what does this mean for Jay, Will?" Hailey asked desperately, trying to analyse in her head whether Jay had any chance of making it.
"Let's wait for the update to see what's happening. If he has been waterboarded, then the fact that he's still here is impressive."
The room fell silent once again. Hailey broke the silence with a yawn. Voight glanced at his watch; it was now gone midnight. He thought about Adam, Kim and Kevin still working the scene. Trawling for any scrap of evidence to find where this gang had gone. It had been like trying to catch water disappearing down a drain trying to find the gang. All the while they were at large, there was still a risk to Jay. Voight thought again about the decision he had made to put Jay undercover with this group. A thought he had turned over in his head so frequently in the last few weeks. What if he hadn't put him under? If only there had been someone else with him in the club that night? None of this would have happened. He shook his head to clear his thoughts and angrily stood up, blowing out a long breath of air, clearly agitated; he began pacing around the room.
Will and Hailey looked up at the movement but didn't say anything. Voight wasn't one to be questioned or asked about his emotional state.
Ethan surprised them all by sticking his head around the door again suddenly.
"Ok, take a seat. There's good news and there's bad news…" He began.
