Chapter 2: Jackson - The Patrol

Amelia and Ellie were riding through the Creek trails when they stopped by a lake briefly to let their horses drink from it, afterwards they continued walking as Amelia looked back at Ellie as she smiled and said, "Come on, we're not that far now from the first outpost we need to stop at." Ellie smiled back and replied,

"You said you've done this route before, who did you used to do this route with, Amy?"

Amelia looked back at Ellie as she said, "I've done this route with Jesse before, and I've also been through here with Dina before as well. Why? You jealous because I have been out here with your girlfriend?" Ellie scoffed,

"I'm not jealous! And...Dina isn't my girlfriend, we're just friends. Besides, I was just curious as to who you used to do this route with. That's all."

As both Amelia and Ellie continued trudging through the snow, they stopped by what looked to be an abandoned Supermarket and they could hear low groaning coming inside. Amelia looked back at Ellie as she said, "Sounds like infected inside, we should clear them out." Ellie nodded her head and looked back at Amelia and replied,

"Yeah, assuming we can find a way in first, Amy."

While they were looking for a way inside the Supermarket, Amelia tried to lift up one of the shutters but no matter how hard she pulled the shutters wouldn't budge, so Amelia let go of the shutters as she looked at Ellie and said, "Sorry, I thought that would work." Ellie smiled at Amelia and replied,

"Don't worry, we'll find another way inside. We just have to keep looking."

Then Amelia saw a truck parked by the Supermarket and looked at Ellie as she said, "We can crawl under this truck, might be something we can use to get in on the other side." Ellie nodded her head and replied,

"Alright, let's do it."

So both Amelia and Ellie began crawling underneath the large truck to see what was on the other side, but as Amelia came out from underneath the truck an infected jumped down onto large pile of snow next to her and grabbed Amelia and she tried hold the infected from biting her neck or any part of her skin that was exposed.

As Amelia was trying to keep the infected from biting and infecting her, Ellie crawled out next to Amelia and shot the infected a few times with her pistol as it dropped lifeless on top of Amelia and Amelia then pushed the corpse off of her as she tried to calm herself since she was breathing heavily.

Ellie noticed this and crouched down beside her and put her arm around her to try and comfort her as she said, "It's ok, it's dead. You're alright." Amelia slowly calmed her breathing and looked at Ellie and replied,

"R-right, I'm sorry. It's just…"

She trailed off and Ellie tried to push Amelia to finish her sentence as she said, "It's just...what?" Amelia shook her head and replied,

"It's nothing, let's just keep moving. We can get in through that hole in the roof."

After Ellie helped Amelia back to her feet, the pair climbed on top the truck and entered through the hole in the roof of the Supermarket and Ellie looked at Amelia as she said, "Are you sure you were ok back there Amy? You seemed to be a little spooked when that runner grabbed you." Amelia looked back at Ellie and replied,

"I'm...fine Ellie. Seriously, I'm fine. Let's just clear out these infected."

As they continued moving through the building, they could still the groans coming from below them and Amelia looked at Ellie as she said, "Sounds like they are below us. Let's try and look for a way down." Ellie looked back at Amelia and replied,

"Yeah." Before she then added, "You know...I was only asking because I care about you, right Amy?"

Amelia looked back at Ellie and nodded her head as she said, "Of course, we're meant to look out for each other and have each others backs. That's what friends do." Ellie smiled at Amelia slightly and replied,

"Cool, let's see if we can find a way down."

While they were searching, Amelia found a door and looked through the window before she looked back at Ellie as she said, "Hey Ellie, I found something. But I can see spores, we should put our masks on." Ellie came over to Amelia and smiled and replied while putting her mask on,

"Good job Amy, let's go."

But as both Ellie and Amelia were making their way through the room, the floor crumbled and collapsed beneath them sending both girls crashing to the ground below hard. Amelia then slowly pushed herself back to her feet and checked her mask to make sure it hadn't broken, before she realized Ellie was trapped under some rubble so she tried to lift the rubble to free her.

But Amelia could hear some clickers coming towards them forcing her to release the piece of rubble she was lifting as she grabbed her pistol and began firing at the clickers killing them as they dropped to the ground lifeless, meanwhile Ellie managed to free herself from underneath the rubble as she pulled herself back to feet and dusted herself off, Amelia looked at Ellie as she said, "You good?" Ellie looked back at Amelia and nodded her head and replied,

"Yeah, I'm good. Those blind mother fuckers make my skin crawl."

The pair then slowly continued through the Supermarket until they eventually came into another large room filled with a few infected and both Ellie and Amelia took cover behind one of the shelves as Amelia quietly said, "There's a lot of them. Think we could take them out?" Ellie looked back at Amelia and nodded her head and quietly replied,

"Of course, we can do it one at a time. We just have to be smart about it."

Before they both then split up going in opposite directions as Amelia quietly snuck up behind one of the infected and grabbed it as she thrusted her shiv into its throat and slowly lowered it towards the ground as it choked on its blood before pulling her shiv out again, meanwhile Ellie did the same to another infected on the other side of the room. They continued like that until all of the infected in the room had been taken out.

After the infected had been cleared, both Amelia and Ellie took off their masks and Amelia pointed up at the hole in the roof as she said, "There, if we can find something to climb up we could get out through that hole." Ellie began searching the room for something they could use until she found some cables and Ellie looked at Amelia and said,

"I found some cables, but I might need a hand getting them free though."

So Amelia walked over to Ellie and lifted up the metal fan that the cables were stuck under, just enough for Ellie to pull most of the cable free before dropping the fan once more. Ellie then tossed the cable over the vent hanging across the hole and Amelia pulled on the cable on the other side to see if it was stable enough, before she then looked back at Ellie as she said, "Ok, this will hold at least. Just be careful." Ellie motioned to the cable as she looked at Amelia and replied,

"Well, after you Amy."

Amelia then slowly began climbing up the cable and onto the roof before Ellie then slowly climbed up after her, when they reached the roof they could still see their horses or at least they could make them out in the snow storm that was getting heavier as Amelia looked at Ellie as she said, "The storm is getting bad, we should head to the outpost before it gets any worse." Ellie nodded her head at Amelia and replied,

"Yeah, good idea."

Before both girls then slid down the roof and landed on the ground and got on their horses as they galloped through the snow, as they were riding Ellie said, "How much further to the outpost, Amy?" Amelia tilted her head back at Ellie and replied,

"It's not much further, just follow me."

Suddenly Ellie lost sight of Amelia through the storm, so she called out, "Amy! Amy, where are you?" and after a few minutes of riding blindly through the snow, Ellie could see Amelia sitting on her horse waiting for her and Ellie let out a sigh of relief as she said, "Oh thank god! I thought I lost you." Amelia smiled at Ellie and replied,

"You can't get rid of me that easily, come on. We're almost there."

When they arrived at the outpost, both Ellie and Amelia lead their horses inside before Amelia closed the door behind them. Ellie looked at Amelia as she said, "Have you been here before?" Amelia looked back at Ellie and replied,

"I've been past this building, but I've never actually been inside."

As both Amelia and Ellie walked through the building up to the area that had a log in book layed across the table, Amelia walked towards the window on the other side of the room as she looked at Ellie and said, "Mind signing us in?" Ellie nodded her head and replied,

"Sure."

Ellie then walked over towards the table and opened the book, inside she could see the names of people who had been here before them. As she looked through the list of names that read,

Dina/Jesse - All Clear.

Dina/Eugene - All Clear.

Jesse/Ellie - All Clear.

Ellie/Eugene - All Clear.

Amelia/Dina - A couple of Runners, All Clear.

Jesse/Amelia - One Clicker and a couple of Runners, All Clear.

Amelia/Eugene - All Clear.

Ellie/Amelia - All Clear.

After signing their names into the book, Ellie walked over to the window to join Amelia who was looking down at her necklace before she said in shock, "Holy shit! You're a Firefly? Why didn't you tell me?" Amelia looked up at Ellie and saw the shocked look on her face, before she then let out a small sigh and replied,

"I...was a Firefly, Ellie. And not just me, my sister was a Firefly too."

She took a deep breath before she added, "I didn't tell you or anyone else, because...because I didn't think it was a big deal. Besides, we both know there are no more Fireflys..." Then a few tears began forming in Amelia's eyes as she looked at Ellie as she asked, "So what happens now then, Ellie? Are you going to tell Maria when we get back?"

Suddenly, Ellie walked forward and wrapped her arms around Amelia in a hug to try and comfort her before she smiled as she replied, "Don't be such a fucking idiot Amy, Maria probably already knew you were a Firefly because Tommy used to be a Firefly." She then looked into Amelia's eyes as she added, "This isn't going to change how I feel about you Amy, we're friends. And you being a Firefly...isn't going to change that, okay?"

Amelia sniffled a little and wiped her eyes as she replied, "Ok, lets see what else we can find here. We should take what supplies we can find." Ellie nodded her head and said,

"Yeah, we should grab what we can since we're gonna be stuck here for a while."

So both Amelia and Ellie continued searching the outpost for any supplies they could use, before Amelia found a set of stairs leading down to a basement as she looked back at Ellie as she asked, "Wanna see what's down there?" Ellie looked back at Amelia and replied,

"Sure, there could be some supplies down there we could use. Or...we could end up walking into someone's sex dungeon."

Amelia scrunched her face a little as she slowly began descending down the stairs as she said, "I hope it's not a sex dungeon down here." Ellie let out a small chuckle as she followed Amelia down the stairs and as Amelia pushed open the door at the end of the hallway, they could see a few dead plants sitting in some pots across some shelves and what looked to be a few cigarettes sitting in a jar on a table.

As they looked around the room, Ellie looked at Amelia as she said, "I wonder who was growing all this weed down here?" Amelia looked back at Ellie and replied,

"Not sure, but if I had to take a guess I'd say Eugene. He usually had some on him when we went out for Patrol."

Then as the girls continued looking around the room, Ellie picked up the jar full of cigarettes as she said, "Well at least these look like they're still good." Before Ellie then tried to unscrew the lid off the jar but had no luck, Amelia smiled at Ellie and held out hand and said,

"Want me to open that, Ellie?"

Ellie handed the jar to Amelia as she said in a slightly defeated tone, "You're welcome to try, I didn't have any luck getting that thing open." So Amelia tried to open the lid of the jar and had the same trouble as Ellie did, before she then threw the jar on the ground shattering it causing Ellie to jump a little. Before Ellie then picked up one of the cigarettes from the ground as Amelia said,

"It's open at least."

After Ellie lit the cigarette and took a puff from it, she passed it to Amelia as they sat down on the sofa and Amelia took a puff from the cigarette and coughed a little before she smiled as she said, "This stuff is a little heavier than what I'm used to, but it's pretty good." Then Amelia looked at Ellie as she added, "Be honest with me Ellie, would you ever kiss me? I've seen the way you and Dina interact with each other and...you might not wanna admit it but I can tell that you like her. Can't say I blame you, I mean look at her, she's hot. She's sweet. Where as I'm...not sure if I am good enough for anyone..."

It was silent for a moment as Ellie looked at Amelia, she knew she needed to say something to reassure her but she didn't know what she wanted to say, eventually Ellie mustered the courage to say something as she took a deep breath as she said, "I mean...you're nice as well Amy, I know that me and Dina kissed, but one kiss dosen't mean anything. Me and Dina are just friends." before she then let out a small sigh as she added, "Fuck, I'm not good with words."

Suddenly Ellie leaned forward and pulled Amelia into a kiss as their lips pressed together, Amelia's eyes widened a little at first due to shock, before she then eventually began kissing back. Their hands quickly wrapped around each other's backs as their make out session slowly began getting more and more intense, before Amelia then slowly laid Ellie down on the sofa as the two of them continued kissing.

Later…

Both Amelia and Ellie were laying next to each other on the sofa in their underwear, Ellie smiled at Amelia as she asked, "So what made you join the Fireflies, Amy?" Amelia smiled back at Ellie and took a deep breath and replied,

"I wanted to join the Fireflies, not because I thought it was cool or anything like that. I joined because I wanted to make a difference, like I wanted my life to mean something."

Ellie nodded her head at Amelia as she listened as she asked, "What about your sister? You said she was a Firefly too." Amelia took a deep breath and replied,

"My sister Olivia joined the Fireflies not long after I did, because she was worried that I was going to get myself killed or that I was abandoning her. After she joined, I told her that I would never abandon her and that I knew what I was doing."

Before Ellie or Amelia could say anything else, Jesse and Dina came into the room as he said to them, "Really? You two have a Job to do, you know that?" Amelia scrambled to get her jeans back on as she blushed a little in embarrassment and looked at Jesse and replied,

"Could you turn around Jesse, please."

As Jesse turned around he saw the dead plants on the shelves as he said with his back turned, "Is that weed? You have a lot of people counting on you right?" After both Ellie and Amelia got dressed again, Amelia looked at Jesse and replied,

"I know, we were just waiting out the storm. Besides, I thought you and Dina were meant to be checking on Tommy and Joel?"

Dina then looked at both Amelia and Ellie as she said, "We were, but...Tommy and Joel never showed up." Both Amelia and Ellie grabbed their backpacks as Ellie looked at both Jesse and Dina and replied in a slightly shocked tone,

"That doesn't sound like Tommy or Joel, We should spread out and look for them."

Jesse nodded his head at Ellie as he said, "Alright, here's what we'll do. I'll take north, Dina takes west, and you and Amy take east. Let's be smart about this." Before the four of them set out in search of Tommy and Joel.

While both Amelia and Ellie were riding through the snow, they saw a mansion and slowed their horses to a stop before getting off them as Ellie said, "We'll be back, Shimmer." and Amelia gently patted her horse and said,

"Be a good girl now, Storm."

Then both Amelia and Ellie managed to sneak through a gap in the fence and took a deep breath as Ellie said, "Please be okay, Tommy." and as they entered through a side door into the Mansion, they could hear faint cries of pain and Amelia looked at Ellie and quietly said in a slightly concerned tone,

"Joel!"

As they continued walking through the mansion, the cries of pain slowly started to get louder as they got closer towards the source, before both Ellie and Amelia found where the sound was coming from and burst through the door. One of the members of the Washington Liberation Front lunged at Ellie and Ellie threw a right hand at his Jaw knocking him to the ground before she was eventually pinned to the ground.

Meanwhile some other members of the Washington Liberation Front pinned Amelia up against a nearby wall, as Amelia struggled to break free as she shouted, "Get the fuck off me!" While Ellie looked at Joel as she was laying on the ground and said,

"Joel get up, get the fuck up Joel!"

As one of the members of the Washington Liberation Front was checking Amelia for any weapons, he pulled out a bloodied Firefly necklace from her pocket and Amelia struggled as she screamed, "Give that back!" Owen then came into the room as he took the bloodied necklace from one of the people that searched Amelia, before he looked at Amelia and asked,

"Who's is this?"

Amelia scowled at Owen as she replied, "It was my sister's." Owen slowly nodded his head at Amelia and said,

"Right, sure. How do I know you didn't just steal these necklaces?"

Amelia scowled at Owen as she yelled, "Fuck you! My sister and I earned our place in the Fireflies." Owen looked at Amelia and smiled slightly and asked,

"And where is your sister now?"

Amelia continued to struggle to break free as she scowled at Owen as she lowered her head slightly and replied, "She's dead…" Owen looked at Amelia and asked,

"Who killed her? Was it by one of the infected?"

Amelia then glared at Owen, her eyes filled with rage as she grit her teeth as she replied, "Me, I killed my sister! I didn't have a choice! Are you happy now, you sick fuck?" Owen then walked over towards a pigtailed girl holding a bloodied golf club and said to her,

"We're done here, we need to move before the whole town is on us. End it, now."

The pigtailed girl looked at both Ellie and Amelia before looking back at Joel and slamming the golf club into his skull killing him, both Amelia and Ellie cried out before they were knocked out cold and Amelia's body collapsed to the ground in a heap. A few minutes later, both Amelia and Ellie slowly started regaining consciousness as they faintly heard Dina's voice as she said, "Amy! Ellie! Jesse, they're down here!" before she then added, "Ellie, I'm so sorry."

A few tears ran down both Ellie and Amelia's faces as they stared at Joel's lifeless body as Jesse eventually entered the room, Amelia slowly reached out and grabbed her sister's necklace that was on the ground in front of her, while Jesse checked on Tommy before he then walked over to help Amelia up to her feet as Dina lifted Ellie up to her feet.

That night…

Ellie was busy packing her backpack inside her house when she heard a knock on the door, she opened the door and saw Tommy standing outside holding a box of food. Tommy looked at Ellie as he asked, "Mind if I come in?" Ellie stood to one side as she looked at Tommy and replied,

"Sure."

Tommy walked inside as Ellie closed the door behind him before she sat down on the sofa as Tommy sat down next to her and placed the box of food on the table, Ellie looked at Tommy as she said, "I'm going after them. You can't stop me or try to talk me out of this, you know that?" Tommy looked at Ellie and replied,

"I know, Maria wanted me to make sure everyone had something to eat. But you don't know how many people they have or how well armed they are."

Ellie looked at Tommy as she said, "So you're saying that they just get to get away with this?" Tommy shook his head as he looked at Ellie and replied,

"Nobody wants that. We'll make them pay."

Ellie looked at Tommy as she said, "Well it sure sounds like it, Washington Liberation Front, WLF. That's what you said they were wearing. I'm going after them Tommy, and you can't stop me." Tommy looked at Ellie and asked,

"And how would you get to Seattle from here? On foot?"

Ellie got up and continued packing her backpack and looked at Tommy as she replied, "If I have to." Tommy then stood and looked at Ellie and said,

"Look, give me one day. I'll talk to Maria and see if she can spare some folks. If not then...I'll figure something out. Just one day, that's all I'm asking."

Ellie looked at Tommy as she replied, "Fine." before she let out a small sigh as she added, "I'm going to check on Amy so I'll walk you out, and if nothing has changed by tomorrow then I'm going to Seattle. Whether Maria or you are ok with it or not."

Before Ellie then walked towards the door with Tommy and opened it, letting Tommy walk out first before walking out and closing the door after him. The two of them then walked down the road a little before going their separate ways as Ellie began making her way towards Amelia's house.

Meanwhile inside Amelia's house, Amelia started to pack her backpack before she stopped as she looked at her sister's bloodied necklace and gripped it tightly in her hand. She then walked over to the chair that was placed under a noose hanging from the ceiling and let out a small sigh, she thought about taking her own life and ending her pain. She had even written a note and left it on the table in case anyone discovered her body. She looked up at the noose as she thought to herself, "As tempting as it is to just end my pain, those assholes have to pay for what they've done. I have to try and stay strong."

Then Amelia heard a knock on her door, so she took a deep breath before she went to open it. When she opened the door, she saw Dina standing outside and Ellie walking up the path towards her house before she said, "Hey guys, what brings you here at this late hour?" Dina smiled slightly at Amelia and replied,

"We wanted to check up on you and make sure you were doing okay, mind if we come in?"

Amelia's eyes widened a little as she looked at both Dina and Ellie, before she then slowly stood to one side as she said, "Umm sure, I guess I could use some company at the moment." So both Ellie and Dina walked inside as Amelia closed the door behind them. Once inside, Ellie noticed the noose hanging from the ceiling and looked back at Amelia in shock and asked,

"Fuck, Amy you weren't thinking of...doing this? Were you?"

Dina picked up the note that was on the table as she looked at Ellie as she said, "By the looks of things, it looks like Amy at least considered the idea. She's written something someone usually writes before taking their own life." Amelia frowned and let out a heavy sigh as she looked at both Dina and Ellie and said,

"You're right Dina, I had thought about committing suicide. But then I realized that I have to try and remain strong, if not for me then...I have to be strong for you guys."

Then Amelia sat down on the sofa and buried her head in her hands, as Dina walked over and sat down next to her and wrapped her arm around her to try and comfort her as she said, "Amy, we're here for you. Me, Ellie, Jesse, we're all here for you no matter what. I promise." Ellie crouched down in front of Amelia and placed her hand on her knee and said,

"Dina's right, Amy. Your problems are our problems, we look out for each other as friends." before she then took a deep breath as she added, "It must be rough not having your sister around. You don't have to come with us tomorrow, I don't wanna put you through any more pain than you've already suffered."

Amelia looked up at Ellie and sniffled slightly as she replied, "I've already made up my mind Ellie, I'm going with you to Seattle. Those assholes need to pay for what they did." Dina looked at Amelia and smiled slightly and said,

"Alright then, we'll leave you to get some rest. But...if you change your mind in the morning, we'll understand."
