Here is the sixteenth Supplement for the Heart in 'Winning Takes Heart', released at the right moment in the story. This is the Supplement that was teased back at the start of the Laverre arc and now it is finally a realization for y'all to enjoy. For those wondering, this Supplement takes place between Parts CXXXVIII and CXXXIX in Winning and is the first of two Supplements coming out in this period. However, that is all the administrative stuff I have but there is a guest review from the last Supplement that needs responding too which I will do now.
To Guest (guest), thank you for your review and fittingly, this is a great Supplement to answer it as we are now in Laverre, and Dawn and Valerie are having a chat about the type. To answer your query, there are still outliers. Dedenne was one of two remaining, non-legendary, Pokémon who gained it as part of a whole evolutionary line or who don't evolve that hadn't been confirmed before now (pending second recorded instance) with the only remaining outlier in this category being Mimikyu for similar reasons of not looking like a typical fairy type, not common, not often used in battle, and in its case a unique typing as it's the only ghost and fairy type (unconfirmed in the Hearts universe). The other unconfirmed fairy types are the two Pokémon that either add (Audino) or have a type change (Altaria) upon Mega Evolution, any other Pokémon other than Sylveon, Primarina and Alolan Ninetales that add or change to it upon evolution so it's prior stage(s) don't have it so Galarian Weezing, Galarian Rapidash, and Hatterene at least, and all legendary or mythical Pokémon with the type as they can't be checked. One more outlier will have its first point of contact either in Winning or this Supplement before the end, but I won't say which one it is.
That is all I have for now which means that it is time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the Winning's Sixteenth Supplement For the Heart: Discussing the Discovery of Fairies.
Disclaimer: I do not own Pokémon.
Discussing the Discovery of Fairies
Dawn headed into the Laverre Gym a little nervous about the one-on-one tea talk with Valerie, but she'd done this before with Erika back in Celadon City in Kanto about a year ago, so it wasn't unusual for her. What made her nervous though was the fact that this tea was with the only fairy type specialist in the world, and she was very insistent on having it with Dawn so she could learn more about how Dawn helped discovery the type.
Valerie had invited the others to join but they had all turned her down politely. This wasn't Ash's thing, so Dawn understood why he wasn't coming and instead was just taking the day off in the city. Meanwhile, May and Serena were coming to join them later if they had the time but right now they were doing their own thing.
Dawn understood why the other girls couldn't make it right away and if she wasn't coming to this tea she would either be enjoying a date day with Ash in Laverre before they left for Dendemille Town and the Showcase that was coming up there that Dawn intended on winning. Well, that or she would be helping May with Serena's research and training for her upcoming Contests.
That was what her female friends and rivals were doing now, and Dawn couldn't fault them as research and training were essential for doing well in Contests, especially if you were an underdog. This was made clearer to them after Serena's loss in the recent Laverre Contest. She needed to step up if she wished to get at least one more ribbon this year so that she could make a run at the Ribbon Cup at the Grand Festival via at least the wildcard weekend.
All that was what the others were doing with their day off after the busy week they'd spent in Laverre City, and it had been a really busy week. They'd arrived right at the start of the Laverre Fashion Week, so the gym was closed when they visited but that just started the chain of events that made the week busier than planned. Valerie had recognized Ash at once and shown her gratitude for his reveal of fairy types, along with that for Dawn's role in it, and that was just the tip of the iceberg.
Almost immediately after meeting Valerie, the Nimbasa gym leader from Unova and a woman who was basically the same as Valerie except for her type specialty and appearance had arrived to challenge her to see who was better at what they did. Somehow that had led to Dawn and the other girls, as well as Pikachu due to Elesa's specialty being in electric types, getting roped into a fashion show that was fun but ended in a tie between the gym leaders. That led to them settling it with a Pokémon battle which Ash officiated, but that also ended in a tie the next day.
After all that there was still the Laverre Contest, the rest of the fashion week, and finally Ash's gym battle with Valerie the day after the week ended to deal with. However, the last of those, Ash's battle with Valerie, had been yesterday and now it was time for a bit of a break before leaving.
That meant that it was time for Dawn's tea with Valerie and the moment she introduced Valerie to Togekiss, Dawn's Pokémon who had started the ball rolling that lead to the discover of the emergence of fairy types. The how and why the type suddenly came into being and why only certain Pokémon changed or added the type was still unknown however and Dawn had a feeling that the answer wouldn't be found anytime soon.
In preparation for her tea, Dawn had called in Togekiss that morning from Kanto for the meeting. She was only coming in for this as she was needed back at the ranch as soon as possible. Apparently, her motherly attitude to things had been really useful in keeping the peace between all the Pokémon on the ranch and Professor Oak didn't want her to be gone too long as she kept the others in line. For the most part it wasn't too bad, but Dawn's Ursaring was still not adapting well though Togekiss was making good progress with Ursaring so the sooner she was back the better.
"Ah Dawn, good to see you again." A voice called out to her as she entered the large entrance room of the gym which for once wasn't bustling with activity as brightly colored girls barked orders and moved things for their boss. "Valerie is waiting for you by the inner garden. Please follow me."
Dawn looked over to see the black clad, black haired, Furisode girl she knew was called Kannon calling over to her. While Dawn wasn't sure how the hierarchy of the girls worked, she'd deduced that Kannon had to be highly ranked as she seemed to be the main organizer of the girls and the go to one when Valerie needed something important done.
In fact, the girl was Valerie's designated battle referee for her gym battles from what Dawn had heard the day before while she, Malamar, and Machamp were cleaning up the mess the latter two made. However, because Elesa was in town and had insisted that she officiate Ash's battle with Valerie, Kannon hadn't been needed for it.
"Of course, please lead the way." Dawn said with a slight bow of her head at the girl, and she fell into step behind her.
Kannon led Dawn out of the main room and into a nice-looking courtyard that was deeper in the building than anywhere she'd been before in the sprawling gym. It was odd to have it inside, but Dawn had learned that there was a lot going on in the gym and given the building's size it had the space for it. As such she didn't question anything as she was led to a small room off the garden.
The room itself was a simple wooden room accessible by a sliding door that would look out of place anywhere else in Kalos Dawn felt but fit the Laverre gym perfectly. Inside it was spartan with just a small table in the center and a pair of cushions to kneel on before it. One of the cushions was already occupied by Valerie in all her billowing glory as she carefully poured two cups of tea for them.
"Please, take a seat." Valerie said not looking up and Dawn could see why as the woman was pouring tea with her hands covered by her sleeves, so she really needed to focus on that. "I hope that this is ok for you, it's an imported blend from my home region of Johto. As much as I love Kalos, the one thing I never got a taste for was the tea, they like it a little too sweet for my own tastes."
"On that I can agree." Dawn said as she knelt on the other cushion, Piplup jumping off her head and going over to where Valerie's Spritzee, Sylveon, Mawile, and Mr. Mime where to introduce himself, especially to the cute looking Mawile, while the humans engaged in their strange ritual. "I was going to say that this is all very Johto-like."
"You've been to Johto I take it then." Valerie said looking up and smiling at Dawn as she finished pouring the tea. "And yes this room is a lot like some of the places back at my parents' estate, I had it converted to look like this when I took over as gym leader though a good portion of the designs in the gym were already a blend of Kalos and Johto styles before I moved in."
"I spent a few months there about 2 years ago and I have a few good friends who are from it who I met at a Johto Festival in Sinnoh, so I know a bit about the region." Dawn said waiting for the tea to cool a little before drinking it. "I went there after a brief trip to Unova where I met Ash again and finally accepted the depth of my feelings for him, but I had to go to Johto for the Wallace Cup. After that I competed on the Johto Contest circuit. My goal was to win it all there and then find Ash."
"And did you?" Valerie asked curiously. "Achieve all your goals that is, clearly you found Ash again. I don't know much about you Dawn, but I'd like to know more. I know you are a Top Coordinator though; did you win the Grand Festival in either mine or your own home regions?"
"Alas no, I actually lost both the Sinnoh and Johto finals by a point each, it was heartbreaking both times." Dawn said with a shake of her head. "So, I didn't win either. I won Ash's home region of Kanto last year though so that's how I claimed the title of Top Coordinator and my victory there was a decisive one by Battle Off, but I won't go into any more detail as it was against a former childhood friend who's no longer the guy I grew up with. I didn't lose a regular Contest in Johto though which isn't easy to do, and Ash did come to that Grand Festival, that was where we confessed to each other which was worth it, but I didn't win."
"I see so there was a silver lining on Mt. Silver." Valerie said with a smile at the pun before taking a sip of tea which was Dawn's cue for some of her own and she had to agree it was better than the Kalos stuff she'd had during her current journey but as with Valerie, Dawn didn't have the sweet tooth that someone like Serena who was from Kalos had. "Of course, it has been years since I've been back and Kalos is my home now, but I do miss Johto at times."
"If I may ask." Dawn began as she set down her cup. "How did you end up in Kalos?"
"That is a bit of a long story, but I don't mind explaining it, it has been a while since I got to tell it." Valerie said as she took another sip of tea. "As I've stated, and as my accent denotes as it is one thing that has never changed for me, I am originally from Johto, as is my whole family. My parents own a large estate in the countryside outside of Ecruteak City which is where I was born and grew up. However, I always knew that I'd never stay there long term."
"You did?" Dawn asked confused.
"I did." Valerie said with a small nod. "You see, my family has always had a trait of wanderlust in their veins, and I inherited that fully. My parents were trainers back in their day and visited all known regions, catching many Pokémon and bringing them back to the estate in Johto so I grew up with stories of their adventures and with Pokémon from all over the world, both the ones under my parents' ownership and plenty of wild ones who lived there. I am pretty sure that is where it all started for me."
"All started?" Dawn asked still a little confused as she took a sip of tea. "What do you mean by that?"
"What I mean is that I have always wished that I was a Pokémon, and I am pretty sure my upbringing led to it." Valerie said nonchalantly though it was something Dawn recalled the woman saying before though not going into any detail about. "Growing up on an estate with mostly Pokémon for friends likely led to that desire, along with my own quirky nature I feel. Over the years I learned to speak to some Pokémon but only some and I'll get into that later, so I wanted to be one."
"Ah I see that does explain a bit." Dawn said. "And your designs are part of that as you draw heavily from Pokémon in your patterns."
"That I do, I always have and always will." Valerie said. "I feel a close kinship with many Pokémon though my own ownership is pretty small. Growing up with Pokémon from all the regions really helped but that wasn't enough for me, I wanted to see the world rather than have it brought to me."
"Who doesn't." Dawn said. "I've been to 6 regions now, though my time in Hoenn was brief and limited to one city, and I don't want to stop anytime soon. I am sure that with Ash we will see Alola and Galar together one day."
"Beautiful regions but I've only been to each once over the years." Valerie said. "And just to visit, I am too busy here most of the time to leave Laverre, so I don't travel like I used to but as I am home here it's different."
"On that, how did you find your way from Johto to Kalos?" Dawn asked. "Most people I know seldom leave their home region unless they are a trainer or coordinator who needs to, or they do so for work, and very few go as far as flying from Johto to Kalos."
"True few do but I knew that when I was old enough I'd leave home and find where I was meant to be." Valerie said. "And when I was 10 I did just that, I left home and while I've been back to visit many times I never looked back on my journey. Spritzee and I knew that we would find our own home one day and that's just what we did."
"Wait, Spritzee was your starter Pokémon?" Dawn asked really confused. "How does a Johto girl get a Spritzee as a starter?"
"She finds a cute pink egg that had been abandoned on her family's estate and brought it home to care for that's how." Valerie said with a smile at the memory. "I found it shortly before I was supposed to head to New Bark Town to get my starter Pokémon. Instead, my dad thought I should care for the egg and use that Pokémon instead as the connection would be stronger if it hatched for me, so I did. It hatched into a Spritzee not long afterwards and instantly we had a connection beyond the normal hatchling/trainer connection as Spritzee was one of the species I could talk to."
"You mentioned that it was limited." Dawn said. "How so?"
"It's hard to say." Valerie said thinking on it. "But there were only certain Pokémon that I could learn their language for. I thought it was just the ones I found the cutest but strongest as it was Pokémon like Clefairy, Jigglypuff, Eevee, Snubull, Marill, Spritzee, Swirlix, Ralts, Cottonee, Mime Jr. and the likes, plus their evolve forms with the exception of Eevee as I could only speak with Sylveons and not the other evolutions for some reason. As there was not common type I figured that my preference was cute Pokémon who hid their power behind their cuteness with a low-level affinity for normal types as a good few were that at the time."
"That does make sense." Dawn said seeing the similarities in the Pokémon listed right away. "And with no real connection between those Pokémon at the time you couldn't claim a true type specialty."
"Yes but I will get more into it in a bit once we get onto your stories and how your actions helped me even if you didn't know." Valerie said with a smile at Dawn. "Back to my backstory though as I am far from done with it."
"Yes, I do want to learn more." Dawn said smiling back at the woman. "I've had tea and talked with a few of the Kanto gym leaders, and I liked learning about their pasts even if it was hard in one case."
"Ah you've had the pleasure of meeting Sabrina and learning her past then." Valerie said knowing right away who Dawn was referring to. "An amazingly strong woman that one given what she went through."
"You know about that?" Dawn asked surprised.
"I am a Kalos gym leader and have been for a while." Valerie said. "I met her on a trip I made to Anistar a few years back when she was with Olympia and learned of her issues though it wasn't until after she left that Olympia revealed the truth of who the mysterious Sabi was. It is good to hear that she is doing well."
"Very it seems, or at least as good as she can with her problems and constant struggles that her addiction has caused." Dawn said. "I saw her recently at Ash's last party and she was doing well though she needed a break or two to clear her head as the attendance was right at her tolerable limit I think."
"Good for her." Valerie said before moving on with the conversation. "But back to my own story of how I ended up here, it was a bit of a winding journey."
"Most are." Dawn admitted thinking of her own journey to this point in her life. "I didn't expect you to come straight to Kalos after all."
"No, I spent my first 3 years in Johto and Kanto." Valerie said. "Wandering around them as they are connected and seeing all that they had to offer. During that time, I befriended and caught an Eevee and a Mime Jr. with the latter evolving before I left Kanto for Hoenn."
"3 years is a long time." Dawn said. "What did you do during that period?"
"Tried to find myself." Valerie said simply. "I dabbled in Contests and gym battles but as much as I enjoyed the latter it wasn't a career for me. I could see myself running a gym but not traveling all over just to challenge them. I wanted to have something else in life and I couldn't find it in Johto or Kanto, so I left for Hoenn as it was the nearest region to me at the time. Alas, despite finding my Mawile there I didn't find what I was looking for in Hoenn. Everything was too similar in that part of the world and after a year in Hoenn I knew I had to go farther afield to find it. That was when Spritzee suggested that we go to her home region that she knew she was from as a species even if she was born in Johto."
"I can see that." Dawn said unsure what else to say on that front. "And Spritzee is a Kalos native species from what I know of."
"It is and so when I was 14 I left Hoenn and that part of the world and came out here to see Kalos for myself." Valerie said with a smile. "And as soon as I landed in Lumiose City I knew that I was in the right region. Not the right city, Lumiose is too bustling and metropolitan for my long-term tastes, but Kalos in general was what I was looking for, though I couldn't explain why, and thus I began to explore it."
"You didn't come here right away?" Dawn asked.
"No, I went with the flow and just started wandering around with no sense of direction so that I could see the region as a whole." Valerie said. "My Eevee evolved during that period into a Sylveon which felt right given how Kalos was the region where that evolution was first recorded though it is still unclear how Eevee evolves into Sylveon beyond friendship but I for one believe there is a second, undiscovered, factor. That occurred shortly after leaving Lumiose, so I took it as a sign that I was meant to stay in Kalos."
"Kalos is a nice region." Dawn said. "I've seen most of the west of it, as well as Santalune City in the southeast, and we are heading east soon to see more."
"Well, you do have to head to Anistar and Snowbelle so you will see the rest of what the region has to offer." Valerie said. "And I've seen all of Kalos though I started to the southeast and saw the east before returning to Lumiose after I reached Dendemille Town and then headed north. It was as I was traversing the wetlands between here and Lumiose that I began to feel like my journey was finally coming to an end. Kalos is rich with diversity in its Pokémon and environment so I knew that the right place would speak to me. That place turned out to be Laverre City."
"You knew that you would lay down roots here?" Dawn asked.
"Almost at once." Valerie said with a slight chuckle at Dawn's clearly unintended pun. "I think it was this tree that really got me and how the harmony of human, Pokémon, and nature worked here that convinced me to stay. It also helped that there is clear Johto influences in the city, so it was as if my past, present, and future all came together in one place the moment I arrived, and I knew that it was time to stop. I had been traveling for almost 5 years, but I'd found my home."
"That is impressive." Dawn said. "I know that Sinnoh will always be my home even if I haven't been back in years, but I will also always like to travel wherever Ash leads me as he too is a wanderer who can't stay put for long."
"I got that from him, he won't settle down ever I think." Valerie said with a smile before she took another sip of tea. "For a while I was worried that that might be me until I found Laverre and knew I had found what I was looking for. Next up was what to do with my life."
"Fashion." Dawn said simply.
"Yup, that was another thing Kalos helped me with." Valerie said. "When I arrived Lumiose as the main city, it is the biggest in the world I believe, was the center of fashion here and I saw more than just what I was used to back home and in those regions. Add in the way humans and Pokémon work well together here, especially with how they style their Furfrous, and I knew that I wanted to become a designer who blended her own style and history with Pokémon. That was how I started out."
"And you had success." Dawn said thinking on her own Furfrou and her unique style. "You are now the top designer in Kalos and one of the best in the world."
"Elesa is a true rival to me in that regard but yes I've made a name for myself, and it wasn't intentional." Valerie said. "I just wanted to settle down here and do what I loved, I never expected what happened next to catapult me all the way to the top within a year but, well, Kalos does have something that helped me."
"It does?" Dawn asked. "What?"
"Why Showcases of course." Valerie said simply. "They are effectively a fashion show for girlie girls to dress up and show off with their Pokémon. While I wasn't someone who wanted to compete in them, I like battling too much, I loved the fashion aspect and began making dresses and outfits for girls who enjoyed competing in the Showcases. I am exclusively a female fashion designer and with the gender specific Showcases here I knew that I'd always have a market for my work. What I wasn't expecting was what happened when I was 17 so only 2 years after settling down here."
"What happened?" Dawn asked intrigued.
"The winner was a Laverre girl who I made all her dresses for." Valerie said. "And by winner I mean she beat the reigning Kalos Queen that year as a rookie to claim the title for herself while only losing one, her first, Showcase along the way. She was something else and the entire time she wore my outfits in her Showcases, she even came back to Laverre between Showcases to get more so that she never wore the same one twice. She also never forgot to thank me for what I did for her in her post Showcase interviews."
"And with her winning you were suddenly the personal designer to the Kalos Queen." Dawn said understanding how Valerie was catapulted to the top so quickly.
"Yes and of course that led to many girls wanting to learn from me after that or at least have a Valerie dress." Valerie said. "My business exploded, and I went with it, growing larger and larger until Laverre became the fashion capital of Kalos and I formed the Furisode girls to help me out with all the orders and requests I was getting. They become my apprentices because I needed it and now they are invaluable to me for all they do. All of this was possible because the Kalos Queen at the time was my client."
"That would do that." Dawn said understanding how Valerie became what she was. "But you don't say that it was Aria, so I take it that it was before her time."
"At least 5 Queens before her." Valerie said thinking back on it. "The girl who I helped held the title for two more years before losing it and leaving Kalos to go on her own journey I believe. Since then, I've been the exclusive designer for three of the next 5 Queens but not Aria."
"I am surprised that more wouldn't want that." Dawn said.
"To an outsider you would be, but I understand why some avoided me." Valerie said. "To become Kalos Queen a girl has to have some intrinsic, unique, unteachable quality inherent to them and relying on someone else to be your designer can be a hinderance if your skills lie in your own presentation. With Aria, who's held the title for a few years now, she does her own work on her dresses, but she is something else, easily the greatest Kalos Queen of my time here. I've made some dresses for her public appearances in the past but nothing for a Showcase or the Master Class."
"Serena was saying about that quality, it's what she's seeking with her Contests this year." Dawn said as she got what Valerie was saying on this front. "She's hoping to find it through her own journey."
"I think she will but not in Kalos, that girl needs to see more of the world to find it I feel." Valerie said. "I watched her in the Master Class last year and while she posses the quality it's but a flicker right now and not the inferno that Aria has, that's why she lost to the Kalos Queen. Give it time, she will find what she needs to fuel it."
"I don't doubt it." Dawn said before realizing that there was still something missing from the story, and it was quite a big something as they were currently in the building in question. "So that is how you came here and became the top designer but how did you end up running the Laverre gym?"
"Ah that, that is the final part of my story and happened several years back." Valerie said. "It's pretty straightforward though. The gym has always been here, and this style has always existed in general despite so tweaks from me so when the last leader retired the Pokémon League reached out to me to take it over. By that point I was a notable citizen of Laverre, I needed the space the gym had for my fashion work as it was really kicking off back then, and I was known to use two normal types as my main two battle Pokémon and this gym has historically been a normal type gym, so it made sense. I saw the logic in the request, and I've always enjoyed battling so this was perfect for me."
"That does make sense and I know that there are many gym leaders who have notable other careers in addition to their duties as gym leaders." Dawn said. "We met Viola who is a photographer and back in Sinnoh Roark and Byron are notable archeologists and scientists as well as gym leaders. Hell, Clemont is an inventor."
"Yes it relatively is normal for a gym leader to have another notable career, though the Unova lot take it to the extreme." Valerie said. "I've been there a few times, though never Nimbasa but that will change next month, and their leaders all do other things like run a restaurant, a flying school, excavations, a library, and more. One of them is even a rock star and another a former actor and of course we've all met Elesa now and know what she does professionally."
"Ash is the one to talk to about that lot, he's faced at least 8 of the Unova gym leaders." Dawn said. "Maybe more as the Straiton gym is a tri-leader gym with no type preference I believe."
"That it is or was as it is now a solo water type gym due to two of the leaders being on leaves of absence." Valerie said. "But yes, that is how I became a normal type gym leader. However, something always felt off back then, I never had the natural affinity for the type that a leader is supposed to have but then everything changed and that is where you and Ash come in."
"We didn't mean for this to happen." Dawn admitted. "It just kinda did and we ended up at the center of it."
"I know but I am not complaining." Valerie said. "And on that note I think that it is time to shift focus to you. Please, can you bring out Togekiss so I can meet her and hear the first-hand story of how you met and the role you and Ash played in the discovery of the latest type, an act that inadvertently completed me."
"Of course." Dawn said as she pulled out a Poke Ball and opened it. "Togekiss, come on out and meet Valerie."
The ball burst open and in a flash of light the Jubilee Pokémon stood on her toes to the side. With a song, Togekiss ruffled her feathers in her form of a stretch and looked around at her new surroundings surprised that she was here but her human had asked for her to come in so who was she to refuse her.
"Wow, she's magnificent." Valerie said her eyes wide. "Toge, Togekiss, toge."
"Toge?" Togekiss asked as she looked at the strange human who was speaking to her in her own language though it was horribly accented and barely understandable at times. "Toge?"
"Yes I can understand you." Valerie said with a smile. "You are a beautiful Pokémon, truly worthy of your species name."
"Piplup." Piplup said happily as he just noticed that Togekiss was here and she was like Malamar, the mother of the group and looked after Piplup when he got hurt by Dawn's shenanigans. "Pip, Piplup."
"Toge." Togekiss said with a smile as she turned and embraced Piplup in her wings before he led her to meet the others.
"Togekiss has always been a mothering figure to my Pokémon, as well as Ash and Brock's back in Sinnoh." Dawn explain to a slightly confused Valerie. "Piplup was always fond of her so best to leave them for the moment."
"Of course, it's adorable." Valerie said watching them for a moment before turning back to Dawn. "And that plumage is amazing, I'll make you the perfect dress based off her unique pattern as no two Togekiss have the same pattern I believe."
"Thank you." Dawn said still surprised that Valerie would do so.
"Anyway." Valerie said turning back to Dawn and finishing her cup of tea before pouring another for each of them as she spoke. "How did you acquire such a Pokémon? From what I understand they are not common and require a few strange evolutions to reach their final stages."
"I got her as is actually." Dawn said. "She was my only evolved or fully evolved Pokémon that I acquired in Sinnoh, well one with evolution potential as Pachirisu doesn't evolve. However, I know that they are rare. My friend Misty had a Togepi she found as an egg, well Ash found it, but Togepi saw her when it hatched thus imprinting on Misty. That one evolved into a Togetic through their bond and was then released to protect other Togepi in some strange kingdom place in Hoenn I believe, and Misty didn't know that it could evolve again. It was a bit of a shock when she met Togekiss and almost further devolved the situation we were in."
"Come again?" Valerie asked. "Your friend Misty met Togekiss at a bad time?"
"Well yeah it was in the battle that we first observed the immunity after all." Dawn said with a shrug. "I'll get to that though, my history with Misty is, um, turbulent to say the least and before we finally made up we brought out the worst in each other whenever we met."
"I have a feeling I know what that means." Valerie said smiling a little at that. "And as it pertains to the story of how fairy types were discovered I look forward to hearing it but do start with how you came by a Togekiss."
"That is a fun and interesting story in its own right." Dawn said with a chuckle. "It was towards the end of my rookie year when it happened. I'd already qualified for the Grand Festival with 5 ribbons with plenty of time to spare but I love Contests so when we came across one in a place called Arrowroot Town we decided to watch it as we had the time for it. Of course, that was when fate intervened in the way it can only do so when Ash is around."
"I take it he's a magnet for trouble." Valerie said. "After what happened last week with Elesa and how he wasn't too surprised by it I can see that he's experienced things like that before."
"That was normal by Ash's standards." Dawn said. "As was Arrowroot actually. You see it turns out that the area where Arrowroot Town is in Sinnoh is near one of the many small kingdoms in the region, this one either ruled over, or at least represented, by a Princess Salvia."
"So Sinnoh has that just like Kalos." Valerie said. "There are plenty of strange nobility areas here between the main cities and towns, but I never understood them."
"Neither did I though the only ones I know about back home are Salvia's territory and the Lucario Kingdom which is different and a whole other adventure we had that year." Dawn said. "With Salvia though, it was me that she was looking for and not Ash. We learned this as we were preparing to go to the Contest when one of her attendants came up to Ash, myself and Brock. Naturally Brock hit on her and was jabbed by his Croagunk for it."
"I feel like that is another story to tell." Valerie said.
"Brock is a Pokémon Doctor student out in Kanto who used to be the Pewter City Gym Leader many years ago and his family still runs it." Dawn explained. "He met Ash early on his first journey and spent 5 of the next 6 years traveling with Ash all over Kanto, Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh. Brock always had a weakness for women and hit on any pretty girl, but various people stopped him and shortly after I met him it was his Croagunk who did the honors. He now has a fiancée which I still struggle to believe but the girl loves him and is something else, she's the only person to defeat my Spiritomb in battle."
"Well, there is someone out there for everyone." Valerie said simply. "And he sounds a bit like a male version of that Bonnie girl."
"That is an accurate comparison and Max was Brock's minder for two years back when he and May traveled with Ash and Brock, so he knows how it works." Dawn said. "Anyway, after Brock had been Poison Jabbed again by Croagunk, the attendant took us to Princess Salvia who wanted to see me specifically that day."
"Really, why?" Valerie asked.
"Because she had a request for me." Dawn said. "She wanted to swap places with me for the day so that she could finally experience a Contest as she loved them and always wanted to be a coordinator just once, but she couldn't be one due to her duties."
"Oh, but how could she do that?" Valerie asked a little confused.
"Well, it turns out that Salvia and I look a lot alike." Dawn said. "In fact, we could pass as identical twins when our hair is done the same if it wasn't for our accents as hers is really refined and cultured and mine is, well, that of a rube from rural Sinnoh."
"Ah the old switcheroo." Valerie said. "That explains a lot."
"Yup and because it's the kinda thing we'd do, I agreed to swap with her without anyone but us, Ash, Brock and her attendant knowing of it." Dawn said. "We changed clothes and hairstyles and she walked out with Ash and Brock while I took over her duties for the day while hoping no one realized that I wasn't the real Princess Salvia. As a result, she got to use my credentials to enter the Contest even though I already had 5 ribbons and for one day she could be a coordinator with her Togekiss."
"That does sound about right, a royal would be fitting for a Togekiss." Valerie said. "And you did her duties?"
"Yeah it wasn't pretty though Ash did like how I looked." Dawn said with a little blush. "But I managed it somehow, I think. I even went to part of the Contest as Salvia and watched her, as me, in it for a bit later. She would go on to win it with Togekiss and beat Jessilina in the final there. However, as she had achieved her dream, she gave the ribbon to Jessilina as she didn't need it and that allowed Jessilina to qualify for the Grand Festival as it was her 5th ribbon."
"That is nice of her and the respectful thing to do." Valerie said. "She must have a great sense of duty to do something like that, but a princess would."
"She certainly did and after that they all returned, and we swapped again so that no one knew what we'd done that day." Dawn said. "But after the second swap she gave me Togekiss so that Togekiss could leave the palace and see the world with me. It was a gift beyond what I deserved but I accepted and if she ever asks for Togekiss back of course I'll return her."
"Well, that is certain one way to get one and after seeing how things happen around Ash this doesn't surprise me." Valerie said. "Thank you for telling me about Togekiss and you meeting. Now, though, can you tell me how the fairy type path began?"
"Of course, I'll never forget that day." Dawn said inadvertently reaching up to her locket to grasp it. "It happened when I was in Cerulean City in Kanto. That's Misty's hometown and where she is the water type gym leader."
"This was about 18 months back or so, right?" Valerie asked. "Maybe a bit longer as it was at the end of a season if I recall the paper Professor Oak published on his research."
"Give or take I believe." Dawn said thinking back on it. "It was during the Indigo Conference the year before Ash revealed it to the world. You see, after Ash lost in the Vertress Conference in Unova, against Cameron in fact who he'd beat with Mr. Mime the next year, he came to Johto to see me as our friend Iris had finally breached his thick skull and made Ash realize he liked me as well. As such, Ash came to Johto to watch me in the Grand Festival there. He did and saw my heartbreaking loss in the final to a bitter, negative, rival of mine from Sinnoh called Ursula. Afterwards he saw me backstage, and we confessed and became an item. However, we didn't know what to do right away."
"But you would have been on Mt. Silver and in Johto so near enough to Kanto." Valerie said recalling her home region's geography well. "And that is where Ash is from."
"Correct and I'd never been to Kanto before, nor had I seen his home in Pallet Town." Dawn said. "I was going to after our adventures together in Sinnoh, but I didn't because my Buneary got a modeling offer and I was offered a role as a Poke Stylist that I couldn't say no to. That was why we split apart for 6 months and then I went to Unova to for it bit to broaden my knowledge of how to make Pokémon appealing for when I took on the Johto circuit and a chance meeting between Ash and the Sinnoh Champion Cynthia in Virbank City led to us reuniting briefly."
"So, you wanted to see his home then." Valerie said thinking. "And if I recall my home region well you would have headed to Goldenrod and then gotten the train to Saffron before heading to Pallet Town. That would be the fastest rout I believe."
"Correct." Dawn said. "Though we didn't stay in Saffron but headed straight to Cerulean upon arriving in Kanto. Once there, Ash decided to go and see Misty in her gym and say hello to her the day after we arrived as we arrived too late to see Misty right away. She was his traveling companion for his first 3 years, and he met her on his first day as a trainer after Pikachu destroyed her bike, something he's done a few times to girls now every time he starts an adventure in a new region."
"Now I get it." Valerie said with a small smile. "And let me guess, this Misty girl is in love with Ash, and he was too dense to see it."
"As deeply as I am if not more though I'd never admit that part to Misty's face." Dawn said. "And if I'm honest she's probably the only other girl other than me that Ash might have had feelings for, but I won which is all that matters. Of course, Ash knew none of this and took me to the gym to meet Misty and we ran into her, literally she ran into us as she left the gym and ended up on top of Ash."
"I see where this is going and am grateful I've never tangled with the green-eyed monster of jealousy." Valerie said. "You two got into it I take it."
"Pretty much." Dawn said. "Piplup helped diffuse it briefly as Misty loves water types but when she realized it was mine it wasn't a good start and by that point we both knew we were rivals for Ash. Then I told her that I was Ash's girlfriend and Misty lost it. She's a redhead by the way and her temper puts the stereotype to shame, especially when it is mixed with her love for Ash and her extreme jealousy that comes with it. She completely lost it in that moment because she realized that she lost."
"Probably at least partially justified." Valerie said.
"At least partially and, well, I rose to her bait so I'm not innocent in this either." Dawn said. "I knew that I had to shut her up and show her that I deserved Ash, that I was the dominant one so to speak and I was worthy of my win. The only way to do that was challenge her to a gym battle. Since then, I've actually faced all my rivals for Ash in battle though most were much more civil and therapeutic to ensure closure for us with only the most recent one being similar to Misty's battle, but Miette understood and wanted that kind of battle."
"Somehow it doesn't surprise me that Ash would have girls after him without knowing." Valerie said. "And a battle is the best way, it's how Elesa and I tried to settle our rivalry, so I understand and respect that. It was in this battle that the moment happened I take it."
"It was." Dawn said with a nod. "It was an official gym battle that was 3 on 3 and very back and forth between us. I started with Pachirisu who's an electric type and beat Misty's Staryu, but she knows the type well thanks to Pikachu, so she beat Pachirisu with her Starmie, but I beat that with Piplup as he knows how to fight well in water. Then, I, er, pushed her to use her best. She was going to anyway, but I wasn't expecting it and Misty went overboard."
"How so?" Valerie asked sipping her tea.
"Misty's best is a Gyarados." Dawn said. "And she used its Hyper Beam on Piplup."
"Piplup." Piplup yelled, he'd never fully forgiven Dawn for it. "Pip, Piplup."
"Oh, that is overkill." Valerie said as Togekiss comforted Piplup's anger.
"It was the first of many moments that Misty realized she needed to get help for but that's her story to tell though it did end with our friendship established and mended." Dawn said. "But I had to counter Gyarados and, well, the only Pokémon I had who could was Togekiss."
"Togekiss verses Gyarados, that is a match of love and hate if I ever saw one." Valerie said. "They both personify those emotions well."
"It was and it was something else." Dawn said remembering it well. "During the match Misty ordered Gyarados to use Dragon Pulse and it hit Togekiss cleanly in the back. We thought that that was it, but she flew out of the explosion it unharmed. That was the moment we realized something was up and I used that to swing the momentum in my favor. In the end I managed to land a few more hits and ended up throwing Gyarados into the glass ceiling of the gym with a few moves to win."
"Come again?" Valerie asked blinking at her. "I must not have heard you correctly there. Did you say that you threw a Gyarados into a ceiling with your Togekiss?"
"Yup and that is a sight that I will never forget." Dawn said with a chuckle. "The Cerulean battlefield is a pool due to Misty's type preference and the ceiling is about 30 feet in the air because of her Gyarados. Somehow Togekiss got it up there and then it crashed down to the water below. That is something you have to see to believe."
"I'll take your word on it." Valerie said unable to imagine what Dawn was describing. "So, you won that and had the first point of contact with the type that had suddenly appeared."
"Yup even got the Cascade Badge for my win." Dawn said opening her locket to show it to Valerie briefly before closing it. "Ash bought me this in Saffron a few months later and I keep that badge in her to remind myself of my first rival and that I should never take Ash for granted. I've won more things since then but those are stories for other days."
"Yes we can share some when I am getting your measurements for the dress." Valerie said wanting to know more but knowing that now wasn't the time. "Please, though, go on with the rest of your findings on the fairy type as I know that you and Ash played a significant role in it."
"We did and more than expected even if it was all by accident." Dawn said. "We told Professor Oak about the moment with Togekiss, and he instantly began investigating but wasn't sure what it meant. Neither were we until Ash fished out a Dratini in a lake between Vermilion and Saffron that was afraid of an Azumarill and its gang of Marills a few months later when we were spending the year in Kanto so that I could take part in the Contest Circuit and Ash could prepare to reenter the Indigo Conference."
"Given the Pokémon involved I take it you saw the immunity again." Valerie said. "This time with the Azumarill and Marills which are very different from a Togekiss."
"Yes they were able to withstand a dragon type attack from Dratini with no damage." Dawn said with a nod. "It was a surprise to say the least but Ash being Ash helped Dratini out and had it learn Thunderbolt to defend itself before it joined Ash after the incident was resolved and now it is a Dragonite. That was when we realized that there was much more going on that just my Togekiss and Professor Oak's research to find an answer kicked up a notch. It helped that his assistant Tracey has a Marill."
"That does help." Valerie said with a nod. "But the immunity is just the first stage and the most notable trait, it's not the only one you two realized, is it? The other factors would be needed to confirm that a new type had appeared."
"No, it's not." Dawn said shaking her head. "A few months later the next clear oddity happened during the HopHopHop Town Contest. Ash was in it as it had a double battle and he'd recently caught Dratini and a Gengar and wanted to practice with them. It was in the semifinals against a rookie coordinator that it happened, and that rookie was Emily."
"Oh, the charming, shy, girl with an affinity for fairy types that won the Laverre Contest." Valerie said and Dawn nodded at that. "She's certainly like me in that regard, I look forward to seeing her again when her boyfriend challenges me for his final badge."
"He's not her boyfriend." Dawn said.
"Really? They gave off a couple vibe." Valerie said surprised. "Well give it time."
"I am sure it will happen." Dawn said with a grin. "But back to the story, it was in that semifinal that the second oddity happened. Ash's Gengar showed that it knew Venoshock and used it on Emily's Granbull. It was clearly super effective and knocked out Granbull pretty much right away. That was the more obvious one as earlier Ash's Pikachu had used a steel type attack to down Sabrina's Mr. Mime in his full battle with her that was confusing but in the end it would help realize that steel also interacted with fairy types."
"Yes, none of that would have been the case before the sudden emergence." Valerie said. "Poison, at the time at least, was one of the weakest offensive types with only super effectiveness on grass type Pokémon and many grass types are crossed with poison so that negates its advantage. It certainly shouldn't take out a normal type that Granbull would be considered back then unless it was already near the end, but I doubt it given your description. As for the steel, well I can see that being confusing but harder to see due to Mr. Mime's psychic type, it would always be easier with the normal to fairy types than the ones that added it to their existing type."
"No, it shouldn't, and we reported it as well which was the next data point as now it went beyond just an odd immunity that was starting to emerge all over the place as by the time we reached Hoenn at least Kirlia was added to the list I believe." Dawn said. "And more I think."
"Sylveon, Spritzee, and Aromatisse had been observed by the time of the last Wallace Cup." Valerie said with a nod. "But I'll get into that with my own role in a moment. After the poison reveal, what was the next data point because you two had the most according to the paper?"
"We did but the next was one that we didn't realize for a while, not until my friend and rival Anabel pointed it out to me after I told her the story and that was after another data point was discovered." Dawn said. "That was because it wasn't a Pokémon that provided it but a move."
"Dazzling Gleam." Valerie said knowing the move well. "That was the first move to be reclassified from normal to fairy type according to Professor Oak and the only one confirmed at the time of the reveal though a day later Play Rough was reclassified as well if I recall."
"Yup and that was all because of two Pokémon that would soon be mine." Dawn said. "It occurred atop a hill on one of the islands that are off the coast of Kanto. Ash and I were on a cruise from Fuchsia City to Cinnabar Island at the time when it happened."
"That is a good cruise to enjoy." Valerie said. "I went on one myself while I was in Kanto to see more of the region."
"It was both fun and useful as it took us to two Contests I wanted to enter though I lost the second one and thus had to go for my 5th ribbon elsewhere." Dawn said. "But one of the stops on the cruise was this small island had one town, a port town in fact, and was believed to be haunted."
"Ah that does explain more." Valerie said. "If ghost types were involved then Dazzling Gleam working would be a surprise."
"Precisely though we didn't put two and two together at the time." Dawn said. "We were just checking the island out and it did indeed turn out to be haunted due to a desecrated Pokémon shrine that had led to the formation of a Spiritomb. Ash set it off, but I had to deal with Spiritomb as he was chasing after Pikachu at the time, but Piplup lost so I was about to use another Pokémon. That's when a Shuppet that I had met in Lavender Town and had followed me since then, including to Hoenn and back, showed up and saved me."
"By using Dazzling Glean which worked on Spiritomb." Valerie said as she got the whole picture. "Which unbeknownst to everyone was now super effective against a Spiritomb."
"Yup though I didn't realize that at the time it wasn't supposed to do so, I was too relieved to focus on that little detail." Dawn said. "I caught that Spiritomb, which you've now met, and a few moments later that Shuppet as well though he's now a Banette. That was when the theory of a new type emerged as the oddity was no longer confined to Pokémon, but it took something special to prove it, something only Ash had the Pokémon for even if he didn't realize that at the time."
"On that note, how on earth did Ash get a Porygon2?" Valerie asked. "That is a Pokémon I'd never even heard of before the paper."
"Gifted him by some insane scientist who once sent him into a computer world with that Porygon2 back as a Porygon during his first year as a trainer that we ran into after Ash's full battle with Erika in the Celadon Gym." Dawn said as if it was nothing. "You know, just a standard day for us it seemed though I did learn a story or two of Ash's I hadn't been told before that day."
"So just an average day then." Valerie said.
"Pretty much." Dawn said. "That's how Ash got his Porygon2, and it is thanks to Porygon2's unique move known as Conversion2 that the final piece of the puzzle fell into place and Professor Oak knew for certain that what had happened was the emergence of an 18th type out of nowhere."
"That's a move that allows Porygon2 to change types right?" Valerie asked as she tried to recall what had been written in the paper that confirmed the status of fairy types in the world. "It becomes a type resistant or immune to the last move used against it."
"Correct and Ash likes to use that move with his Porygon2." Dawn said. "And when the change happens Porygon2 changes color so we can tell what type it was, most of the time. The one time we couldn't was during a couple's tag battle challenge on Seafoam Island we were in when Porygon2 avoided a bug type attack and turned pale pink, a color we didn't associate with a type at the time and certainly none of the types known to be resistant to bug type attacks. We informed Professor Oak and that's what did it for him. With the help of Ash's Gabite he was able to trigger it again with a dragon type move which it shouldn't have done."
"No, it should be gray due to the only type resistant to dragon type attacks before the discovery of the fairy type was steel." Valerie said. "And no one can say that a steel type is pink other than Klefki which added a fairy type anyway."
"Correct and that was when Oak realized what he had discovered." Dawn said. "Thanks to Ash of course. All that was left was to prove it and after some convincing Porygon2 took a dragon type attack while pink and it confirmed that a new type had appeared. From there it was just a few more instances, mainly Emily's Granbull shrugging off a fighting type attack in the Grand Festival that year, that finalized how the type interacted. Thanks to other data it was deduced that fairy type attacks are strong against dragon, dark, and fighting types while weak against poison, steel and fire types and the fairy type itself is immune to dragon attacks, resistant to bug, dark and fighting and weak to steel and poison."
"All true." Valerie said with a nod. "And it was named fairy after Clefairy as that was the first type to exhibit the immunity when the records were looked at if I recall."
"Yeah the Professor has been vague on that." Dawn said. "And of course, the research continues as seen by the sudden confirmation of Dedenne adding the type that occurred recently and in which we again played a role as it was Ash's Sliggoo that provided the first dragon type attack on a Dedenne which belonged to Bonnie."
"It will continue until we can learn how it came into being." Valerie said. "And I for one am curious on that front as I really want to know how this type appeared."
"On that." Dawn said. "You said you had your own interactions with the type, what were they? I know that you were declared a specialist right away and the Laverre gym changed due to all your Pokémon either having gone from normal to fairy or added it but that's it."
"Well, Mawile took a bit longer, but she was confirmed as well a month or so later with mine providing the second example needed." Valerie said. "And as three of my Pokémon had it and I do two on two battles with two Pokémon that went from normal to fairy it made the most sense but there is more to it. You know how I said I can only talk to certain Pokémon."
"Yeah and you listed a few." Dawn said recalling the early part of their conversation. "All of which have added a fairy type or changed from normal to fairy."
"Correct and that is true fully, especially with how I can talk to Dedennes as I could communicate with Bonnie's and that was why I suggested she test it for a fairy type addition." Valerie said. "Because I can only talk with Pokémon that have the fairy type or can get one in an Eevee's case. Why that is the case I do not know but it shows that I have the affinity for the type and that there is something intrinsic to these Pokémon that they all added or changed to it. They have to have something to them that caused the change when it emerged, but I have no clue what it could be."
"It will likely help understand why only about 40 Pokémon or so added or turned to the type." Dawn said. "And your skills will be useful there. You must have noticed it when it happened though."
"I think I did." Valerie said thinking on it. "Though I can't pinpoint when it happened, all I know is that about 2 years ago now I woke up one day and suddenly felt complete in a way I'd never felt before. I really don't know how to explain it but despite everything in my life I always felt that there was one thing that was still missing but I didn't know what it was. That changed overnight and shortly afterwards I started to notice the change in my Pokémon. For me it was the resistance to fighting type attacks that I noticed most."
"That I can understand." Dawn said. "It's the only type that is super effective against normal types so it would make sense that people use it against you here thinking that you are a normal type gym."
"Well, I was a normal type gym for a good 18 months after the moment I felt complete." Valerie said. "So, it made sense, but I did report it, along with the dragon immunity when I noticed it in my Spritzee during a match against some Hoenn kid called Sawyer and his Bagon. After that Sycamore had me monitor it and it was confirmed with my Sylveon and Mr. Mime as well, that is actually where Oak learned of the latter that he would have passed onto Ash."
"Yeah Mimey is Ash's least used Pokémon but the only one that added a fairy type." Dawn said. "So, Ash planned all of that against that Hydreigon."
"I remember watching it as Sycamore had been tipped off to the potential reveal and told me to watch and await a potential monumental moment in the final quarterfinal matchup of the Indigo Conference." Valerie said. "Almost as soon as Ash's Mr. Mime appeared I got the info on the new type and the request to change the Laverre gym to a fairy type gym and asking if I wished to be recognized as the first ever fairy type specialist. I accepted at once, right as Ash was demonstrating the immunity in fact, and the rest is history. There is still so much to learn about this new type, but it's made me so happy to know about it hence why I was so enthusiastic when you and Ash arrived."
"Yeah Ash has gotten that a lot here, but you were the most enthusiastic." Dawn said.
"Well, my life changed the most because of it." Valerie said as she finished her tea and Dawn did the same having been steadily drinking it during their conversation. "And thank you Dawn for telling me this story."
"My pleasure." Dawn said with a smile.
"As thanks for all you've done for me without realizing, I do insist on making this dress for you and basing it off your Togekiss." Valerie said getting to her feet causing Dawn to follow her lead. "It is only fitting I do this."
"It is more than I deserve but I know that I can't stop you." Dawn said with a smile. "So, I will wear it with pride when I have the chance."
"Excellent then get Togekiss and Piplup and follow me." Valerie said as she headed deeper into this part of the gym. "I need your measurements and I need to fully study Togekiss to get this right, anything less would be an injustice to her."
Dawn just nodded at this and called her Pokémon to her before she followed Valerie to where the woman would measure her. It had been a good talk and she was glad she'd been able to tell the story to someone who would really appreciate it. Now it was time to get a Valerie original and Dawn wouldn't lie and say she wasn't excited.
Overall, it had been a good day off for Dawn and a need break before the next part of their trip. Hopefully the others had a good time as well as they continued their journey in Kalos.
I think I will leave this nice, long, supplement off here. Once again, as with characters like Lucy and Sabrina, I have taken a lot of liberties with Valerie and her backstory, hopefully it works. The Johto part is canon though, she is confirmed to be from Johto originally and her accent in the original Japanese is the same as the one characters from Johto have which adds to it though of course the dub doesn't show that. Also I wanted to show that because of Valerie's ability to talk to fairy types predating the emergence of the type that there was something intrinsic to those Pokémon that added or changed to fairy type but of course I still won't answer the origin question anytime soon As for the rest, well I always had a feeling that Valerie would want to hear the full story of how her type was discovered after it appeared and now she knows it and can repay Dawn for her role in it though it will be a while before we see that dress because I am cruel like that. Anyway, that is all I have for this Supplement, there is another supplement coming out tomorrow that is ready to go that is much shorter and follows what Ash does during the day off so stay tuned as that is coming very soon. As always please continue favorite and follow both me and this story to keep abreast with new releases and keep the reviews coming. Until next time.
