Chapter Eight- The Approaching Storm

Naruto sighed as he was in his office going through the paperwork. Paperwork in his mind was the bane of any professional's existence but it had to be done. As he was going through his paperwork, he wondered about Lena's invitation. In this new universe, he had been with very few women. It had been a long time since he had been with one. Something in her eyes and her sincerity made him want to save her.

He was always like this, trying to save people. Is this what he truly wanted? To find someone who could truly save him? After what happened in his past, he did wonder if there was someone out there who would never abandon him. Only time would be the true judge of that.

He was shaken out of his musings when he heard a knock on his door. He looked at the clock and realized his next appointment had started. He did not expect the person stepping into his office to be someone from his past; it was Donna Troy herself in the flesh.

"Hmm, you look really good for some who died a while ago."

Donna gave him such a beautiful smile that even Naruto himself was floored a little. "Well, in this world, who really stays dead?"

"Point taken. Now, how did you find me?"

Donna sighed. "You are not the master of mastery you make yourself out to be. You always had a way with words and you had great empathy for people. You were either going to be a diplomat or a therapist. It was not hard to narrow it down."

Naruto crossed his arms. "That's great and all. However, I know you are not here to make small talk. And I know you aren't here to rekindle old memories. So, what do you want?"

There was a solemn expression on her face, almost one of sadness as well. "Its been a long time, but I finally gathered the courage to do it. I want to pay my respects to him."

Naruto sighed. "Look Donna…"

"Naruto, I know what you are going to say. It took me time to realize that you weren't the only one who fucked up during that time. We all did. You were one of the few who disagreed with what was happening. And still you tried to take everything on yourself. I know you have been carrying this inside of you for some time. I think its time we let go of the past."

Naruto leaned back as he gave her a solemn expression. "It seems death taught you something special didn't it? I forgave myself for that time a while ago. I carry a different kind of pain. Okay, we both can pay our respects and move on from that day."

Naruto took off with Donna as he had no more clients to tend to for the day. The both of them used intense speed and managed to make their way to San Francisco and found Jericho Wilson's resting place as they both placed flowers there and stood there in silence, honoring a young man who only desired to be a hero and valued them all as his friends.

It felt like an eternity as they stood there and were lost in the memories of Jericho Wilson. He was a good man who lost his life in a pointless struggle. In the end, Jericho's death taught him a very important lesson. In Naruto's mind, revenge was nothing but a pointless endeavor that destroyed the individual that pursued it. He learned that lesson and so did Donna.

Naruto slowly walked away from Jericho's resting place, as he heard Donna's voice.

"Fishcake, why did you forgive me?"

Naruto sighed. "Donna, I used to be a mercenary. I used to obey orders without question. Here is something that you already used to know. We kill and then kill in revenge. And then the cycle continues and continues. We human beings are responsible for so much good and so much bad, but we don't think things out well when we are wronged.

"You wanted revenge on Slade Wilson because he killed Garth. He took away someone you valued and loved. I understand revenge and you were well within your rights to want it. Yet, you chose the wrong way to get it. You wanted to use that kid to get revenge on Slade and that was wrong. I forgave you Donna because you knew deep in your heart that you fucked up. You should let it go now. You can choose to live with the pain, or you can forgive yourself and move on. The choice is yours."

Donna smiled at him, as Naruto went to leave. "And what about us? Am I so horrible that you don't want to give us a second chance?"

Naruto smiled at her somberly. "You deserve the world, Donna Troy. Yet, I am not sure if I am that man who can give it to you. Besides, I am still hung up on someone. I still need answers before I can truly move on."

Donna was undeterred. "Hmph, I don't give up so easily, and not when it comes to things I want."

"Really? And how would you know that I still want you?"

"Older, smarter, and prettier; you know that."

Naruto muttered. "Great. Now I now what Sasuke-Teme felt like when it came to his fanclub."

"Well, if there's nothing else…"

"Jiraya would be very proud of you, and so would your family. They would be proud of the man you have become."

Naruto turned around as Donna disappeared. He smiled gently.

"Idiot."

Deep within the basement of the warehouse that Slade had commandeered, Slade was at work building his body for the inevitable confrontation he had been preparing for years. He was shirtless covered in scars as he continued to slam the large tractor tire with a sledgehammer, letting out his rage.

He released all his rage upon the weights as he flipped heavy tires, tossed around heavy weights, pushed heavy weighted sleds, and preformed pull-ups with heavy weight strapped around his waist. He used his rage and pain to power himself through this session as he roared like a lion.

In his rage and anger he thrashed and destroyed the room he was training on. With his bare hands, he tore through the walls, and bent the weights and plates in his hands, imagining himself crushing Naruto's head.

At last, when his rage was finally spent he sat down on the grimy floor and closed his eyes, taking a deep breath. He exhaled deeply and smiled. He was ready for war.

"I am coming for you now, brother. Your dead body will allow my son to move on to the afterlife."

Slade Wilson was not the only one who was training, preparing herself for the future. In one of the DEO's secret fortified bases, Kara had been training as well; using equipment and technology fortified and made specifically for her.

She was caught off guard by Bloodsport and he escaped from her. He would not get lucky a second time. The Goddess of Rage and Power had unleashed her heat vision and her vaunted, unexplored power as she made a mess of the DEO base. The entire base was damaged from head to toe as she tapped into her rage and vaporized a large part of it, as she went outside and once again littered the area with craters and turned large part of the area to glass.

Besides tapping into and exploring her abilities further, she took a greater interest in hand-to-hand combat. She trained with Alex using a Red Kryptonite Ring and learned she still had a long ways to go when it came to physical combat. She never wanted to fall into a situation where she could do nothing if she was devoid of her abilities. It had taken her a lot of time, but she eventually managed to hand her sister her ass.

Still, she could not help but wonder what would await her at the Waterfront. And, she wondered if she would meet that man again over there. What would she do when she met him again? Was she capable of moving on from the past? Was she so petty that she could move on so easily? She sat down amongst the fires she created and wondered what the future would hold for her now that she was being seriously honored for her part in saving the world from that war.

She had to wonder if she truly was meant to have it all.
