Republic City was the fruit of cooperation between the redeemer of the Fire Nation, Zuko and the last Airbender, the Avatar Aang.
A beacon of hope and dreams, of progress and achievement, a symbol to all that would see it, to mark the end of a seemingly endless war, and show the world how much better they were for choosing peace.
Naturally, this led to its founders and most important figures, Aang and Zuko, being horribly busy, just about every second of the day. To the point Katara hadn't seen her husband in weeks! WEEKS!
