30. The Nats out of the bag
Natasha drove her motorcycle all the way down to Wades apartment. With traffic it was a 45 minute drive. As she arrived a police vehicle was leaving. She could see Tony and Steve outside the building, Tony on his phone, and Steve listening in. She drove up next to them, then turned off her bike.
"That's great, so I can enter when ever I want?" Tony asked the person on the other side of the line, "24 hours notice. No, I think I'm good, thanks," he hung up quickly, "Hey Nat. May I ask what you're doing here?" He didn't seem too thrilled to see her.
"I'm going to help you look. You've been here before without any luck. Maybe I can change that,". Tony nodded, not smiling.
Something was off. Nat knew he was hiding something. Could it just be her imagination? Tony would come right out and say it to her face if he was pissed. He just seemed so cold to her. She shook her head. "He's just worried about Peter," she rationalized, "he's just... worried,".
"That would be helpful, thanks Natasha," Steve sighed in relief. They could really use all the help they could get.
"Great," Tony clapped his hands together, "I'll grab the keys from the former landlord, then we each pick a floor and start knocking on doors. If it's locked or they don't answer, just barge right in," he turned and started walking to the building. Steve and Natasha followed him. The older landlord was perfectly happy handing over the keys to his old building. He just got a bunch of money, who wouldn't be happy? Tony handed both Nat and Steve a skeleton key. A key that could open any door in the building.
"Alright boys, I'll take the second floor, Steve you take the first, and Tony you take the third," she commanded.
"Good call, Natasha," Steve nodded and proceeded to his floors. Tony followed Nat up to her floor. She waved him off as she walked up to the first door. Tony continued up the stairs to his assigned floor. After two minutes Natasha stopped in front of the twenty fourth door. She walked back to the stairs. She climbed down the stairs. She spotted Steve, knocking on the 3rd door. She climbed up the stairs to the third floor to see Tony, fidgeting with his key. Good.
She made her way back down to the second floor. She moved directly to the 26 door, the one she knew was Wades. She shoved the key into the lock, opening the door. She slid in shutting the door behind her. She slowly looked around.
"God, this place is so dirty," she spoke aloud, "I hope Tony kicks his dumb ass out,".
"Who out, Natasha?" Nat spun on her heel to see Steve and Tony standing in the doorway.
"Shit," she uttered. "I knew I should have waited,".
Steve gave her a disappointed sigh.
"We knew something was off when you defended him when he had that hickey," Tony smirked.
"We just didn't know why," Steve crossed his arms over his chest.
"We just had to wait for you to slip up. And lookie here," Tony stepped more into the apartment, "seems that you had a special interest in this room, and seem to know who lives in it,".
Natasha smiled, defeated. She folded her arms and shifted her weight to one side.
"And I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling kids," She covered her face with her hand, then ran it through her hair. "I'm losing my edge. I let you two dorks catch me," she spoke honestly.
"So why?" Steve looked at her sternly, "Why lie for Peter? Do you know what he's doing or where he is?". Nat nodded. Steve released his tense body. "Can you bring him back? Can you call him somehow?" Steve almost begged. The red head sighed.
"I already tried. He's... not willing to come back just yet," she answered.
"I don't care if he's not willing, he's coming back home now," Tony scoffed. She shook her head.
"I don't know where he is exactly or else I would have been on my way to get him already," she rolled her eyes.
"Call him," Tony stated. She sighed, pulling out her phone. She cringed and put the phone on speaker. The phone rang three times before someone answered.
"Y'ello Natty watty bo batty. How's my favorite super spy doing?"
"Wade, you're on speaker. Peters-"
"Oh, hey, let me put you on speaker too,"
"Wade-" she pinched the bridge of her nose in frustration.
"Okay you're on speaker with Wade and Peter!" Wade sung happily.
"Nat, are you still mad? Peter asked timidly.
"Peter-" she started off soft.
"If she's not mad, I am! Where the hell are you!" Tony blurted out.
"D-Dad?" Peter sounded shocked.
"Peter, It's me, please come home," Steves heart couldn't take it.
"Oh, it's your daddies," Wade backed off.
"Who is that, Peter? Where are you?" Tony grabbed the phone.
"Dad- Pops- I ah-" Peter hesitated, "I'm at my partners place doing homework," he lied.
"Oh really? Where is your partners place? Because I'm pretty sure I'm standing in it. Apartment #26 ring a bell?" Tony continued. The line went silent.
"Oh, don't go into my room, you wont like it" Wade warned. Steve stepped away and looked into the bedroom. He paused at the door, looking in.
"Peter!" he shouted and hurried back to the phone, "Why is there a wall of GUNS in this apartment?" Peter didn't answer.
"Wade is a mercenary," Nat answered for him.
"Nat!" Peter screamed.
"Peter you're with a mercenary? Peter! Where are you?" Steve became angry, "I'm coming to get you!"
"Petey, we need to start the mission," Wade tried (and failed) to whisper.
"Mission? Is- is this merc training you? Peter, you are coming home righ-"
"Why do you care if he's training me? You dropped me, why can't I train with him!" Peter yelled.
Steve was taken aback by his sons anger. But he shook it off quickly.
"Peter, tell us where you are now!" Steve shouted.
"No! Go to hell!" The phone clicked. He hung up.
