Amity Blight never thought she'd find herself in a dingy bar on the outskirts of town, but there she was. Boscha, one of the other new interns at the law office, sat across from her taking large sips from her fishbowl of alcohol. She had talked herself into accepting Boschas offer of a drink after work, attempting to liven up her non-existent social life. The constant drone of the bar, and the amateur musical entertainment being provided on a rickety wooden stage made her regret her attempt completely. Amity checked her watch, it was already 10 p.m. and she wanted to get an early start tomorrow.
" Uh… Boscha, I really need to get going now. Thanks for inviting me out. It was… fun?"
Boscha swung her head towards her, her eyes already quite glassy.
'Shit, how much alcohol did they put in that drink? ' she thought.
"No" Boscha slurred, reaching out and grabbing at the end of her sleeve. "The best part is about to start."
Amity looked towards the stage where a couple of roadies were moving the instruments out of the way. Gently she pried Boschas fingers off her, "I'd really like to stay but…"
"Good evening ladies and gentleman! As you know tonight is karaoke night, so step right up and take a turn to wow the crowd!"
Amity blanched as Boscha started to giggle and hoot with the rest of onlookers as the MC left the stage.
'Oh gods no' Amity thought 'there was no way in hell that she would be signing on that stage'
Panicked, she turned back to Boscha "I am not singing."
The other girl rolled her eyes. "I know that Blight. It's fun watching all the wanna be pop stars try though. Stay. You just might like it."
Amity scowled at the back of her co-worker's head, but she sat back down. If she needed to watch just one person embarrass themselves before she could leave, she could. She turned her attention towards the stage.
It took a few minutes, then a lanky woman in a worn green jacket and a red beanie ascended the stairs. She turned towards the audience and bowed with a flourish, a cocky grin adorning her face. Amity found herself smiling as she watched her. The woman's attitude was contagious. 'This might not be so bad', she thought.
The girl took the mike and the first few notes of the song she picked trickled through. Amity's brows scrunched together, it definitely wasn't a song she was familiar with. Then the girl started to sing. Her voice was raspy and low, she could hold a tune but was very much an amateur vocalist.
Boscha scoffed next to her, muttering something into her drink. Amity chose to ignore her. For some reason she was entranced by this stranger. The stranger in question added some very outdated dance moves to her performance and Amity hid a smile behind her folded hands. The song came to an end and with another bow Beanie left the stage. Amity's gaze followed her to the bar where she seemed to strike up a conversation with the bartender.
"Another glass of water doll?"
Startled Amity turned to the waitress standing next to their table gesturing to her now empty glass of water.
"Oh, uhm no thank you." She said, her eyes flickering back towards the bar. The waitress went to move on, "Wait!" Amity started, reaching after her. The waitress, Skara, the name tag read, turned back to her. She was so nervous all of a sudden.
"Thee uh girl, that was just on stage… does she come and sing often?"
Skaras eyes went to the bar with the girl in question, "You mean Luz right? Green jacket and red beanie?"
Amity nodded.
"She usually comes every Thursday as far as I know. Says Karaoke's her jam or something." Skara shrugged, not seeming to understand the other woman's fascination with it.
"Okay, thanks!"
Nodding, she walked off to another table. Amity turned back to her glass and caught Boscha staring at her, eyebrow raised.
"What?"
"Nothing, absolutely nothing." Boscha smirked "So, still feel like leaving Blight? Or maybe that performance got you in the mood for a bit more of an exciting night."
Her face burned. "I just liked her voice, Boscha."
"Hmmm, sure sure."
Sighing Amity stood and grabbed her bag. " I really am going to leave now. I'll see you at the office tomorrow."
Boscha raised her arm in a half hearted goodbye. As Amity made her way towards the exit she couldn't help but take one more glance towards the bar. Towards Luz, who was laughing at something. She just might have to make Thursdays her bar nights.
