Assignment #10

History of Magic - Historical Ministers of Magic

Task #4: Nobby Leach - Write about Abraxas Malfoy

Word Count: 1947

AU: Tom's character is way too AU and Abraxas Malfoy is my own creation so, yeah. Oh, and I think that I have jumbled up the dates…

Warning: Slight mentions of abuse (nothing graphic)

Abraxas Malfoy looked at the Sorting Ceremony dispassionately. He longed to be back in the Malfoy Manor with his parents and little sister and the house-elves excellent (not that he would tell them) mango juice. Just two years of this. He reminded himself.

Then, Dumbledore, Transfiguration Professor and a fool called out, "Riddle, Tom!"

For some unknowable reason, Abraxas felt oddly...pulled towards the first year. He wore second-hand clothes but his face was beautiful - like a fallen angel, for he didn't seem to have the purity of being an angel. It could also be because of the way he held himself - with confidence. He walked up to the Sorting Hat with more grace than some of Abraxas' pureblood yearmates.

And the power...Oh, Merlin, the power, the sheer magic was rolling off of him in waves. However, it seemed contained, as if it was controlled by Riddle. Impossible. His mind whispered. Not even he - and he was considered one of the most brilliant students of Hogwarts - could do that all the time. So, how was this fallen angel able to do something which should, by all means, be impossible?

Abraxas would watch this little enigma closely. After all, he had been bored.

Abraxas quickly realized that Tom Riddle was not one to be underestimated. In fact, if it wasn't for his surname, many would mistake him for a Pureblood. He had the looks, magic and political power in spades - even though he didn't know it yet. By all means, he should've felt threatened by the angel's - that's what he'd been calling Tom Riddle in his head since 'Tom' sounded too common and 'Riddle' sounded too muggle - very presence. He should've attacked him, made the hierarchy clear as to who was in lead in Slytherin. By all means, he should've completely and utterly crushed the angel. But he couldn't.

He felt a sort of protectiveness he only felt in his little sister, Carina. So, it was a bit unsettling to feel it for a boy he had just met and didn't even interact outside of classes. However, he carefully observed the fallen angel from the shadows - like a true Slytherin - and he knew that within a few years, Tom Riddle would be a very real threat.

So, Abraxas had ordered the Slytherin House not to attack the new 'Mudblood' of Slytherin and, majority of them had listened and did as asked (read: ordered). However, there were certain cretins who clearly didn't value their self-preservation for they had attacked the angel even after his most explicit instructions. It was a wonder to watch as his angel cut down two fifth years. Then, Abraxas shook out of his shock and ordered the Slytherins to stand down, which they did.

As they were going to the Hospital Wing - for no first year comes out of a fifth-year student ambush completely unscathed - his angel said, "Why did you help me?" in such a soft voice that Abraxas' heart felt like it was about to break. It was clear from the voice that no one had taken care of his angel before.

"Because of several reasons," was Abraxas' non-answer. He couldn't really say that he was protective of his little angel, now, could he?

His angel's eyes narrowed in suspicion and Abraxas was quick to add, "I am not going to do anything. Just, if you need me, then remember that if you want to say something - anything - my metaphorical door is always open."

"Is it necessary for the Prefect to say it?" his angel asked shrewdly. He would make a wonderful politician one day.

"No," Abraxas replied truthfully, "I am doing this because I want to."

Just like that, some of the wariness and coldness melted away from his eyes. "Thank you. You don't know how much this means to me," his angel muttered.

Abraxas felt happy and angry all at the same time. He had to find out where his angel was staying and who his parents were. His angel couldn't be a Mudblood.

"Madame Williamson? Could you help us? I'm afraid that Tom here has run into some trouble," Abraxas said, his voice perfectly modulated to show the right amount of concern for a fellow snake - not that he needed to fake it.

After that encounter, his angel always told him whenever he had a nightmare and spoke so disdainfully of muggles that Abraxas was almost amused. Almost. All hatred stemmed from a misbelief, or a fear. Abraxas knew that the Pureblood supremacists' hatred stemmed from misbelief but that couldn't be the case with Tom Riddle. A boy living with the muggles for eleven years. Fear.

He had to find out where his angel was staying, effective immediately. So, he did the first thing that came to mind - he used Legilimency on his angel. It was morally bad and whatever but it was the quickest and most efficient way of getting information. What he saw was good enough to make him go into a murderous frenzy - and that is saying a lot since Abraxas was usually very calm and composed.

Unfortunately, he didn't get any information about his angel's origins. Only learning that he was named 'Tom' after his father, 'Marvolo' after his mother's father, 'Riddle'. Marvolo was clearly a wizarding name - and a befitting name for his angel so he decided to call him that in his mind from then on - and Abraxas was sure that he had read it somewhere. Problem was, he didn't remember. So, since he didn't want his parents to find out, he did the research by himself. He found some astonishing news. Marvolo was the name of the previous Lord Gaunt and he was the father to two children - Morfin and Merope though the latter's proof of existence was rather minimal. Both Marvolo and Morfin had had encounters with the Wizarding Law which put them in Azkaban, wherein Morfin died. Marvolo died after he went back home from Azkaban by which Merope was reported to be missing.

Abraxas was certain that Merope Gaunt was Marvolo's - his Marvolo's - mother for they had the same vivid violet eyes, the only difference being that Merope's were dull while Marvolo's were full of alarming intensity. Besides, Salazar Slytherin himself had gifted violet eyes to his successors and everyone knew that Gaunts descended from the Slytherin line. Nobody in the magical world, except Marvolo, had violet eyes.

A few years after Merope was reported to be missing, a muggle man from an affluent family - Tom Riddle - had returned to the town of Little Hangleton, blabbering about witches, witchcraft and potions. Of course, many people thought him to be insane but, for Abraxas, it was rather easy to connect the dots.

Merope Gaunt and Tom Riddle were Marvolo's parents. He was a Halfblood but from the noble line of Slytherin itself, which was practically royalty after the Emrys and Le-fay lines. Abraxas checked that Marvolo's father and his family were still alive but had made no effort to re-connect with Marvolo.

By Christmas, Abraxas had the weirdest urge ever - to ask his parents to adopt Marvolo. But, seeing how any mention of returning back for the summer horrified Marvolo, he thought he could give it a try.

So, just before he went back for Christmas break - Marvolo had been most distraught, seeing as the little minx had begun seeing Abraxas as an older brother - he collected three drops of blood from Marvolo when he accidentally cut his finger on the edge of a book. The drops of blood would be used in an Inheritance potion which would solidify his claim of Marvolo being Merope and Tom Riddle's son.

When he proposed the idea, especially when he showed the Inheritance test results - which had come out as Abraxas had hoped - his parents relented a bit because, even if he is a Half-blood, he came from the mighty Slytherin Line which would be incredibly beneficial for the Malfoys in the political field. And, lest he forget Marvolo's prowess. His parents had been shocked beyond words as Abraxas showed them the memory of a muggle-raised boy winning a duel against five Pureblood fifth-year students.

However, they were still a bit wary and that was understandable - a person just doesn't adopt someone just like that. But then, Carina dropped a comment on how she would like another brother and that their mother's line - the Dawn line - is strictly patriarchal and since mother is the last of the family, the Lordship would go over to her son but Abraxas already had the Malfoy heirship and he wouldn't be able to take one without forgoing the other. So, ultimately, the Dawn line would die with their mother. However, that would not happen if they were to adopt Tom Riddle.

And this was all before he told them about the Orphanage.

Needless to say, his parents were enraged and shocked that a magical child would be raised by (if Marvolo's flinches when being touched were to be noted) abusive muggles. Just to make sure, they sent a note to Mrs. Cole - the matron of the Orphanage and were doubly shocked when she plainly stated that it would be better if Marvolo dropped dead.

So, they went to the Orphanage where Abraxas tried very hard not to kill Mrs. Cole and, with a couple of Compulsion charms and a great deal of gin, everything that the people in the Orphanage - including herself, the other kids and the other people in charge - did to Marvolo. After that meeting, the elder Malfoys were surprised that Marvolo was such a powerful wizard since he should've turned into an Obscurial with all the things he had suffered.

They managed to gain the adoption papers from Mrs. Cole before Abraxas went on a murderous frenzy. He completely destroyed the duelling room. No one was allowed to hurt his Marvolo. His little brother. His.

When he went back to Hogwarts, he pleaded with Headmaster Dippet and got him and Marvolo into an audience with his parents and little sister who explained everything to Marvolo. Marvolo was shocked that he came from such a noble line and that his father was alive but didn't do anything to even see him. He was also ashamed when he realized that they had learnt of his pre-Hogwarts years but then Carina said in a very matter-of-fact voice that she didn't think he was weak.

When asked if he would like to be adopted - magically, biologically, legally with the help of a potion - Marvolo instantly replied with a 'yes'. The ceremony took place in the Easter Holidays but Abraxas wasn't able to attend since his OWLs were just around the corner. Marvolo even changed his name.

Azrael Janus Malfoy-Slytherin.

Azrael, because the boy is practically soaked with Dark Magic and seemed right. Janus, because every Malfoy family member has a god/goddess or star name somewhere in their name. It also signified Marvolo - sorry, Azrael's - new beginning.

Azrael was smothered in love and adoration and was treated much like Abraxas and Carina. He was a magical prodigy - much like Abraxas, and later Carina. He grew up to become one of the most brilliant politicians ever and with the Slytherin and Dawn Houses, he practically became untouchable. Later, he also became the Minister of Magic.

Later, he went on to marry Sebastian - a politician much like Azrael whom he had met with during a French Treaty with England. They adopted two children, a boy and a girl - Hadar "Harry" Hyperion Malfoy-Slytherin-Bernard and Corona Thethys Malfoy-Slytherin-Bernard.

They died at the age of hundred-and-eleven, surrounded by their children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren.

He didn't become a Dark Lord. Thank the gods.

A/N- Hope you enjoyed this. Have a wonderful day/night.
